The Past, Present and Future of Listowel-P the breed in the direction that the board of directors believes is in the best interest of the breed. It's simply more profitable to milk a cow that is healthy. In my opinion, Listowel-P initially gained excitement because he ranked pretty high, and he's Polled with a pedigree that wasn't the same as many other Polled animals. People dreamed of making that elusive high indexing PP. He's not your grandfather’s bull! Not the bull I would have picked when I was 20 either! Health traits are hard to get excited about because you can’t see them. He is positive for PTAT. He doesn't appear to be extreme for anything, however he is extremely negative for stature. At -2.1, he is one of the most negative for stature bulls in the breed. I have heard people saying for several years that the breed was getting too big. I have heard the experts present data telling us that smaller cows are more feed efficient and that they live longer. I have heard breeders complain about the purity of bulls, and I have heard breeders saying we need better Polled bulls. Well, here he is! Looking at his udder index and udder breakdowns, he is -2 on udder depth. My opinion is that his daughters have udders that are producing, and are in the right shape with the teats in the right place. For generations, there have been Jerseys that you would say had too much udder for a 2-yearold, but they stayed put, and as 4-year-olds, their udders were still there, almost unchanged. These were some of the most productive and long lived cows in the barn. Selection pressure using an udder index that puts a lot of weight on udder depth will not favor these individuals. Is he the bull for you? Well, that depends on your goals and your cows! If you want to make a National show champion, probably not. Do you want productive cows? Feed efficient cows? Healthy cows? Purebred cows? Polled cows? Then he's the bull for you! As feed efficiency becomes more and more important, I would argue that there will be continued downward pressure on the stature of our breed. So, to that point, of proven bulls that are negative for stature, Listowel-P is #1 for Milk, #1 for FM$, #1 for CM$, #1 for GM$, #1 for PL and #1 for SCS. There are 11 proven bulls in the breed that are both negative for stature and positive for PTAT. Listowel-P is one of them. Of negative stature bulls, Listowel-P is #1 for protein at 52#, the number 2 bull has 28#. It's not close. The Future It takes a lifetime to build these types of pedigrees and with the breeders and breed associations recording and documenting information, their history will be preserved. As Listowel-P is added to more and more pedigrees, he will have a bright future. Who knows, maybe someday he could be the first Polled bull in a long line of Polled dams that build the next great one, just like Belle Boy-P and Atlantis-P! Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. Homozygous Polled Females at Covington Jerseys It took a few years to get rolling, but we finally have some Homozygous Polled females to breed from. The first year we had potential PP calves, only two were PP - and both were bulls. The next year, we had two PP heifers and the number has been increasing since then.
