A Note from the Performing Arts Department The night is darkening round me, The wild winds coldly blow; But a tyrant spell has bound me And I cannot, cannot go. The giant trees are bending Their bare boughs weighed with snow. And the storm is fast descending, And yet I cannot go. Clouds beyond clouds above me, Wastes beyond wastes below; But nothing drear can move me; I will not, cannot go. The poem above, “Spellbound” by Emily Brontë, is a favorite of mine. Each time I read it, I am transported back to childhood and the wonder of a snowstorm. The excitement and awe of watching beautiful showers of unique flakes fall while snuggling into a cozy blanket by my parents’ woodstove, knowing the roads are untravelable for some time and the air is quiet, still brings me peace. Similarly, every year when we arrive in December and everyone is feeling the need for break, it’s the Winter Concert that brings me the feeling of peace. Watching the nervous energy, seeing how the students always shine, and being a part of the celebration of their continued work is a winter tradition I am grateful to have. And without it, “I will not, cannot go” into break. Welcome to this joyous evening. Please enjoy; I hope the concert adds to the warmth of your holiday celebrations.
