WE DARE TO KEEP ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS.
2
From a shared foundation year to collaborative specialisms, our inaugural graduates celebrated the strength of diversity and collaboration through their show theme, “Forged Apart, Coloured Together.” Design for Connected Futures, the vision for the 2027/28 intake, builds on this legacy. Through a four-year curriculum, students develop the skills to connect ideas, people, and systems across technology and humanity, research and practice, and local and global perspectives. We nurture creative and unconventional minds to address complex challenges and shape a better future in an increasingly interconnected world. If you are ready to shape meaningful connections and design the world ahead, join our BA (Hons) in Design for 2027/28. 3

Work-Integrated Education (WIE)
Work-Integrated Education (WIE) WIE provides students with work-based learning experiences in organisational settings relevant to their professional fields or aimed at developing essential transferable skills. All full-time undergraduate students at PolyU Design are required to complete two key components—Internship and Cooperative Project—to fulfil the WIE requirement, which is mandatory for graduation. Every summer, final-year students undertake a minimum of eight weeks of full-time internship training with leading local and international design firms, corporations, and nonprofit organisations across sectors such as creative industries, social services, interaction and UI/UX design, education, media and publishing, advertising, business services, and more. This experience prepares students for life beyond graduation and ensures a seamless transition into industry. Outbound Exchange
Outbound Exchange The global exchange programme is an opportunity for students to experience studying abroad, outside of their habitual cultural context. It aims to develop students’ understanding and good will while strengthening cultural ties. It usually takes place in the second or third year of the Bachelor’s programme for outbound Hong Kong students, to top design schools in countries like Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Singapore, South Korea, the UK, the US, the Netherlands and many more.
23
Integrated Designpreneurship (InD)
Integrated Designpreneurship (InD) The InD is a track of Capstone Projects for our final year students. It is aimed to enable undergraduate students to explore teamwork and cross-disciplinary integration, system thinking in design, articulations of ‘for-profit’ yet ‘for-benefit’, as well as entrepreneurship and start-up opportunity.

BA (Hons) Scheme in Design—4 Year Programme
The BA (Hons) Scheme in Design educates innovative forward-thinking designers who are able to give shape and invent desirable futures relevant to a rapidly changing society. The Scheme offers an extensive range of different Design Specialisms that cater for tomorrow’s designers. This Scheme-based admission serves as an undeclared track. Students who enroll in the Scheme will first follow a common curriculum in Year 1 which offers them a year to identify their area(s) of interest and career aspirations, facilitating their Major programme selection in Year 2. Students are subject to further assessment criteria, i.e. students’ own choice, students’ portfolio evaluation, interview performance, GPA and individual subject results in selection of awards at the end of their Year 1 study.
33
BA (Hons) Scheme in Design—4 Year Programme
Foundation, Clusters, Specialisms & the Curriculum The BA (Hons) Scheme in Design is a 4-year full-time study honorary degree. All students complete a common Design Foundation in Year 1, followed by a Design Cluster in Year 2, before focusing on their chosen Design Specialism in Year 3 and 4. Each specialism has a dedicated study pathway with some common subjects. Year 1 Design Foundation: Common Basics The focus of Year 1 is to provide a broad-based foundation in common design skills, knowledge, and integration to enable students to become creative thinkers. Year 2 Design Cluster: Interdisciplinary Collaborations Year 2 students select one of the five Design Clusters: Communication Design, Environment Design, Immersive Media and Game Design, Product Experience Design, and Service Design. The five clusters provide a broad base of discipline-oriented study in preparation for specialisation in Years 3 and 4. Year 3 Design Specialism: Discipline Exploration Year 3 marks the beginning of discipline-specific studies for students enrolled in one of the eight Design Specialisms: Advertising Design, Environmental Design, Information Design, Interaction Design, Interior Design, Product Design, Service Design, and Social Design. Through dedicated study pathways and specialised subjects, students develop in-depth knowledge and skills within their chosen area of design. Students in the Immersive Media and Game Design Specialism begin their discipline-specific studies earlier, from Year 2, allowing them to engage with their field of study at an earlier stage of the programme. Year 4 Design Specialism: Integrative Design The Year-4 programme develops students’ critical and professional abilities in design. Students learn to tackle complex design issues through external client-focused and interdisciplinary studio projects. Students graduate from the Scheme in one of the nine Design Specialisms.

BA (Hons) in Design—Senior Year Programmes
Our Senior Year Programmes are designed for those who would like to prepare themselves for promising careers in specific design disciplines through studies at an undergraduate level. Normal duration of the full-time programmes is two years. Applicants must choose a specific programme when submitting their application. The Senior Year curriculum is available in our Bachelor's degree programmes in Advertising Design, Environmental Design, Information Design, Interaction Design, Interior Design, Media Design, Product Design, Service Design, and Social Design. It offers students a design education that is attuned to social trends and is sensitive to change. The School encourages its students to think critically, learn independently and in teams, experiment with dynamic, multi-layered design processes so as to weave culture and industry strands into appropriate social narratives. Core subjects of the issue-based design studio address contemporary aspects of human existence and the ambition to project desirable futures. Mindful of the cultural implications of technology, projects are developed with the user at its centre, and a critical appreciation of social trends, reflecting a humanistic teaching and learning mode running across the scheme’s design disciplines.
39
DESIGN SPECIALISMS
