Hello Arts and Culture friends and supporters,
I am delighted to greet you in this issue of Artifacts as the Interim Executive Director of the Polk Arts and Cultural Alliance—affectionately known as PACA. I stepped into this role in mid March, and my primary goal is to ensure that the projects and initiatives set in motion by the Board of Directors and Dr. Daryl Ward, immediate past Executive Director, continue to move forward and reach their fullest potential.
Over the past several weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of representing PACA with Polk Vision, the Lakeland Mayor’s Art Council, Bartow’s Mayor’s Art Club, and the Arts and Cultural Committee (ACC) of the Tourist Development Council. With the invaluable support of Jordan Weiland, PACA’s Arts Program and Marketing Coordinator, we are working on your behalf as Polk County’s designated local arts agency.
We are currently advancing several exciting projects, including:
• Polk County Arts and Culture Economic Impact Study — Conducted in partnership with professors at Florida Southern College, the survey portion was completed in May and a full report will be available in the fall.
• The Polk Arts Guide — Our annual publication featuring a listing of arts and cultural organizations and businesses will be released in July.
• Arts in Transit — Summer programming will expand to include dance and theatre. Look for us at a bus stop near you.
• Art in Public Spaces — This initiative brings student artwork into municipal buildings across Polk County, with the first installation planned for late summer.
• The PACA Hall of Fame and Awards Gala — Mark your calendars for October 6, 2026, at Lake Eva in Haines City. This will be a night to celebrate artists, arts educators, and arts supporters— you won’t want to miss your chance to be part of it.
At our core, PACA believes that the arts are not a luxury—they are a fundamental expression of who we are as individuals and as a community. When we talk about the importance of the arts, we are really

talking about the health, identity, and future of our society. The arts capture the emotions, struggles, and triumphs that define communities and generations, and they remain one of the most powerful ways to reflect who we are.
In a world that can feel increasingly divided, shared artistic experiences bring people together. Whether attending a live performance, viewing an exhibit, or participating in a community arts event, these moments create connection and belonging. Through the arts, we gain the ability to see the world through someone else’s eyes—an essential step toward building stronger, more compassionate communities.
We want you to feel that you have a place with us as we work to ensure that Polk County’s arts and culture remain a vibrant part of who we are. In the near future, you will receive information about how you can become an affiliate of the Polk Arts and Cultural Alliance as we continue to grow into an organization that cultivates an environment where the arts can flourish.
For biweekly arts event updates, please visit polkarts.org to sign up for our ArtBeat newsletter and follow us on social media.
As you continue to support local arts businesses and events, you are investing in the vitality of our communities. I look forward to seeing you soon at a local

Florida Dance Theatre set itself apart in elevating talent in Polk County, serving as its only professional dance company for 31 years. Yet when state-wide funding cuts led to a significant budget loss, Florida Dance Theatre bid farewell to its community in June of 2025.
In light of the company's discouraging end, the question arises: How can dance stay alive in Polk County? It may begin with just a simple action.
When Khiem Nguyen first moved to Lakeland, he hoped to find a community that he could dance with. With the help of a friend who owned a swing dance shop, Nguyen held his first LKLD Lindy Hop class one Monday night. The only advertisement? A sign hung outside the store. To Nguyen's surprise, a new student came by that night - a passerby whose interest was sparked by that sign. Soon, the turnout multiplied.
Krystal Huot with Swan City Ballet had a similar experience. She didn't know what to expect when she opened an adult ballet class, but the opening filled up very quickly. Since then, she has noticed a diverse demographic that she had never envisioned. Those who join her class encompass a vast range of ages, from the younger couples who are looking for a fun activity, to the older adults whom Huot likes to call "my silver swans".
Though trying a new hobby like dance can be a nervous experience, the dance community in Polk County is united by the inviting atmosphere that instructors create. Newcomers are greeted by a nonjudgemental space. "It's all about connection," Nguyen commented, "When we see a new face come through the door, we make them feel welcome."
Polk county offers an array of dance studios and programs for young individuals. A student's first step outside of their comfort zone can empower them to keep dance alive.
Hailing from Auburndale, the young dancer Chloe Walker has become a highly-esteemed figure in the local arts community, serving as a model for keeping dance alive. Her platform "Chloe's Creative Moves" is dedicated to making dance accessible for marginalized children. The courage that Walker has demonstrated reflects students' power to promote dance.
"I think dance students can keep the art alive in Polk County by performing wherever they can," she noted, "Recitals and dance competitions are amazing, but by performing at events outside of the dance community, you are able to share your love of the art and spark interest in people who may not be exposed to dance on a regular basis." By performing at community events in the City of Auburndale, she has had the opportunity to share her passion for the art.
The closing of Florida Dance Theatre may have led to uncertainty about the future of dance in Polk County, but the thriving dance community promises to keep the tradition alive. The bold steps of instructors and students alike encourages the sustaining of this art form. Whether it's through participating in dance or by buying a ticket to a local dance performance, you too can help keep dance alive.

Karla Pirona is a figurative oil painter based in Florida whose work serves as a bridge between cultural inheritance and contemporary experience. She is the pioneer of Venezuelan Neorealism, a pictorial movement rooted in the psychological depth of mestizaje and the diasporic experience, which explores how identities are formed at the intersection of history, geography, and time.
Originally trained as a chemical engineer, Pirona brings a structural and analytical sensibility to the canvas. This background informs her “language of truth”—a practice where technical precision meets emotional resonance. Her work moves between observation and construction, utilizing multiple layers of oil and glazing to create atmospheres that honor both the urban landscape and the human spirit.
Pirona’s practice is deeply informed by her role as a mother of four. Her experience navigating the complexities of a child with profound neurological and metabolic conditions has significantly shaped her perception of human fragility, endurance, and vulnerability. These themes quietly permeate her subjects, transforming intimate portraits and panoramic cityscapes into spaces of “emotional presence” and historical honor.
A self-taught artist with a global reach, Pirona’s work has been exhibited across the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. She has gained recognition across Florida in Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota, Lakeland, and Fort Myers. Additionally, she has participated in major juried exhibitions

throughout the United States, including New York, Virginia, Alabama, California, Georgia, and Texas. Internationally, her work has been presented in Spain, Italy, Taiwan, Venezuela, and soon in China, through platforms such as Figurativas at the Museu Europeu d’Art Modern (MEAM) in Barcelona, ModPortrait in Madrid, the Almenara Collection in Córdoba, Palacio de Losada in Zamora, Artemida Art Week in Milan, as well as Galería Artelibre at the Hsinchu Gallery Museum in Taipei (Taiwan), Illuminate Art Gallery in Hong Kong (China), and the Agrupación Artística Aragonesa in Zaragoza (Spain).
She is a member of the American Artist Professional League (AAPL), the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society (NOAPS), the Lakeland Art Association (LAA), the Portrait Society of America, the Polk County Arts & Cultural Alliance (PACA), the Bartow Art Guild, and is a charter member of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino.
Currently residing in Lakeland, Florida, her work is held in numerous public venues and private collections, continuing to document the evolution of place and identity through the lens of Narrative Realism.
View Karla Pirona's exhibit Cityscapes and Realism on view at Bartow Art Guild’s Momentum Gallery Aug 1-29, with an opening reception and Meet the Artist event on Aug 10 from 6-8pm.

Polk County’s arts scene has always been rich with talent, but for many emerging and unconventional artists, finding a place to belong hasn’t always been easy. That gap—felt deeply by those trying to carve out space for themselves—sparked the creation of SPACE Art Collective, a grassroots movement led by Polk County native Sara Jones, whose determination, humor, and community-driven vision have quickly made SPACE one of the most exciting new forces in the region’s creative landscape.
Jones grew up in Polk County watching galleries open and close, muralists fight for legitimacy, and artists who didn’t fit traditional molds struggle
to find opportunities. Her own journey included two years as a resident artist and volunteer venue manager at ART/ifact Studios in Lakeland, where she produced shows, festivals, and fundraisers—work that helped bring more artists into the fold and strengthened the creative community.
When ART/ifact closed, Jones felt a renewed urgency to create something more flexible, resilient, and inclusive. “My reaction, like many great women before me, was to fulfill a community need out of sheer spite for the experiences I’d had firsthand,” she jokes. That spark became SPACE: a collective built not around a single building, but around partnerships.
Instead of relying on one venue, SPACE collaborates with local businesses to host pop-up exhibitions, art swaps, concerts, and creative meetups. The result is a mutually beneficial ecosystem where artists gain visibility and businesses gain foot traffic and cultural energy.
SPACE’s mission is simple but ambitious: provide space for all artists, especially those who may feel overlooked or unsupported. Jones sees SPACE as a meeting point where artists and patrons of all backgrounds can connect, converse, and challenge each other through their work.
“You don’t have to like or agree with everyone’s art or experiences,” she
says. “But everyone deserves a chance to bring their discussions to the table.”
Polk County, she notes, is overflowing with creatives—filmmakers, sculptors, dancers, fashion designers, performers, and students from arts-focused schools. SPACE aims to help them find each other, collaborate, and grow.
While SPACE currently operates as a pop-up collective, Jones’s long-term vision is bold: a full-scale arts center offering residencies, classes, mental-health-focused expressive arts, a dual-purpose gallery and performance space, a café, grants for artists, and shared studios equipped for a wide range of mediums.
“It’s totally a pipe dream,” she admits, “but if I can dream it, I can one day build it.” She hopes that as SPACE grows, she’ll meet the people with the knowledge and skills to help bring that dream to life.
Since launching in March 2025, SPACE has experienced a remarkable
surge of activity and community engagement. In its first year, the collective organized a successful art swap at The Barter Box in Lakeland, produced The Big Bang exhibition featuring more than 40 Central Florida artists at Florida Southern College’s Melvin Art Gallery, and sponsored pop-ups at Art Crawl, Punk Flea Market, and the Rainbow Roots Festival. SPACE also hosted a multi-band concert at Hillcrest Coffee, networked with and platformed over 100 artists through events and bi-monthly meetups, and donated art supplies to Talbot House Ministries and Polk DSA. The collective also earned 3rd place for Best DIY Workshop/Studio in HAVEN/ LKLD Magazine’s 2025 “Best Of” issue—along with a feature spotlight in the magazine’s November edition. For a group barely a year old, the momentum is undeniable.
SPACE welcomes both artists and art lovers. Volunteers are always needed for pop-up events, and the collective is
actively seeking businesses willing to host art shows, concerts, figure-study nights, and creative meetups. Because renting venues is costly, partnerships with small businesses are essential— and mutually beneficial.
Those who want to support SPACE’s long-term goals can contribute to their GoFundMe: gofundme.com/f/spacesanctuary-for-polks-arts-culture-andeducation
SPACE hosts bi-monthly meetups, inviting artists to bring a project, hang out, and connect with others. New shows and events are in development, and updates are shared regularly on Instagram at @space.artcollective.
For Jones, the future of SPACE is wide open. What began as a response to seeing a community need has grown into a thriving, collaborative movement—one that’s redefining what community support for the arts can look like in Polk County.
And if the first year is any indication, SPACE is only getting started.
"YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIKE OR AGREE WITH EVERYONE’S ART OR EXPERIENCES, BUT EVERYONE DESERVES A CHANCE TO BRING THEIR DISCUSSIONS TO THE TABLE."

Frostproof’s arts community is entering a vibrant new era, thanks to the vision and energy of artist and instructor Alexa Berrong (pictured), the new owner of Studio Wildflower. Though the name on the door has changed, the heart of this beloved creative space continues to beat with the same spirit of welcome, inspiration, and community that has defined it since its founding.
Originally from Hartwell, Georgia, Berrong’s path to Frostproof was anything but predictable. She describes herself as someone who has been creating art for as long as she could hold a pencil. That early spark grew into a lifelong passion, eventually guiding her toward oil painting and teaching.
Before arriving in Polk County, Berrong worked as a welder in New Smyrna Beach. She moved to Frostproof on April 1, 2023, and exactly three years later, she stepped into ownership of the studio that had become her creative home.
“I’ve felt drawn to art for as long as I can remember,” she says. “My work explores interconnection and the invisible
threads that bind us all together. As steward of the studio, I want to create a space where people can reconnect with their creativity and feel encouraged to express it freely.”
Studio Wildflower may be entering a new era, but its roots run deep. The gallery was founded in 2017 by Jacque Palomaki and Chip Newton as Florida Wildflower Studios, a place where artists could gather, learn, and feel supported. Berrong spent roughly two and a half years there as a resident artist before taking the reins. Her decision to rename the space was thoughtful and intentional.
“‘Studio Wildflower’ felt like a natural transition,” she explains. “I wanted to honor what Jacque and Chip created while allowing room for new ideas and new energy. The heart remains the same.”
Along with the new name, Berrong is preparing a refreshed look for the interior. The studio traditionally closes each July, and this year she plans to use that time to repaint and remodel. When the doors reopen in August, visitors can expect a space that feels renewed yet familiar—an evolution rather than a departure. Despite the updates, many of the studio’s beloved offerings will continue unchanged. Studio Wildflower will maintain its robust schedule of classes and workshops, along with its accessible membership structure:
$40/year for adults
$25/year for students (18 & under)
$60/year for families (up to four people in the same household)
Members enjoy discounts on classes, opportunities to display and sell their work, and access to Open Studio every Wednesday, a cornerstone of the studio’s community-building efforts. Berrong’s goals for Studio Wildflower center on connection—between people, between ideas, and between individuals and their own creative instincts.
“I want people to walk through the door and feel like art is something they belong in,” she says. “Not something out of reach.”
Her vision includes expanding classes and workshops, offering more opportunities for local artists to share their work, and cultivating a space where creativity feels accessible to everyone, regardless of experience.
“Ultimately, my goal is to nurture the creative spirit in others and inspire people to follow what lights them up.”
Berrong speaks with deep gratitude for the foundation laid by Palomaki and Newton, and she sees her role as both caretaker and innovator.

“It is an honor to build upon the space Jacque and Chip so thoughtfully created,” she says. “Studio Wildflower will continue to be a place for learning, connection, and creative exploration, while expanding into new offerings that reflect my own artistic voice and vision.”
As Studio Wildflower enters this new chapter, one thing is clear: Frostproof’s creative community is in good hands. With Berrong’s passion, artistry, and commitment to nurturing others, the studio is poised to flourish—rooted in its past, blooming toward its future.

On May 4, 2026, City of Bartow Mayor Tanya Tucker proudly recognized ten outstanding student artists from Bartow High School, Bartow Middle School, Summerlin Academy and Union Academy Magnet School as part of the 8th Annual Mayor’s Art Club celebration. What began with a City Commission resolution in 2015, has grown into a beloved tradition that uplifts young creatives and brings student artwork into the heart of the community.
The Mayor’s Art Club was established with a clear purpose: to give Bartow’s middle and high school artists a public platform to showcase their talents while beautifying civic spaces through healthy artistic competition. This year, 68 submissions were received—an impressive testament to the creativity thriving in Bartow’s schools. From these submissions, thirteen artworks were selected for public display at Bartow City Hall and Bartow Regional Hospital, where residents and visitors can enjoy the students’ creativity year-round.
This program thrives thanks to the dedication of Bartow’s art educators, including Ms. Julie TerHaar of Bartow High School/Summerlin, Ms. Alana Lewis of Union Academy Magnet School, and Mrs. Jessica Rothbard of Bartow Middle School, who encouraged their students, guided their submissions, and helped make this year’s showcase possible.
The Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance was honored to support the celebration by gifting $50 Visa gift cards to each selected student artist. The Bartow Mayor's Art Club also extends its gratitude to Mike Patel at The UPS Store for generously enlarging and printing the artwork for display.
As the Mayor’s Art Club enters its ninth year, it continues to shine as a model of community pride—celebrating young artists, enriching public spaces, and strengthening the cultural fabric of Bartow.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING STUDENTS:
Satiah Moore, Bartow High School
Peyton Pawley, Bartow High School
Lilly Price, Bartow High School
Jailyn Spalding, Bartow High School
Nyasia Baker, Bartow Middle School
Shalimar Gonzalez, Bartow Middle School

This February, the Polk County History Center—working in partnership with Polk County Public Schools—welcomed students in grades 6 through 12 for the annual Polk County History Day competition. Now in its 27th year, the event continues to inspire young historians to dive deep into the past through rigorous, project-based research.
Each year, Polk County History Day aligns with the theme established by the national program. For 2026, students explored “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History,” a topic that challenged them to examine transformative moments and the ripple effects they create across societies. Whether investigating political movements, scientific breakthroughs, cultural shifts, or social justice milestones, students were encouraged to analyze how change begins—and how communities respond.
Participants presented their findings through a variety of creative and scholarly formats, including exhibits, documentaries, performances, papers, and websites. Every project was grounded in research, demonstrating not only historical understanding but also the ability to communicate complex ideas in compelling ways.
This year’s competition showcased the dedication of educators and the impressive talent of students from schools across the county, including those enrolled in International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. Students who
placed first or second advanced to Florida History Day in Tallahassee, where the winning exhibits represented Polk County at the state level—and may go on to compete at the National History Day contest later this summer.

As Polk County History Day celebrates more than a quarter-century of academic excellence, it remains a testament to the curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking of the county’s students—and to the educators and community partners who champion their success year after year.
