GR Acres Linebacks - Paul Giese - WI
My dad, uncle and I milk 60 cows in a double 5 parlor and freestall barn. We crop 270 acres and I also help out various neighbors from time to time whenever they need help with milking or miscellaneous stuff. We are located in Mayville, WI. We have been breeding for Polled for 8 to 10 years. We started out using one or two bulls that our Accelerated rep recommended so we wouldn't have to dehorn as many calves. The last 5 years or so, I've really started to breed with a lot more Polled bulls. I really like talking Polled bulls with my good friend Matt Goers and we always show each other new exciting Polled bulls that we find to use. I like to use well balanced bulls that have decent type, positive milk and a good pedigree behind them. One of our first Polled cows is GR-Acres Halfback Frosty. She was recently classified EX-91 and she has a Polled Red Lineback son, Fireball P-Red, that we collected. Most of our cows are grades, but we have a really nice Macnut PP x Roy x Hi Metro that I'm extremely excited to start breeding Polled daughters from. I have some embryos in our semen tank and think it would be really cool to try and breed some Polled daughters from those down the road hopefully. The most fun cow I'm breeding Polled daughters from right now is GR-Acres Halfback Frosty P EX-91. We have daughters by Ocean PP, Ammo P, Macnut PP, Derringer P-Red, Done Right P-Red, Addiction P-Red and Polled Lineback daughters from Ace P-RC and Halfback P-Red. I have been using Honda PP, Haggai PP, Ramp Up PP, Macnut PP, Kingsize P, Joyrider PPRed, Apex P-Red, Derringer P-Red and my own lineback bull Fireball P-Red. Looking at the past, present and future of Polled bulls, I think the past five years, the genetics of Polled bulls have come a long ways. If you breed for a specific type of cow, you can find a Polled bull that will fit your breeding philosophy. It seems every bull stud has multiple Polled bulls now that are very exciting and there are also some really cool privately collected Polled bulls. The first thing I'd like to see available in the future is Mirand PP-RC semen in the US, or at least some Polled sons become available from him. I'd like to see more PP polled bulls with higher type, but not sacrificing milk in the process. I think the future for Polled in the Holstein breed is in 10 to 15 years, there will only be Polled bulls available and nothing will have horns anymore. For Linebacks, I hope more and more Polled genetics will come into the breed. Something I've really been working hard at is trying to bring Polled to the breed with no Halfback blood and not too much Holstein blood. I have a really cool Polled Ace P-RC from a Polled Addiction P daughter. I'm planning to test her and see if she is Homozygous Polled. If she is, I can hopefully do some really fun matings to bring more Polled to the Lineback breed.

This list ranks by GJPI, the top 100 polled females recorded with Herd Register status or that are Generation Count 4 to 6 with a BBR of 100. To be included, they must have their own genotype; chip density is listed in the GT column. Cows must have calved within the past 27 months and not have a termination code associated with the current lactation. Heifers must be no older than three years of age on August 1, 2020 and not have a GPTA based on lactation information.

Polled Brown Swiss at New Generation Genetics Strive for the Best
In 2013 the #1 G-PPR heifer in the breed sold in the Brown Swiss National Convention Sale held in Milwaukee and the buyers Dave Kulp, PA & Dan Chard, NJ of the Kulp-Terra prefix purchased her while she carried a first choice contract to NGG. In discussing with the new owners there were 2 routes to take with her. One by using the highest G-PPR bull available and the 2nd route that we were intrigued by was trying to make a polled bull out of the best pedigree ever in the Brown Swiss polled market. For roughly two years by 2013 we had had interest from breeders for polled genetics with an elite pedigree and in the current bull selections having both wasn't an option. We searched for the right bull with the highest milk available and found Freidens Parade *NP. Cara was flushed to him and the result in 2014 was NGG's first heterozygous polled bull 54BS555 Kulp-Terra Parade CAR ET *NP. Car sold with a very good level of success and was solid for production, type and PPR but was short on health traits. Our next bulls we needed to have at an elite level of G-PPR for not just polled bulls as Car was #1 polled but ranking in the top 10 for all non polled bulls to increase sales. In early 2018 a bull was tested by one of our best customers Double W Farm, CO and we found him on the weekly genomic bull run. This bull was 176 G-PPR ranking him in the top 25% of the entire breed at the time. A quick phone call was made and our 2nd and to this day most popular polled Brown Swiss bull 54BS586 Double W KADE *NP came to NGG. We found that since Kade was a top bull for components, PPR and DPR he sold to everyone as he ranked not just #1 polled but #8 overall for genomic young sires. 20 This#PolledPlace success really pushed us to focus on making our offer-
ing the best in the polled arena. More bulls were brought in like the former #1 G-Type and G-UDC polled bull 54BS589 Trout Run Hilltop JAGER P ET. Jager was the result of taking the highest ranking polled milking female Trout Run Driver Jan P and mating with the at the time #1 G-Type bull Dynamite and the result was the first polled bull at +1.0 type. We added in an offering from Switzerland 196BS54175 VICTOR P as well to offer an outcross option to polled breeders from one of the most popular show families in Switzerland. Our newest offering just released in August 2020 is one we are very excited about. NGG offers two popular bulls 54BS577 SILVER (former #1 G-PPR) and his maternal brother 54BS601 SALSA (current #1 G-Type) and the breeder Brian Lammers, OH wanted to make the highest type polled bulls ever offered. The maternal sister to Salsa and Silver La Rainbow Daredevil Sweet Siesta ET was flushed to the most complete polled bull Kade *NP and the result was our newest offering 54BS604 La Rainbow Sweet SPARK *NP ETV. Spark is the #1 G-Type, Milk & Udder Composite polled bull in the breed. Spark is A2/A2, BB and comes with endless options for all breeders. He is from a prolific cow family and we hope he becomes our best polled selling bull to date! For the future we are "All In" on the polled industry and are working hard to bring in another top G-PPR polled bull as well as finally find a way to make a Homozygous polled bull. We do have some potential avenues for both and if you stay tuned we hope to bring those to the market in the coming years. What will remain is that NGG will strive to be the leader in Polled Brown Swiss genetics and will always offer the most complete polled bulls on the market.

Behind that you’ll find some of the old Elm-Park breeding which was a solid base for so many good red cattle over the years, with this branch featuring the EX-90 Allimar Misty Calico family. Another red Webster P son you may like brings a little more show type to the table with +2.33 type and big open frames. Vogue Redeye P-Red from Semex isn’t just fancy type though, he’ll provide you with good health traits, solid components and A2A2 & BB genes as well. Making him even more special is the fact he is a half brother to the Polled bull everyone is talking about - Mirand PP. Don’t miss out on this promising red bull! If red isn’t your thing, check out a new bull at Alta Genetics named Peak AltaFandom P. This new sire debuts at +2837 GTPI and has a unique aAa of 246. His linear shows he will make tall and open cattle with just enough set to the leg, and beautiful high and wide udders. His +.08% protein and +.16% fat make him even more appealing to make some outstanding profitable cattle. He’s an AltaHotJob son from a AltaMighty P tracing back to the great maternal H line at Cookiecutter Holsteins. Looking further back into the family brings us to the one and only Snow-N Denises Dellia EX95-2E GMD DOM, and we all know that means cows that last!

Polled Testing
There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED. One copy of Polled-Celtic & 1 copy of Polled-Friesian molecular markers are present. All offspring will be polled.
