Thursday, April 29th - Prices released at 6pm Friday, April 30th - Sale starts at 1pm Intent to Bid 1pm-7pm Saturday, May 1st - Sale ends at 7pm Calf Contest Winners will be announced at 6pm MN Jr Holstein Convention at Twin Spruce Farm Registration 9:30am-10:30am Workshops 10:30am-12pm & 1pm-2:30pm Lunch & Speaker 12pm-1pm Games 2:30-3pm Business Meeting, Awards & Speaker 3pm-5pm Transition Board Meeting 5pm

Intent to Bid

Interested buyers can submit an "Intent to Bid" on Friday, April 30th from 1pm-7pm. If there is only one intent to bid, that lot is sold, if there is more than one, bidding is opened up between those individuals in $50 increments.

Animal will be sold to the winning bidder.

Bouquet of Breeds Calf Contest Roundtable gether, Platte-Vu Advent Sara-Red, who ended up being EX 94-3E and is the matriarch of our herd. The first couple of years, I helped manage Johnan Holsteins near Mantorville, Minnesota, and in 2007, we moved to our current area. We milk 12 Registered Holsteins, all Red or red carrier, and our milk is sold to Land O' Lakes. We raise our own hay, but buy the rest of our feedstuffs. All cattle are housed on bedded packs that are cleaned daily. Today, we operate our farm with the help of our three children, Curtis (11), Evelyn (8), and Agnes (6). We are also very active in our community with farm visits and consumer education.

BRET BUTTERFASS Rainbow Acres in Swanville, Minnesota milks about 1,400 cows we raise all of our replacements and the steers until finished. We have three barns that house milk cows. Most of them are in sand bedded free stalls, but the second lactation and greater cows are on a compost pack and some of the late lactation first lactation cows. We have a slat barn that houses some dry cows and springers. The other dry cows are on compost pens. We have a double 20 parallel parlor. I am the partner that is in charge of the dairy. I do 99% of the breeding, sick cow work, watch the calving area, vaccinating, and several other things that just keep the dairy moving. At the end of February we hit a new high for production with an 89 lb. tank av- ELINOR OPITZ I own New-Vue Ayrshires erage with 4.3% fat and 3.16% protein. and started buying cows when I was 14 years old in 2003. I didn't grow up on a farm, so I boarded them with other farmers until 2015. I bought the current farm in 2012. It has a double-6 herringbone parlor that hadn't seen cows in nearly a decade. I spent a few years fixing it up, and in 2015, when I was 25, I began farming full time and milked up to 60 cows, mostly registered Ayrshires. Over the last few years I have downsized to about 35 milk cows and now work full time in the feed industry along with milking. My husband and parents are actively involved, as well.

We are a grass-based dairy with about 30 acres of pasture for the milk cows and an outdoor bedded pack system year-round.

HOLLY TUMAN I grew up on a registered Brown Swiss farm, after my dad passed away in NATE DONNAY My family and I milk 50 Reg- 2017, most of the cows were sold, but I kept the istered Holsteins and a few jerseys at Sunkist cows that I had purchased and raised, under the Acres & Willvue Genetics in Glencoe, Minne- name Rockstar Genetics. RYAN GRIFFIN I am the owner and operator of Kara-Kesh Holsteins near Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Kara-Kesh Holsteins was established in 2005 when my wife Karen and I bought our first heifer to-

My sons, Reece and Asher and I moved to Ohio, and now our cattle are housed in with my boyfriend’s family’s, the R-N-R Swiss Farm, where we are milking 180 Registered Brown Swiss and a handful of Holsteins. There are also 177 heifers on the farm. Kevin and his parents’ herd, is highly respected in the Brown Swiss industry, with many bulls in AI, R-N-R Payoff Brookings being a sire that changed the breed, embryos exported, and top end heifers sold yearly. Ron and Renee Michalovich are 1st generation dairy farmers and started their herd by purchasing their first brown Swiss with their wedding money.

What are your criteria for breeding heifers/ cows? Do you use a breeding/mating program?

BUTTERFASS: Our breeding program is designed to produce and average of 50 heifer calves a month. This is accomplished by about half of the adult herd gets two chances of a Holstein bull, some sexed, mostly conventional, and the rest are bred to beef semen. On the heifers about 10% go straight to beef semen. This list is determined after their genomic test and a custom index to rank them. The rest of the heifers get two chances sexed, one conventional, and one beef. If she is still open she is moved into the steer pen.

DONNAY: Currently we are working on selling good pedigreed young show stock, but also want to breed individuals that will make EX cows.

Udder traits on the bulls are the main criteria I look at on a bull proof. Currently, we are using mostly proven sires for matings. Proven bulls are much easier for us to use being more predictable on what traits they excel in or need to be protected by. Usually when considering a proven bull we will know that they have great udders, and then will use them on cows or heifers that will compliment them.

GRIFFIN: When making breeding decisions, we focus on show ring type with an emphasis on longevity and milk quality. All cows and heifers are mated individually based on their conformation, their maternal line, sire stack and genomics.

OPITZ: I have two main criteria - good udders and positive fat & protein production. A good PTI helps as well. I choose my own sires, mostly from Select, with some Semex and ST Genetics bulls as well. I do have a number of folks that reach out for breeding bulls to purchase from me, so I raise one or two bulls a year out of my best cows.

“Breed the Cows You Want to Milk, Not What Your Neighbors Think You Should.” -Roy MacGregor TUMAN: We are breeding for udder composite, strength, positive DPR, and using proven cow families along with proven site stack pedigrees. The same bulls are being used on heifers and cows.

What sires are you currently using? Was there a certain sire that made a great impact on your herd?

BUTTERFASS: 7HO14545 Jamarco, 7HO12819 Outsiders, 7HO13922 Kite, 550HO14465 Ronald-RC, 7HO12421 Millington, 14HO14629 Sertolia, 550HO14853 Rondo, 14HO14464 Reeve-Red, 7HO12344 Rager-Red, 200HO11668 Zasberilla, 200HO11587 Circus, 200HO11586 Einstein, 200HO7952 Cheeseboy, 200HO11751 Ferraro and 200HO11722 Cockpit. We had used quite a bit of Masterful and Mogul and they sire a good portion of our older, third-lactation plus cows. We are very happy with them.

DONNAY: Proven bulls: Doorman, Sidekick, Awesome-Red, GoldChip, HighOctane and Unstopabull-Red. Unproven bulls: Crushabull, Moovin and Dice-Red. One bull that made a big impact on our herd that were ideal daughters was Golden-Oaks Alexander.

GRIFFIN: Currently we are using Latenite-P-Red, Dice-Red, Warrior-Red, Unstopabull-Red and Army-RC. The sire that has had the greatest impact on our herd was Contender-Red. We had daughters scored EX-94-2E, EX-93-2E, EX-93, EX-92 and a few that were VG. Right now, our best heifers and young cows go back to Kara-Kesh-RK Cntndr SparkRed EX-94-2E and Kara-Kesh-RK Cntndr Sparrow-Red EX-92.

OPITZ: When I started farming in 2015, Burdette wasn't new, but he was still top dog in the Ayrshire world, and I didn't actually have many cows with Burdette in their pedigree, so I used a fair bit of him in the early years. I've used plenty of Blackjack, Reagan and Predator as well as a good selection of young sires like Bostic, Roanoke and Radisson.

TUMAN: A variation of European bulls and bulls from the U.S. U.S. bulls : Richard, Winning Formula, First Choice, R-N-R Carter Poweball, Fast N Furious, Hampton and Rasta. European: Nello, Huge, Johann, Calvin and Jongleur. Telstar Aiotola was a bull back in the 90s that probably made those most impact, they had great udders and milk production.

Average age & average lactation of your herd.

BUTTERFASS: Average age is 42 months and average lactation is 2.2.

DONNAY: Average age of lactation in our herd is 2.3 lactations and average age is 4.2 years old.

GRIFFIN: Cows average 4.5 years old with 3 lactations.

OPITZ: The average age right now is only 4 and lactation just over 2. I culled heavily when I was downsizing but kept a lot of my youngstock, so the numbers are a bit unbalanced right now.

TUMAN: Average age is 52 months and 3.6 average lactation.

What age do you calve in first lactation animals?

BUTTERFASS: We calve our heifers in at about 22 months.

DONNAY: We are calving in most heifers now at 2-00.

GRIFFIN: Due to our cold winters and loose barn housing, we generally don't calve heifers October through February, so some heifers calved in at 1-10 and others 2-04.

OPITZ: Because I work with a lot of 4-Hers, I try to do mostly March and June calvings on heifers, so they are often 24-30 months old at freshening. I used to have a strictly spring-calving seasonal program, but when I went back to work off the farm I decided to spread them out and only calve in September, December, March and June/July. This allows me to group house the calves, too, which I really like as it seems to result in healthy calves and less labor.

TUMAN: 24-27 months.

Where do you see yourself and your herd in 5 years?

BUTTERFASS: In five years, I see myself still doing what I love. I am excited to see the progress the herd will make in that time with the use of the beef semen to remove the lower portion of the herds replacements we should make huge strides with our tank average and pounds of fat and protein.

DONNAY: Hard to say where myself and our herd will be in 5 years, but we would like to continue to develop show animals and deep pedigreed individuals. We hope to add a new barn to our facilities to make taking care of the majority of our animals more efficient.

GRIFFIN: With the kids getting older and more involved with the day-to-day operation of the farm, we plan to increase the amount of embryo work we do with our cows and heifers.

So, we are going to be expanding our dairy operation over the next few years to include more recipients, beef and dairy. We are also looking into bottling our own milk to sell locally.

OPITZ: I would like to narrow my focus to the most promising genetics, both type and production and continue to work with youth. Maybe someday in the far future, I would consider a value-added businesses capitalizing on Ayrshire's great tasting milk.

TUMAN: If the industry allows us, we’d like to focus on show ring type and high index animals, and hopefully milk less cows that way.

Has your farm or animals on your farm received awards on local, state or national levels?

BUTTERFASS: Our farm has not received any awards.

DONNAY: We have had two homebred animals nominated All-American and one Ayrshire cow that has been nominated.

GRIFFIN: We have been recognized by the State of Minnesota and Land O' Lakes for our milk quality each of the last 4 years. Our average SCC is under 100k. Our herd has been in the top 10 in Holstein USA National rankings for herd
