Dear Alumni and Friends of the Mitchell Institute, Thanks to your support, the past year was one of unprecedented progress and momentum at the Mitchell Institute.

I am deeply grateful to report that our generous friends and Alumni significantly increased their contributions in 2023 to both the annual fund and endowment, making it possible, once again, to expand the number of $10,000 Mitchell Scholarships funded by 20. This brings the total number of Mitchell Scholarships offered to 185 this year and represents the successful completion of the second phase of our plan to ultimately award 200 scholarships annually.

Sustaining and growing our annual revenue makes it possible for us to serve the increased number of Mitchell Scholars with a full array of social and financial support they need to succeed. With your continued investment, we will disrupt generational poverty for more Maine families, ensure that more hardworking young people in Maine have access to higher education, and provide communities statewide with a stronger and more educated workforce.

ANNUAL REPORT DEDICATION The 2023–2024 Mitchell Institute Annual Report is dedicated in loving memory to Lauren Segal, a steadfast and generous supporter of Mitchell Scholars, a former Executive Committee member of the Institute’s Board of Directors, and former chair of the Board’s Scholarship and Research Committee.

Upon joining the Board in 2017, Lauren helped guide the organization with humanity and wisdom gained through her experience as CEO of the Greater Twin Cities United Way, the second-largest United Way in the nation, and later President of Scholarship America, the national organization for local chapters of Dollars for Scholars.

Lauren’s six years of Board service and leadership of the Scholarship and Research Committee were marked by significant growth in the organization’s support for Mitchell Scholars.

Based on a practice at Scholarship America, Lauren encouraged the Mitchell Institute to create a special fund to provide additional emergency financial support for Scholars. Today, the organization’s “Support Our Scholars Fund” annually provides about $30,000 to Scholars facing unexpected hardships that would otherwise derail their degree completion. She also advocated for expanding the number of Mitchell Scholarships awarded each year.

Since then, the Mitchell Institute has awarded 40 more Mitchell Scholarships statewide.

Lauren, who is pictured with her husband of 40 years, Richard Grigos, at the Mitchell Institute’s MILE I Weekend for Scholars, succumbed to ALS on September 26, 2023. Her impact on the organization and Mitchell Scholars will be felt for generations to come.

YOUR SUPPORT FUELS A MISSION THAT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER The mission of the Mitchell Institute—to increase the likelihood that young people from every community in Maine will aspire to, pursue, and achieve a college education—is as vital today as it was when Senator George J. Mitchell founded Maine’s premier scholarship organization nearly 30 years ago. Every year, we offer at least one $10,000 scholarship to a college-going graduate from each of Maine’s public high schools because we continue to believe in the timeless words of Senator Mitchell: “No one should be guaranteed success … but everyone should have a fair chance to succeed.” Since our founding in 1995, the Mitchell Institute has awarded $24.3 million in scholarship, fellowship, and contingency funds to more than 3,000 Scholars and Alumni who hail from every community in Maine.

WHY WE CONTINUE TO PROVIDE SO MUCH MORE THAN A SCHOLARSHIP Through nearly three decades of experience and evidence-based research, we know that student success in college depends on more than money. Additional support and guidance during college increase Mitchell Scholars’ chances of attaining a degree, finding meaningful employment in Maine, and strengthening their communities long after college. The Mitchell Institute offers Scholars a broad range of wraparound supports and resources during and after college to help them hone leadership skills, find and pursue career exploration opportunities, and develop networks that are vital to finding satisfying and purposeful work.

For more than 25 years, Scholars and Alumni have reported that the Mitchell Institute’s distinctive combination of financial and personal support makes a world of difference for them and their families. That’s why we say the Mitchell Scholarship is so much more than a scholarship—and it always will be.

MILE

I

As high-achieving college students, Mitchell Scholars aren’t often able to step away from their studies, reflect on their purpose as Scholars, and build a sense of community with Institute staff and other Scholars outside their own colleges. Designed for current college students, the Mitchell Institute Leadership Experience (MILE) I Weekend is held in early October at the New England Outdoor Center in Millinocket. Participating Mitchell Scholars develop leadership, communication, teamwork, and relationship-building skills while whitewater rafting on the Penobscot, hiking to the summit of Mount Katahdin, completing a community service project within Baxter State Park, and making friendships that will last a lifetime.

If I had the opportunity to meet with a donor who was responsible for my Mitchell Scholar experience, first I would say thank you. I would also tell them how much being a Mitchell Scholar has impacted my life and how much it has helped me to grow into the person I am today. I experienced a lot of anxiety entering my first year of college, especially coming from such a rural community as Calais and going to a prestigious college like Bates. Being a Mitchell Scholar helped give me the confidence to enter that first year knowing that I had the ability to succeed.

As a first-generation college student, the thought of navigating college was daunting. Through many coffee meetings and various visits to the Mitchell Institute, I forged genuine connections with mentors who not only believed in my potential but also encouraged me to push beyond my comfort zone. With the support of the Mitchell Fellowship, I was able to travel to Kenya, where I immersed myself in a rich tapestry of culture, community, and learning. The healthcare initiatives I experienced there shaped my vision of the kind of provider I hope to become. The impact of those I’ve met within the Mitchell Institute community transcends mere connections—their impact on my life is immeasurable, and I am grateful for the privilege of being part of such a remarkable community.

The Mitchell Institute continues to offer awards of up to $1,500 to Scholars and Alumni to support their pursuit of career-related internships, professional certifications, study-abroad experiences, and service projects. These investments, which Scholars and Alumni can apply for and receive multiple times, empower them to pursue professional development opportunities regardless of financial hurdles. In 2023, the Mitchell Institute awarded nearly $99,000 in Fellowships to 83 Mitchell Scholars and Alumni.

Contingency

Funds

The Mitchell Institute continues to offer Scholars two additional sources of funding so that unforeseen or ongoing financial crises don’t deter them from degree completion. While the SOS (Supporting Our Scholars) Fund provides grants to Scholars who have encountered temporary financial challenges such as health emergencies or unexpected changes in their living circumstances, the SPARC (Subsidy Providing Assistance with Recurring Costs) Fund is available to help financially vulnerable Scholars with ongoing expenses and challenges, such as food insecurity, course materials, and transportation costs. Both funds help keep Scholars on track by allowing them to stay focused on their academic progress. In 2023, the Mitchell Institute awarded nearly $61,000 in contingency funding to 50 Mitchell Scholars.

No-Agenda

Coffee Meetings

When Mitchell Scholars and Alumni have a question or two, the Mitchell Institute staff is quick to say, “A no-agenda coffee meeting could be just the thing for you.” Held virtually or at a place of their choosing, these chats provide Mitchell Scholars and Alumni with a chance to ask Institute staff a broad range of questions and learn about resources available to support their goals. Common topics raised by Scholars and Alumni include choosing a major, exploring internships and career opportunities, applying to grad school, and sharing personal and professional interests.

Campus Receptions

Held annually in fall and spring, receptions are opportunities to introduce Scholars to campus leaders and resources and help them build connections with other Scholars. The gatherings also provide staff with an opportunity to promote the Institute’s array of programs and supports.

MILE II Striving for career success has long been a key part of the Mitchell Scholar culture and experience. Scholars know that to distinguish themselves in a competitive labor market, their classroom learning must be complemented by real-world experience gained through internships and knowledge gained through informational interviews with practitioners. To help Scholars learn how to navigate the internship search process as well as form the networks that can yield internship and career opportunities, the Mitchell Institute Alumni Council (MIAC) organizes the annual Mitchell Institute Leadership Experience (MILE) II in March. This daylong program is generously sponsored

by Unum and provides more than 60 Mitchell Scholars and young Alumni with opportunities to meet with business and community leaders from across Maine and attend interactive sessions on topics such as developing resumes and cover letters that get noticed, sharpening interviewing skills, and how to activate your network for the internship and job search.

When my high school’s college counselor described the Mitchell Scholarship as more than just financial support, I believed her, but the full extent of its significance was beyond my grasp. Nearly five years later, it stands as one of the most profound experiences of both my academic and professional journey. Being a part of the Mitchell Institute has meant receiving personalized care and attention. The informal coffee meetings with staff, who expressed a genuine interest in catching up and listening to my experiences, were unexpected yet deeply meaningful. Engaging with the Mitchell Institute’s network has opened doors to numerous events and opportunities, from the MILE II event to entrepreneurship workshops that even led to a career-defining trip to Silicon Valley. The support from the Institute has been a blessing not just to me but to my family as well, as my sister is also a Mitchell Scholar. We are deeply grateful for the lifelong support the Mitchell Institute provides.

I remember the day I found out I received the Mitchell Scholarship.

Knowing that this scholarship was going to make it possible for me to attend college filled me with relief and excitement for the future, but I don’t think I ever anticipated just how much the Mitchell Institute was going to have an impact on me. It will forever be more than just a scholarship.

As an alumna of the Mitchell Institute, I look back on all the friendships I have made with fellow Scholars, the connections I was able to make attending MILE I and MILE II, and the support I received from the Mitchell Institute staff, and I can’t help but feel so fortunate that I was part of something that is not only beneficial to me, but to thousands of Maine students across the state.

The Truc Huynh

Alumni Giving Society Truc Huynh, a remarkably gifted and altruistic Scholar Alumnus, who passed away at the age of 40 in June 2022, was the epitome of a Mitchell Scholar. He was a first-generation college graduate, who never forgot his roots, worked hard to achieve his dreams, and dedicated his life to giving back to his community. While Truc’s history of community service is nearly legendary in the greater Portland area, what may not be as widely known is that he made financial contributions back to the Mitchell Institute at a level that matched and eventually surpassed the entire amount of the Scholarship award that he received in support of his education at Bowdoin. Seventeen Mitchell Scholar Alumni have since joined Truc in making financial contributions to the Institute that match or exceed the Scholarship they received, and we established the Truc Huynh Alumni Giving Society to recognize that level of commitment to the Mitchell Institute.
