Message from the Executive Director

If you’re an engaged arts supporter, then you know these are difficult times for arts and cultural organizations and artists. Whether it’s funding issues on the national level or concerns over the state budget’s allotment for arts and culture, it seems that support for the arts is on the wane. I want to emphatically tell you, however, that that is not the case. Regardless of political affiliation, people understand the value that arts and cultural experiences bring to the quality of life of a community. No one wants to have no live theater, no museums, no music, no movies, no visual art, etc.! The question then, is how do we show the extent to which we value these experiencess?

My first response is to that question is to simply show up – attend a concert, go see a play, visit a museum, go to an exhibit opening. Our local arts and cultural organizations need to know they are important to us and by visiting, attending, and promoting these opportunities, we honor their work and their contributions to our communities. In addition to perhaps providing them revenue through ticket sales, by making our presence known at local arts and cultural events, we also send a message to our elected officials and local policymakers that the arts matter.

Speaking of elected officials, another way to show how much we value arts and cultural experiences is to have direct conversations with our elected officials. This can be via official channels (email, social media, etc.) or it can be through personal conversations with them. I find that direct person-to-person communication, when possible, goes a long way to explaining why the arts are so important to our local economies and our local quality of life. And to be honest, I’ve yet to meet an elected official who disagrees with me about that fact. We may have differing opinions about how to best support (re: fund) arts and culture, but I’ve found common ground in recognizing the importance of these experiences for our community well-being.

Finally, consider making a deeper commitment by sponsoring or donating (money or in-kind services) to local arts organizations. If you’re unsure how to do that or where your funds might make the most difference, please reach out to me (director@polkarts. org) and we can discuss how your financial support can best be placed for maximum impact to our local arts and cultural organizations.

I end with a phrase that I frequently use in my capacity as PACA’s Executive Director: Stop buying art at Wal-Mart! This isn’t a shot against retail chains as much as it’s a clarion call to support our local artists by purchasing art from them. Again, reach out if you’d like to be connected to a local artist.

Let’s work together to keep Polk County the heART of Central Florida!

Dixieland Markets Celebrate Local Artists

Tucked away in the heart of Lakeland’s beloved Historic Dixieland Neighborhood, two magical market experiences are bringing the community together through art, food, fashion, and music.

On Second Fridays, the Dixieland Night Market transforms the neighborhood into a glowing hub of creativity and excitement. From 6pm to 11pm, local artists and artisans line the streets, offering everything from handcrafted goods to gourmet bites. The atmosphere buzzes with energy under the string lights, while live performances at hotspots like Union Hall and The Pink Piano add a soulful soundtrack to the evening. It’s a perfect blend of nightlife and neighborhood charm.

For these seeking a more laid-back vibe, the Dixieland Mid-

Day Market welcomes visitors on the 1st and 3rd Sundays from 10am to 3pm. This daytime event offers a slower pace, ideal for sipping locally-roasted coffee, browsing vintage treasures, and reconnecting with the community. It's a breath of fresh air before the new week begins.

Both markets are hosted by Emporium Lakeland. Whether you're a longtime Lakelander or just passing through, these vibrant markets are a must-visit celebration of all things local.

POLK COUNTY HISTORY CENTER REOPENS SUMMER 2025

The Polk County History Center will reopen to the public for tours this summer, following the restoration of more than 200 exterior-facing windows, including those on the iconic dome of the Historic Polk County Courthouse. The center had been closed since April for the project.

Constructed in 1908 with additions made in 1926, the neoclassical designed building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Preservation and Restoration

The window restoration project was performed in alignment with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The goal of the project was to preserve the original materials, features, finishes and construction techniques of each window and where necessary, repair deteriorated historic features to match the old in design, color, texture, and materials.

Funds for the restoration were provided by the Department of State, Division of Historical Resources of the State of Florida, and Polk County Government.

Hidden History

The restoration process involved the expertise of skilled craftsmen and architects and revealed more than one quirk about the building, the difference between the western and eastern facing windows. The bank of windows to the west are framed in wood, double hung with a single sash and have two panes of glass, whereas the eastern facing windows have a metal frame, double-hung design with a single sash and eight divided panes—a subtle yet significant distinction.

What’s New

Betsye Kay Finch Scholarship

Xander Allen, 18, a singer, actor, dancer and 2025 graduate of Harrison School for the Arts, has won the Betsye Kay Finch Performing Arts Foundation scholarship of $3,500. Xander has performed in numerous musicals at Harrison School for the Arts including Shrek the Musical, Cinderella, West Side Story, and Elf, Jr. He also sang and danced in Newsies with The Missing Piece Theatre Company, and directed and choreographed several musicals.

Xander’s passion for musical theatre was sparked at age five when he performed in Little Drummer Boy at Grace Church in Lakeland where his mother, Tara, was a worship pastor. Since then, his life has been driven by song, music and dance. In 2024, Tampa’s renowned Straz Center for the Performing Arts awarded Xander a Top 12 Best Performer of the Year for his work in the Straz Broadway Star of the Future program.

Xander and his family and friends were feted at the Betsye Kay Finch Performing Arts Foundation’s annual awards ceremony in Lakeland’s Hollis Garden on May 2. Looking forward to honing his performance skills, Xander plans to pursue a BFA in Musical Theatre at the University of Central Florida in Orlando this fall.

Helping aspiring musical theatre students realize their dreams was the aim of dance teacher Betsye Kay Finch, of Lakeland, who taught jazz, ballet and modern dance at Betsye Kay’s School of Dance for three decades. She also performed in local musicals and helped fundraise for the arts. Ms. Finch passed away at age 92 in 2019. Aiming to keep her mother’s joy of musical theatre alive, Ms. Finch’s daughter, Alexis Rocker, launched the BKF Performing Arts Foundation, Inc. in Lakeland, which awards annual scholarships to Polk County high school seniors planning to pursue a degree in musical theatre or dance. Driving Creativity: Polk County’s Kids Tag Art Turns Student Designs Into Real-World Impact

Bright colors, big imaginations, and bumper-to-bumper inspiration—this year’s Kids Tag Art program in Polk County has wrapped up its 19th year with record-breaking success, and the excitement is as vibrant as the student-created license plates themselves.

Founded by Polk County Tax Collector Joe G. Tedder, Kids Tag Art (KTA) is more than just a fundraiser. It’s a celebration of creativity, a lifeline for arts education, and a powerful lesson in how the government can positively impact the next generation. Fifthgrade students across Polk County get the unique opportunity to design custom vanity license plates as part of their classroom curriculum—an artistic assignment with real-world visibility.

Tedder shares, “We want Kids Tag Art to be a positive outreach to young people early on and to set a friendly foundation for government and what we do in the Tax Collector’s Office.”

The specialty tags, which are available to the public at www. KidsTagArt.com, aren’t just charming keepsakes—they’re a way for the community to directly support elementary art programs. Proceeds from each tag go right back into the classroom, helping fund essential supplies and creative resources for teachers. Thanks to generous sponsors like Southern Homes of Polk County, LEGOLAND Florida Resort, and many others, additional support is also awarded to participating schools.

The impact is tangible. This year’s edition of the program featured a traveling exhibit of award-winning tag designs, including stops

at the Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art at Florida Southern College and various Tax Collector Service Centers. The initiative culminated in a heartwarming Awards of Distinction (AOD) Ceremony at Branscomb Memorial Auditorium in Lakeland, where standout students from each school were honored for their work.

Among them was Cloey Ingram of Spook Hill Elementary, who received the prestigious Tax Collector’s Choice Award for her citrus-inspired design. “I was moved by Cloey’s design and the vivid colors which brought to mind the history of Polk County as the citrus capital of Florida,” Tedder shared.

The program’s momentum shows no signs of slowing. With nearly two decades of empowering young creatives and raising funds for the arts, Kids Tag Art proves what happens when passion, public service, and community come together.

Whether you're looking for a meaningful way to support the arts or simply want to add a pop of personality to your license plate, one of these mini-masterpieces might be your next great find.

Support creativity on wheels—visit www.KidsTagArt.com to browse and buy.

Artist Spotlight: Lyle Smith

For Lyle Smith, art has always been a part of his life. His passion for painting began early, watching his mother bring her own artistic visions to life through drawing and painting. That early inspiration set the stage for a lifelong journey of creativity.

Lyle’s career as an artist took shape in 1988, after studying under renowned oil painter Lloyd Cogley in Klamath Falls, Oregon. His training helped refine his techniques and deepen his understanding of artistic expression. Though his professional background was in pharmacy, his heart has always belonged to the canvas.

Born in Chariton, Iowa, Lyle also served four years in the U.S. Air Force before pursuing his career. But after retirement, he fully embraced his passion for painting, becoming an integral part of the Florida Wildflower Studios community. For the past seven years, he has been a resident artist and watercolor instructor at the Frostproof-based studio, inspiring others with his talent and love for the craft.

Lyle’s motto—“Art is an adventure where learning never ends”—perfectly captures his approach to creativity. He sees painting as an evolving process, one that constantly challenges and enriches both the artist and the viewer. His work continues to be showcased at Florida Wildflower Studios, where he shares his vision with fellow artists and art enthusiasts alike.

Through his dedication to the arts, Lyle Smith exemplifies the joy of lifelong learning and the beauty of storytelling through paint. His presence at Florida Wildflower Studios serves as an inspiration to all who cross his path, proving that creativity knows no bounds.

The LAA Annual Fine Art Exhibition at FSC's Melvin Gallery Do

You Know Its

History?

Since the Lakeland Arts Association’s (formerly the Lakeland Art Guild) Fine Arts Exhibition began in 1972, the LAA has sponsored an annual exhibition at Florida Southern College Melvin Gallery. The association of the LAA with FSC for the annual exhibition goes back to 1972. Under the Lakeland Art Guild leadership of Chryssie Taverides, John Streetman, director of the Polk Museum of Art, initiated the annual Lakeland Art Guild Fine Art Exhibition. As a professionally juried and judged exhibition, monetary awards were established to support the exhibit.

By 1975 the Lakeland Art Guild needed a new venue for their annual juried exhibitions. Floyd Bombard, then LAG president, agreed that Mary Lou Hartweg would discuss the possibility of holding it at the Florida Southern College Melvin Gallery with Dr. Donna Stoddard, chair of the college’s art department. The Lakeland Art Guild was awarded a March date on a probationary status for three years. If the shows were successful, the LAG Fine Art Exhibition would become part of the FSC Festival of Fine Arts, which it did. Upon Dr. Stoddard’s retirement, the LAG held the annual March exhibition under the auspices of Downing Barnitz. Upon his retirement, newly named chair, Dr. Hiames Rogers moved the date from March to three weeks in May. The exhibition continues today albeit scheduled for later in the summer.

The LAA 53rd Annual Fine Arts Exhibition at FSC Melvin Gallery is coming up with an Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony Friday, June 26, 6–8pm. The exhibition will hang through July 27. Artists will compete for an award package of $3,000. The judge, Richard D. Colvin, Executive Director of the Leesburg Center for the Arts, will deliver remarks about the award-winning pieces at 1:30pm on Thursday, June 19 at the Melvin Gallery.

The history of the Lakeland Arts Association goes back to the 1950s. The trio of founders included Mary Carter, Winnie Shelheimer and Murray Goldsborough who brought the guild to life in 1952, naming their organization the Lakeland Art Guild. In 1956 the guild was incorporated, a logo created, and the Lakeland Art Guild became official. The Lakeland Art Guild enjoys a rich history spanning their days at Tigertown at Joker Marchant stadium to today. In 2022, the Lakeland Art Guild rebranded itself as the Lakeland Arts Association with a new logo reflecting a diverse community of creatives. The Lakeland Arts Association is one of Polk County’s oldest and most prestigious arts organizations.
