Polled Pioneers: History of Naturally Hornless Dairy Cattle in North America, the most comprehensive history of polled dairy cattle ever written is now available.

Introduction There is a growing awareness of the polled trait in dairy cattle and in North America, public opinion is moving quickly in favor of practices that reduce or eliminate any type of animal suffering. As dairy herds become larger and qualified labor is increasingly scarce, elimination of unpleasant tasks such as dehorning will become a priority.

For years, there has been talk about polled genetics. The beef cattle industry quickly grasped the idea of polled cattle and today it is rare to see a horned beef animal, in fact “horned breeds” are a novelty. For the most part, dairy farmers have not seen the need for naturally hornless cattle. Until recently, with a few notable exceptions, polled dairy cattle in North America remained part of a niche market.

In the future, the increased awareness and interest in the polled trait will be driven not only by animal welfare but also by convenience. The most efficient method of dehorning is with genetics.

The welfare of our cattle on farms and ranches is and must continue to be a priority. Any practice that inflicts discomfort on our animals must be re-evaluated. We need to ask the question: Is there an alternative method that will eliminate pain caused by that practice?

The rules have changed. What may have been acceptable in the past is not necessarily accept- able today. We need to be pro-active and implement production practices that are acceptable and attractive to those who consume our products. Using genetics to eliminate horns painlessly is the right thing to do.

It is good for the consumer, it is good for our animals and it is good for the future of animal agriculture.

Some Highlights HOLSTEIN: George E. Stevenson of Clarks Summit, PA, was the first breeder in the United States to develop a herd of polled Holsteins. Stevenson was a civil engineer and a partner in one of the leading consulting engineer companies in the East. He was a highly respected expert in the anthracite coal industry.

George Stevenson bought two polled daughters of the polled cow Cornucopia Plum Johanna 90522, from C. A. Pratt of LeRaysville, Pennsylvania, in 1912. Two years later, he acquired the dam and two more polled daughters from A. C. Slifer. Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Although sired by horned bulls, all four daughters were polled.

Stevenson’s herd was the primary source of polled animals for almost twenty years.

Many males and some females were sold to breeding establishments over a wide area although primarily in the Northeast. Stevenson’s friends nicknamed him “Hornless George” because of his passion for the polled 6trait. #PolledPlace His farm was known as Origin Farm, so

named because it was the original home of naturally polled Holsteins.

Walter Schultz and his son Douglas of Nicollet, MN were Holstein breeders who sold more than 6500 polled bulls in 25 states and nearly every county of Minnesota between 1948 and 1992. They delivered bull calves in the back of a pickup truck driving over one million miles and wearing out five pickups to do it. Walter Schultz of Nicollet, Minnesota, became the leading promoter of polled Holsteins in the United States in the late 1940s. His efforts to promote polled Holsteins continued for more than a quarter century until his death March 4, 1974. His son Douglas continued these activities until the herd was sold in 1994.

Pennsylvania became the focal point of polled Holstein genetics in the 1960s and 70s. Two Pennsylvania herds have supplied the key bloodlines that have impacted polled breeding world-wide. They are Burket-Falls (David Burket) and Hickorymea (T. Edward Johnson).

David Burket, East Freedom, PA, purchased 11 polled purebred Holsteins in Wisconsin in the early 1960s. One of those original Wisconsin cows gave birth to a polled heifer calf which was named Princess Fayne Houwtje. The Burkets didn’t pay much attention to this cow at first, but she became an outstanding producer and made seven consecutive records over 1,100 pounds of fat.

That was exceptional production during the 1960s and with such outstanding records on top of being polled, the Burkets saw value in “Princess.” Today nearly all of the 100 milking cows and 170 replacements at Burket Falls descend from “Princess.”.

T. Edward Johnson and his sons Keel and Chip, Airville, PA milk 120 cows in a 60-cow stanchion barn. Hickorymea’s contibutions are especially striking not only for the polled trait and the Red Factor but because their cattle have performed exceptionally well for others especially the bulls that entered AI service. Johnson established his herd in the early to mid-1960s and started selecting for the polled trait in 1969 when he purchased semen from Burket-Falls. The first polled calf was born in March 1970.

Many of the top polled Holsteins in the world trace to Hickorymea bred cattle. Some of the most famous animals that Johnson sold to others include Hickorymea Man Outfit-P (EX-90-EX-MS) sold to Lirr Farms, Viroqua, Wisconsin, Hickorymea Manoman Opine-P (EX-90), sold to Regancrest, Waukon, Iowa and Hickorymea Judge Maren P.; polled and Red Factor carrier was sold to Roy MacGregor and Scott Wilson of Ontario.

JERSEY: The Polled Jersey originated in Ohio sometime prior to 1895. Two strains were developed, the first to appear being founded by crosses of registered Jersey bulls on common muley (hornless) cows. These

were graded up by the continued use of purebred Jersey sires, selection being made of the polled offspring of each generation, the horned progeny being discarded. Thus, originated what was later known as the single- standard strain. As in the case of the Polled Shorthorns and Polled Herefords, the development of the single-standard strain was soon followed by the appearance of a double-standard strain, founded by a few naturally hornless sports which were discovered in registered herds of horned Jersey cattle. These were bred among themselves or crossed with registered horned Jerseys, followed by selection for the polled head, and the strain was developed in this way.

In 1895 five breeders of single-and doublestandard Polled Jerseys met at Cedarville, Ohio, and organized a registry association known as the American Polled Jersey Cattle Company.

The Chittenden family of Dutch Hollow Farm at Schodack Landing, NY, has been breeding polled Jerseys since the early 1950s.

Nearly every polled Jersey in the world carries Dutch Hollow genetics in their pedigree.

One of their bulls, Dutch Hollow Oliver-P has been the high selling bull in semen sales at a major US AI center during the past two years, out-pacing his horned contemporaries.

Willow Brook Farms, Hendersonville, TN; bred horned Jerseys with great success from 1915 until 1928 when they purchased one polled registered Jersey heifer. From that single animal they developed the largest herd of polled Jerseys in America. Willow Brook Farms were owned by Lucien Reed Anderson (1887-1968) and family. Willow Brook Farms in cooperation with Robert M. Newman, Huntsville, Alabama; Fair Weather Farms, New Lebanon, New York; and T.D. Harness, Sulphur Springs, Texas, hosted the First National Polled Jersey Sale on October 21, 1955. The sale featured 72 animals, with 61 of them direct descendants of U of Ark Standard Majesty. “Majesty” was the sire of 61 of the 72 animals consigned to the sale.

Bruce Cameron, Ardachie Farm, Marton, New Zealand is the third generation to breed polled Jerseys. His grandfather, Jack Cameron began dairy farming in 1917. The Ardachie herd included about 25 cows. The polled gene was introduced in 1926 with the purchase of a grade polled heifer calf from a neighbor. The calf named “Poley” produced 14 calves including five polled heifers and one polled bull. The Archdachie herd is the longest established polled herd of any dairy breed in the world.

AYRSHIRE: Tom P. Whittaker, Brandon, Vermont established Greenrange Farm in the mid- 1940s. Tom developed a partnership with Burton Baker, of Baker Farm in Brandon, in the early 1940s, and from this partnership came some of the foundation

cattle for Greenrange Farm. He used the TeePee (Tom P.) prefix on his early cattle. From his work as a fieldman with the Ayrshire Association, Tom was aware of a group of polled breeders in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania that were actively selecting for the polled trait starting during the 1930s.

In 1945 Tom Whittaker went to Lancaster County where he purchased a young polled bull, Green Meadows Champion Sailor from Jacob Horst and eight polled heifers from Horst and other breeders in Lancaster County. “Sailor” was used on every animal in the Greenrange herd and became the breed’s first “Approved” polled sire. The Pennsylvania purchase included a polled bred heifer named Green Meadows Sadie also bred by Jacob Horst. While Tom Whittaker selected for the polled trait, he did not neglect functional type and production. Utility and practicality aimed at maximum labor efficiency was the philosophy at Greenrange Farm.

Naturally hornless Ayrshires were accumulated, but it was the development of good ‘business back ends’ (outstanding udders) that determined whether an animal fit into the Greenrange breeding program. Greenrange Farm quickly became established as primary source of polled genetics.

Dan Murphy, New York. About 1970, Dan Murphy developed a Selwood Betty’s Commander son named Senelakeca Betty Chad.

This bull sired daughters with type and production.” “Chad” went on to sire several Excellent daughters and at least one All-American after semen was distributed by the Ayrshire Breeders Association. Another greatly influential polled sire was Plum-Bottom Reward Lennon, born in 1998. For years, “Lennon” was the only polled Ayrshire available in commercial AI through Taurus.

Due to the limited availability until recent years, polled Ayrshire genetics usually trace their lineage back to the same small group of cattle at Greenrange Farm.

BROWN SWISS: Elmer Johnson, (19201998) Winchester, New Hampshire (Pleasant Valley Farms), bred Brown Swiss from 1942 until the 1990s. He appears to be the first Brown Swiss breeder to seriously select for the polled gene. In 1980 most of the animals in his 100-head herd were naturally polled.

Johnson mated closely related individuals to concentrate the polled gene. The 1980 Centennial Brown Swiss Bulletin issue, Elmer Johnson placed an ad stating, “The only farm in the world specializing in Naturally Polled Registered Brown Swiss. He had bred cattle since 1942. He offered semen from polled grandsons of “Bolero”, “Fran Folly” and “Tamarind”. Johnson bred some good cattle including Pleasant Valley PLD Jessie, a medium sized cow with a beautiful udder.

“Jessie” stood third at Eastern States Exposition (1990) and was best udder. “Jessie” was purchased by William Kelly III and was the the dam of “Jade Julie.”

Elmer Johnson was a New Hampshire state legislator representing Cheshire County and was a talented square dance caller. He was also a true New Hampshire Yankee farmer, with dry wit, quiet nature, ethic of hard work, and a “New Hampsha” Yankee accent.

John Rodecap, Trout Run, Brown Swiss, Decorah, IA. The Trout Run prefix is prominent on the listing of high ranking polled Brown Swiss bulls. Three Trout Run-bred bulls rank near the top, while the Number One bull, Double W Kade NP is sired by a Trout Run- bred bull. The second-ranking

by Trout- Run Dr. Jay-P-ET. Currently, six of seven polled bulls available through AI have a Trout-Run connection.

GUERNSEY: Interest in naturally polled Guernseys began later than in most other dairy breeds. A 1948 article in Capper’s Farmer magazine shows that among those who owned polled Guernseys at that time were William Fehrs, Pine County, Minnesota; Eldon Aldred, Huntington County, Indiana; T. T. Murdy, Appanoose County, Iowa; Wendell Warnemunde. Watonwan County, Minnesota; Royal Lawson, Grant County, Minnesota, and C. Lorraine Bruce, Cherokee County, Iowa. The editors of Capper’s Farmer asked readers to share their experiences with polled dairy cattle. A number of responses were received including one from T.T. Murdy in Iowa who wrote “Most Guernsey breeders kill polled calves.

They seem to think them a dishonor to their herds.” Mr. Murdy stated that he had been a Guernsey breeder since 1920. This comment

by Mr. Murdy provides a clue as to why polled animals are not more common in the Guernsey breed.

Angstman Guernsey Farm of Mora, MN (Kenneth W Angstman & Family) began to select for the polled trait in 1957. Their slogan was “Guernseys Don’t Have Horns Anymore” and they made the prediction “that in a few years all breeds would be polled.”

A polled cow bred by Angstman named Angstman Farm Duchess was advertised as “America’s Greatest Dairy Cow”. This cow was designated a Gold Star Dam by the American Guernsey Cattle Club completed a World Record. The July 1977 issue of the Guernsey Journal was a special anniversary issue. Angstman Guernsey Farm advertised some polled bulls for sale in a full-page ad.

Angstman had young bulls for sale that were sired by well-known registered Guernsey bulls.

Lloyd Frazier (Rougilla prefix), Bar Harbor, Maine was the most prominent breeder of polled Guernseys. Rougilla Farm was established in the early 1920s. Living on a small farm in the remote area of Maine, he bought most of his feed and was never able to adequately promote his cattle. He moved to Bar Harbor after World War II to sell bottled milk directly to local customers. He sold a bull or two to the AI stud, but they saw limited use.

Gordon Wilson, Campbellscroft, Ontario took an interest in the polled trait and in 1967, he travelled to Maine where he purchased a homozygous polled bull named Rougilla Willie Granada 574979 from Lloyd Frazier. “Willie Granada” proved to be a very good investment. He became Canada’s first bull meeting Star One program requirements and sired many high producing cattle.

Valleview Farm (Randy Boutwell), Kasota, MN. Nearly all of the polled Guernseys in the world can trace their origins to the Valleview Guernsey herd. Boutwell acquired foundation polled stock from Kenneth Angstmann and Lloyd Frazier. Almost single-handedly he has preserved the polled gene in the Guernsey breed.

Springhill Farm, (Chris Lang), Big Prairie, OH. The Springhill herd includes 200 milking Guernseys and Holsteins. Polled genetics have become an important part of the breeding program.

Seth Johnson, who was on the staff of the American Guernsey Cattle Club encouraged

Christopher Lang to use semen from Valleview TB Midas P and Valleview Polled Future PP on a few of the best Springhill Guernseys. This was before genomic testing was available and little was known about the bulls other than they were registered Guernseys and polled.

Several of the top females at Springhill were flushed and others were bred to polled bulls. The re- sults proved beyond expectations. Springhill Farm now has a large selection of polled females and plans are underway to expand the polled herd. (Note that Seth Johnson is the judge of the 2019 International Guernsey Show at World Dairy Expo).

MILKING SHORTHORN: William W. Crane (1832-1904) was a physician at Tippecanoe, Ohio. and a leading breeder of Polled Durham cattle. Starting in the late 1870s Dr. Crane bred pedigreed Shorthorn bulls to native “muley” (hornless) cows and developed a useful type of cattle possessing scale, feeding and milking qualities without horns. He was a prolific writer and published numerous newspaper articles promoting this idea.

He suggested that after about five crosses a desirable type of polled animal could be developed and depended upon to reproduce itself with consistency. Other breeders in Ohio, Indiana and Iowa were attracted to this idea and established programs along the suggested format. Since the cattle developed along these lines were not purebreds (called grades) they were referred to as Single Standard Polled Durhams.

Dr. Crane learned of a herd of naturally hornless purebred Shorthorns in Minnesota, owned by W. W. McNair of Minneapolis. They all descended through their sire or dam to the cow Oakwood Gwynne 4th (v15 p803 of the American Shorthorn Herd Book).

Dr. Crane purchased the entire McNair herd and since they were purebreds they became known as Double Standard Polled Durhams.

Today, a very high percentage of Milking Shorthorns are polled and many of these go back to Oakwood Gwynne.

Wilbur C. “Cliff” Wood (Woodside Farms), Pendleton, Indiana. Cliff Wood became the pioneer herd of Polled Milking Shorthorns in the U.S during the early 1900s. For a while Woodside was promoting polled stock in both branches of the breed. But the horned breeders in the beef type at that time didn’t have a great toleration for the polls. Talking one day to H. E. Tener and Willard S. Martin, both Milking Shorthorn breeders, Cliff relates in the December 1947 Milking Shorthorn Journal, that he remarked that he had no suitable place to show his hornless cattle. Tener and Martin said, “Come with us,” which is what he did. After that, Woodside was very much in the Milking Shorthorn fold. Polled, plenty of milk and good udders became a Woodside trademark. Note that Cliff Wood’s daughter Lillian married John O. Rowe of Innisfail Ranch, Davis, CA. Anthony “Tony” Joseph Majerus (19212005) was a leading breeder and promoter of polled Milking Shorthorns. Together with Rudy Griess, he owned the polled Meadowbrook Chieftain 9th (born September 1, 1966).

“Chieftain 9th was registered in the Milking Shorthorn Society as well as the American Shorthorn Association. He was what Shorthorn breeders called “native” stock with no outside blood introduced. His semen was sold in 43 states and three Canadian provinces during the 1970s, 80s and even into the #PolledPlace 7 1990s.

Kings Ville Jerseys - Rob & Kerrie Anderson - Australia Kings Ville Jerseys was established in 1987 and is owned and operated by Rob and Kerrie Anderson with daughters Emily, Meg and Holly. The farm of 320 grazing acres was purchased in September 2000 and is located at Drouin West, 90 minutes south east of Melbourne. The milking herd consists of 220 Registered Jerseys with 180 replacement heifers carried on farm.

Our introduction to Polled genetics was with the sire Fair Weather Opportunity and our first Polled heifer was born in 1992. Kings Ville Cowslip 3-P VG-85 was 2nd 2 years in milk Melbourne Royal Show in 1994. The Kings Ville Lassie 37 P uniqueness of this Polled cow made us take notice and we have continued to Junior Champion 2019 Int'l Dairy Week use Polled genetics when they suited L-R: Kerrie, Rob, Meg, Holly & Emily our breeding goals.

The Lassie family is our strongest Polled female line and Our ultimate the foundation sire that started this gene was Dutch Hollow goal is to breed a Berretta Option P. high ranking HoKings Ville Lassie 16 P EX-93 (Resurrection x Prodigy mozygous, Polled, x Option) was Champion Cow Melbourne Royal Show in A2/A2, plus DPR 2011 and has two EX-91 daughters in the herd today. Her sire. great-grand-daughter Kings Ville Lassie 37 P was Junior

Champion Heifer at IDW 2019.

Currently we have 45 Polled females on farm today and sires we have used with success are Eclipse, Dillan, Oliver.

Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene.

H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present.

Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present.

At least 50% of the offspring will be polled.

Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled.

Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present.

At least 50% of the offspring will be polled.

The very first World Dairy Expo issue of the #PolledPlace magazine was in 2014 with only 36 Homozygous Polled Bulls (Holstein & Jersey) included in the #PolledPlacings listings. Today, there are 79, YES 79 Homozygous Polled bulls to select from in several different breeds.
