Breeder Perspectives on POLLED

This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to Dr. Tom Mercuro for sharing your Polled story and views on the future of Polled Holsteins!

Mercuro Farms, LLC - Dr. Tom Mercuro - Rocky Ridge, Maryland Farm Background Mercuro Farms, LLC is located just outside of Frederick, Maryland in the town of Rocky Ridge and is owned by Dr. Tom Mercuro. Katie Kearns is herd manager and critical to handling the herd. Jordan Eberly manages the farm and Amy Savage helps with marketing, registration and relationship with associate herds.

The main farm usually has 35 milking cows, 200 heifers and 40 dry and springing animals. We have an additional 130 milking at another farm. All of our milking animals are housed in freestalls, with a RHA of 28,733 M 3.8 % F 1106 lbs 3.2% P 919 lbs. Our relationship with associate herds creates opportunities to concentrate the top of the pyramid of our genetics at the home farm.

Holstein Association's Top Polled GTPI list including 8 in the top 25! Their sires include: Crimson, Renegade, Riveting, Dynamo, and Moola.

We also have some high ranking Polled females that go back to RC-LC Goldwyn ATM-EX-92. This includes our top GTPI Polled female, TTM Delson Almanac +2798 GTPI. She also has a high ranking sister sired by Luster-P. Their dam is a VG Rubicon x GP Jacey x VG-87 Facebook x ATM. Additionally, we have a Polled RC Progress who ranks in the top 60 GTPI and hails from the Norz-Hill Bench Winny EX-94 family. Her dam is a GP Denver x VG-86 Supersire x EX-92 Supersonic x EX-93 Goldwyn x EX-95 Juniper Outside Wish x EX-94 Formation x Bench Winny.

How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start?

We have had some Polled genetics for over 10 years.

The genomic era brought the ability to turn generations quickly with increased confidence. We saw an opportunity to accelerate Polled genetics to economically significant levels. Index levels come and go, but once Polled, always Polled.

What is your breeding philosophy for Polled?

No different than any other cattle. We are trying to breed extremely productive cattle with good health traits and efficient mature body size. We have also bred for A2A2 and a large percentage of our herd carries that gene combination.

Who was your first Polled cow?

Probably one of our first Polled animals was RMW Earnhart Alicia-ET GP-84. She was a daughter of RC-LC Goldwyn ATM-ET EX-92. She had a few Polled offspring, but we began to have more of an impact from TTM Josuper Ecstatic-ET VG-86 who is mentioned below.

What cow families are you breeding Polled into? What do you have for Polled animals?

Our main Polled family goes back to Pine-Tree Martha Sheen/Ammon-Peachy Shauna. We purchased SeagullBay Miss Eby-ET, an Earnhart from a Robust x Shauna. Miss Eby ended up scoring VG-85 and made over 48,000 M with over 1700F and 1500 P in 365d. Her best daughter is TTM Josuper Ecstatic VG-86, who just calved for the 3rd time and is the perfect commercial cow! Her offspring dominate the

What Polled bulls are represented in your herd?

The Polled bulls that are represented in our herd include: Limelight-P, AltaDelson-P, Chrome-P, Luster-P, Tendoy-P, and Progress-P. What Polled bulls are you currently using?

We will utilize the highest net merit Polled bulls. We would rather create Heterozygous Polled females from non Polled males that meet our breeding goals.

There are several Polled bulls that will hopefully be made available that should be used throughout the Holstein breed. Some of the Polled bulls we are currently using as mating sires include: Atomic PP, Frenzy-P, Edge-P and Monument-P. Additionally, we are using a high NM$ Polled bull of our own, Epitaxy.

What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls?

We need more bulls and access to the best ones to create a breed with enough Polled depth to meet future consumer demands.

What would you like to see available in the future and where do you see the future of Polled in your breed?

Cooperative efforts to market Polled semen, cattle and organized consumer pull through from demand. The public cannot ask for what they do not know is available.

Polled value will increase when there are enough cattle to market a premium priced consumer market. Show an urban mother one video of dehorning and she will buy Polled milk for life or she also may never buy milk, we need Polled dairy cattle.

To be included, they must have their own genotype; chip density is listed in the GT column. Cows must have calved within the past 27 months and not have a termination code associated with the current lactation.

Heifers must be no older than three years of age on January 7, 2020 and not have a GPTA based on lactation information.

Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene.

H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present.

Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present.

At least 50% of the offspring will be polled.

Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled.

Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present.

At least 50% of the offspring will be polled.
