Dear Friends,
I am honoured to be appointed as President of the Chantilly Polo Club. It is now my responsibility to promote the idea of its founder, Patrick Guerant Hermès: to make the club an important venue for French polo, combining conviviality and fair play.
One of my priorities is to ensure the quality of the fields that have made the Club’s reputation. During the off-season, all the Polo staff and Philippe Perrier’s team worked hard on maintaining them with our Green Keeper, and in particular on the complete re-sanding of the Honneur 1, No. 1, No. 2 and PGH 1 fields.
This month of September promises to be an eventful one, with many fringe tournaments related to the Paprec French Open (from 7 to 22 September) and the Castel Trophy (6/8 goals). For the eighth consecutive year, we will also be hosting the Women’s French Open (from 17 to 22 September). You can follow our news via the Club’s Instagram account and the Open games live on PoloLine TV.
This visibility is in line with our desire to further encourage the arrival of foreign teams; a dedicated position will be created for their reception, to meet their requests, and to ensure their comfort and the well-being of their horses.
But sport is nothing without the joy of gathering together to celebrate it, so I hope to see many of you at the Vendredis de Chantilly and the musical apéros polo drinks held every Friday in September during exhibition matches. During the Open, many exhibitors will liven up the Sports Village, and a new Tacos Bar is located at the edge of the fields. In addition, the new Orangery will allow us to organise more top-quality events and receptions on a more regular, year-round basis, bringing a new dynamic to this unique venue.
SAVE THE DATE:
Saturday 21 st, themed evening with DJ. More details to follow...
Last but not least, I would like to thank our loyal sponsors, who help us to create these events, as well as all the club’s staff, players, and fans, who are its lifeblood.
SPORTIVELY YOURS, ARNAUD DE CHÊNEVARIN
It was exactly 300 years ago that Louis Henri de Bourbon, seventh prince of Conde and prime minister of Louis XV, was "dismissed" by the king and desired to return to his home of Chantilly. In 1719 began the construction of what would become the world’s most magnificent monument to the horse: a palace for horses. It is truly without equal.
The Domaine de Chantilly is celebrating the tercentenary of its world equestrian treasure with a number of can’t miss events.

The lineup for the 19th French Open Paprec is of exceptional athletic quality, drawing the players of the Argentine Open, winner and players of the Copa Camara, the semi finalist of the last US Gold Cup and two of the five top French athletes.
Once again Chantilly will welcome esteemed starters like Clemente Zavaleta (h7), returning for this year’s Open. It’s a chance for the tournament and for Sainte-Mesme, the titleholder. This top player will find himself facing his teammate, Tito Guinazu (h7), for the Argentine Open. Guinazu will play on the German team Polo Gestüt Schockemöhle with French Pierre Henri Ngoumou (h6).
It’s the team of Alwin Schockemöhle’s daughter, the legendary Olympic show jumping champion of 1976.
The winner of the 2018 Copa Camara, Martin Aguerre Junior, will also attempt the Argentine Open qualifier. But before that, Agurre Junior will faithfully don the colors of Marquard Media in Chantilly behind his unwavering captain, the handicap 5 Jota Chavanne.
Spanish captain Alejandro Aznar too presents a great team, Marques de Riscal, which includes the Argentine Santiago Cernadas, handicap 7, who was recently a semi-finalist in the US Gold Cup in Palm Beach.
One French team, the defending champion, feature a Spaniard, a Swiss (who won this title in 2015 and 2016) and a German for this French international season climax.
If "Open" in in the name of this tournament, it also speaks to the spirit of Chantilly Polo: which is open to all.
Behind this team competing in the French Open (with the outstanding players
Tito
Guinazu and Pierre Henri Ngoumou), is one of the most famous names in the world of horses: Schockemöhle…
Synonymous with equestrianism itself, the Schockemöhle family has demonstrated perfect mastery over nearly all its disciplines and is recognized as a true institution in the realm of equestrian sports, both in and out of Germany. The powerhouse horse family began with three brothers: Werner, Alwin and Paul. Werner was highly respected in the world of breeding. He was not only a respected lawyer, but first of all the very first ambassador for a breeding based on performance rather than strictly conformation, making him a visionary in the 80’s for sport horse reproduction. Alwin was a show jumping icone in the 70’s, and he had the results to prove it. In the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Alwin was crowed champion with Donald Rex. When Alwin was crippled
by back pain, he entrusted his horses to Franke Sloothaak (a future world champion, 94) and Thomas Frühmann of Austria, who went on to win the iconic Aachen Grand Prix and the World Cup Final in 1992. Alwin, though, did not let his condition end his career in horses. He simply adjusted, indulging his passion for trotting, to which he also excelled: winning the Prix d’Amérique in 2003 with Abano As, a horse he bred and owned himself. "I no longer follow the international show jumping circuit," Alwin said. "What I do know is that my Donald Rex would still be one of the best horses in competition today. Yet, the horse of my life is still Abano As because it was the greatest achievement to win the biggest race in the world as his breeder and an owner."
Paul, for his part, signed a historic European Championship triple in 1981, 1983 and 1985 with Deister. Perhaps the horse would never win first prize for beauty or style, but his character and athleticism was unmatched, and he captured the most prestigious titles in the world, including the Aachen Grand Prix in 1984. However, above all Paul is an entrepreneur. Despite his decision to abandon the family’s business of raising chickens (as the facilities have been converted into stables), he owns several companies including a transport company whose trucks crossthe whole Germany. But of course, his first and largest business is in horse breeding, training and sales. After the fall of the Berlin wall he immediately bought a collective farm in Lewitz measuring
3,000 hectares, which houses some 4,000 horses (700 of which are births each year). Young horses are brought up and cared for by the 200 employees! Paul also organizes PSI sports horse auction sales, where every year in December Horses from ages 3-6 are sold for up to 3 million euros!
Vanessa Schockemöhle is Alwin’s youngest daughter. It was her romantic encounter with the German 3-goaler, Patrick Maleitzke, who inspired her to transform the stables of the Montreal Olympic championship and winner of the 2003 Prix d’Amérique into a polo campo. It’s where young horses are bred and trained for sale, offering stallions of the best Argentine lines.
"The very first ambassador for a breeding based on performance rather than strictly conformation, making him a visionary."
What are the objectives of Polo Gestüt Schockemöhle?
Vanesa Schockemöhle: The concept is to provide horses with Polo Argentine blood for clients all across of Europe. You know where they’re from, their exact birthdate. All of our foals born here are chipped and DNA tested. They have their passport and all the proper paperwork, so the clients know everything about the horse and exactly what they’re getting. We have more than 50 horses in training every season, so there is plenty of options for the clients to try at one place.
What stallions do you have in the breeding program? What are some qualities you look for?
V.S.: At the moment we have six polo AACCP* stallions in our breeding program, which have bloodlines from the most important studs in the world like La Dolfina and Ellerstina. It’s really important for us that the stallions have a super character and all of our stallions are playing stallions. That’s very important to us.
What services do you offer for clients?
V.S.: We have many clients who have their horses boarded with us and we take care of everything. When they want to play a tournament we offer services where we organize everything for them, such as means of transport, accommodations, etc…
Aside from Chantilly, where can we see the Polo Gestüt Schockemöhle team competing?
V.S: We play from April to October every weekend all over Europe. This includes France, the Netherlands and England. We are really looking forward to next year because we plan to have teams competing in the biggest tournaments in Europe: the Gold Cup and Queens Cup in England.
You seem to really like Chantilly, and Patrick is coming again this year for the French Open? What is it about Chantilly that draws you?
V.S: Patrick really likes Chantilly. The fields are super and the level of Polo is amazing. The atmosphere is also really nice.

Apart from its rich history (the hunt, the birthplace of racing in France, the Grandes Ecuries, etc...), the Communauté de Communes de l’Aire Cantilienne (CCAC) is regarded as one of the most important international equine epicenters, if solely for the quality of the horses and equestrian events that take place there. This equestrian sector is strongly supported and developed by the CCAC, which has made it a premier site for the world’s sport horse population.
In particular, it is the training center and the polo club (3,200 horses) which is the soul of its equestrian life, with nearly 4,000 horses permanently living on its l’Aire Cantilienne (CCAC). Each season the level of sport builds, with up to 700 horses at the Polo Club for the Open de France, more than 500 for the Global Champions Tour (one of the biggest show jumping events in the world), 100 starters for the Prestige Cup d’Endurance in Apremont, approximately 3,000 for the renowned racing including the famous Prix du Jockey Club and the Prix de Diane, and over 100 for
the the next international competition of traditional driving. Three-dayeventing will also return to Chantilly, reminiscent of the time of the beautiful Trophée Daddy. But the horse’s presence in Chantilly life runs deeper than the sporting events, for it is ingrained in the culture, with 40 equine-artists of the Grandes Ecuries, and the tourism, with the 30 Henson horses that walk visitors through the city and in the parks of the Château. It is a perfect compliment to Chantilly, home to all disciplines — the land of the horse.
A quick study of any discipline, they can become champions in dressage, horse-ball, eventing and even showjumping. Today, it’s polo where their talents are proving to be optimal.
In 1988 the famous Jappeloup (whose mother was a Thoroughbred) won showjumping gold at the Seoul Olympics. The same year Gem Twist, a 100% Thoroughbred, won two silvers with American rider Greg Best. In the 1970’s and 80’s, the United States show jumping riders rivaled Europeans by almost exclusively crossing Thoroughbreds with horses bred for jumping at stud farms in Europe, in countries such as France, Belgium, Ireland, Germany and Holland. In 1981, Michael Matz won the World Cup with a Thoroughbred named Jet Run. Then, the commoditization of transportation across the Atlantic, coupled with the marketing power of European studbooks and the dynamism of European horse dealers, meant that the horses of the old continent quickly replaced Thoroughbreds on North American showjumping stadiums.
"In the 1970’s and 80’s, the United States show jumping riders rivaled Europeans by almost exclusively crossing Thoroughbreds with horses bred for jumping at stud farms in Europe."
It is certainly a bit of a waste of talent, and as a result European breeders often lack the blood of a lighter horse to produce offspring of more refined types. It’s to the point where Gem Twist has recently been cloned for use in today’s reproduction practices.
"In Polo, the Thoroughbred has been steadily gaining ground."
Yet, in Polo, the Thoroughbred has been steadily gaining ground. The Argentinean lines, having been selected since 1912, have evolved over the decades in Palermo for the mythic Argentine Open as threequarters to as much as seven-eights Thoroughbred. It is also not rare if they are "pure" Thoroughbreds, their lines specifically selected for polo by players who are also breeders.
The Thoroughbred phenomenon has spread to Europe, including France, one of the many reasons being the increase in transportation costs from Argentina. Many players have discovered that the Thoroughbred, with a foundation of proper training, time and patience, is perfectly suited to polo. Thanks to associations, Au-delà des Pistes in particular, it is very easy to affordably acquire retired racehorses and, providing one is a good rider, turn them gradually to polo. Last June, the Polo Club de Chantilly held a match with 16 Thoroughbreds from this organization.
Four teams are currently vying for the the title of the largest women’s tournament in Europe, which begins September 17 th , including the best player in Argentina, Lia Salvo. Yet, she won’t be able to simply rest on her laurels, for the competition is strong with women’s polo being a highly trending sport in France today. For example, Lia and her teammates will have to face the club’s "junior" team, comprised of the three Venot sisters who had a notably good start in last year’s Open. The Argentinean icon will also be up against two German teams including Las Hermanitas, as well as the Schröder sisters, reinforcing their team with the English feminine 6-goaler Rebecca Walter.
The 2019 edition will welcome back reigning champions Sainte Mesme, but this year the team is switching up its line-up. Birger Strom, Robert Strom and Gregorio Gelosi, who have just won the Open de Paris, are set to welcome Corchito Zavaleta, who returns to this competition after several years. Among other things, the fact that the qualification tournament for the Argentine Open begins later on in the year has allowed Zavaleta to be present in France from September 7-22, the dates of the Open de France.
"I am very happy to be able to play the Open de France once again, and with Sainte Mesme no less,"Zavaleta told PoloLine. "We are preparing well for the tournament, just as we prepare for everytournamentwithSainteMesme.Itis a very special tournament because it is one of the highest rated in France, and because of the dates—post Sotogrande season—it is usually trickier to win."
After breaking the curse which kept them from winning the Open for several years, Sainte Mesme finally lifted the trophy in 2018. Zavalenta explained that the victory was very important for the organization because, "it wasn’t happening for us, and not winning it was a weight on the organisation, especially since the last time they won it was in 2009."

main ports of entry into Europe, Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly is a true polo paradise, boasting eight first-class polo fields, providing the Open de France with the location it deserves.
This year’s tournament will be particularly important for Zavaleta, who has played the last three editions of the Argentine Open.
"I am very excited to be able to play again, especially since I have never won it. Not only that, but I lost the final in extra chukka—both times I played it!" said Zavaleta.
Married to Isabelle Strom, Birger’s daughter and Robert’s sister, Clemente Zavaleta, has been part of the Sainte Mesme family for several seasons, both as a player and as a manager. He is the man behind the movements of the organisation, both on and off the field. "It is always special when you play with family," he added.
Once the Open de France comes to an end, Zavaleta will return to Argentina to try and qualify for the Argentine Open. The qualification tournament is scheduled to take place between October 16-31, and La Irenita is a favorite to qualify. While his focus is currently on Chantilly, Zavaleta is always thinking about the season in Argentina: "I am very excited to continue playing with La Irenita in Argentina."
It is clear, however, that his objective is the one that lies ahead, "We are hopeful that we will be able to win the Open de France, and that is our goal," he said. "Then, it’s just a case of seeing how far we get."

Also players to watch are Ernesto Trotz (4, Jivaro), the four French players of Cavok, the only team without Argentinean player and title defender, and the spectacular Tete Storni (5, Mungo), who is one of the best pato players in Argentina, bringing together the country’s particular "forwards" style to his games. 6/8 GOALS

He then founded MiO International, where he designs and creates large animal sculptures while experimenting with new materials. For the French Open he’ll return to his first love, sports trophies, by creating a unique piece that will be awarded on the podium.
Christophe Louis Quibe is a French artist specializing in one-line illustrations (drawings made by a single stroke, without lifting the instrument off the paper). The subjects are in minimal style with abstract features that come together to make a recognizable form. The end result is beautiful, to say the least.
The art of Christophe Louis Quibe will be exhibited at the Domaine de Chantilly Polo Club during the French Open, where viewers can see his simple yet genius perception of the equine world. The mastery of Quibe is certain to leave you a lasting impression.
"Viewers can see his simple yet genius perception of the equine world."

Argentina is a "Basque colony". Many Basques emigrated to the Pampas in the 19 th century, bringing with them traditional elements of their culture: pelote (racketball), the beret (worn nowadays by of all our petiseros), and their espadrilles. Renamed "alpargatas" in Argentina, these, as fashionable as they are comfortable, prove it’s truly wonderful to walk in an Argentinian’s shoes. Thanks to Casa Fagliano, a partner of the French Open, three pairs of the elegant alpargatas will be offered a reward to the most elegant players of the Trophée Castel and of the Women’s French Open.
This tournament just may be only a "0-4" level, but it looks particularly competitive this year with 3 and 4 handicap players such as Julien Reynes and Matthieu Delfosse with 4, and Louis Jarriges and Thierry Vétois with 3. They will have to challenge the formidable German team, Gestüt Schockemöhle, and their 3-goaler Patrick Mailetzke.
