Message from the Executive Director

By the time you read this, you will likely have already heard the news that I have decided to resign from my executive director’s position at PACA to take the helm at The AGB Museum of Art in a permanent capacity. In my several months there as the Interim Executive Director, I’ve relished working with the museum staff and I’m excited about providing leadership for one of our county’s leading cultural institutions. And while that excitement is fulfilling, this decision is bittersweet for me as well.

In my four years leading the Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance, I’ve come to better understand the significant arts and cultural contributions that our local arts organizations and local artists bring to our community. Whether it in the southernmost reaches of the county in Frostproof, over on the Ridge, or in Winter Haven or Lakeland, Polk County has tremendous arts and cultural offerings for our residents and visitors alike. It’s been an honor to get to know the people who make art happen in our county and I’m hopeful I was able to support their efforts during my tenure at PACA.

I’m immensely proud of what we have been able to accomplish at PACA in the past few years. Perhaps my personal favorite is the Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame Gala. This annual event has become a hallmark of the calendar each year for its efforts to honor the men and women who’ve made significant contributions to the arts and cultural sector in our county. I’m also delighted that the funds we’ve raised via this event have been turned right around and used to fund the Arts & Cultural Impact grants. These grants provide much-needed financial resources for our local artists and local arts organizations. And finally, the annual publication of the Polk Arts Guide is also something that brings me satisfaction – we needed a way to make our visitors and new residents aware of the variety of arts and cultural experiences that are available here in Polk County.

I also want to take some space in the column to thank the PACA Board of Directors. Though there have been various iterations of board members

throughout my four years, each group has been both extremely supportive of me and my vision for the organization AND deeply committed to advancing PACA’s goal to make Polk County a “destination for the arts.” I have developed personal relationships through my interaction with the Board that I will forever cherish. I also think it’s important to say that under the Board’s leadership, PACA will continue to move forward in its efforts to promote our local arts organizations and local art experiences.

I want to wrap up with special thanks. I appreciate the previous executive director, Meri Mass for recommending me for this position nearly five years ago. Additionally, I’m grateful for the time I was able to work alongside Bev Hendricks as she passionately crafted each Art-i-facts issue. And finally, I appreciate our “newest hire,” Jordan Weiland. I’ve enjoyed watching her flourish as she executes her role as Arts Program and Marketing Coordinator. In fact, Jordan will hand all the day-to-day operations of PACA until a new executive director is named. So I close with a simple thank you to all who’ve supported me in role as the leader of PACA; it’s truly been one of the highlights of my professional career.

And if you need a “Daryl fix,” feel free to come see me at The AGB!

Art in Transit

BRINGING CREATIVITY TO EVERY COMMUTE IN POLK COUNTY

Public transportation in Polk County has taken on a vibrant new life thanks to Art in Transit, a year long creative partnership between the Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance and Citrus Connection. Designed to weave the arts directly into the daily experience of bus riders, the program transforms ordinary commutes into moments of inspiration, reflection, and community connection.

Art in Transit was created with a simple goal: make the arts more accessible to everyone. By integrating music, visual art, poetry, and soon even performance arts into the transit system, the program ensures that creativity isn’t limited to galleries or stages—it’s part of everyday life for thousands of riders across the county. The program kicked off in December with a joyful burst of holiday spirit. Riders arriving at the Lakeland and Winter Haven bus terminals were greeted by live

carolers, filling the stations with seasonal music and warmth.

To spark creativity among passengers of all ages, 125 artist kits were distributed—generously sponsored by the AGB Museum of Art at Florida Southern College. These kits encouraged riders to create art of their own, reinforcing the program’s commitment to community engagement and hands on participation.

Across Polk County, nine bus stops have been transformed into outdoor galleries. Each features original artwork by local artists, all inspired by themes of transportation and movement. These installations brighten the landscape and celebrate the diverse artistic talent within the community, turning every day waiting areas into spaces of beauty and imagination.

In February, buses became moving stages for storytelling and cultural celebration. Riders heard

Painting by Tricia Yeager.

recordings of local Black authors reading their own poetry, creating a powerful and intimate experience during their commute. The audio program was framed by a special introduction and conclusion from Commissioner Ashley Troutman, honoring Black History Month, highlighting the importance of elevating local voices.

Riders can also enjoy visual art while on board. Five hundred bus cards now feature artwork by beloved local illustrator Josh “Bump” Galletta, known for his playful, energetic style. These small but impactful pieces add joy and personality to the buses, offering riders a moment of delight during their journey and allowing 500 individuals a keepsake piece of art.

The Art in Transit program is just getting started. Future initiatives aim to bring theatre and dance arts into the transit experience, expanding the program’s reach and offering riders even more opportunities to encounter creativity in unexpected places.

Art in Transit is more than a series of artistic installations—it’s a celebration of community, culture, and connection. By bringing the arts directly to the people, Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance and Citrus Connection are enriching daily life, supporting local artists, and demonstrating the power of creativity to transform public spaces.

Mural Magic

EXPLORING POLK COUNTY’S VIBRANT PUBLIC ART SCENE

Polk County’s arts landscape has always been colorful, expressive, and deeply rooted in community storytelling. Now, a new digital experience is inviting residents and visitors to explore that creativity in an entirely fresh way. Visit Central Florida has launched the Mural Magic Pass, a free, gamified mobile pass that transforms Polk County’s public art into an interactive cultural adventure.

From Lakeland to Lake Wales, Winter Haven to Davenport, murals have become an essential part of Polk County’s visual identity. They brighten alleyways, anchor downtown

districts, and celebrate the people, history, and imagination that shape each community. The Mural Magic Pass brings these works together into a curated, self-guided journey that rewards exploration.

Users simply check in at mural locations across the county to earn points. Those points can then be redeemed for exclusive art-themed prizes at the Visit Central Florida Welcome Center in Davenport — a fitting home base, as the center features its own vibrant “Welcome” mural created by Lakeland artist Gillian Fazio.

For Justin Laferriere, Senior Visitor Services Manager with Visit Central Florida, the pass is more than a scavenger hunt — it’s a way to deepen engagement with the arts while supporting local businesses and neighborhoods.

“We view these passes as an integral part of the experience within our destination,” Laferriere said. “The Mural Magic Pass is a great way to get our visitors and residents alike moving throughout the county to enjoy our vibrant arts and culture scene.”

Because many murals are located in the heart of Polk County’s downtowns,

passholders naturally find themselves wandering into local shops, cafés, and gathering spaces. The murals become gateways — not just to art appreciation, but to the communities that nurture that art.

The murals featured in the pass represent a wide range of artistic voices from across Central Florida. Some pieces honor local history, others celebrate nature or cultural heritage, and many simply bring joy through bold color and imaginative design. Together, they form a living gallery that evolves as new works appear throughout the county.

By spotlighting these murals, the Mural Magic Pass elevates the work of local artists and encourages a deeper appreciation for public art as a vital part of Polk County’s cultural ecosystem.

Muralist Maegan Carroll shared, "After painting the Magnolia mural, I’ve seen how much traffic a single mural can bring to one spot. Public art enriches people’s lives in so many ways. I’ve seen so many come together to take photos in front of the wall during farmers' markets and First Fridays, and also for life’s special moments like engagements, baby announcements, and graduations.

Murals have a big impact on the community by adding more color to our city and supporting the arts."

The Visit Central Florida Welcome Center in Davenport serves as the hub for the Mural Magic Pass. Visitors can redeem prizes, pick up travel inspiration, browse Florida-themed gifts, and even snap a photo with the center’s own mural masterpiece.

The Welcome Center is open daily from 8am to 5pm (excluding major holidays) and is located at 101 Adventure Court, Davenport — just south of I4.

MURAL ARTIST MAEGAN CARROLL-SIMMONS

When and how were you approached for the mural that you have completed?

The owners of the Sommer building and the Stationery Loft reached out to me directly after seeing another mural I was working on in Lakeland. Heidi wanted something that would honor her great-niece, Magnolia, and match the decor and vibe of the Stationery Loft.

How do you feel about being included in the Magic Mural Pass from Visit Central Florida?

I think it's so cool! Being

recognized for my work and asked to paint a giant wall in the middle of downtown is still surreal to me. I don't know if I'll ever get used to it. It's kind of a big deal to be trusted to paint such big walls.

Maegan's other murals in Polk County are the Cultivate mural at Catapult Lakeland, all of the murals at Union Hall, Balance Culture, Pour Bear Coffee, and Southside Nutrition. Follow her work at www.maecarroll.art or on Instagram at @maecarroll.art

Beethoven in Plaster

THE MASKS THAT MADE THE MAN

In the summer of 1812, as Europe convulsed with war and revolution, Ludwig van Beethoven worked in near-total silence of his incurable deafness in Teplitz (now Czech Republic), completing his Seventh and Eighth Symphonies. Hidden in a drawer nearby lay a ten-page letter to his mysterious “immortal beloved,” a confession he never sent. Into this charged atmosphere stepped the young sculptor Franz Klein, tasked with capturing Beethoven’s likeness in plaster.

The sitting was anything but serene. Klein greased Beethoven’s face, inserted breathing straws into his nostrils, and applied the wet plaster. Overwhelmed, Beethoven bolted from the room in panic before finally submitting to a second attempt. The resulting life mask reveals the composer’s powerful brow, angular jaw, and the pockmarked skin left by childhood illness — an unvarnished portrait of a man already becoming myth.

Beethoven agreed to the ordeal partly as a favor to a friend, but also because he had begun to grasp his own historical weight. A decade earlier, confronting permanent deafness, he vowed to “seize fate by the throat” and fulfill the creative force he felt within him. The life mask became the first physical artifact of that self-understanding.

Fifteen years later, on March 26, 1827, Beethoven died at age 56. Legend tells that a lightning flash and thunderclap shook Vienna as he briefly opened his eyes, raised a clenched fist, and fell back dead — an image perfectly suited to the Romantic imagination. Whether true or not, it cemented him as the archetype of the defiant, suffering genius.

Klein’s death mask, taken shortly afterward, shows a very different Beethoven: gaunt, hollow-cheeked, and marked by years of illness. Copies circulated widely,

studied by 19th-century phrenologists and later by medical researchers. More importantly, they became objects of cultural devotion. Together, the life and death masks frame Beethoven’s mature life like bookends, preserving not just a face but an idea — that this was a figure whose physical presence deserved to be archived alongside his manuscripts.

By the late 19th century, Beethoven’s image had become ubiquitous. Busts of the composer appeared on pianos across German-speaking Europe, functioning almost like secular icons. His influence radiated far beyond music: invoked by political movements on all sides, celebrated at the fall of the Berlin Wall, and woven into Hollywood, gaming, advertising, and even cryptocurrency branding. The opening motif of his Fifth Symphony — da-da-da-DUM — became a World War II victory symbol and remains one of the most recognizable musical phrases in history.

The masks play a crucial role in sustaining this cultural presence. They make Beethoven tangible, immediate, and human, even as his legend grows ever larger. They remind us that behind the myth stood a real person — flawed, brilliant, and fiercely determined.

You can encounter these rare life and death masks in person at the Spiritus faculty piano trio concert, presented by the SEU School of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Lakeland on March 22, 2026 at 7pm. The event is free and open to the public. The masks will also appear at additional School of Music events throughout March. Special thanks to the collector who has generously shared them with our community and to First Presbyterian Church for hosting this remarkable experience.

Kids Tag Art

PROGRAM CELEBRATES TWO DECADES OF FUNDRAISING FOR ELEMENTARY ART PROGRAMS

As Kids Tag Art approaches its 20th anniversary in 2026, the beloved program celebrates two decades of championing young artists, fueling elementary art classrooms, and adding a burst of creativity to license plates across Polk County.

Launched in 2006 by Tax Collector Joe G. Tedder, the initiative began as a local fundraiser and quickly grew into a statewide phenomenon. Today, Kids Tag Art operates in more than a dozen Florida counties and has generated nearly $3 million to support elementary art programs.

Each fall, fifth-grade students in public, private, and charter schools dive into the creative process, designing their own specialty front license plates as part of a broader Fine Arts and Civics curriculum. The result is a joyful blend of imagination and real-world application—art with purpose and personality.

After the artwork is completed, designs are entered into the annual contest and made available for purchase at www.KidsTagArt.com. Every spring, student artists and their teachers are honored at a countywide awards ceremony. Community partners, including Major Sponsor Southern Homes of Polk County, select standout pieces for special recognition.

For the 2025–2026 school year, Tedder chose Isaiah Jackson of Bartow Elementary Academy as the recipient of the Tax Collector’s Choice Award (featured top left).

Jackson’s design will ride proudly on the front of Tedder’s vehicle throughout the year.

“Isaiah’s Tag Art instantly made me smile, and I’m really drawn to artwork that gives me that feeling,” Tedder shared. “This is going to look fantastic traveling the county on my car over the next year.”

As Kids Tag Art enters its third decade, the program shows no signs of slowing. Its mission remains clear: inspire creativity, connect classroom learning to the community, and ensure that art teachers have the resources they need to help students thrive.

BARTOW ART GUILD FEATURED ARTIST

Cheryl Hughes

For painter and teacher Cheryl Hughes, art began early—at age ten, in her first oil painting class—and never let go. From that first brushstroke, she knew she wanted to draw, paint, and explore creatively. She went on to study Commercial Art at a vocational high school, followed by Fine Art studies in college, building a strong technical foundation that supports the joyful freedom of her work today.

Inspired by the ocean and its creatures, Hughes creates vivid, whimsical paintings filled with color, movement, and imagination. Drawing from the rugged beauty of Maine and the vibrant energy of Florida, where she now spends much of her time, her work blends two worlds into one playful, expressive vision. She often paints en plein air, letting the

spontaneity of nature shape her brushwork and bring energy directly onto the canvas.

Teaching is central to Hughes’s life as an artist. Through in-person workshops and online classes, she shares her love of painting with students of all levels, using an encouraging, approachable style that helps others find their own creative voice. Her work invites viewers to step into joyful, underwater dreamscapes—worlds where color, motion, and imagination meet.

Surround Yourself Under the Sea will be on view at Bartow Art Guild’s Momentum Gallery April 4-25, with an Opening Reception and Meet the Artist on April 13 from 6-8pm.

Lakeland Community Theatre turns 40

FOUR

DECADES OF CULTURE

For four decades, Lakeland Community Theatre (LCT) has been the epicenter of the local performing arts scene, transforming from a grassroots children’s troupe into a multi-generational cultural powerhouse. This season, as LCT celebrates its landmark 40th Anniversary, the spotlight shines brighter than ever on its history, its community impact, and an upcoming gala that promises to be the ticket of the year.

The history of theatre at Lake Mirror stretches back over 70 years, the modern era of LCT was born from a pressing community need. The story of Lakeland Community Theatre began with a simple mission: to give Lakeland’s youth a voice. Formed in 1986 as the Pied Piper Players, the organization was a response from local citizens, led by Rick Olivo, who saw a need for dedicated children’s theater. Olivo successfully led Pied Piper Players for its first season.

Paul Hughes took the reins from Olivo in 1987 and spent the next two decades transforming the fledgling youth

program into a full-scale community theatre powerhouse. By the time he stepped down in 2007, the theatre had grown from two shows a year to a fully founded community theatre that offered professional-grade productions for both adults and youth.

By the 2007/2008 season, the organization’s reach had grown so significantly that it began to use its more adult name Lakeland Community Theatre. Under the leadership of Artistic Managing Director Alan S. Reynolds, LCT evolved into a premier destination for high-quality, affordable theatre in Central Florida. If Hughes was the architect who built the house, Reynolds is the visionary who has filled it with modern, professional polish and has steered it into its most successful era.

Reynolds often speaks of the theatre as a "cultural heartbeat" for Lakeland. His philosophy centers on accessibility, keeping ticket prices affordable while ensuring every production feels like a world-class event.

The impact of LCT over the last 40 years is best

understood through the incredible numbers that define its tenure. Throughout the last 40 years, LCT has produced more than 350 productions, with more than 420,000 audience members taking them in. Many LCT alumni have parlayed their local experiences into professional careers. Notable LCT alumni include Karen Olivo, Tony Award winner for West Side Story (Moulin Rouge, Hamilton, and Rent), Quentin Earl Darrington (Once on This Island, Ragtime, Memphis, Lion King, MJ the Musical), and Lindsay Alley (Mickey Mouse Club Mouseketeer).

What truly distinguishes LCT is that it is a theatre of the people, by the people. While the productions are professional in quality, the engine driving them is the passion of community members who share their talents as a labor of love. Approximately 1,500,000 volunteer hours have been logged in the past 40 years!

When you watch a show at LCT, you aren't just a spectator; you are supporting your neighbor, your colleague, or your friend. This collaborative spirit is the magic that has sustained the theatre for forty years.

Despite its 40-year history, many locals still describe LCT as a "hidden gem" waiting to be fully discovered. Tucked away within the Lake Mirror Center Complex, the theatre’s unassuming exterior belies the world-class talent and professional production value found within. It is a place where the barrier between actor and audience vanishes, and where the "amateur" label is frequently defied by performances that rival those found in major metropolitan hubs. For many residents, their first visit to LCT is a "discovery" that turns them into lifelong theatergoers.

As LCT celebrates its 40th season, the focus remains on its mission: providing a safe, nurturing, and professional environment for the people of Polk County to showcase their talents. LCT remains committed to providing exceptional entertainment that can be enjoyed by everyone. In Lakeland, the arts are not a luxury—they are an essential engine for community growth. And LCT is proud to be at the forefront of ensuring the arts are alive, well, and accessible to everyone.
