Welcome to this issue of Art-i-facts! As the incoming Executive Director of the Polk Arts and Cultural Alliance, I am delighted to begin this new chapter alongside a community whose passion for arts and culture is as inspiring as it is welcoming. What a joy it is to step into a story already rich with creativity, collaboration and community spirit. For more than three decades, I have had the privilege of working with artists, arts organizations, businesses, educators, philanthropists and civic leaders in communities throughout Florida and across America. That journey has reaffirmed one enduring truth: the arts are among a community’s greatest strengths. Arts and culture inspire innovation, preserve our shared heritage, strengthen local economies, enrich education, attract visitors and bring people together across generations and backgrounds. Those beliefs are what drew me to Polk County. A vibrant place with extraordinary cultural assets, passionate organizations, talented artists, and tremendous opportunity, Polk County is uniquely positioned in the heART of Central Florida and I am excited to work shoulder-to-shoulder with you to continue elevating our community as a true destination for the arts. My sincere gratitude to the Polk Arts and Cultural Alliance Board of Directors and President Michell Githens for their confidence in me. Special thanks to Interim Executive Director Beth Cummings and to Arts Program and Marketing Coordinator Jordan Weiland, for their steady guidance during this transition. Leading the Next Generation of Artists THE IMPORTANCE OF POLK COUNTY’S PUBLIC ARTS SCHOOLS
When people think about the arts in Polk County, they often think of the performers on stage, the musicians in concert halls, the visual artists filling galleries, and the cultural organizations that enrich our community. Yet behind every successful artist is a teacher who inspired them and a school leader who created an environment where creativity could flourish. Across Polk County, four public arts schools are dedicated to nurturing the talents, confidence, and character of young people. At the helm of these institutions are principals whose leadership helps shape not only academic success, but also the artistic journeys of thousands of students. Today, Art-i-facts magazine is proud to recognize the leaders guiding Polk County's public arts schools: Alicia Hughes of Davenport School of the Arts, Gian Monacelli of Harrison School for the Arts, Michael Sears of Jewett School of the Arts, and Maude Frazier of Rochelle School of the Arts. The value of arts education extends far beyond learning how to draw, dance, sing, perform, or play an instrument. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, research shows that arts education helps children and adolescents better manage their emotions, build resilience in the face of challenges, and develop tolerance and compassion for others. These skills are increasingly important as students navigate an everchanging world. The Florida Music Education Association echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that all students deserve equitable access to arts education, including dance,
media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts. The organization notes that arts instruction supports not only educational achievement, but also students' social and emotional well-being when taught by certified arts educators working alongside community arts partners. In Polk County, arts schools have become powerful examples of how academic excellence and creative expression can work hand in hand. Michael Sears: Jewett School of the Arts Under the leadership of Principal Michael Sears, Jewett School of the Arts has reached significant milestones. Sears' educational philosophy centers on the belief that every student can learn and succeed when given the right opportunities and support. Sears has been quoted saying, "My personal educational philosophy is based on the belief that every student has the capacity to learn if provided the proper stimulus, engaging instruction, and purpose-driven lessons within the classroom." That philosophy has translated into measurable success. In 2026, Jewett earned an "A" school grade for the first time in 13 years, a remarkable achievement that reflects the dedication of students, teachers, staff, and school leadership. Sears was also recognized as a finalist for Principal of the Year in 2025, highlighting his impact on the school community and educational excellence. Maude Frazier: Rochelle School of the Arts Principal Maude Frazier brings both experience and enthusiasm to Rochelle School of the Arts. Before assuming her current role, Frazier served as Assistant

Principal at Socrum Elementary School. She also holds a master's degree in educational leadership from the University of South Florida, providing a strong foundation for guiding one of Polk County's most respected artsfocused schools. As Rochelle continues its long tradition of artistic and academic excellence, Frazier's leadership will help ensure students are encouraged to explore their creativity while achieving success in the classroom. Gian Monacelli: Harrison School for the Arts Gian Monacelli, principal of Harrison School for the Arts, arrived at the position with extensive leadership experience within Polk County Public Schools. Prior to leading Harrison, Monacelli served as principal of Lakeland Highlands Middle School. His background in educational leadership provides valuable perspective as he oversees one of Florida's premier public arts schools, known for producing accomplished performers, visual artists, and creative professionals. "In an era of constant change, maintaining a focused vision while remaining relevant and responsive to the needs of our students, families and community is of utmost importance," Monacelli states. "I look forward to building on Harrison’s tradition of excellence and expanding opportunities for future generations of artists and scholars."
Alicia Hughes: Davenport School of the Arts Few leaders know a school community as well as Alicia Hughes knows Davenport School of the Arts. Before becoming principal, Hughes served as the school's assistant principal for 12 years, giving her deep insight into the school's culture, traditions, and commitment to student success. Her years of service provided a natural pathway to leadership and ensured continuity for students, families, and faculty. With a strong understanding of the school's mission, Hughes continues to foster an environment where artistic talent and academic achievement are equally celebrated. Public arts schools play a unique and vital role in Polk County. They provide students with opportunities to discover their talents, develop discipline, build confidence, and learn collaboration through creative expression. They also create pathways to careers in the arts while helping students become well-rounded citizens prepared to contribute to their communities. Their leadership reminds us that the future of the arts begins in the classroom, where creativity is nurtured, talent is developed, and young artists discover what is possible. Color Wave Mural Festival PAINTING AN ECONOMIC FUTURE FOR LAKELAND
This November 6-14, downtown Lakeland will become a living canvas as Color Wave, the city's first-ever mural festival, brings together 11 artists chosen from 438 applications representing 33 states and 21 countries. The inaugural event aims to do more than beautify buildings. Organizers Gillian Fazio and Katerina Santos hope it will create a lasting cultural asset that generates economic activity, attracts visitors, and strengthens Lakeland's identity as a destination for arts and creativity. At its core, Color Wave was founded on a simple but ambitious vision: to transform Lakeland into an open-air mural museum where world-class public art is accessible to everyone. Festival organizers believe art should be experienced beyond gallery walls and serve as a catalyst for community connection, civic pride, and economic opportunity. "We hope the festival inspires community pride, brings people together, supports local businesses, attracts visitors, and leaves behind a lasting collection of murals that continue to enrich the city long after the festival ends," organizers shared. Across the country, public art initiatives have become valuable tools for economic development. Murals help create memorable destinations, encourage walkability, and inspire residents and visitors to explore neighborhoods, restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues they may not otherwise visit. Fazio and Santos recognize this potential.
While 2026 marks the festival's debut year, they see the event as an investment in Lakeland's long-term creative economy. "Public art events have a proven track record of driving tourism, increasing foot traffic for local businesses, and creating long-term cultural and economic value," organizers explained. "Our hope is that Color Wave becomes a signature biennial event that continues to contribute to Lakeland's creative economy and identity as an arts destination." The economic benefits begin during the festival itself. Visitors coming downtown to watch artists at work will likely spend money at local restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, retail stores, and hotels. Beyond the nine-day event, the completed murals will remain as permanent attractions that can continue drawing visitors year-round. The festival is designed to activate downtown corridors, create cultural experiences accessible to all, and celebrate the unique character of Lakeland. Fazio and Santos describe the project as an opportunity to transform shared spaces into vibrant landmarks that inspire pride, connection, and dialogue. For residents, the murals will serve as new gathering points and visual landmarks. For visitors, they create a reason to explore downtown, take photos, share experiences online, and discover everything Lakeland has to offer. Another important aspect of Color Wave is its focus on

fostering future generations of artists. Festival organizers envision the event as a source of inspiration for emerging creatives who will be able to witness professional muralists transforming large-scale public spaces in real time. By making the creative process visible and accessible, the festival encourages young artists to imagine possibilities for their own futures while helping establish Lakeland as a place where creativity can thrive. As Color Wave prepares to debut this fall, organizers view this year as the beginning of a longer journey. The goal is not simply to create 11 murals, but to establish an event that becomes woven into Lakeland's cultural fabric for years to come.

Art in Public Spaces
BRINGING STUDENT CREATIVITY TO MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS ACROSS POLK COUNTY
What if a visit to City Hall, a parks and recreation office, or another public building became an opportunity to discover and celebrate local artistic talent? That vision is at the heart of the Art in Public Spaces program, a collaborative initiative led by the Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance and Polk Vision that is transforming everyday public spaces into galleries showcasing the creativity of Polk County's emerging artists. Designed to increase access to arts and cultural experiences in places where people may not traditionally expect to encounter them, Art in Public Spaces connects residents and visitors with local artwork while creating meaningful opportunities for student artists to gain recognition and exposure. The program's Student Art Showcase Initiative originated from an idea by Cody McGhee, Parks and
Recreation Supervisor for the City of Auburndale. McGhee envisioned a partnership among municipalities that would support local student artists by displaying their work in public buildings. The concept would not only enhance municipal spaces but also provide young artists with public recognition and financial support for their creative achievements. To bring the idea to life, organizers worked closely with Nancy Puri, Assistant Director of Fine Arts for Polk County Public Schools, to develop a process that aligned with the district's existing framework for evaluating and showcasing student artwork. By building upon a system already familiar to local art educators, the program was able to create a streamlined path for student submissions, jury review, and artwork selection. After receiving strong support during a countywide Parks and
Recreation meeting, four Polk County municipalities stepped forward to participate in the inaugural launch of the program: • City of Auburndale • City of Bartow • City of Haines City • City of Lake Wales These communities recognized the value of bringing art into public spaces and creating opportunities for residents to engage with local creativity in their daily lives. Artwork selected through the program is now on display in municipal facilities throughout these cities, allowing thousands of residents and visitors to experience studentcreated works as part of their regular interactions with local government and community services. The inaugural showcase features 16 selected student artists whose artworks were chosen for display through the

program's jury process. In recognition of their talent and contribution, each selected artist received an artist stipend, reinforcing the program's commitment to valuing creative work and supporting the next generation of artists. The selected pieces, submitted by local schools from Boone Middle School and Bartow Middle School, were reviewed by municipal representatives and community stakeholders before being chosen for exhibition. The artwork has been professionally matted, and framed for installation in participating municipal buildings. One of the most distinctive features of the Art in Public Spaces program is its countywide approach. Artwork displayed in a particular municipality is not limited to students who live in that community. Instead, the program intentionally introduces artwork from students across Polk County, allowing residents to experience diverse artistic perspectives and helping young artists reach audiences beyond their own neighborhoods. This approach strengthens connections between communities while showcasing the incredible breadth of artistic talent found
throughout Polk County's schools. “The Arts in Public Spaces program creates a wonderful sense of community pride by giving us the opportunity to showcase the creativity and talent of students from one of our local schools in Haines City." said Haines City Communication and Marketing Manager Merissa Green. "What makes this initiative especially meaningful is that it takes art beyond traditional galleries and museums and places it in spaces where people may not expect to encounter it. That accessibility allows more residents and visitors to experience the arts as part of their everyday lives. Art also helps attract people, businesses and investment. When we support the arts, we are investing not only in our artists and students, but in the cultural and economic vitality of our entire community.” The success of the Student Art Showcase Initiative reflects a strong partnership among several organizations committed to enriching community life through the arts, including Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance, Polk Vision, Polk County Public Schools, Polk Leisure Services Association and participating municipalities across Polk County.
Together, these partners have created a sustainable model that ensures the program can continue for years to come. High-quality frames will be reused annually, allowing future investments to focus on new artwork, matting, and installation while expanding exhibition opportunities for additional students. The Art in Public Spaces program is designed as an annual rotating exhibition. Each year, Polk County art teachers will be invited to submit student artwork through a countywide call for art. Selected pieces will then be professionally prepared and displayed throughout participating municipalities, with new artists featured each year. What began as a simple idea to brighten public buildings has evolved into a countywide initiative that celebrates student achievement, supports arts education, and makes creativity accessible to everyone. As residents visit municipal buildings in Haines City, Lake Wales, Auburndale, and Bartow, they will encounter more than artwork on a wall. They will experience the imagination, talent, and promise of Polk County's young artists, proving that inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places.

Polk Arts & Culture Hall of Fame Inductees HONORING SEVEN INDIVIDUALS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO ARTS AND CULTURE IN POLK COUNTY
Polk County's vibrant arts and cultural community is built on the contributions of individuals who have dedicated their lives to creativity, education, preservation, and service. The Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance has announced its 2026 Polk Arts Hall of Fame inductees, recognizing seven outstanding honorees whose impact can be felt across generations and throughout the county. The Hall of Fame honors those whose achievements have advanced arts and culture in Polk County while creating a lasting legacy for future residents. This year's class exemplifies that mission, representing a diverse range of disciplines and accomplishments that have shaped the region's cultural identity. David and Jean Bunch: Guardians of Local History Few individuals have done more to preserve Polk County's architectural and cultural heritage than David and Jean Bunch. Together, they have championed efforts to protect historic landmarks and ensure that the stories of the past remain connected to future generations. Jean Bunch founded Historic Lakeland, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the city's historic resources. The couple's preservation efforts have included projects such as saving a historic 1914 farmhouse in South Lakeland and helping preserve historical elements within Bonnet Springs Park. David Bunch has become a respected authority on local history, sharing his knowledge through public speaking and advocacy. Their dedication has earned numerous accolades over the years, but their greatest achievement may be the lasting appreciation for local history they have helped foster throughout Polk County.
Patrick Fleitz: Inspiring Excellence Through Music For decades, Patrick Fleitz has influenced the lives of young musicians through his work as a pianist, educator, and arts advocate. As a faculty member at Harrison School for the Arts, Fleitz has mentored countless students, many of whom have gone on to pursue professional careers in music. His impact extends well beyond the classroom. Through his involvement in local theater and performing arts initiatives, Fleitz has helped elevate artistic opportunities throughout Polk County. His commitment to artistic excellence and arts education has fostered a stronger creative community while expanding access to transformative artistic experiences. Tom Freeman: Capturing Florida's Story Through Art The late Tom Freeman dedicated his life to celebrating Florida's beauty, history, and character through visual art. After moving to Lake Wales in 1958, Freeman became a prominent presence in the community, establishing Freeman's Art and Frame Shop and building a reputation as both an accomplished artist and entrepreneur. His artistic legacy remains visible in installations throughout Polk County, including works at Warner University and AdventHealth Lake Wales. Freeman's passion for education and mentorship inspired numerous

artists throughout the region. His collaborative book, Tom Freeman's Florida, co-authored with Marcia Pennington, offered a distinctive artistic tribute to all 67 Florida counties and remains a testament to his deep appreciation for the state's heritage. Lois Cowles Harrison: A Visionary Advocate for the Arts The late Lois Cowles Harrison left an extraordinary mark on arts education and cultural development throughout Florida. A passionate philanthropist and civic leader, Harrison believed the arts should be accessible to everyone and worked tirelessly to make that vision a reality. Her support benefited numerous arts organizations, including the Imperial Symphony Orchestra, while her fundraising leadership helped make possible the construction of the current home of the former Polk Museum of Art. Alongside her husband, Homer Hooks, Harrison championed significant arts initiatives across the state, including the Lois Cowles Harrison Center for the Visual and Performing Arts. Her daughter, Lois E. Harrison, perhaps summarized her legacy best: "For her, art was essential, not optional, a force that could awaken minds and transform communities." Patricia Lamb: An Inspiring Arts Educator For more than 48 years, Patricia "Pat" Lamb has called Lakeland and Polk County home while dedicating her career to strengthening arts education and supporting the teachers and students who make it thrive. As Visual Arts Supervisor for Polk County Public Schools, she helped shape arts programming and mentor generations of educators. Lamb's influence extended throughout Florida through her service as President of the Florida Art Education Association and in numerous board leadership roles, where she championed excellence in arts education and professional development. Nationally, she worked with the College Board and presented workshops and training sessions for educators across the country. Known for her collaborative leadership, mentorship,

and unwavering commitment to quality arts education, Lamb has left a lasting impact on Polk County, the state of Florida, and the broader arts education community. Johnny Bernard Neal, Jr.: Shaping Generations Through Music Education For more than 35 years, the late Johnny Bernard Neal, Jr. inspired students as a music educator within Polk County Public Schools. A graduate of Bethune-Cookman College, Neal served as band director at Jewett High School before continuing his work following school integration. Under his leadership, the Jewett High School band earned recognition for excellence and showmanship, setting a standard that resonated far beyond the classroom. More importantly, Neal's mentorship influenced generations of students, many of whom would become educators and musicians themselves. His 2026 recognition as one of Winter Haven's Black Local Heroes further highlights the enduring impact he had on the community and the countless lives he touched through music and education. The 2026 Polk Arts Hall of Fame induction ceremony will honor these remarkable individuals and families while celebrating the broader impact of arts and culture throughout the community. The gala will take place on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at the Lake Eva Event Center in Haines City. The evening will feature the formal induction of the Hall of Fame class, along with special performances, awards, and a celebration of the creative spirit that continues to make Polk County thrive. Community members are invited to attend and help recognize these extraordinary honorees whose lasting contributions have shaped the county's artistic and cultural heritage. CELEBRATING 45 SEASONS OF COMMUNITY, CREATIVITY, AND ENTERTAINMENT For 45 seasons, Haines City Theatre has been a cornerstone of arts and culture in Haines City, bringing live theatre to local audiences through the dedication of volunteers and a passion for the performing arts. What began as a fundraising effort more than four decades ago has grown into a thriving community theatre that continues to entertain, educate, and inspire. Haines City Theatre traces its roots back to 1981, when it was established to raise funds for audiovisual equipment at the former Haines City High School. Productions were originally staged in the old high school building, which served as the theatre's home for many years. When that facility was closed in 2015, the organization relocated to its current location. Despite the challenges of brief interruptions during the transition and the COVID-19 pandemic, the theatre has remained active and committed to serving the community. Today, Haines City Theatre proudly presents its 45th season. Season 45 promises a lineup filled with laughter, music, and memorable characters. The season opens with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, running Aug 14 through Sep 6. This beloved musical reimagines the biblical story of Joseph, whose journey from betrayal to triumph has captivated audiences for generations. Filled with colorful costumes, energetic music, and family-friendly storytelling, the production is expected to be one of the theatre's most popular shows of the year. Just in time for Halloween season, The Addams Family Musical arrives Oct 9 through Nov 1. Audiences can expect all the spooky charm and quirky humor that have made the Addams family cultural icons. The story centers on Wednesday Addams, who shocks her unconventional family by falling in love with a completely ordinary young man. With ancestors rising from the crypt and plenty of surprises along the way, the musical promises a delightfully eerie evening of entertainment. Following the new year, Haines City Theatre presents Come, Blow Your Horn from Jan 29 through Feb 14. Written by legendary playwright Neil Simon, this was his first Broadway success and remains a classic comedy. The story follows a young man who moves in with his older brother, a carefree bachelor whose lifestyle presents both temptation and life lessons. Packed with Simon's signature wit and humor, the production offers audiences a chance to enjoy one of America's most celebrated playwrights. The season concludes with a crowd favorite: Grease. While the stage version differs slightly from the popular film adaptation, it retains the romance, humor, and infectious music that audiences know and love. Set in the 1950s,

Beyond its mainstage productions, Haines City Theatre is also committed to arts education and community engagement. Participants gain hands-on experience in performance and stagecraft while building confidence and creativity. Veterans Memorial Tour at Oak Hill Burial Park Divided into three district areas: Temple Emanuel, Laurel Hill, and Oak Hill. Oak Hill Burial Park in Lakeland is the final resting place of many notable citizens, including military veterans. The service of these members of the United States armed forces ranges from World War I to the Vietnam Conflict.
