n behalf of the School’s Board of Trustees, thank you for supporting the mission of Pomfret School.

Your generosity is allowing us to invest in the future of Pomfret. Pomfret is charting an aggressive course to advance teaching and learning, expand access and affordability, and enhance our community. The business model at Pomfret relies on philanthropy, past and present, to fuel everything that happens here. The School’s operating budget relies on gifts to the Pomfret Fund, our unrestricted annual giving fund, for 12 percent of our funding, and the draw from our endowment provides 10 percent of the remaining dollars we need to supplement the tuition dollars from our students’ families.

Message from the Head of School Dear Members of the Pomfret School Community,

A

s we celebrate a record year for giving to the Pomfret Fund, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank our extended Pomfret family for your support, encouragement, and faith during a time of tremendous change and disruption.

As this report chronicles, you came together with Pomfret alumni, parents, and friends all over the world to directly support and celebrate our amazing community even in the midst of uncertainty and upheaval. You invested in the people, programs, and places that make Pomfret one of the best small independent schools in the nation. You made it possible for our students to ask questions, tell stories, solve problems, make art, conduct experiments, build connections, test limits, try new things, have fun, grow, and mature.

In the spring, your support allowed our students to thrive under even the most difficult circumstances. Your support enabled our faculty to be innovative, nimble, adaptive, and creative. Your support gave us the courage to live the words of our motto, Certa Viriliter — strive valiantly — as our community negotiated difficult challenges with all the wit, grace, and poise we could muster.

Message from Board Treasurer & CFO Dear Pomfret School Community, Despite the onset of the pandemic and the resulting uncertainty and move to distance learning, the operating results for the year ended June 30, 2020, were strong. The FY20 annual operating expenses totaled $20,760,233, and were funded 74 percent by net tuition, 12 percent by the Pomfret fund, 4 percent by other income and 10 percent via a draw from the endowment.

The School’s endowment ended the year at an all-time high of $55.4 million despite the challenging market environment. The annual investment return for the year ended June 30, 2020, was 6.5 percent, more than 4.2 percent ahead of Pomfret’s investment allocation policy index and beating the most commonly used benchmarks by a significant amount. The effective spending rate from the endowment to fund operations represented 3.8 percent of the average endowment value for the year. Given the volatility we have experienced, the Investment Committee has been intentionally positioning the portfolio with the goal of achieving returns in excess of spending to support the operating budget and inflation. One key component of accomplishing that goal is to capture more of the upside and less of the downside during the market’s ups and downs. We believe that by maintaining our consistent discipline and prudent oversight we will continue to properly steward the assets our generous donors have entrusted to us.

The Pomfret Fund achieved a new record of $2,556,454, contributing more than 12 percent of the School’s operating budget directly supporting our faculty and benefiting every student, every day.

The loyal support of our generous donors, paired with careful stewardship of the School’s resources, allowed Pomfret to keep our commitment to all faculty and staff and maintain our full program throughout the fiscal year despite the onset of the pandemic. At the same time, we were able to provide variable costs savings refunds of nearly $700,000 to our current families and were gratified when many refused the refund and contributed back to the School in the form of a donation.

The Pomfret School Board of Trustees is committed to providing the best student experience, and we are focused on being careful stewards of the school’s mission and assets. The generous financial contributions of alumni, parents, and friends are critical to the current and future success of Pomfret, and we thank you for your continued support.
