THE FUTURE After a challenging two-year period, during which time our priority at the Four Seasons was to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our guests, our staff, and our families, I am pleased to say that we are now looking towards 2022 with great optimism. It is my firm belief that there are no frontiers when it comes to providing exceptional hospitality, and my aim has always been to challenge the status quo by offering our guests the very best in service, design, and culinary experiences. Throughout our 28-year history, the Four Seasons policy of continuous innovation has been a big part of our success. Following last year’s round of renovations, which included the completion and operation of M Fusion restaurant and the reconstruction of the new Terrace Bar CHRISTOS MOUSKIS Executive Chairman

and hotel lobby, we have begun planning the next phase of our innovation programme. The Four Seasons is set to unveil a brand new guest room prototype that will pave the way for the development of our hotel’s incomparable accommodation options. A selection of

During what was considered one of the most challenging years in the industry, the Four Seasons once again proved its unfaltering commitment to guests: adding two new awards to its ever-growing collection of accolades for excellence. The first came from the world’s leading travel site, TripAdvisor, which singled out the Four Seasons in its newest category – and highest honour – of the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, ‘Best of the Best’. This category distinguishes the world’s very best hotels, based on reviews and ratings from travellers across the globe. This year, the Four Seasons was recognised among the top 1% of hotels in the world, and the 21st Best Luxury Hotel in Europe, following its previous ranking of 25th in Europe in 2019. The hotel also earned yet another British Airways Holidays ‘Customer Excellence Award’ for 2020, maintaining its position as a top-rated hotel for the fifth consecutive year. Based on unbiased guest reviews, this accolade acknowledges superior services, facilities, and customer experiences offered by hotels around the world. The Four Seasons received an overall score of 9.7/10, and has been cited by British Airways customers as offering a consistently superior experience for the last five years. At a time when Health and Safety protocols are increasingly becoming a top priority for hotels across the globe, the Four Seasons has reiterated its commitment by developing new, innovative methods of implementing good health practices. Amongst these is ‘Inspector App’, a pioneering application developed by Human Resources Executive Kyriacos Kyriacou, which acts as a monitoring system for all Health and Safety-related procedures, from Risk Assessment to Internal Inspections. The hotel’s efforts were recognised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security as part of the island’s Health and Safety Week, and the Four Seasons was granted the first Pancyprian Award for ‘Examples of Good Health and Safety Practices’ for 2021.

FINE WINING-AND-DINING The exclusive ‘Wine & More Privilege Club’ (WMPC) held its most recent event at its official home in Limassol: the Four Seasons Hotel. Founded in 2019 by Christophe Chaillou, the wine advisor for local wine boutique French Depot, the Wine & More Privilege Club brings together entrepreneurs, business leaders, politicians and professionals for monthly meetings during which members engage in lively debates on subjects related to the world of gastronomy, politics, entertainment, and sports. Meetings are then followed by a dinner of gourmet dishes paired with world-class local and international wines. The elegant soir�e held in October was entitled an ‘Oeno-gastronomic journey in the South of Italy.’ Four Seasons Executive Chef Panicos Hadjitofis and his team designed the event’s seven-course menu, which included a lobster and seafood fregola, lamb shoulder confit and lamb fritter with eggplant caviar, a cheese selection, and a vanilla Chantilly, almond biscuit and Sicilian pistachio gelato. Each course was accompanied by one of eight different fine wines from the South of Italy, including two ap�ritifs and a dessert wine.

Nature’s Inspirations

AN INSPIRATION TO ALL MARY MOUSKAS’ first public exhibition took place at the Four Seasons in late October. She is seen here with her husband George (right) and

The Four Seasons is proud to have hosted local artist Mary Mouskas for her first ever public exhibition: ‘Nature’s Inspirations’. An inspiration to all, Mary – who has suffered with Parkinson’s for 15 years – credits art as her greatest medicine: a therapy, she suggests, which allows a calm escape from the daily trials and tribulations of living with a degenerative neurological disorder. Though she often donates her creations to friends and family, Mary chose to display her most recent paintings at the Four Seasons, with the entire proceeds from the exhibition divided equally between two charities: The Cyprus Parkinson’s Disease Association, and ‘Funding the Cure’ for Parkinson’s UK. The exhibition, inspired by the beauty and richness of nature in Cyprus and beyond, was held on October 29th and 30th, with an official opening by the First Lady Mrs Andri Anastasiades. “Art is my escapism, my therapy, and my greatest pleasure,” says Mary, who was thrilled that the hotel purchased two of her most vibrant works - now on display in the Colors Café!

PORSCHE SUPERCHARGERS

Luxury car brand Porsche has embarked on a journey towards electric mobility and a more sustainable future. In addition to its range of hybrid models and its first purely electric sports car, the Porsche Taycan, the brand is creating a global network of elite partners who provide charging stations for plug-in electric and hybrid Porsche cars at exclusive destinations, such as hotels, restaurants, golf clubs and marinas. A.I. Motokinisi, official importers and distributors of Porsche in Cyprus, have begun implementing this green initiative across the island, and the Four Seasons is proud to be the first ‘Porsche Destination Charging’ spot in Limassol. This global electrification initiative brand aims to offer a total of 25 electric chargers across the island, with the first five installed within the hotel premises as part of Porsche’s network of premium destinations. PROFESSIONAL, PRODUCTIVE and taking great pleasure in their work, the Four Seasons team has risen above the challenges of the last year to merit a ‘Great Place to Work’ accolade

The Four Seasons Hotel takes great pride in cultivating a supportive and nurturing workplace environment. As early as 2008, when the hotel was first accredited by ‘Investors in People’, an organisation that is considered the global benchmark in people management, the Four Seasons was consistently collecting commendations for being an excellent place to work. This year, the Four Seasons became the first hotel in Cyprus to be certified by ‘Great Place to Work’ – the global authority on workplace culture, employee experiences, and leadership behaviours. This prestigious award is based entirely on the feedback of staff members, who complete a survey on their workplace experiences. The Great Place to Work certification is particularly noteworthy this year, explains Human Resources and Quality Director, Andreas Loizou. “This was an exceptionally difficult year for our industry, and many companies preferred to forgo the Great Place to Work surveys,” Andreas explains. “The effects of the pandemic and constant closures had impacted all of us, and everyone was tired. Nevertheless, we did our best to keep morale high, and this shone through in the feedback from our team members, and granted us our Great Place to Work certification. The honour is a testament to our efforts to prioritise the health and safety of our team and guests, and establish practices that create great experiences. We are a great place to work, no matter the circumstances.” To receive such a commendation in these challenging times is certainly an achievement worth celebrating, as Four Seasons Executive Director, Nick Aristou can attest. “We are very pleased to be the first hotel in Cyprus to achieve accreditation from Great Place to Work – especially whilst in the grip of the worst pandemic to hit humanity in a hundred years! We are grateful to our staff who never lost faith in us despite the difficulties we all faced. We kept our focus, and managed to stay positive and productive despite the many challenges.” Maintaining a strong company culture is a priority for the Four Seasons, and this is achieved by continuously listening to and acting on input from team members. Employees are encouraged to give direct feedback, which is then evaluated, and changes are made accordingly. “It’s very important to us to hear from our employees,” explains Andreas. “This is how we can gauge our strengths and discover areas in which we can further improve.”

CHAMPIONS THE FOUR SEASON’S TEAM swept the board, with 18 medals at the Gastronomia HoReCa, and a ‘Chef of the Year’ award for Christos Christakis.

CHEF OF THE YEAR

The Four Seasons culinary team set a new standard of gastronomic excellence with a total of 18 awards at Gastronomia HoReCa. The largest exhibition in Cyprus for the hotel, tourism, and hospitality sector took place in 2021 from the 4th to the 7th November. The highlight of the event was the Cyprus Chefs Association culinary competition: an opportunity for the island’s very best chefs to demonstrate their skill and mastery through a series of competitions, and a category in which the Four Seasons chefs took no fewer than 12 gold and 6 silver medals! The highest accolade, Chef of the Year, was awarded to the Four Seasons’ Christos Christakis, and the Pastry Chef of the Year award went to Constantinos Chrysostomou. The hotel also participated in the Grand Prix in which a team prepares and serves a four-course menu to the judges in 90 minutes. Chefs Antonis Avouris, Giankos Ioannou, Andreas Elia, and Marios Karagiorgis together with server Maria Gkantaidou topped the ranks for best service. In the Euroskills Young Chefs Competition, the highest honours went to the Four Seasons’ Konstantina Papaioannou. Andreas Melanarkitis and Marios Karagiorgis received gold in the Desserts Plated category, and Nikolas Theofanou and Andreas Loizou brought home the silver. Alexandros Christoforou and Elena Lazarou were awarded silver for their Plated Appetisers and Pork Main. William Deguara and Solene D’Heilly were first in the Restaurant Appetiser category, while Spyros Neokleous and Martin Cicmatic received silver awards. A huge congratulations to all of the hotel’s culinary ambassadors!

With just six years’ experience at the Four Seasons, Christos Christakis has fulfilled a career milestone at the age of 30 with his award for Chef of the Year. Over the course of three gruelling hours,

Christos performed a live cooking demonstration that included the preparation, cooking, and presentation of his menu. A total of 18 plates were created under the close observation of renowned judges from the World Association of Chef Societies. The well-earned triumph was the result of months of preparation at the hotel, including three

time trials under the guidance and support of the Four Seasons team. While judges carefully examined the contestant’s hygiene standards, cooking process, and innovation, Christos suggests that it was his organised and methodical approach that secured the win. Christos has previously participated in competitions in Korea, Luxembourg, Germany and Greece as a member of the Junior National Team, and in 2016 as part of a group entry in HoReCa’s Grand Prix, but this is his first victory in his own right.

The 2021 Chocolate Week shone the spotlight on the most well-loved desserts in chocolate history. From the 12th to the 21st November, Colors Café transported visitors through a sweet retrospective as Demetris Hadjiyiannis and his team gave age-old classics a unique Four Seasons twist. Black Forest, Sachertorte and Red Velvet were among the delectable desserts included in what was a particularly impressive event. The Swiss roll, a popular childhood favourite, was transformed into a bubble-gum pink delight thanks to a the addition of a distinctive ruby chocolate sponge and forest fruit cream, while the Azelia – the hotel’s interpretation of the chocolate éclair – boasted a unique caramel cream and hazelnut praline filling. Such timeless treasures featured alongside the Four Seasons’ wellknown chocolate desserts; palate pleasers all. The Guanaja, the Jivara, and the Tart Brazil were among these hotel classics, served in glass verrines to highlight the textures and colours of each composition. The limited edition pralines – featuring luscious herbal tea infusions – also numbered amongst the delicacies: French rose, Sicilian orange, violet, and spicy cinnamon imparting luscious flavour in every bite. The talented pastry team demonstrated their impressive skills at the live dessert station, where chefs whipped up customised chocolate tablets for a captivated audience. With five types of chocolate to choose from, and additional caramelised nuts, meringue and waffles, the cocoa canvases were deemed a resounding success: another triumph of chocolate glory at the Colors Café!

Always on the hunt for the perfect new product line, the Four Seasons Spa recently elevated its offerings with a collection of bespoke products and signature resultorientated treatments from renowned French skincare company Anne Semonin. Exclusive in Cyprus to the Four Seasons Hotel, the line is celebrated for its innovative approach: its products designed with active ingredients in biotechnical blends to deliver results from the very first use. While the line is described as “very chic, high-end Parisienne in look and feel,” the real highlight is the products’ incredible effect, says Four Seasons Spa Manager, Anna Donovan. Not only do these products deliver real benefits, they also treat multiple skin conditions and can be

intelligently customised to meet each individual’s specific needs or desired results. “It’s all about mixology with Anne Semonin,” says Anna. “You can really customise the treatments by blending products together.”

Four years down the line, and I have a unique understanding of how the business needs to develop in the long term.” As the face of the coming generation, George has built on his father Christos’ experience, drive, and determination whilst introducing fresh, new approaches to today’s realities. “Each leader in the family is an independent entity with their own mind-set,” he acknowledges. “But it is our shared culture of respect that unites us. My father’s esteem for every single member of staff is a life lesson in terms of creating

LEADING THE TEAM With 23 years of Front Office experience under his belt, Andreas Alkiviades was the driving force behind the creation of the Guest Relations Team. “When I was at the Front Desk,” he explains, “I was always greeting and chatting with guests. I loved it, and they loved me!” With his jovial demeanour, it’s not hard to see why guests would immediately warm to Andreas, and the newly-created position of Guest Relations Manager – which soon saw the team expand to two, and then three dedicated members – was a natural fit. A genuine people person, Andreas is fiercely dedicated to ensuring that every guest enjoys the best time possible, and will go above and beyond to find solutions to any issue. In return, he has received numerous awards for his service, including the prestigious ‘Award for Excellence’ at the Cypria Hospitality Awards, which recognises and commends hospitality professionals whose admirable actions go beyond the call of duty.

Integral to the smooth running of the hotel, the Guest Relations Team goes the extra mile to offer the personalised touches that guests appreciate, and which set the Four Seasons apart. “At the Four Seasons, every team member manages ‘guest relations’ to varying capacities,” explains Executive Director Nick Aristou. “But as our international clientele grew, we realised we would further benefit from a dedicated team who would always be on the scene, looking after our guests and, most importantly, speaking their language.” Crucial to ensuring the seamless operation of the hotel, the Guest Relations Team provide the tailored touch so appreciated by guests, and which sets the Four Seasons apart. “We take the time to study our guests, and get to know them,” Nick explains. “This makes them feel valued, and at the same time, helps us to serve them better. We are the first hotel to deliver experiences such as complimentary hosted excursions, and we are constantly on the lookout for new ways to enhance our guest experience offerings.”

His boundless energy and willingness to go all out is particularly apparent in the complimentary excursions he organises to nearby villages for small groups of guests. “This is not your average tour,” Andreas reveals. “It’s more like a group of friends going out and having a good time, all whilst learning a little bit about the history of our island. We offer a true local experience for all ages and all nationalities, and many of our guests return and repeatedly ask for these excursions. “I might not be as multilingual as Lana and Evelyn, but the language of friendship is universal!” laughs Andreas. And indeed, the guest relationships he has cultivated over the years number amongst his most cherished friendships.

Cypriot-Lebanese native Evelyn Ibrahim is the newest member of Guest Relations, and her multilingual abilities ensure she is a valuable asset to both team and hotel. Fluent in five languages – Russian, English, Greek, French and Arabic – her linguistic proficiency, combined with her vivacious personality, instantly endear her to guests. “It’s important to be able to speak to a guest in their language; you build a rapport that immediately makes them feel comfortable and encourages open communication,” Evelyn acknowledges. “This helps us foster stronger connections and gain greater insights so that we can offer guests everything they wish for.” Evelyn fully embraces the concept of going the extra mile to ensure guests feel comfortable, and always goes home at the end of the day with a smile. “Knowing that I connected with people and made a positive difference to their stay is all the reward I need.” As for the trick to ensuring guest satisfaction, Evelyn explains there is no one single recipe. “Every guest is unique, and we treat them as such. We get to know their habits, their likes and their dislikes, and they appreciate that we take the time to do this.”

There is no such thing as a typical day for Evelyn and her colleagues. “From the moment we set foot in the hotel, we are on the go. We greet guests, we ask them about their plans and respond to any requests they may have. Then, throughout their stay, we touch base with them, whether it’s sitting down for a coffee or making sure their favourite table is reserved in our restaurants. We are, in fact, everywhere!” she smiles. And it’s a policy that certainly reaps rewards: the Four Seasons enjoys the remarkable rate of more than 55 per cent repeat guests!

SERVICE WITH A SMILE Lana Perikleous has been in Cyprus for 15 years and is practically a native. Her polished demeanour and desire to be helpful – not to mention her fluency in Greek, English, Russian and German – made her the perfect candidate to join Guest Relations from the outset. As Guest Relations Officer, Lana’s goal is not just to meet guests’ expectations, but surpass them. “We always make a note to recall specific details about our guests, such as their favourite dessert, and generally try to anticipate their needs before they ask,” she explains. “Even something as simple as remembering how much they loved ‘galatoboureko’ on their last visit, and having it ready for them when they return, can go a long way.” For Lana, no request is ever too big or too small, and this can-do attitude has made her a dependable asset on which visitors rely: “Guests will come to us with suggestions, and they feel comfortable doing so because they trust us.” More importantly, everything Lana does is done with a smile. “When you radiate good energy, you make people feel comfortable and at ease, and that is ultimately our goal. It is a joy to see the return of familiar faces, and we make sure their arrival feels like a homecoming.” Home is, after all, about being truly cherished. And that’s a feeling the Four Seasons Guest Relations team has truly perfected.

Scarlet Fever Vivaldi’s selection of game demands wines with depth in both body and aftertaste, and Cypriot reds do not disappoint in this respect. The native varieties cultivated at Vouni Panayia demonstrate the mastery at work in the highaltitude vineyards of the Paphos forests. Their small lot fermentations across 25 hectares benefit from the relatively cooler and wetter climate of the western part of Cyprus. The secret to their successful bouquet of flavours is that the vines are planted on their original roots dating back to the 18th century. The result is an impressive expanse of Cyprus reds, specifically Maratheftiko, Yiannoudi and Mavro. ‘O Perivolaris’ of 2019 is the winery’s exclusive interpretation of the Mavro grape, the native dark-skinned crop of Cyprus. Its high tannin content means that Mavro is easily absorbed by fatty dishes of duck, rib-eye, and other succulent meats.

FORAGE AND FEAST This succulent pan-seared duck delights the tastebuds as it rests on a riverbed of flavours with its hazelnut crust and the parsnip gnocchi and purée. Vouni Panayia’s Perivolaris perfectly balances the gamey taste of the dish with its intense aromatic qualities.

Terrain Supreme Among the foothills of the Troodos mountains are vines dedicated to the world’s most famous white grape. Kyperounda is one such winery that offers a rather beautiful expression of the Chardonnay variety. There is a reason for its longevity on the wine scene – relatively dry, medium-bodied, emanating fresh, crisp notes and flavours that shift dramatically during the aging process. This French classic is heavily influenced by the climate and terroir in which it is grown; the geological make-up of Cyprus offering a unique set of favourable conditions. The lower water content of the island’s clay soils allows good quality grapes that provide the richness and consistency commonly associated with the world’s best Chardonnays. Fermented and matured in oak barrels, the Kyperounda Alimos rendition of 2011 is a beautiful example of cellar evolution, and it marries beautifully with herb-infused seafood.

‘Microvinification’ is the term coined for the labours of love created by boutique wineries. These are small scale viticulture projects in which producers nurture experimental batches of wine in a series of meticulous trials, commonly working with ancestral varieties in an attempt to discover and explore the signature qualities of otherwise forgotten fruit. The smaller the harvest, the easier it is for the sample to oxidise and fail, and this challenge lends greater value to these exclusive, valuable labels. Vouni Panayi is one such winery that demonstrates passion, respect and dedication to their single vineyards through their microvinification series. Their exclusive Xyrika 2018 label is the story of the Kyriakides family, and their quest to master the indigenous Xynisteri grape from generation to generation; the Cypriot word ‘Xyrika’ referring to grapes cultivated more organically without the support of irrigation methods. The result is around 600 bottles of zesty freshness and delicacy that effortlessly elevate vegetarian and fish recipes.


Liquid Gold Morokanella is a relatively unexplored Cypriot variety that has recently acquired a rightful prominence on local and international wine lists. It’s difficult to define its composition in simple terms – perfumed but discrete, zesty and yet packed with herbal elements. In comparison to the more established Xynisteri variety, Morokanella successfully balances citrus notes with a fruity aroma to create a smooth and controlled finish. Accents of lemon and lime create a bold acidic punch and, together with the mineral backbone and the green fruit bouquet, there is a delightful all-round complexity. This richness of taste offers the right weight and length in flavour to compliment Vivaldi’s introductory plates, which include seafood, white-sauce pastas, and lighter salads. The wine list introduces Ktima Gerolemo’s reputable 2020 take on this multi-faceted wine variety.

Famed for its crystal waters and golden sands, Cyprus surprises many with its rich ecosystems on land and in water. These abundant habitats attract a wealth of wildlife, including more than 400 endemic, rare and migratory birds on whose route the isle lies – making the nation a dream destination for bird and nature lovers alike. Home to more endemic species and subspecies of birds than any other European country, Cyprus has been identified by BirdLife International as one of the continent’s unique Endemic Bird Areas. And such is the unique beauty of these feathered wonders, that no trip to the island is complete without a captivating ornithological excursion.

WATCHING AND WAITING

Drive less than half an hour from Limassol and you discover the Akrotiri marsh, located on the peninsula of the same name. Largely dry, and blazing with heat of summer, the area begins buzzing with wildlife at the end of August and – by autumn – is fully transformed into a natural paradise…

Of the 400 migratory bird species that visit Cyprus, 370 stop over on this very peninsula. So for avid bird-lovers, enthusiastic twitchers, and admirers of all things nature, a visit to the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre is a must. From its panoramic perspective overlooking the marsh, visitors can witness large numbers of several types of species. It’s the raptors that often draw the most attention. “I sit in our observation post and count them,” enthuses Varnavas Michael, the Centre’s Conservation Warden. “Last year, we counted 1000 buzzards in one day; all en route from Armenia and Kazakhstan.” Visitors can emulate Varnavas’ fascination and practise birdwatching themselves from the observation kiosk. Using the Centre’s powerful telescopes and binoculars, more than one guest has been known to spot a rare bird, or even the occasional new species amongst the migratory birds! “The White-eyed Gull and Grey Hypocolius are examples of firsts for Cyprus in recent years,” says Director of BirdLife Cyprus, Martin Hellicar. “And so too is the Black Flamingo – the only one of its kind ever spotted, as far as we know!” Amongst the more common sightings are the island’s endemic birds: the chatty Cyprus Warbler, which can be found all year round in scrub and forest areas; the Cyprus Wheatear, a migratory species that spends the winter in Africa but breeds only in Cyprus; and the Cyprus Scops Owl, a minute local with a highly individual two-note call. With so much distinctive fauna to be found, birdwatching in Cyprus makes for a fascinating pastime. In fact, you could spend anywhere from a few hours to several days exploring the unique habitats of the Akrotiri peninsula: the wetlands of Ladies Mile, the Akrotiri salt lake and marshes, and the Kensington Cliffs at Zapalo Bay,

Venture a little further and vary the season, and there’s even more to be discovered… In early summer, the Troodos mountains brim with unusual birds and, while birdwatching groups from the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia and the UK are the norm, anyone possessed of a pair of binoculars and a little persistence will reap rewards.

“Nature is very dynamic,” Martin suggests. “There are actually more wetlands and dams now in Cyprus than at any point in the past, and all attract different species. The Cattle Egret, a small white heron, was once extremely rare in Cyprus. Now, we’re seeing hundreds!” The reason for this increased local diversity is twofold. Firstly, location: Cyprus is a major staging post in both spring and autumn for birds journeying between Africa, Europe, and Eurasia. Secondly, food and nesting: while a few species stop for just an hour or two, others spend the entire winter on the island. “On the Akrotiri peninsula there are more than 20 different habitats,” Varnavas explains. The wetlands, many of which are protected under the Ramsar Convention, are rich feeding spots; the salt lakes are full of shrimp, a favourite with the hot pink flamingos; and the marshy fields offer up insects, lizards, and snakes to birds of prey, and butterflies, caterpillars, oranges and grapes for other birds. With 63 areas in Cyprus included in the Natura 2000 network of valuable habitats, several organisations focus on preservation. BirdLife frequently arranges educational ornithological events, while Akrotiri’s Environmental Centre houses a series of informative dioramas illustrating the importance of protecting birds and their habitats. Even the Ministry of Education highlights the Centre’s importance: those from nursery age to high school attend the Centre twice a year and, in 2020, 8000 students enjoyed a visit! Most of the time, however, the Centre is quiet and peaceful. Well worth a visit, it’s a joyous natural retreat that – like Cyprus itself – offers visitors a unique perspective on our feathered friends.

Other feathered migrants are more fleeting, but still worth the time. “The first bird species to pass by the peninsula is the Demoiselle Crane,” Varnavas explains. “They’re large birds that come from Ukraine and rest in Akrotiri for only a few hours before continuing their long journey to Africa.” But the Demoiselle is merely the herald of the coming crowds. As part of Cyprus’ ‘Important Bird Area’, which includes the Akrotiri peninsula, nearby marsh, and the Episkopi Cliffs, the area is a crucial congregation site for birds of all species. The Red-footed Falcon, Little Egret, Glossy Ibis, Crane, and Collared Practincole all pass through the region, while the Ferruginous Duck, SpurWinged Lapwing, Black-Winged Stilt all breed within the confines of the wetlands. In total, this area hosts 27 natural habitats: meaning that even the most jaded of visitors will find new and captivating sights to discover. And of these habitats, 22 are terrestrial and five marine; a staggering diversity that is the key to the plethora of wonderful wildlife that either visits or resides in the region.

Somewhere in the old town, narrow paved streets are strewn with towering palm trees, old shops, new shops, churches, medieval castles and theatres. But among the alluring chaos, tucked away out of sight, diligent local artists work away. With the Arts and Crafts Workshops Map/Guide in hand, you can explore this microcosm of creativity by foot or bicycle, meet the artists, and even have a go at your favourite craft – be it ceramics, book-binding, miniature artwork or glass blowing. Published by the Limassol Tourism Board (LTB,) the map outlines a self-guided walking tour aimed at leading you through the old town while highlighting local talent. General Manager of LTB Maria Stylianou Michaelidou, who devised the concept with her team, says that the Art Walk is designed to give you the opportunity to “find hidden gems, explore artists’ work and buy bespoke pieces of local art as an original souvenir of your visit to Cyprus.” But the Art Walk offers much more: it allows you to lose yourself in modern and ancient culture, without getting lost. This is where you’ll find the stuff of lasting memories: handmade bio ice-creams with edible flowers at the rustic Uluwatu Specialty Coffees, the old mosque, or a modern bohemian / graphic diner named Boho Restobar – a treasure trove in a tiny alley where hanging plants stream from building to building. Topiary stands before multi-coloured graffitied walls, while a mural of an Asian lady with a child on her back is certainly worth an Instagram post. There are old Cypriot tailors and antique shops to see and people to meet, including the affable George, whose men’s clothes shop has been there for over 50 years. Take some time to enjoy a truly unique experience that is unlike anything else on the island.

HIDDEN ART SPOTS Here’s a glimpse of a few of the studios on the route to give you an idea of what you can expect. You’re always welcome to drop in, but make sure to give the artists a call in advance if you’re interested in classes or workshops. LOVENLIGHT DESIGN & CRAFTSMANSHIP

ARCUBE STUDIO

An enormous metal door and tiny signpost mark the homely studio of woodworking brothers Navid and Sahand Gholipour. What began as a hobby fuelled by passion eventually grew into a successful business dealing with anything and everything wood, including custom-made furniture, small ornaments, lighting and the duo’s signature multi-coloured spinning tops.

From his sleek glass corner building, founder Panayiotis Stelikos specialises in architecture and interior, textile and furniture design. “We focus on mid-century design: chairs, armchairs and sofas,” Panayiotis explains. Old pieces of furniture are collected, restored and dressed with fresh upholstery to create original new designs.

MAKERS WILL MAKE THEODOSIS THEODOSIOU ICONS AND PAINTINGS A visit to this internationally recognised iconographer is a must. Housed in an ancient stone building, the characterful studio is cloaked by, two giant trees - each 100 years of age, and the oldest in the area according to the mayor of Limassol. In the cosy studio you’ll learn all about artistic iconography and Byzantine techniques.

This self-proclaimed makers’ space generates a whole range of design-related projects. “We’re interested in all kinds of handicrafts, from keyrings or gifts to large-scale installations, sculptures or scenery for plays,” explains Eva Korae. The powerful on-site laser machine will cut through anything except metal, including paper, wood, plastic, leather or cardboard and will even engrave on paper.

DIATEHNON ARTS AND CULTURE

Glass expert Roswitha Lobnique has been working with various glass techniques — including etched, stained and textured architectural glass — since 1985. She creates bespoke pieces, from Tiffany lampshades to glass jewellery, freestanding sculptures and breath-taking stained glass windows. Behind the shopfront’s cacophony of colour, stained glass sliding doors lead to an enormous workspace where the alchemy happens.

Inside the stunning 1930s listed building, this cultural centre aims to preserve and promote arts and crafts that reference local cultural heritage. Although the focus is on ceramics and instrument making, you can buy ready-made homeware including mugs, fridge magnets or historical perfume jugs, or use the potters’ wheels and let Manolis Hadjimanolis reveal the importance of this craft to the history of Cyprus.

Marios Tsiouroutis wanted to work in hotels as far back as he can remember. And in 1993, fresh out of hotel school, the zealous young recruit kick-started that childhood dream, with his first job as a waiter at the Four Seasons Tropical Restaurant. The very same establishment in which, today – 27 years on – he is now Assistant Maître. His career journey – over what Marios fondly calls “a lifetime” – at the hotel has seen this natural hospitality professional hone his innate skills across various department and Marios loves that his new role provides an opportunity to build real relationships and genuine connections with customers – especially the large number of repeat guests, many of whom Marios now considers friends. “With me, this friendliness is genuine and authentic,” he says. “I really care about the guests, and they can feel it. I want them to see this as their second home.” A primary point of contact at breakfast, lunch or dinner, Marios can usually be found greeting guests with a smile and his signature: “Kalimera, pos eise?” (‘Good morning how are you?’). Watching him oversee the buffet stations and service stations, it is clear that hospitality comes naturally to Marios. But his passion for his work is equally matched by an innate curiosity and fervent desire to continue learning. “The hotel is my school, and my teachers are my colleagues,” Marios reveals. “They inspired my own management style: I always want to help my staff feel good about their work; I build them up through positive feedback, help them develop as professionals.” Marios’ team typically begin their Tropical workday with a gettogether to catch up and make sure everyone is well. And Marios, who sees himself first as a friend and then as a boss, prides himself on having a strong team who can both communicate openly and count on each other – and on him – for support. This care and concern for one another, suggests Marios, extends throughout the Four Seasons; and he believes guests can discern this considerate, compassionate approach in the notoriously approachable style of service. In fact, he frequently refers to the hotel team as “one big family”! But Marios has his own, relative, connection within the hotel: While Marios’ mother worked for many years as a respected cook in the hotel’s kitchens, his son is currently employed in the minibar and room service department – making for a true hotel family. “I’m very proud that the next generation is following in my footsteps,” Marios smiles. “It feels good to know that this Four Seasons hospitality legacy is continuing.” As a father to four children, Marios spends his spare time with his family and keeping fit. But he admits that the hotel numbers amongst his great loves, and he credits the establishment with making his dreams come true. “I love the Four Seasons so much,” he says, smiling ear to ear. “I feel this hotel is my home away from home, and I do my best to make sure our guests feel exactly the same!”



LIMASSOL DIVING ROUTES

The Limassol Tourism Board is a partner in the ANDIKAT act "Diving routes in marine protected areas of the Eastern Mediterranean Development of diving tourism network", aiming to upgrade and further promote diving tourism. The project is co-funded by the European Union and national resources of Greece and Cyprus (Interreg VA Greece – Cyprus Program 2014-2020). In the context of the project a mobile application was developed offering information about the Dasoudi and Ancient Amathus artificial reefs and diving routes, a short animation video was created to showcase Dasoudi artificial reef and promote environmental protection, a nine-minute 360⁰ video was created to demonstrate the beauty and special characteristics of the diving spot which enables people that cannot dive due to health reasons to experience diving with the use of VR technology and a short video was produced to show the results of the project. In order to create awareness and interest in diving, a dome was acquired with a capacity of 25 adults or 40 children for the screening of a 180⁰ documentary about the seabed, bloggers were invited to promote the diving routes, outdoor awareness events were organized and promotional material was produced. Additionally, a workshop was organized on artificial reef management hosting renowned speakers from Italy, Malta, Belgium, Greece and Cyprus, while an underwater sculpture park in under study to further upgrade the Dasoudi artificial reef. To assist people with reduced mobility two floating wheelchairs and two seascooters were made available for use and a fixed track mechanism in which a wheelchair can be moved in and out of water to give people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy swimming, completely unassisted was purchased and is available to the public May to October. The €3.2 million ANDIKAT act made a significant contribution towards the creation of diving routes in protected sea areas in Eastern Mediterranean and the development of a network of such routes, and substantially upgraded the tourism product in the field of diving tourism.
