FROM THE EDITOR elcome to the I-O’s Explore 2021.

While we are not quite out of the pandemic, there are signs of life

everywhere.

More and more people are getting vaccinated, which means that COVID cases should go down and business and activities can reopen or rebuild with fewer restrictions.

This year’s Explore magazine once again shows visitors — and long-time residents — what Polk County has to offer those looking

to spend a little time out of the house. We’ve noted changes in operations where necessary because that is still our reality.

We hope you take advantage of what you find in these pages — safely of course — because we all need to get out and “explore” and have fun.

This year, we have the return of Krazy Dayz and the Polk County Fair, we hope with very few COVID-19 restrictions by the time those summer event staples are set to occur.

But in the meantime, there are plenty of other outings to go on — from bird watching

Welcome to Dallas DALLAS IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS There are several notable additions to downtown that have opened since the beginning of the pandemic, adding variety to the shopping and eating choices in Dallas.

W

alk down the streets of downtown Dallas, and you might think that the pandemic spared this little town.

That isn’t to say that Dallas hasn’t suffered its fair share of struggles due to COVID-19. While the business landscape has changed, but it hasn’t been decimated.

There are several notable additions to downtown that have opened since the beginning of the pandemic, adding variety to the shopping and eating choices in Dallas.

Two prominent, and formerly vacant corners, have been filled by new businesses.

At the corner of Main and Mill streets used to be Pressed, a gathering place where people could enjoy a cup of coffee, live music, a game of trivia and the company of others. Sadly, a victim of the pandemic, Pressed closed in

December 2020.

In early May, the space was given new life when New Morning Bakery opened its doors at 788 Main St. This is the second location for the bakery, originally from Corvallis. Serving more than baked goods, it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you can stop in whenever your appetite prompts you Just a block away is The Blue Lady at 904 S. Main St., which is also home to an expanding business.

Kevin and Krista Conzo, operators of Kevin’s Daily Bread, a home-based business that made and delivered home-baked goods to eager — and numerous — customers recently decided to open a brick-and-mortar location in downtown Dallas.

On the menu this time are favorite family recipes Kevin has perfected over time. This all began when the Conzo’s started a private Facebook group, Kevin’s cousins, to sell their bread. Krista designed a “blue lady” carrying bread to let them know where to go for comments and place their orders.

“So, when we were thinking about opening up this place, we wanted people to know we had other things besides bread. So, we’re calling it Kevin’s Daily Bread — Blue Lady,” Conzo explained The menu will feature everything he loved from the East Coast.

“Everything I’ve stuffed my face with the last 35 years,” Conzo elaborated. “My wife has a particular palate. In the Pacific Northwest they like spicy. But I’m not used to that. Back East, it’s more savory. So, we’re trying to spice up our sauces a little bit more with garlic and stuff like that.”

If you enjoy a glass of wine, you can explore some of the best the Willamette Valley has to offer in one place at Radius Tasting Room on Mill Street. Radius carries wines from in and around Dallas, and often has winemakers visit for tastings.

If you have a craving to be outside, Dallas has you covered there, too, with a system of parks

next to the Dallas Aquatic Center on Southeast LaCreole Drive. It consists of soccer fields, a baseball field, a skate park, two tennis courts and a picnic area.

Birch Park — Intersection of Birch and Stump streets. New playground equipment recently was added, and the park also has two basketball hoops.

Gala Park — Intersection of Uglow Avenue and Hankel Street. It features a basketball court, playground and a grassy area with a gazebo.

Kingsborough Park — 101 SW Wyatt St. It features lots of wide-open spaces as well as two basketball hoops, walking paths and a playground. Restrooms are open during the summer.

Rotary Park — 300 NE Fern Ave. The city has joined forces with the Dallas Rotary Club to upgrade the park with new playground equipment, walking paths and a basketball court.

Walnut Park — 501 SE Walnut Ave. It is a small wooded area with a shaded creek and a bench.

2 — Radius Tasting Room: Check out wines from the Dallas area in one place, and even meet the winemaker during special tasting events.

3 — Rickreall Creek Trail System: The trail follows Rickreall Creek, flowing through the middle of the city. While not yet finished — the goal is to have the system span the city east to west — the completed sections offer beautiful views.

W

hen City Manager AJ Foscoli drove into Falls City for the first time, a few things were evident right away.

“As a former logging town, Falls City’s nostalgic charm was in evidence right away, Foscoli said. “Falls City’s different sections have their own identities for a small town, and the people are some of the friendliest I have ever met.”

Foscoli is fairly new on the job, taking over as the top administrator in December of 2020.

But as the former economic development director for the nearby city of Dallas, he’s familiar with the area, and the destinations Falls City has to offer.

He said one of his favorite activities strolling around town, taking in the sights of the many century-old homes. With a 119-stair staircase that connecting the main thoroughfare North Main Street with Prospect Street near Falls

City Elementary School, Falls City is a walking-friendly town.

There’s plenty to do along you stroll. Falls City is famous for it’s namesake falls on the Little Luckiamute River. People swim — or even jump off the cliffs surrounding the falls into the deep pools below — at a city park along the Little Luckiamute. Dining options are nearby with The Bread Board, not temporarily closed due to COVID-19 and The Boondocks restaurant.

Foscoli enjoys taking it all in while, “chatting with locals, swimming in the Little Luckiamute River, grabbing a steak on Fridays at The Boondocks, and soon, jumping the 40-foot at the waterfalls,” he said.

Up for a scenic drive to a wondrous destination? Pack a hearty supply of food, and maybe a spare tire, and head up the logging road toward the old town of Valsetz. Follow the signs that say Valley of the Giants, or VOG, to find a preserve that features ancient Douglas firs, some between 400 and 450 years old. Or, if you would rather not risk getting lost, you could check out The Boondocks Facebook page to hop on a guided tour.

COVID-19 has caused strain on Falls City, as it has everywhere else, but Foscoli said the resilient little town has taken it in stride.

“Overall folks have helped each other out to mitigate the effects of the closures,” he said.

Foscoli said visitors should watch for a reopening date at The Bread Board and for information regarding the city’s 2022 Pride Festival.

“We look forward to welcoming Polk County folks to Falls City to enjoy its many amenities when it is safe to do so,” Foscoli said.

Spirit Mountain Casino may be the unincorporated community of Grand Ronde’s — and Oregon’s — most popular tourist destination since it is situated along a well-traveled route to the coast, but there’s plenty more to Grand Ronde than meets the eye.

Grand Ronde has a long and storied history.

Tribal ancestors lived throughout the Willamette Valley, southern Oregon and the Oregon coast since time immemorial. They were moved to the Grand Ronde Reservation beginning in the 1850s after ceding most of what is now western Oregon to the federal government in seven ratified treaties. Remnants of the U.S. Army post that controlled access to and from the Grand Ronde Reservation now overlook the Tribe’s picturesque uyxat Powwow Grounds off Highway 22 (Hebo Road) at Fort Yamhill State Park.

Federal recognition was stripped from the Tribe and it was terminated in 1954, but the Grand Ronde Tribe, through the hard work of Tribal members, friends and community allies,

saw the Tribe restored to federal recognition on Nov. 22, 1983.

Today, the tribe’s reservation and land holdings total more than 12,000 acres and range from Rattlesnake Butte near Junction City to Kilchis Point on Tillamook Bay. However, the main reservation is situated in forestland just north of the Grand Ronde area.

Though closed temporarily due to COVID-19, the tribe’s story is on display in the Chachalu Tribal Museum & Cultural Center, 8720 Grand Ronde Road, which opened in 2014. The center features an exhibit detailing the Tribe’s history and created a place to archive cultural artifacts.

A second phase of construction created a large, permanent exhibition display space, work rooms for curating public exhibits, artifact processing, long-term storage for cultural archives and work rooms for Tribal research.

The name Chachalu means “the place of burnt timber,” in honor of what members of the Tualatin-Kalapuya Tribe named part of the See PAGE 18

The museum’s logo features a camas lily, a plant known for regenerating after forest fires — a symbol for the Tribe’s restoration after being “burnt” through placement on the reservation and termination.

Grand Ronde is also where you can find the aforementioned 108-acre Fort Yamhill State Heritage Area, operated by Oregon State Parks.

Nearby is achaf-hammi, a traditional Pacific Northwest plankhouse built by the Tribe in 2010.

Also located in Grand Ronde is the stunning West Valley Veterans Memorial dedicated to those from the West Valley area who have served their country in the military. The four black granite pillars represent the major branches of the U.S. armed forces and have more than 2,360 names etched into them. here’s a lot of activity in downtown Independence.

The city began reinventing itself in the early 2000s, trying to turn what many saw as a rough-around-the-edges burg into something special.

It worked. Stroll down Main Street on a summer weekend, and you’ll see why this former river port is increasingly a draw for people in the Willamette Valley who want to get away without traveling too far.

Most of the fun begins with Riverview Park, the town’s “living room.” The amphitheater, built in 2006, is packed with people for free movies and concerts all summer. On the Fourth of July, people pour into the park for arguably the best view of fireworks to be found

in the valley.

The 75-room boutique hotel on the Willamette River, The Independence, is welcoming visitors.

Its design embraces the river, The Independence Amphitheater and Riverview Park, the walkable downtown and nearby wineries.

New businesses are filling vacant storefronts and new apartments are in the works.

Osprey Point, a mixed-use commercial and residential facility, also in Independence Landing, is in development as well.

There are only so many towns on the river that have the kind of amenities Independence does, Irvine said.

Independence was founded in 1845 and incorporated in 1874. Historic architecture abounds in the downtown area, and local businesses and developers have worked hard to preserve it.

Each year, local resident and “parahistorian” Marilyn Morton leads guests on a Ghost Walk, spinning yarns about spectral sightings.

The town offers two farmers markets each summer, a smashing Fourth of July party (when COVID-19 allows), concerts and movies.

Independence has one of highest percentages of Latinos in Oregon, and as such, features a number of Mexican restaurants and shops, as well as a vibrant and well-attended Community Fiesta.

The Independence State Airport and its adjacent airpark neighborhood are among the notable features on the north side of town.

This subdivision is a community of pilots.

Streets are intermingled with runways. Having the airpark means antique aircraft fly-ins, hot air balloon launches, programs for would-be youth aircraft mechanics and pilots, including

John Pfaff Park — John Pfaff Park originally was known as Northgate Park and is located at the intersection of Hoffman and Gun Club roads. It has a playground, basketball court and picnic tables.

Mountain Fir Park — Mountain Fir Park is located off F Street between Seventh and Ninth streets. The land was formerly part of the Mountain Fir Lumber Mill but was donated to the city when the mill downsized in the early 1990s. It has picnic tables and lots of open spaces. The city has partnered with the Luckiamute Watershed Council to restore the South Fork of Ash Creek, home to salmon and trout. Polk County OSU Master Gardeners maintain a demonstration garden here, called Inspiration Garden.

Pioneer Park — Pioneer Park is located at the corner of Seventh and C streets. It has picnic tables, a playground and lots of tall, mature trees.

Dog Park — Located on Grand Street, east of Highway 51, about a quarter mile north of downtown. It is the only off-leash park in Independence, and was built through volunteer efforts.

Bicycle Boater Campground — This basic camping area has five sites, each with a picnic table and bike rack.

onmouth retains its small-town charm, though it is home to a university and several new commercial and residential developments.

The city is known for its 162-year bond with Western Oregon University, and has much in the way of community events for all residents and visitors.

Among the benefits Western Oregon University offers Monmouth residents and visitors is access to cultural activities, when COVID-19 protocols allow.

“It’s a small-town lifestyle but the Smith Fine Arts (at WOU) is pretty amazing,” said Suzanne Dufner, community development director. “You get this intimate concert environment, yet there are world-class musicians.”

And the historic downtown is definitely something people should explore, she said.

There are fun shops and a number of really good restaurants.

Its park system also is a source of pride.

It features 10 pristinely manicured large and “pocket” parks. An amphitheater was recently completed in Main Street Park, along with new facilities and a recycling system for the splash fountain, which is a draw for kids — and their guardians — on hot summer days.

“We also saw the exciting completion of a new mixed-use building in our downtown at the old Nelson’s Gas Station,” Dufner said.

“The development includes two new commercial office spaces and two upper floor apartment units. We’re also looking forward to the opening of Dry Town Tap Station and a new food cart pod.”

Monmouth has long been considered a bedroom community, with the majority of residents working in nearby Salem or Corvallis, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t open for business.

More and more, lights are on into the evening hours with pubs and restaurants attracting students, Western professors and residents alike.

Recent efforts to define Monmouth’s vision, Monmouth Engaged, revealed the importance of trails. This has led to increased efforts to improve access and safety for cyclists and pedestrians in the town.

The town also plays host to many cycling events, from Cycle Oregon to Bike MS. With the rise in bicyclists, the bike and pedestrian committee applied for and received a grant to install two bike-repair stations in the city.

If it is a go in 2021, the town’s Fourth of July festivities are not to be missed.

n rural Polk County, Western Oregon University serves as a bustling academic and cultural center.

WOU, the oldest public university in Oregon, has traditionally been known as a leader in training teachers. The College of Education has earned numerous national awards and recognition. For the past couple of decades, WOU has flourished as a liberal arts institution with popular majors of business, criminal justice, and psychology. WOU also hosts a satellite campus for Oregon Health and Science University’s nursing program. The Research Institute has been a part of WOU since 1989 and leads research in education, human services and health.

WOU also provides a variety of programs to support first-generation and low-income students on their path to graduation like the Student Enrichment Program. DALLAS CITY PARK, ARBORETUM OFFERS OUTDOOR RECREATION

T

his year especially, time to relax and walk off the stress of a pandemic-influenced life is vital. Tucked away in Dallas City Park is a place the combines history and nature that is the perfect place to take your mind to a better place.

The Delbert Hunter Arboretum is dedicated to the appreciation of Oregon’s native trees, shrubs and wildflowers.

Arboretum volunteers are so committed to that mission that they’ve experimented with practices used by the region’s Native American tribes to restore ecosystems. With the help of the Dallas Fire Department, volunteers burn portions of the meadow section planted with native bunch grasses. In previous centuries, tribes used annual fires as a regeneration tool in places in the Willamette Valley.

Visitors can reach the arboretum by traveling through Dallas City Park via the Levens Street entrance or, more directly, via West Ellendale Avenue, then Westwood Drive and Park Street.

Looking for something at little more active?

The park is home to an 18-hole disc golf course that’s popular with casual players and tournament organizers.

The course opened in 2009, and since has become one of the park’s major draws.

Disc golf is more than throwing a Frisbee around — even though it may look that easy. As in traditional golf, control of aim and distance is required. Dallas’ course offers ample opportunity to sharpen your skills in a fun environment.

Most holes are short. Instead of distance

posing a challenge, hazards make this course unique.

Whether weaving your way through trees or avoiding drifting into the creek, the course offers several holes that make even “pro” players stop and think.

No tee times are necessary. Unless there’s a tournament taking place, you can walk on and take all the time you need.

Just need to let the kids run around or walk the dog? The city’s largest park has all the mainstays to keep families entertained for hours. Multiple playgrounds offer slides, seesaws, merry-go-rounds and more.

During the summer months, it’s common to see families playing in Rickreall Creek, which weaves its way through the park.

or Mary Sober and Justin Kline, it was a daunting proposition pursuing their dream of starting up a new restaurant during a pandemic that was limiting in-person dining.

Undeterred, the married couple with three kids jumped at the perfect opportunity to take over Dandy Burger last October.

“It’s been great so far. I’ve been blown away,” said Sober of the drive through burger joint on Monmouth Cutoff Road in Dallas.

“I was a little hesitant going in, but I’m amazed how busy it is, by the support we’ve got and how friendly everybody is.”

Sober and Kline had talked a lot about wanting to own a small business.

“We both used to work at a small fish and chips restaurant, so we liked the small business,” Sober said. “We wanted to do something on our own time, something that’s a little flexible that works good for us and our three kids.”

She said previous owner, Otis Pettit, after five years running Dandy Burger, was done, ready to move on to work on race cars. Taking

over with an established menu and customer base was the perfect scenario.

“I guess that was kind of my thing,” the 27-year-old former stay-at-home mom said.

“I didn’t want to step up on my own and start 100% from scratch. Being able to step into something that was already established was perfect and what I was wanting. His menu is great, the food was great and his customers are great.”

So far, it’s a solo operation with a space small enough for Sober to take orders and man the grill by herself.

“Some days it gets a little crazy where I’m running around like a chicken with its head cut off,” she admitted.

On the busiest days there can be up to five cars in line on both sides of the drive through lanes. And she gets quite a few walkups, explaining that all the surrounding businesses have employees who come over and eat.

Among her menu of fast-food staples, the double cheeseburger remains the most popular item.

“People have big appetites, I guess,” she

said.

Even with an established menu of favorites, Sober said they’re looking to add to it.

“We’re actually working on a breakfast menu,” she said. “So fingers crossed, we’re shooting for spring-break time coming out with a breakfast menu of biscuits and gravy and breakfast sandwiches.”

In addition, she and her husband are working on increasing their presence on social media.

“We’ve started up a Facebook page, but the computer stuff remains my weakness. I’d rather be here and talk to people,” she said.

Daryll’s offers the unusual

DALLAS-AREA NURSERY SPECIALIZES IN RAISING ITS OWN PLANTS

I

f you are looking to plant something in your garden that will catch the eye of guests and neighbors, you don’t have to search online for unique flora.

Daryll’s Nursery, 15770 Ellendale Road, Dallas, may have just what you are looking for, all in no more than a drive just outside the Dallas city limits.

Daryll’s has the unusual in stock, from aptly named dinosaur food plants — they have leaves that grow to 6 feet across — to several varieties of bamboo. Both are displayed in the landscaping at the nursery, so you’ll get an idea of what they will look like in your yard.

Owner Daryll Combs has plenty of dinosaur food, otherwise known as gunnera plants, in stock. They are a sight to behold.

Another Daryll’s specialty is bamboo, including the nursery’s most popular variety, black bamboo. They begin producing their yearly new growth in the late spring.

“Which is pretty exciting,” Combs said. “The new grow is bigger around and taller than the one before.”

With the black bamboo, it takes a few years before the bark turns its signature color.

“The first year is green; the second it’s spotty golden; and the third year the bark turns black,” Combs said.

Daryll’s is newbie friendly, too. Combs said people don’t have to feel intimidated about trying out new plants for the first time. He provides detailed growing instructions for the uninitiated.

Combs said he propagates most of what he sells at the nursery, so he has first-hand experience with most plants, and that knowledge he passes on to his customer via the signs.

All plants have detailed signs that Combs encourages people to take pictures of for future reference.

“I spend a lot of time doing this,” he said.

If you haven’t been to Daryll’s in awhile, you’ll see a new “house” at the nursery.

“We call it our small house,” Combs said.

“Everything in here is smaller in size than the bigger plants. A lot of them we have in bigger sizes, but we give the public a chance to buy something at quite a savings in a smaller pot, but still get a really good quality plant.”

You may also run into a few signs of a different sort. They say a selection of plants aren’t ready for sale yet. That is another effort on Combs’ part to make sure his customers have success with the plants they buy from him. He waits until a plant’s roots are fully established in the pot before offering them to customers.

“We don’t really want to sell anything before it’s time,” he said.

In a finishing touch, Combs sells his own mix of potting soil.

“We have regular customers that buy that, that come every year,” Combs said. “We get a couple of them in the spring that can’t wait. If it’s too wet, we don’t mix it.”

The mix contains black compost, pumice and fine bark. The trick may in the formula, Combs said.

“It’s not the kind of soil, you know the packaged soil in stores. You pick it up and it’s really light. This is heavy,” he said. “We call it Daryll’s Planting Mix. We used to label every bag, but we don’t even label it anymore. People know what they are getting.”

POLK COUNTY HAS THREE GOLFING OPTIONS

T

he Center for Disease Control has updated its COVID safety guidelines, saying it’s safe to return to great outdoors without a mask. So now is the perfect time to return to the links to recapture your golf swing. Even if you’re still concerned about maintaining your socially-distanced safe space as the pandemic winds down, golf offers the perfect non-contact sport.

And if you’ve never played golf before, now is the time to start as the weather warms and transitions from spring to summer.

Polk County boasts three golf courses: Oak Knoll near Independence, the Dallas Golf Club and Cross Creek Golf Course, also located in Dallas.

Oak Knoll, opened in 1926 as the first golf course in the Willamette Valley, measures 6,208 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 113 and a 68.6 United States Golf Association rating. The course features three sets of tees for different skill levels, and is home base for the Central High School Panthers golf team.

Oak Knoll offers a full, 18-hole course, an enclosed driving range, a complete proshop,

both chipping and putting areas, private and group lessons, tournaments and a restaurant and lounge.

Cross Creek, opened in 1998 and was awarded first place in the Willamette Valley for 2012 and 2013 by nwgolfguys.com. Cross Creek is another 18-hole golf course, located 13 miles west of Salem on Highway 22. Known for its challenging layout, Cross Creek has 6,900 yards of playing surface, from fairways to greens. It is also home to the Dallas High School Dragons golf team.

The course offers group or solo lessons and has carts and clubs to rent year round.

Dallas Golf Club is a 2,250 yard, 9-hole executive golf course with five par threes and four par fours.

The course has challenges enough for serious golfers, but is accessible for newbies, too. The Dallas Golf Club offers Men’s Club Play on Thursdays and Saturdays in Gross and Net Divisions.

The library that time forgot

GRAND RONDE LIBRARY IS A TINY PIECE OF HISTORY

melie Redman drives 6.7 miles every Monday from her home in Willamina to open the Grand Ronde Library at noon.

Sometimes people actually come in during its three-hour open window to pick up or drop off books. Redman never expects them, but she said she’s always happy to see them.

If they do check out a book, they don’t need a library card.

All they need to do is write their name and address in a spiral notebook.

“We’re not what you would call really strict about paperwork around here,” Redman said.

It is, in fact, the same spiral notebook Harriett House used to check out the very first book — on Oct. 15, 1958, to be precise. And the notebook is far from full. Another 60 years or so, and some future librarian might need to buy a new notebook.

Redman said she’s fine for now.

The library has no connection to the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Members of the Grand Ronde Women’s Club started the library in the small building that once housed the Bank of Grand Ronde.

Elsie Werth, another Willamina resident, served as the librarian until about 2013.

Although Monday afternoons can be a mite lonely, Redman said she couldn’t bear the thought of no one being there to tend the books.

“I’m keeping the spirit of the Grand Ronde Women’s Club alive,” said Redman, 78.

Sarah Frost, the manager of the nearby Willamina Public Library, said it warms her heart to see Redman and the Women’s Club soldiering forth at a time when so many forces seem

allied against books, libraries and reading.

“Having the library in Grand Ronde is so important for their community and ours,” said Frost.

The library offers few amenities. There are no computers, no guest authors, no gift shops.

Redman said the library does offer electricity — just no heating other than an old black cast-iron stove.

“Unlike others, we’re the true meaning of conservative,” Redman said.

Although the library technically closes at 4 p.m., she said closing time is really up for grabs.

“I stay open as long as there are people here,” Redman said. “I don’t like turning people away. There’s this one elderly lady who has trouble getting here. I’m not going to shuffle her out the door.”

The library is also open by appointment.

Making one, however, can be tricky. Not only does the library not have a computer, it also doesn’t have a phone number. T here’s also no website, email address or Facebook page.

People who want appointments generally have to take the time to write a note and leave it on the door. Redman said she likes the fact that people are forced to write.

“We’re trying to promote literacy here,” she said.

The library’s original books came primarily from Women’s Club members. Other books have just been donated over the years.

The club continues to meet at the library.

“We have three members,” Redman said.

Grand Ronde has more than one library.

The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde operate a tribal library at its education center,

just down the road. It more closely resembles a regular public library, featuring expanded hours and all the latest technology.

The tiny library at 8559 Grand Ronde Road is out of date even by 1958 standards. The Dewey Decimal System is something that happened to other people. Books are stacked every which way, however they can be wedged in. They even cover the front right window.

The tiny library offers some perspective on the chaotic state the world finds itself in during a pandemic.

Redman notes that chaos is nothing new.

One of the things she loves about being surrounded by books is that they serve as a constant reminder that human nature never truly changes.

“I look back at all the old books, stories of people yelling and screaming at one another,” Redman said. “It’s still the same. I’m surprised how the wheel of time spins around to the same spot.”

A lifetime of reading has led Redman to her own theory of human psychology.

“It’s my A.B. Theory,” she said. “You can be an angel, or you can be a butthead. It’s your choice.”

When people are in Redman’s library, they should choose wisely, “I don’t mind calling people buttheads when they’re acting like buttheads,” she said.

Local wine makes national splash

DALLAS RESIDENT SAM PARRA FEATURED IN FORBES, WINE BUSINESS

W

inemaker Sam Parra, of Dallas, prefers to make wine out of grape varietals that seem like that they wouldn’t grow well in Oregon.

His sense of winemaking adventure has paid off. Parra and his wines have been featured in Forbes Magazine and among Wine Business’ “Hot Brands 2020” for his 2017 tempranillo.

Parra said the coverage has really helped his start up business, despite the pandemic.

“Last year was just one blessing after another as far as media presence,” Parra said.

He released his first commercial wines in 2019 after buying a home in Dallas in 2017. In addition to tempranillo, he works with albarino, and viognier, varietals that are less common in the Pacific Northwest because he didn’t want to compete with many accomplished makers of pinot noir in the Willamette Valley.

His pride and joy tempranillo is made from a varietal that typically grows in much warmer climates than the Willamette Valley has to offer.

“This is grown in really hot areas, like California, Texas, Southern Oregon, Spain,” Parra said. “But in this case, here in the valley, this is a cool-climate tempranillo.”

Parra’s take on the varietal is “velvety smooth” at the end. He jokingly says that if his tempranillo was a song, it would be Sade’s

“Smooth Operator.”

He said it appeals to Oregon pinot noir fans for its delicate smoothness.

“I would tell the critics and the wine reviewers that I felt that winemakers around here are making tempranillo with a technique like

Parra not only makes noteworthy wines, but he is a one-man show in marketing, public relations, and even delivery of his wine. it was pinot,” Parra said. “And what separates mine is just winemaking techniques that I learned in California or by asking questions in travels to Spain in the past.”

On Friday, Parra’s wines were showcased at Radius Tasting Room in Dallas, where he poured and talked about his creations with guests. He started the tasting with his albarino, viognier and rose.

He finished strong with his much-lauded tempranillo. The tempranillo grapes were

grown at Zenith Vineyard in West Salem and produced at a custom crush facility. Parra buys all of his grapes from vineyards in the valley, some who don’t mind being recognized and others who prefer to remain anonymous.

A new winemaker on the scene, Parra’s production is growing. In 2018, he produced 125 cases of wine. In 2019, he made 175 cases.

In 2020, that number jumped to about 500 cases.

Parra not only makes noteworthy wines, but he is a one-man show in marketing, public relations, and even delivery of his wine.

“All around the state. Here’s my little poor car,” Parra said, pointing to his well-used Hyundai. “It has, like a 175,000- some miles on it.”

He’s active on Facebook and Instagram, on which he posts local tastings and locations that carry his wines. He said the biggest key to his success is networking and a background in wine sales that helped him get started.

“I have a base clientele that I can call and sell to,” Parra said. “That’s really helped me out to sell my wine direct, versus opening up a bunch of wine and breaking it down into different samples and taking it to different restaurants and wine shops. I got more creative and started to call my contacts. The old-fashioned way, pick up the phone and talk to people.”

And it’s not just families who drop by. Every-

one from kids learning to putt for the first time to a group of friends looking to settle a score can be seen on any given day.

“We had a group of high school kids come out here for their prom,” Klinsky said. “They took a photo and played the course all dressed in their formal wear.”

At only $3 per person, this is an affordable activity the entire family can experience together.

hen you first arrive at Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge and step out of your car, the first thing you notice is how quiet it is. A quiet and sense of calm stretching along the three-mile trail system which winds through the 2,492 acres of the refuge.

Possibly this is because the refuge does not allow dogs, or activities like running, biking, hunting or fishing. Or it could be the fact that this place, established originally in 1965 to provide winter habitat for dusky Canada geese, stretches along Highway 22 with expansive, breathtaking views of the Willamette Valley. On the crest of one of the rolling hills, you can turn and look down at it all. The view is particularly striking

when the leaves are turning and collecting in heaps on the ground, and the horizon is covered in vivid purples and ambers and browns.

But Baskett Slough offers much more than scenery and a fun afternoon hike. It is a bird lover’s paradise, with over 230 species of birds making a home there, including songbirds, raptors, shorebirds and waterfowl. Animal lovers can also seek out 30 species of mammals, eight species of amphibians and 10 species of reptiles.

Included are over 10 different species of federally listed threatened and endangered species of plants and wildlife — one of which being the Fender’s Blue Butterfly, a species thought to be extinct until the 1980s.

A

global pandemic unleashed by Mother Nature couldn’t dissuade outdoor enthusiasts from riding the trails of the Black Rock Mountain Bike Area outside Falls City.

Even her second attempt to lock them out of the forest by sending an ice and windstorm through the region was only a temporary setback for these hardy action junkies.

About 40 volunteers hit the trails in March to clear the smaller debris left by the February 2021 ice storm that toppled trees and damaged many of the park’s man-made trail features.

Dan Shell, vice president of Black Rock Mountain Bike Association, was succinct on the state of Black Rock.

“It’s like a storm happened in a forest,” he said.

With the help of volunteers and assistance from the Oregon Department of Forestry, the trail system — with a few exceptions — has reopened.

“We are extremely fortunate to work with the great people at the Oregon Department of Forestry, and for the opportunity to have such killer trails in such a beautiful place,” read message on the Black Rock website.

The picture wasn’t so rosy back in March, about a month after the ice storm swept through the area. Shell said then that the system would require a lot of work.

“It’s not just about trail features hit by trees.

There’s also rot going on,” he said. “We’re dealing with features that have been sitting in the forest for 10 years and they’re made out of See PAGE 50

Black Rock had been a destination for dirt bikes during the 1980s until the Oregon Department of Forestry closed it to motor vehicles. In 2002, a trio of people approached the ODF about building a sanctioned free-ride trail.

By 2010, BRMBA became an international destination for mountain bikers of all experience levels and the International Mountain Bike Association added BRMBA to its Epic Trail Program — a distinction given to trails based on quality of design, organization behind projects and cooperation with public agencies.

Black Rock announced its reopening on April 15, noting there were still some closures and future maintenance to be done.

“In the near future, the trails will close again and small logging operation will commence and keep the trails closed for another short period of time,” read a post on BRMBA’s Facebook page. “More details will be released soon as possible. Enjoy the trails while you can and be safe out there.

fter on-again, off-again closures due to COVID-19, the Dallas Aquatic Center has reopened for recreational swimming.

“During rec swim, the fountain’s on, the slide is on, the diving board is open,” DAC Manager Gretchen Noll said. “We always have one lap lane available for use.”

The center has five pools, a leisure pool with a fountain and lazy river; a therapy pool; lap pool with the center’s 14-foot high, 105-foot long slide, a wading pool for little ones; and spa.

“We’re an aquatic center, not just a pool,” Noll said.

Now you can dive back into recreation swims at the Dallas Aquatic Center.

The Dallas Aquatic Center (DAC) resumed recreation swims on May 15.

DAC will operate these swims in accordance with Oregon Health Authority (OHA) guidance. OHA requires masks in the facility until entering the pool and that all parties maintain a 6-foot physical distance from other parties.

Patrons will be required to register online prior to the swim due to limited capacity.

To sign up for a swim, go to www.ci.dallas. or.us to sign up for time in the pool you would like to use.

For recreation swims, there is also an onlone sign up.

Use of the slide, diving board, and rope swing will be available during recreation swims.

Swimmers can expect to be given a colored wrist band or colored pin to wear during their

swim for the physical distancing monitor to ensure proper physical distancing.

Focal Point draws from afar

DALLAS BUSINESS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL CAMERA SHOP

T

here’s one place in Dallas that attracts people from as far away as Seattle.

Focal Point Photography, located at 161 W. Ellendale Ave. in Dallas isn’t your typical camera store.

“We see ourselves as a small town camera store, one that you can get the service you expect from a small locally owned shop, but with the vision and equipment of a store you’d find in a big city,” said Nate Woods, owner of Focal Point. “We have more gear than any store south of Portland, so we get people that drive as much as two hours to see us every day. We even have regular customers as far away as Bend and Seattle.”

Focal Point started up in 1983 and was owned by Mike Lowery until he retired and sold the business to Woods in 2019.

“I started working at Focal Point while I was in college at Chemeketa, in 2011,” Woods said.

“I came in the shop as a customer and got to know Mike … really well. He thought I’d be a

good fit so he offered me a job.”

Woods became interested in photography during high school.

“I went on a few mission trips to Central America and that’s where I got my first experience with a real SLR camera,” he said. “I spent a lot of the trips taking pictures and documenting everything I saw.”

He was hooked on it from that point on.

“Photography for me is being able to capture one exact moment in time that will never be seen again. It’s especially rewarding to take photos of those important moments in someone’s life, like their engagement, wedding, or new baby,” he said. “I love seeing my friends post photos that I took that are still being enjoyed years later.”

“That website helped us a lot while things were slow,” Woods said.

If you’re interested in photography, but don’t know where to start, Woods recommends purchasing used gear.

“Shopping used is the best way to get into

photography for a fraction of the price of new,” he said. “At Focal Point we have used DSLR setups starting around $150. Once you have a good camera just start taking pictures and experimenting. Find photos you love and try to recreate them yourself. You can find all kinds of videos and classes online, but you can also stop by the shop and ask questions any time, or join one of the many camera clubs in the area.”

The shop now has a sales website, shop. focalpointphoto.com, that was launched last year. The website features cameras and lenses for sale, used gear, camera bags, accessories such as tripods and chargers, film, drones and gift cards.

“That website helped us a lot while things were slow,” Woods said.

Focal Point sells, buys and trades camera gear, video equipment and drones. The shop also supplies camera and lens rentals, film developing, photo printing and VHS conversion to digital.

uckiamute State Natural Area, nestled on the border of Polk and Benton Counties, is a nature-lover’s haven, whether you enjoy jogging down the largest remaining remnant of bottomland cotton-maple-ash gallery forest, scouting for the several different species of birds the area is home to, or simply want to find a spot to sit down and look out on the Willamette River — the 315 square miles of riparian wilderness has it all.

This time of year is especially beautiful, with the leaves changing into bright colors.

However, any time of year you visit this quiet, tucked-away slice of nature is a delight. It can get muddy, so make sure to wear proper footwear.

As you meander through the winding trails, you’ll be welcomed along your walk or run by native shrubs, flowers and trees, most of which have been planted by volunteers, working to repair the habitat to its natural state. Others

have a history of growing in the area long before settlers came, such as purple camas.

Birds such as hummingbirds, red-breasted sapsuckers, white-crown sparrows and a redtail hawk can be seen in this area, depending on the time of year. Nesting wood duck, ruffled grouse, Western screech-owl, five woodpecker species, as well as red-eyed vireos and bandtailed pigeon populations can be found here.

Several grassland species of birds, such as Oregon vesper sparrow and streaked horn larks, both of which are declining in number, can also be seen nesting here.

Another sensitive species here is the Western Pond Turtle, in decline due to its habitat loss.

The loop from the northern trailhead is about two miles, but additional trails connect with it, taking hikers and joggers to the confluence of three rivers, where the Santiam and the Luckiamute meet the Willamette.

Where: Luckiamute State Natural Area is located at the southeastern edge of Polk County, bordered by Buena Vista Road and the Willamette River. The paddlers’ access parking lot is located just north of the Crocker Road intersection on the west side of Buena Vista Road. The south tract trail is located on the east side of Buena Vista Road just north of the junction with Northwest Springhill Drive.

Walking among giants

WALKING UNDER CENTURIES-OLD TREES IS A HUMBLING EXPERIENCE

T

he Valley of the Giants, a 51-acre site of old-growth forest, is home to some of the largest Douglas firs and hemlocks in Oregon. Trees as tall as 200 feet and as old as 450 years reside in this area. In 1976, the Valley of the Giants was designated as a protected place by the Bureau of Land Management and later an Outstanding Natural Area and Area of Critical Environmental Concern.

Home to researchers, educators and hikers, the Valley of the Giants is an area of pristine beauty. Hikers who make it to the trailhead can take an easy-to-moderate 1.4-mile loop through the forest, but the real difficulty is locating the Valley of Giants.

The Valley of Giants is 15 miles northeast of Falls City as the crow flies, but travelers must navigate through a winding labyrinth of logging roads which leads them on a 30-mile journey. Starting from Falls City, a one-way trip to the trailhead takes about 90 minutes.

Before you make a trip up to the Valley of the Giants, call the Salem BLM office (503375-5657) to ensure that the area is still open.

The area is usually closed during fire season (August through November).

The trip to the trailhead is on narrow graveled roads with the potential of log truck traffic.

“They (truckers) don’t slow down — it’s your job to get out of their way,” said Kimber

Townsend, a Monmouth resident who frequently schedules group hikes to the Valley of Giants – so make sure to drive carefully.

Another obstacle to reaching the Valley of the Giants is the absence of road markings.

The road frequently branches off and there’s only an occasional wood marker on the side of the road.

“Every once in a while the state goes through and puts up directional markers on the roadways ... and the markers either disappear or get spray-painted over,” Townsend said, “I really think that it’s people trying to protect it and not make it an easily found area. “ Global positioning systems don’t work well in the area and online directions are inaccurate and can lead you miles away from the Valley of the Giants. A brochure put out by the BLM provides detailed instructions to finding the place, so have access to that before you leave.

Not all is bad on the drive. The road takes you through the gorgeous scenery of the Oregon Coast Range, crosses many streams, goes through an empty lake bed, and follows a river for most the drive that offers some amazing swim spots.

If you make it to the trailhead, the hike will prove well worth your time. The trail, which is organically kept, begins on a steep descent, but levels out shortly after.

Being among the ancient trees is an awe-inducing experience.

“These giant, old trees, you put your hand on that tree and think about the hundreds of years that tree has stood in that spot, and what has passed under their branches,” Townsend said. “So you get that feeling of time. When you pass through this enormous tree, it’s like a heart in the forest.”

About halfway through the trail, there is a picnic table next to the Valsetz River that provides a nice resting spot. Going a little past the picnic table, you will find the 600-year-old Douglas-fir, Big Guy, that was toppled over in a windstorm in 1981 (It was the second largest Douglas-fir in Oregon).

“I love the examples of nature and rebirth and how it kind of takes its own,” Townsend said. “There are multiple places where there were trees that have been cut or trees that have fallen, and directly off of those stumps or logs you see new trees growing. We just don’t have many places that you can walk through an old-growth forest like that and understand what tree growth potential is.”

ourists to Polk County who are also a part of the oenophile community, can’t seem to throw a grape without hitting another vineyard to visit. Whether you’re a connoisseur of wine or just enjoy a glass to chase down a sample of a locally sourced cheese, choosing one of 29 wineries and vineyards on the current roster within Polk County can be daunting.

Jim Turner has a suggestion. While you wait for the tourist destinations to reopen, visit Radius, a tasting room in Dallas he and his wife, Tanya, opened. They signed their first agreement with Beckenridge Vineyard just before the coronavirus pandemic last March, and they now offer samples from 10 wineries around Dallas. They can help steer you toward something guaranteed to please the palate.

“Wine is such an individual taste,” Turner said, “that the best thing to do is determine if you like red, whites or roses then go to as

many wineries and taste as many red, white or rose flights as you can. Find one you like and stick with those.”

And you can’t go wrong with any selection from the Willamette Valley. Turner said the Valley is the second most popular growing spot for wine grapes in the world, trailing only France.

Making the selection is only part of wine tasting. Turner said enjoying the full experience actually takes technique.

First, pour the wine down the side of the glass to let it aerate. Then swirl it around the glass.

“Then stick your nose all the way into the glass, just get a huge nose full of what’s in there,” Turner said. “Some people get tentative, only sniff around the edge. The real way to do it is just stick your nose as far in as you can and sniff as deep as you can. You’re trying See PAGE 62

to make your brain understand what you’re smelling.”

Then, take a drink, but let it sit on your tongue. As it goes back, Turner said your tongue has three different zones to taste with.

It tastes different going in, sits in middle then hits base.

“All those areas offer different experiences.

As you develop the technique, you may eventually identify five to seven separate distinctive flavors throughout the tasting,” he explained.

Once you’ve made your selection at Radius and are ready to visit the actual vineyard, Turner recommends calling ahead. Not all are reopened yet as the county moves down in coronavirus risk levels while some that are open are reservation only while others are walk in.

A walk through history

FORT YAMHILL RECONSTRUCTS MILITARY, NATIVE LIFE, RELATIONS

O

nly one of the 24 buildings that once stood at Fort Yamhill remains, but it reveals a bit of what life was like when the military outpost was in operation from 1856-1866.

Those stationed there, particularly the officers, left plenty of clues behind that recent archaeological digs uncovered.

Some of those objects, military or domestic, are shown in window displays of an officer’s home at what is now Fort Yamhill State Heritage Area in Grand Ronde.

FYSHA opened in 2006 with the purpose of retelling the story of the fort and its role in the region’s history in the mid-1800s.

About 70 enlisted men and officers were stationed at the fort, which was built to protect — and monitor — Native Americans living on the Grand Ronde Reservation.

The six officers’ quarters at the top of the hill, painted bright white, and a fortified block house down the hill from the homes, painted

dark black, could be seen for miles around.

They symbolized U.S. military authority in the region to both settlers and native people.

Park Ranger Matt Huerter said development at the park is ongoing.

“This is a park in progress, and archaeology is helping us come up with plans to develop the park and influence the stories we tell,” Huerter said. “Through archaeology, we have been able to determine exactly where most of the buildings were and how big they were.”

Surprising artifacts have been found in recent years — some indicating the presence of women and children in the officers’ quarters.

Before that, the only women known to live at the fort were laundresses.

Visitors can walk the half-mile interpretative trail at the park to see where buildings once stood and read about living conditions at the fort and the famous soldiers who lived there.

The trail was built in cooperation with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.

Visitors have access to a picnic area and

multiple spots along the trail with expansive views of the surrounding area.

Huerter said that’s yet another reason to visit the park.

“The beauty,” he said. “It is very scenic.”

T

he beginning of December kicks off the Christmas season in Polk County, with events in every city.

Here is what is happening when Santa comes to town:

Dallas

The Dallas Christmas kick-off, Miracle on Main, is held in downtown Dallas at the Polk County Courthouse each year.

The event is held in the first week of December and begins in the late afternoon, and peaks when Santa arrives to light the tree and hear from children about their Christmas wishes.

gon University ushers in the Christmas season in Monmouth. This year, the event is in its 55th year.

In Monmouth, Santa’s Workshop and Gingerbread Village holiday light displays fill Main Street Park.

The Annual Griswold Competition continues with Monmouth’s local businesses competing for the “Blow the Fuse” Award.

You can participate by visiting all the decorated store fronts and be sure to vote for your favorite, one vote per email address.

Independence The Independence Downtown Association kicks off the Christmas season with Small Business Saturday.

The city will feature some festive light displays downtown and at Riverview Park.

The light display will be up the entire month of

December.

A Toys for Tots collection will take place throughout the season, with gifts going to children within the Central School District.

Falls City Now in its 10th year, the Christmas tree lighting in Falls City has become a holiday tradition.

The gathering to celebrate a tree lighting takes place in the parking lot next to Mountain Gospel Fellowship Church, 257 N. Main St. See future issues of the Itemizer-Observer for details on time and date.

The lighting will be a festive, but simple occasion, with hot chocolate, cider and desserts, and Christmas music to provide holiday spirit. It’s a perfect time to celebrate the season with other community members.

DALLAS’ SUMMER CELEBRATION GETS MAKEOVER

K

razy Dayz, Dallas’ signature festival, is not only slated to return in 2021, it will be reborn.

The schedule will remain the same, the last full weekend in July, this year July 22-25, with the first three days of the festival taking place in Dallas’ downtown core and the last day’s events in Dallas City Park.

As with Krazy Dayz of old, the Dallas Rotary Club will host Breakfast in the Park and the Dallas Arts Association will hold Art in the Park.

However, the setup for the downtown events will be modeled after Dallas’ successful solar eclipse event that took place in August 2017.

“As we were thinking of ways to re-energize our downtown summer celebration — and recalling the abundant turnout and positive feedback we received during the eclipse celebration in 2017 — the committee decided to coordinate a model similar to the downtown party coordinated by some of our community members and downtown merchants during the eclipse week,” said Dallas Police Chief Tom Simpson, who is the co-chair of the organizing committee.

this year’s festival special because 2020’s had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Organizers thought this year would be a good opportunity to remake the celebration, which has seen progressively lower turnouts in recent years.

“As for Thursday through Saturday — when our downtown core events occur — our City Manager (Brian Latta) has tasked us to do our best to facilitate a special event, in part because we had to miss last year and we believe the community is ready to get out and enjoy themselves — hopefully with somewhat lessened restrictions,” Simpson said. “More importantly, over the past several years, it seems there has a gradually reducing number of activities, vendors and participants at the ‘traditional’ Summerfest/Krazy Dayz events, so it seemed an appropriate time to change things up a bit.”

Downtown will be transformed for the first three days of the celebration.

Krazy Dayz 2021 edition will include an expanded food court, a beer garden and merchandise vendors on Main Street, which a portion of will be closed for the celebration.

On Friday and Saturday, a large stage will be set up on Court Street for live entertain-

ment. Also on Friday and Saturday, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament will take place on Mill Street.

Yes, there will be a parade, but a slightly different route.

Instead of running north up Jefferson Street and back south on Main Street to Washington Street, the parade will end at Main and Academy streets. Street closures for events on Main Street prompted the change to the parade route. Prior to the main parade, there will be a youth parade, with children encouraged to ride skateboards, bikes and scooters along the route.

Farm transforms for Faire RENAISSANCE RE-CREATED IN KINGS VALLEY

istory comes to life for one weekend in September at the Shrewsbury Renaissance Faire.

The faire returns in 2021 after being canceled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings.

Shrewsbury makes its appearance this year on Sept. 11-12.

The Shrewsbury team transforms a farm field in Kings Valley into a bustling Elizabethan village, complete with marketplace, a blacksmith, two taverns and, naturally, a jousting ring, said Organizer Jackie Hughes.

Hughes has been with Shrewsbury for 24 years. Leslie Engle, her husband Andrian Hughes’ mother, founded the two-day festival in 1995. Adrian and Jackie stepped in when Engle passed away.

Many of the same people are involved in putting the festival on each year, making each fair season like a giant family reunion, Jackie said.

More than 90 artisan vendors, entertainers and games await festival-goers in the 10 acres of field and seven acres of forest.

Jackie said they like to make sure people

don’t miss the forest area, where there are two stages and living history troupes that give hourly presentations.

There is a giant maze and activities for kids.

Performers fill four stages throughout the festival grounds.

Among those are No Parchment Needed — an Elizabethan version of “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” and Adria the sword juggler.

They even strive to have fun with some of the less enjoyable aspects of the era — there is a rat hunt.

To clarify, the “rats” are actually humans wearing rodent masks.

When someone spots a rat, he or she gets a ribbon to tie on their bracelet, which they can then turn in at the end of the day “for goodies,” she said.

“Everyone can hunt, no charge,” Hughes said.

fter the 2020 Polk County Fair was canceled due to the pandemic, organizers are excited for its return this summer, unveiling a new theme reflecting a focus on scaled-back activities: “Back to Our Roots.”

“We just feel that’s where we are, going back to our agricultural roots, returning to an old-fashioned fair, highlighting animal shows and static exhibits,” said Polk County Fair Manager Tina Andersen.

She said the Fair Board has been trying to plan which attractions will be featured in the three-day event Aug. 12-14. New to the decision makers are Paul Thompson and Will Barnhart,

who replaced recently retired Nita Wilson and Linda Lambert, who moved to Idaho.

“We’ve had a good turnover of board members, especially in these changing times.

It’s good to have fresh eyes, seeing things rest of us long time members are not seeing,” Andersen said.

However, they are facing some big hurdles on their decision-making process.

First, the fair’s coffers started this year nearly empty. Andersen figures the Polk County Fair lost close to $300,000 in revenue last year to the canceled main event.

“We’ve been scraping by paying bills,” Andersen said, adding other groups are not

too gung ho yet to return. Many events are still canceled for 2021.

“A lot of nonprofits are not ready for 2021.

But 2022 is booked solid,” she said.

Some of the board’s definitive decisions were based on knowing the fairgrounds will be limited to 50 percent capacity.

Andersen said admission will be reduced this year to $5 for everyone ages five and older.

Ages five and under will be free. However, tickets will need to be purchased online to help staff better monitor how many are on the grounds per day.

Andersen said the grounds can technically hold a little over 13,000 people, though they rarely reach full capacity.

Returning this year will be the kids’ market show and auction, a huge highlight at the fair, Andersen said, featuring the Saturday auction of animals raised by 4H and FAA members.

Additionally, the popular dinosaurs exhibit, miniature train and an entire playground full of free kids’ activities will be returning. www.polkio.com

However, some other popular attractions won’t be returning due to cost cuts, such as the “pirate ship guy and his parrots,” Andersen said Meanwhile, the board is still waiting on final word from the state for additional guidelines to host their bigger events, like the Fremont Tractor Ride, rodeo and bouncy houses.

“It all depends on what the governor tells us what we have to do with social distancing,” Andersen said. “We don’t have the staff or ability to do some of that. It’s really hard to try to plan anything during COVID.” While they’re not planning a big entertainment stage, there will be a small community stage that will feature local acts, the France School of Dance and popular “Beautiful Baby Contest.”

The fair’s schedule is still tentative, but there will be live music, a comedy show, a 4H animal contest and the rodeo on Thursday.

Friday will have a cookie contest, an animal showcase, free monster truck rides, and the youth and adult talent showcase that evening.
