Message from the Executive Director

While this issue marks the start of our “new” year – the beginning of our Fall Season – I want to take some time to reflect on the things that the Polk arts and culture scene should be thankful for. While the recent elimination of arts funding in the State of Florida 2025 budget is certainly distressing, it also saw some local arts supporters step up to provide some funding to offset the budgetary losses for some of our arts organizations. It’s always encouraging to see philanthropy being sparked at the local level. Additionally, it moved the conversation “to the front page” regarding the importance of arts and cultural experiences to all of Florida’s local communities.

Additionally, the recent generous donation to the Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College by Nick and Ashley Gibson Barnett is historic in its goal to continue the sustainability of one of Polk’s arts and cultural anchors. The Asley Gibson Barnett Museum at Florida Southern College will continue bringing world-class exhibits and offering top-tier art experiences for locals and visitors alike.

I also continue to be thankful for work our local arts and cultural organizations do to better our local communities. Watson Clinic’s Arts In Medicine initiative, Sandy’s MusicGirls Camp at the Lake Wales Arts Center, and the Out of the Box Troupe at Lakeland Community Theatre to name a few, all use art experiences to enhance Polk’s quality of life. You can find out which organizations are up for the “Art For Good” award at this year’s Hall of Fame Gala on Page 21 of this issue. Truly, all of them are already winners for their selfless work.

Switching gears for just a bit, PACA is now in the thick of promoting and preparing for the 2024 Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame Gala. This celebratory evening, presented by CORE Wealth Advisors, is set to be the highlight of the arts and cultural year as it not only recognizes individuals and organizations via the Annual Awards, but it also rightly highlights five new inductees into the Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame. These five arts and cultural “rockstars” have all made significant contributions to Polk’s arts and cultural heritage and their induction recognizes their lifetime achievements. Read more about them on Page 20.

Finally, I want to thank the Ridge Art Association – and specifically Ron Malone and Christy Hemenway – for their assistance with a brand-new initiative at this year’s Hall of Fame Gala – The Best of Polk Show. This new exhibition opportunity is a “best of Polk” visual arts show to highlight the wondrous talent and skill of Polk artists. This juried art show wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of Ridge Art and their gracious volunteers. They are assisting PACA with the numerous logistics that come with initiating and hosting an art exhibit. With $5000 in prizes, I’m hopeful our local artists will consider entering their best work to further add to the celebratory nature of the Hall of Fame Gala. Puttin’ On The Ritz – Again!

A switch is flipped. The neon sign hums to life, and the words “Ritz Theatre” illuminate the cityscape in its nearby radius. Heels tap the pavement as guests excitedly make their way to the front doors after enjoying dinner at a downtown establishment. This dream hopes to become a reality for the City of Winter Haven, as the new owners of the historic venue. The City of Winter Haven has embarked on an ambitious project to purchase and revitalize the historic Ritz Theatre, ensuring its place as a cornerstone of the city's cultural and economic landscape. This acquisition, driven by the City's vision and the collaborative efforts with Theatre Winter Haven, aims to breathe new life into this iconic venue and enrich the community with diverse cultural experiences.

The theatre, built in 1925, was home to live performances, films, and concerts in the “friendly city” of Winter Haven. It debuted local films, like Easy to Love (1953) filmed at nearby Cypress Gardens. As time passed, the theatre eventually went dark until a group of concerned citizens saved the facility nearly thirty years ago. This January, the Ritz Theatre Board of Directors approached the City of Winter Haven with a proposition to acquire the theatre. Motivated by the potential for economic

development and the city’s longtime relationship with Theatre Winter Haven, the City of Winter Haven City Commission approved the purchase agreement in June, with the transaction set to close on August 5, 2024.

“The Ritz [Theatre] plays a significant role in the history of Winter Haven, and specifically downtown,” City Manager, T. Michael Stavres said. “A successful venue further expands cultural art opportunities for our citizens and visitors,” he added.

The City's collaboration with Theatre Winter Haven, which has a longstanding partnership managing the City's performance stages at the AdventHealth Fieldhouse, will extend to the Ritz, promising to deliver world-class entertainment and cultural events to the residents of Winter Haven. Dan Chesnicka, Producing Director for Theatre Winter Haven, is no stranger to the Ritz. Theatre Winter Haven produced several events for the Ritz a few years ago in between executive directors for The Ritz. “Now that the City has purchased the Ritz, our relationship has expanded. Together we will continue to deliver world-class entertainment to the people of Winter Haven, just now on one more stage,” Chesnicka said.

The revitalized Ritz Theatre will offer a vibrant and varied program schedule, aiming to engage a broad audience and drive foot traffic to downtown Winter Haven. The planned programming includes:

• Tribute Tuesday Concerts: Honoring musical legends like The Eagles, The Beatles, and Fleetwood Mac.

• Variety Series on Wednesdays: Featuring diverse acts such as symphonies, magicians, dueling pianos, and comedians, paired with dinner.

• High-Energy Comedy Musical Bingo on Thursdays: A lively, irreverent show with live entertainment.

• Friday Dance Hall: Themed dance nights, ranging from country line dancing to 80s parties and Latin nights.

• Themed Brunches on Saturdays: Including unique experiences like a Jimmy Buffet Brunch Buffet or a Simon and Garfunkel-themed brunch.

• Musical Sunday Brunches: Showcasing local talent and previewing upcoming Theatre Winter Haven performances.

The Ritz also plans to host special events on notable holidays and serve as a community hub for watch parties for major events like the Super Bowl and the Academy Awards.

In addition to a new program schedule, significant upgrades are planned for the Ritz Theatre to enhance the patron experience. Theatre Winter Haven is spearheading efforts to improve seating, sound, and lighting. Additionally, new infrastructure will support robust catering capabilities for dinner shows and entertainment brunches. Long-term improvements will focus on the roof and HVAC system, alongside enhancements to handicap accessibility, ensuring the Ritz remains a welcoming and state-of-the-art venue for all visitors.

As exciting as this project is for the City of Winter Haven, the project is not without its challenges. The recent loss of arts funding via the State of Florida budget poses financial concerns, and the existing Theatre Winter Haven staff, already managing over 250 nights of entertainment annually, will be stretched thin. Despite these obstacles, the commitment to making the Ritz a success remains strong.

The acquisition and revitalization of the Ritz Theatre signifies a significant investment in the community's cultural and economic future. With the City's ownership and Theatre Winter Haven’s expert management, the Ritz is poised to become a vibrant hub of activity, offering unparalleled cultural experiences and contributing to the growth and vitality of downtown Winter Haven. “We hope to give people a reason to come back over and over again,” Chesnicka said. Look to theatrewinterhaven.com for announcements on their season line-up. The new schedule is expected to premiere this month.

LEGACIES in Polk Government Leadership

The Polk County History Center has unveiled a new exhibit exploring the establishment of the Polk County Government and the Polk County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC). The exhibit honors the men and women in county government whose service marked a turning point in the county’s history.

Polk County was legally established on Feb. 8, 1861. The first elected Polk County officials were William S. Harris, Isaac Waters, James Hamilton, Joseph Mizelle, William H. Durrance, Levi W. Cornelius, Silas McClelland and William B. Varn. The size and the responsibilities of the Polk County BoCC changed over the years in accordance with revisions to the Florida Constitution in 1885, 1900 and 1944. The exhibit includes a legacy wall to honor the contributions of Polk County’s elected or appointed officials, including those who have served on citizen advisory boards. Nominations for honorees are made by the public and approved by the Polk County Historical Commission.

The inaugural inductees, who were recognized on March 28, 2024, in a special ceremony at the Polk County History Center, were Charles R. Richardson Sr. and Brenda Taylor. Richardson, of Bartow, became Polk’s first Black commissioner when elected to office in 2002. He served on the commission for only 11 months before succumbing to cancer. Taylor, of Lakeland, served as Polk’s first female commissioner in 1976. She served two terms as County Commissioner and later worked with the Central Florida Development Council until her retirement in 2006. Taylor passed away in 2024.

“Legacies in Polk Government Leadership” is now open at the Polk County History Center. For more information, visit www.polkhistorycenter.org or call (863) 534-4386. The Polk County History Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is always free.

Artists in the News

Local Artist Heads to Venice

Marcia Morse Mullins, a Polk-based fiber artist, received an exciting email earlier this year: an invitation to exhibit at the prestigious Homo Faber Biennial in Venice, Italy. “They discovered my website and had chosen my work for the exhibition long before they reached out. They wanted natural materials and organic shapes created with meticulous attention to detail, which perfectly describes my work,” Mullins said.

A botanist by training, Mullins skillfully merges her knowledge of plants with traditional weaving techniques. Mullins’ local connections include being President of Bartow Art Guild, a nonprofit that supports local artists through exhibits, education, and gatherings like the Bloomin’ Arts Festival, which Bartow Art Guild founded 53 years ago. She is also a veteran of several outdoor art festivals, including Lakeland’s Mayfaire-by-the-Lake.

Homo Faber 2024: The Journey of Life will include 400 works by 300 artisans from 50 countries. The showcase will immerse visitors in a rich human narrative that weaves its way through Fondazione Giorgio Cini, located on San Giorgio Maggiore island in Venice, Italy. Live artisan demonstrations, entertainment, and gastronomic samplings will complement the exhibition while artisans throughout Venice will open their studio doors to visitors. It is a unique opportunity to visit the magnificent spaces of this worldrenowned cultural destination.

Mullins is excited by this opportunity, but realizes that it comes at a significant cost. Friends of the artist have set up a “Go Fund Me” account to help defray the cost of the trip. Readers can join in this support by using the QR code.

Pictures From The Edge of The World

For hundreds of years, Portugal was considered the “edge of the world.” As Portugal sits at the edge of Europe - and at that time, the edge of the known world - it became a starting point for the age of discovery. Ancient explorers left the familiar shores of the country, uncertain of what they would find as they ventured far from their homeland. When you stand on one of Portugal’s rocky coasts and dramatic seashores, and stare out at the vast Atlantic Ocean, you really do feel like your are standing at the edge of the world.

In December 2023, Craig Collins, Andy Glogower, and Daryl Ward went on a “photographic field trip” to Portugal where they were treated to diverse photographic opportunities – the rocky coastal landscape of the Algarve, the bustling cities of Lisbon and Porto, intimate beach towns, and the serenity of a coastal lagoon. One of the benefits of having a show with three featured photographers is that the viewer can get a sense for how artists are able to portray the same scene differently. In this exhibit, you’ll see how each person articulates his own unique artistic vision - often while contemplating the same subject matter.

The artists would like to thank their wives for supporting their desires to travel halfway around the world to drink port, make dad-jokes, and take pictures. Hopefully that support paid off in images that viewers will find engaging and serve as a celebration of the beautiful world in which we live.

Pictures From The Edge of The World: Photographs of Portugal will be featured in the Bartow Art Guild Gallery from August 24 – September 21 with the chance to meet the artists at the reception on Monday, September 9 from 6--8pm.

Everything, Everywhere, All Around Town

Denise Settles is a local artist who grew up in Lakeland, FL. “I have spent the last 30 years of my life here; and still every day is a discovery.”

Originally born in Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia, her parents were expats during her early childhood, working in Saudi Arabia, and the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands before permanently relocating to Lakeland.

“I enjoy highlighting the charm of Central Florida’s many shared spaces, and the wildlife that we share these spaces with. It is endless nostalgia: the wildlife, the lakes, the parks, the businesses, and the streets that surround us. It is a shared collective. We all are anchored by our landscape and our surroundings. We reminisce about it; we live it.”

Denise began exploring her medium during her time at Polk State College. She works with watercolor and ink on canvas. It was at the end of her studies there that she realized how much she loved drawing the local wildlife and drawing it with ink. “I use those old-fashioned calligraphy nibs to draw everything with. It’s amazing how many marks can be made with those tiny nibs in such short amount of time.” Some of her work has thousands and thousands of marks. “Re-dipping the calligraphy pen in the ink and applying it is a very methodic and calming process that transfers to the work, especially in large scale pieces.”

Denise began showing her work at the Art Crawl, in 2018. Her work has been exhibited, recognized, and collected throughout many Polk County Art Festivals, First Friday events, as well as local markets where she sells novelty items of her local scenes. Her large-scale work along with other pieces is available at the Polk Museum of Art’s Gift Shop. Denise’s exclusive children’s museum prints and postcards can be found at the Florida Children’s Museum.

Everything, Everywhere, All Around Town will be featured in the Bartow Art Guild Gallery from October 5 – November 9 with the chance to meet this artist at the reception on Monday, October 14 from 6-8pm.

Betsye Kay Finch Performing Arts Foundation Awards Scholarship to Justin Brock

Justin Brock, a talented dancer and 2024 graduate of Harrison School for the Arts, received the fifth annual Betsye Kay Finch Performing Arts Scholarship on May 6. Justin, who dances jazz, tap, ballet, modern, hiphop, and pointe, fell in love with dance at age 10 after having “struck out” at baseball, karate and swimming. None of these sports “stuck,” he said in his scholarship application essay, because “they lacked creativity.” But after snagging a part in a middle school musical “Beauty and the Beast,” he “instantly fell in love with … being on the stage and entertaining.” Justin, of Bartow, began mastering his footwork at the Highland School of Dance in Lakeland, where he danced in numerous performances including The Nutcracker, Snow King, Don Quixote, and Alice in Wonderland. As a dance major at The Harrison School for the Arts, he performed in the Annual Winter and Spring Concerts and the Student Faculty Showcase.

To further hone his footwork, Justin has taken summer intensive classes at FSC Dance Performance & Choreography program, FSU School of Dance, and Modas Dance Summer Intensive, in New Mexico. More recently, he won the 2023 Senior Mr. Dance award at the Florida Dance Masters, Inc. Justin will apply his $3,000 scholarship to pursue his dreams as a dance major at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. Helping students realize their dreams was the aim of dance teacher Betsye Kay Finch, of Lakeland, who taught jazz, ballet and modern dance at Betsye Kay’s School of Dance for three decades, and performed in local musicals. Ms. Finch passed away at age 92 in 2019, after which her daughter, Alexis Rocker, launched the BKF Performing Arts Foundation to keep her joy of musical theatre alive. The foundation awards annual scholarships to Polk County high school seniors pursuing a degree in musical theatre or dance. For more on the foundation, visit https://www.bkfperformingarts.org/.

PACA To Induct Five New Members into Hall of Fame

The Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance will induct five new members into the Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame in October. Created in 2014, the Hall of Fame was designed to recognize the lifetime achievements of Polk’s arts and cultural icons. “We’re excited to honor these five individuals,” said Dr. Daryl Ward, the Executive Director of PACA. “Their contributions to Polk’s rich arts and cultural heritage are certainly worthy of celebration.”

This year’s cohort includes a “Cultural Champion,” two arts educators, and two artists – including the Hall of Fame’s very first literary arts inductee. Additionally, two of the inductees have already been recognized for their lifetime achievement in the arts: Jim Stafford from Winter Haven was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2017 while Frank Howes of Lakeland was inducted into the Florida Bandmaster’s Hall of Fame in 2003. The rest of the Class of 2024 have all made their mark on Polk’s arts and cultural scene. In addition to Stafford and Howes, also being inducted this year are Canter Brown, Jr (Ft. Meade), Jessie Owens (Winter Haven), and Myrtice Young (Bartow). Bonnie Parker, longtime arts and culture advocate assisted in the selection process and was impressed by the new class. She says, “As time marches on, future generations of Polk Countians could miss out on our rich culture and arts history if we don’t make the effort to ensure a public record is kept of those who have made such a positive impact on our arts community. In addition, it is just right that we honor those who have committed so much of themselves to the arts scene, as they have made all of our lives better because of their contribution.”

Brown, who grew up in Ft. Meade, is an historian, professor, and author. With degrees from Florida State University, he taught at Florida A&M University and Ft. Valley State University and is the author or co-author of thirteen books about Florida and southern United States history. These include the book, Florida’s Peace River Frontier, which earned him the Florida Historical Society’s Rembert W. Patrick Award. Brown also compiled a two-volume history of Polk County: In the Midst of All That Makes Life Worth Living: Polk County to 1940 and None Could Have Richer Memories: Polk County Since 1940.

Howes, a lifelong music educator, was the band director at Southwest Middle School, the principal at Harrison School for the Arts, and the Director of Fine Arts for Polk County Public Schools in a career that spanned 40 years. In addition to his service to the Florida Music Educators Association, Howes founded the Hollingsworth Winds, a music group designed to unite musicians from the local community and provide opportunities for wind players and percussionists to perform high-quality literature in formal concert settings.

Owens has been a fixture in music education in the Winter Haven area for over 50 years. She retired from her career as a choral director from Polk County Public Schools after 42 years and has served as Adjunct Professor of Music at Florida A&M University and at Polk State College. Owens founded the Dr. J. Owens Academy of Fine Arts in 2012, which also includes the Owens Academy Young Artists. She is also the Artistic Director and Founder of the Sankofa Chorale: a musical group that sings various genres of music as they support and embrace African American culture as an extension of the African Diaspora.

Stafford, a Winter Haven native, joined his high-school friends, songwriter Bobby Braddock, Kent LaVoie, and Gram Parsons (of the Byrds) to form a band, each member of this little "garage band" going on to national success in the music business. Stafford wrote and recorded his first chart-making song, The Swamp Witch, and followed it with a gold single, Spiders and Snakes, which stayed on the American pop charts for 26 weeks. The hits just kept coming, including the wonderfully satirical Cow Patti, written for the Clint Eastwood movie, Any Which Way You Can. Stafford also starred in his own television show (The Jim Stafford Show) and was a regular performer on the Tonight Show and the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

Young, a Polk County resident for 74 years, has been the Preservation Manager at the Polk History Center for nearly 14 years. During her tenure, she has reorganized the Polk County Historical Commission, spearheaded the Polk Historical Marker Program, and worked with Polk County’s Planning Division to establish the Historical Preservation Ordinance. Young's work with the History Center includes her implementation of best practices to earn the American Alliance of Museums Accreditation. Additionally, she has collaborated on historical and cultural initiatives such as “Sesquicentennial 2011,” a county-wide celebration to commemorate Polk’s 150th anniversary, the History and Heritage Guide to Polk County, and the Citrus Crate Label Tour.

The inductees will be recognized at the inaugural Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame Gala at Nora Mayo Hall in Winter Haven on October 15. The event, sponsored by CORE Wealth Advisors, will also recognize local arts individuals and organizations via a series of annual awards. Tickets are available at polkarts.org.

Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame Gala

October 15 at Nora Mayo Hall in Winter Haven

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, the Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame Induction ceremony is set for October 15 at Nora Mayo Hall in Winter Haven. This ticketed event will once again recognize notable Polk Countians who are worthy of the lifetime honor of induction into the Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame.

Dr. Daryl Ward, the Executive Director of PACA, was ecstatic about the reception of last year’s hall of fame ceremony. “We heard wonderful compliments and got really positive feedback,” he said. “It affirmed how our community really wants to celebrate arts and culture.” This year’s event, like last year’s, will feature a catered dinner, live music, local art, with the highlight of the night being special recognition of the arts and cultural community.

A reimagining of the former Community Arts Recognition Program, the annual Polk Arts & Culture Awards will once again highlight the work of the arts and cultural sector here in Polk. “It’s really important to recognize and honor the hard work that our arts organizations and arts supporters do for our community,” Ward said. The awards are separated into six categories: Volunteer of the Year, Philanthropic Organization of the Year, Arts/Cultural Organization of the Year, the Rising Star award, the Art for Good award, and the Arts Educator of the Year award. The finalists have already been named (see graphic on the right) and the winners will be announced the night of the Gala.

One notable addition to this year’s event is “The Best of Polk Art Exhibit.” In collaboration with the Ridge Art Association, PACA will host a juried art exhibit that will open the night of the Gala and will then move to the Polk History Center. This show was created to showcase the diverse and amazing work of Polk’s visual artists and all of the work will be for sale to guests of the Gala! More info can be found at polkarts.orts.org/bestofpolk

The Hall of Fame Induction ceremony will be the crowning event of the evening. This year’s class (see preceding page) will feature five individuals who have all made their mark on Polk County and beyond. The Gala, which kicks off at 6pm with a social hour, is open to the public and tickets can be purchased at polkarts.org. There is a $10 discount for PACA members and those interested in purchasing at table or other sponsor opportunity should contact Ward at director@polkarts.org.

Leading From the HeART

An occasional series profiling Polk’s leaders whose commitment and passion for the arts infuses their work and service to the community. This issue’s profile is Pam Page, Deputy Director for the City of Lakeland’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department! We caught up with her and asked her a few questions.

Q.1 - Please describe your personal background: Where were you born? Where did you grow up? What brought you to Polk County? Feel free to talk about your family…

It all started for me in Honolulu Hawaii. I was a Navy brat. After my dad completed his service, the family returned to Minneapolis so he could complete his degree at the University of Minnesota. Subsequently, our family took the corporate ladder tour of the United States. We lived in California, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Florida before settling in Connecticut. Our family of five visited most national parks and states before we graduated from high school.

Education was pivotal in our family and the Page sisters were fortunate to have outstanding educational opportunities. Equally important was the integration of the arts in the fabric of our education. Growing up in a bedroom community of New York City, we breathed live theater, musical performances, museum openings, and dance. My first solo trip to the city was to my favorite museum, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. My allowance covered the entry fee to see a Beatrix Potter illustration exhibit.

Polk County became home almost forty years ago when a recruiting offer lured our young family to Lakeland. A long way from Connecticut and our families, we began our assimilation into the southern lifestyle and culture.

Q.2 - What has been your professional path? How long have worked for the City of Lakeland?

With a Master of Landscape Architecture, my career path started in Hartford Connecticut with a small boutique landscape architecture firm. There we learned to navigate the business world of finance, development regulations and finagle our artistic talents to creatively attain client goals. After four years, a calling to downtown Philadelphia with a multidisciplinary planning and design firm composed of architects, landscape architects and planners, further honed my career.

With the move to Lakeland my professional career shifted to being a mom of two boys and a community volunteer. In 2002, the City of Lakeland took a chance and hired this transformed Yankee as Park Planner for the Parks & Recreation Department. Over the years my role evolved to the current position of Deputy Director of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts.

Q.3 - What are some of your dreams/visions for Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts? Explain how/why the city decided to rename and reposition Parks & Rec into Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts. What do you see are challenges for PR&CA department?

Dreaming and visioning for Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts is easy, actualizing those dreams and visions requires funding. Sustaining the current level of service for the department will be difficult within the existing city budget. Funding now provides for minimal maintenance of existing resources with only partial funding through impact fee collection for new facilities to accommodate growth. Neither budget is adequate to sustain current or future recreational amenities in a growing community. Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts was renamed to be an inclusive representation of department functions. Public art, sculpture competitions, juried art exhibitions, musical performances, live theater, literary, historical, dance and painting programs have long been part of our department. Our arts emphasis over the years was shadowed by sports. Changing the department name recognized that we do much more than bounce or throw balls.

Q.4 - What artistic pursuits do you enjoy (and collecting art counts)? Talk about your favorite art experiences (creating them or watching/ experiencing them).

Images of the natural and the built environment and the interplay between the two are on my walls, in my books, and in my mind. The juxtaposition of the two is an opportunity to be pleasing or jarring.

Designing a park or recreational amenity starts in my mind, influenced by places traveled, inspired by the natural environment, and finally figuring out how to set it in a modern context for sustainability and viability. Step one is to determine the need, step two is to design it, step three is to redesign it to fit the budget and step four is to have it built with the funds available!

Q.5 - How do you think your training informs your work as a leader?

Leaders listen, invite participation, push boundaries, encourage improvement and empower new leaders. A true leader is an artist that challenges their group to perform.

Okay, now it’s the Lightning Round:

1. Who is your favorite artist? What appeals to you about them and their work?

Joe Bonamassa is my favorite musician…experience of a lifetime, Row 9 center stage, as he recorded “Time Clocks” live from Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado.

2. Is there another municipality (doesn’t have to be in Florida) whose approach to Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts you admire?

Not a municipality but my admiration for the National Parks Service is immeasurable. The folks that dedicate, protect and enhance our natural and manmade American wonders celebrate our heritage while preserving it for generations. I leave every National Park in awe.

3. What do you think is the City of Lakeland’s “best kept secret?”

The entire City of Lakeland is accredited as an arboretum by ArbNet, The Interactive Community of Arboreta. The city has the largest and most diversified collection of plants in Central Florida.

Pam Page, Deputy Director for the City of Lakeland's Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department.

Austin Snedden, the studio’s manager, brings valued experience and enthusiasm which assures this studio to be an enjoyable and creative place for artists and students. If you are interested in receiving more information, snap the QR code (right) from your smart phone or email Austin at his email address, austinsneddenceramics@gmail.com.

NEW CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS

will start late this November during day and evening hours. Classes include drawing, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, fluid and resin art, oil painting, and polymer clay. For a full list of classes, go to our website, www.ridgeart.org. Sharon Creedon (right) is our class coordinator.

OUR GIFT SHOP MANAGER (left) Marion Barnes has added new art from RAA artist members which include Sandra Femino (paper making), Sue Presley (mixed media) and Heather Earl (photography). The gift shop is open one hour before Theatre WH performances. If you are interested in selling your art here, contact Marion Barnes at mim26@snet.net.

WE ARE ADDING A NEW GALLERY. Once open, this gallery can be reserved by members and the community to show their art. Christy Hemenway, R AA’s Exhibitions Director, has had this vision for a long time: “ Our community needs a gallery where an artist can have a single show where they can display and sell their art.” The shows can include receptions and will be open during Theatre Winter Haven productions. Watch for details on our website.

BARTOW MAYOR'S ART CLUB 2024 ARTWORKS

On May 6, 2024, the City of Bartow recognized student artists for the sixth year through the Mayor’s Art Club, originally established by a resolution on April 20, 2015. The purpose of this program is to give Bartow student artists an opportunity to publicly showcase their talents as well as beautify public facilities through healthy competition. Bartow middle and high school student artists are eligible to compete for membership in the Mayor’s Art Club. Student artwork is entered into the competition with the assistance of their school art teachers. Student entries are evaluated by an Art Review Committee that select sstudent artists whose work qualifies them for this honor. This year, they received 82 submissions. Bartow Regional Hospital has partnered with the Mayor's Art Club to add 12 pieces to their collection. Seven of this year's entries are displayed above.

When you renew your tag this year, support the arts in Polk County by choosing a Florida State of the Arts license plate. Arts tag patrons may claim a $20 tax deduction for their charitable donation. Learn more at www.polktaxes.com and PolkArts.org
