Stub-RF Olivia-Red EX-90 EX-MS 2nd Dam of #PolledPrize Heifer Manannah Pride-P-Red-TW is the heifer we decided on for the #PolledPrize at our sale and celebration of 40 years of Manannah-Valley and 5 years of #PolledPlace.

Here is a little history of this heifer and Manannah-Valley and #PolledPlace working together.

Manannah-Valley has always said, "Don't sell a herd sire you would not use for yourself." This heifer came to be through a few herd sires and purchases on the maternal side. When our friend Stub quit milking, her grand-dam Olivia came to our farm. One of the sires in this pedigree traces back to one of Stephanie's foundation cows and this heifer also goes back to Spruce Shadows, which was the foundation of Manannah-Valley. The sire of Pride-P is one of the first young sires I added to the tank at Select Sires after starting there, and is one of the most popular Homozygous Polled bulls we have.

There are 3 Master Breeders from Canada on the maternal side as well. Pride-P's twin sister is owned by Hannah Hammerly, Joel and Stephanie's daughter.

Roundtable Discussion Participants

CORSTAR FARM, Litchfield, MN, is home to Cory and Kristen Salzl along with their son Joseph. The Corstar prefix was established in 2002 and the herd is comprised of mostly Milking Shorthorns with a few Ayrshires and Guernseys.

A new barn was finished in January 2016 and has 16 tie stalls and 5 box stalls. Corstar is currently milking around 20 cows where they are fed a hay diet throughout the year and are grazed in the summer. The couple focuses on type when making mating decisions and shows cattle at the MN State Fair and World Dairy Expo. Since 2007 Corstar has earned 32 All-American nominations with 11 All-Americans and 6 Reserve All-Americans in three breeds. They have been awarded Grand Champion Milking Shorthorn at the Minnesota State Fair 4 times. Notable achievements at World Dairy Expo include 2014 Reserve Grand Champion Milking Shorthorn and in 2018 Intermediate Champion, Reserve Intermediate Champion and winning the Best Three Females class. The herd is also known for top production, Corstar Lovely Lady-EXP was recognized with the 2017 AMSS Top Milk Record award with 4-06 2X 365D 38,410M 3.3% 1265F 2.9% 1119P. DAVID HANSON grew up on a dairy and crop farm in Goodridge, Minnesota where they milked around 45 registered Ayrshires under the Good-Vue prefix. Growing up David showed dairy cattle in both 4-H and open class at the County, State and National levels as well as being a member of the Sibley/Nicollet/Pennington county 4-H dairy judging team. In 2013 David graduated from the University of Minnesota with

a degree in Animal Science – Dairy Production.

While at the U of M David was member of the judging team that won national judging contests at both Louisville and Harrisburg and placed 4th at World Dairy Expo. In 2016 Good-Vue expanded to 120 cows being milked with two robotic milking units in a free-stall setup that also incorporated an automated feeding system. The herd now consists of about 80 Ayrshires and 40 Holsteins. Around this same time David moved to Nicollet, Minnesota to farm with his wife Dr. Ashley Swenson and her parents at Forest-Lawn Holsteins. Forest-Lawn is home to 240 milk cows, mainly Holsteins, along with a few Brown Swiss registered under the C & A prefix. David currently sits on the National Ayrshire board of directors and Ashley is a full time embryo transfer veterinarian. They, along with both families, are very active in all things dairy, which includes day to day farm activities, genetic marketing, and showing cattle locally and nationally.

KAYLA HERKENHOFF is the Marketing/ Communications Assistant at Minnesota/Select Sires Co-op, Inc. Kayla’s passion for agriculture started early, growing up on a 130-cow dairy farm outside of Freeport, MN. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Communication with a minor in Animal Science from North Dakota State University. Kayla is excited to share her knowledge of calf care to help make your next generation the best. A few topics that will be covered include colostrum and milk replacer practices, caring for calves with scours and calf management systems.

ROLLINGRIVER, Dan Brasch and Kourtney Meister, milk 30 registered Holsteins and Jersey with their children, Kamrie and Bentley. They are very passionate about breeding and developing high type cattle that last. They enjoy working with the youth and are always open to answer anyone’s questions. They have developed 3-94 pt cows and numberious EX cows. Dan and his father mike have breed 15 all American nominations, including RollingRiver Press Release EX 91 2018 intermidiate Champ at the All American. They enjoy the simple things and cerish the moments they get to spend together on the farm taking care of their animals as a family.

LAURA SCHIMEK lives and works on her family’s dairy farm, Albert Bros Pine Shelter Farms, in Pine Island, MN, along with her two children Reagan and Jacob. They currently milk 550 registered Holstein cows. The farm has had two key cow families rise to the top over the years: the Lucy family and the Cheyenne family.

As a Jr. Holstein member Laura always enjoyed showing and was often seen leading a black cow in the ring. Pine -Shelter Lucina Fargo was named Grand Champion of World Dairy Expo’s Jr Holstein show in 1997. Then in 2003 Laura’s sister, Molly led the Grand Champion of World Dairy Expo’s International Holstein show, Pine-Shelter Cheyenne. Showing cows is a passion and takes much dedication and hardwork.

Laura is the calf manager and herdswoman at the farm. She enjoys helping friends at sales and shows as well as developing that show passion in her children thru 4-H and Jr. Shows.
