Like many of you, I can’t believe the holidays are upon us – where has 2024 gone? I don’t know about you, but I’m blaming it on Helene and Milton for messing with my sense of time these last several weeks. One minute we’re battling 95-degree temperatures, the next minute we’re hunkering down due to two hurricanes, and then suddenly it’s Thanksgiving with Christmas right around the corner. With all of that going on, we had a great October celebrating National Arts & Humanities Month, marked by our first-ever PACA Grants being distributed and our annual Hall of Fame Gala – that, like many events, had to be rescheduled due to Hurricane Milton.
Despite the rescheduling, the Gala was a wonderful celebration of Polk’s arts and culture scene. You can find a list of the Annual Award winners on Page 17 and photos of our newest Hall of Fame Class on Page 19. Additionally, thanks to our patrons and our generous sponsors, PACA will be able to use the funds raised from the Hall of Fame Gala to further support our artists and arts and cultural organizations here in Polk County. We remain committed to being good stewards of the sponsorship dollars and ticket revenue.
I do hope you had the opportunity to check out the work in our inaugural Best of Polk Art Show. The exhibit debuted on October 29 at the Hall of Fame Gala and then moved to Tree Swallow Gallery in downtown Winter Haven for the remainder of its run – November 8-December 6. I’m grateful to the AGB Museum of Art at Florida Southern College for their sponsorship of the show and to Ridge Art Association and Tree Swallow Gallery for their help in pulling everything together. The inaugural show featured a wide range of eclectic work, and we gave out over $5000 in prize money – and we’re looking to give out more for the 2025 Best of Polk Show. If you missed the show, you can check out the exhibition catalogue on our website.
Shifting back to the holiday theme, we hope to create our Holiday Art Market once again this year. This online catalogue provides PACA members the opportunity to market their art and services via the PACA website. Be sure to check out polkarts.org to find out where you can “shop local” and purchase unique gifts for your friends, family, and co-workers.
Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t take the opportunity to publicly thank Bev Hendricks, our loyal and faithful Art-i-facts editor for her many years (13+) of service to the Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance. This issue is Bev’s final issue as editor, and we’ll miss her work ethic and her design aesthetic. In addition to her work for PACA, I’d also like to thank Bev for her tireless advocacy for Polk’s arts and cultural organizations – especially ones that often go unnoticed. In fact, it was Bev who first suggested that PACA should consider Dr. Jessie Owens for induction into to the Hall of Fame for her many years of arts education service to the children of Winter Haven. And while Art-i-facts will miss Bev’s touch, I’m confident she’ll still be out supporting artists and arts and cultural events around our county – that’s just who she is!

Inaugural Best of Polk Show Debuts
The Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance (PACA) in collaboration with Ridge Art Association has produced the Best of Polk Art Show, on view until December 6 at Tree Swallow Gallery in Winter Haven. Daryl Ward, PACA’s Executive Director, had long wanted to find a way to honor Polk’s tremendous artists. “Having a ‘best of’ show for Polk’s visual artists has been one of my goals for some time now,” Ward said. “It’s important to showcase the amazing caliber of artistry going on in our county.”
The show was juried by Kathrine Page from upstate New York. Over 190 entries were curated to 55 that made it into the show. Page was duly impressed by the work she saw. “The work presented showcases a diverse range of artistic expressions reflecting the richness of human experience and emotion from Polk County artists,” Page said. She was particularly enamored with her Best of Show choice, Forest Reflections, by Marcia Morse Mullins. “The piece distinguished itself through its three-dimensionality and abstract, asymmetrical composition. I was captivated by the organic contours and the inventive use of materials that blend contrasting textures from found objects. Moreover, the sculpture’s apparent technical proficiency and sublime simplicity left a lasting impression on me,” Page said about Mullins’ work.
An artists’ reception was held November 9, in which over $5000 in prize money was handed out. The winners, as chosen by Page, were:
Best of Show
Forest Reflections, Marcia Morse Mullins ($2500)
Second Place
The Showroom, Preston Stafford ($1000)
Third Place
Manuel in his Workshop, Karla Pirona ($500)
Award of Excellence ($200)
Reflections of History, Sarah Farnsworth Capitol Reef Utah, Steve Latimer
A Fleeting Glimpse of Possibility, Sherry Ross
Feathered Elegance, Doris Dionne
Styles For Every Occasion, Dianne Adams
Honorable Mention ($100)
The Ocean, Matt Fitz
Gala Choice Award, Awakening, Andy Glogower
Street Ybor, Chris Roll

PACA Distributes First Grant Funds
In late October, PACA sent its first-ever grant funds to six arts and cultural organizations or local artists. The funding, which was the result of the successful 2023 Arts & Culture Hall of Fame Gala, totaled over $25,000. PACA’s Executive Director, Daryl Ward, acknowledges this grant program is something that’s been in the works for a while. “Our members have consistently asked for help securing direct funding for their projects, so this initial grant program is a step in that direction,” Ward said.
The grant projects range from marketing support for a mobile African-American history museum to support for an online art show for a local arts organization. Tiffany Van Wieren, the Arts in Medicine Coordinator for Watson Clinic Foundation, was excited about the funding her program received. “The grant from the Polk Arts and Cultural Alliance fuels our mission to create a sanctuary of healing through art within our community,” she said. The Arts in Medicine program received funding for two grants
to further expand their programming. “With the support of these grants, we are creating a framework where art and health intersect in meaningful ways, from the deeply personal stories share in LegacyLane to the city-wide engagement of Arts and Health Week,” Van Wieren added. The following organizations received funding in this inaugural grant program: The Luster African American Heritage Museum, The J. Owens Academy of Fine Arts, Mary Correa Studios, The Lakeland Arts Association, The Ridge Art Association, and The Watson Clinic Arts in Medicine Program. The Luster African American Heritage Museum was especially grateful for the funding. “The Mobile Education Museum brings the museum experience to K-12 schools located in Polk County,” a museum spokesperson said. “This allows students to have access to our museum’s artifacts and exhibits while learning about African American culture and history,” they added.
Art-i-facts Magazine Editor Retires
When Bev Hendricks sent this edition of Art-i-facts to the printer on November 12, it marked the end of an era for Polk County’s arts and cultural community. This is Hendricks’ last edition as Art-i-facts’ editor and closes out over thirteen years working with the Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance (PACA). Hendricks’ work for the Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance started in 2011, but she was participating in the efforts of the alliance before then. She grew up in the Kansas City area but moved to Polk County after serving in the Army. She first worked for United Way, and eventually became the Executive Director of the Imperial Symphony Orchestra (now the Lakeland Symphony Orchestra). It was during that time that she served as secretary of the Polk Arts Alliance (now the Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance) and worked to advance the mission of the organization: to advocate with a united voice on behalf of the arts organization of the county.
Meri Mass, the longtime Executive Director of the Polk Arts Alliance who retired in 2021, was grateful for Hendricks’ work. “Bev was the best editor/writer for the magazine,” Mass said, “because she knew the arts groups personally and inside and out.” Mass noted how Hendricks’ background and experience made her the perfect editor: “Being a creative herself both artistically and as a musician, there wasn’t a subject she didn’t know about, which was so valuable. Sometimes she knew more about the arts groups then they did!”
Bev reflected recently on her time working in the arts community and specifically working on this very magazine. “I am most proud to have had the opportunity to share information about the incredible organizations, individual artists, staff and volunteers that we have right here in Polk County. We are so lucky,” she noted. And though she may no longer have a month-to-month connection to the arts community in quite the same way, she’s also planning to stay involved. “I plan to continue to attend many events, and to help out and support PACA as a member and anyway that I can,” she said.
Daryl Ward, the current Executive Director of PACA, is grateful for Bev’s work and is sure Bev’s commitment to excellence will live on with the new iteration of the magazine. “She’s created quite a legacy with her deep passion for promoting the arts and cultural sector of Polk County,” he said. “And even though the magazine will continue, we will definitely miss Bev’s touch on this publication.”
“bringing people together from all backgrounds, ethnicities, and beliefs to create a collaborative learning environment that embodies positivity, inspires confidence, and opens people ’s creativity for expression in all art forms.
The Polk Arts & Culture Alliance (PACA) awarded us a grant for $5,000 to purchase equipment and tools. We purchased five pottery wheels and various pottery tools with these funds and plan to purchase more wheels in early 2025. Classes and studio time will be available in January 2025.
PACA also awarded us with a $2,000 grant toward our second art gallery. This gallery will be smaller and will be used to showcase local talent and emerging artists. We will begin remodeling to create this gallery in early 2025.
Austin Snedden of Winter Haven will manage our new pottery studio. If interested in classes or want more information, snap the QR code (right) from your smart phone or email Austin personally, austinsneddenceramics@gmail.com.
We thank PACA and the many others who have provided financial support for these projects, however, we need more donors. Please contact Christy Hemenway (christyhemenway@gmail.com) if you would like to make a donation or are interested in naming rights.
Artists in the News
The J. Owens Academy of Fine Arts, Inc. presents the Christmas Musical REJOICE!
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Seasonal carols and songs are being selected, rehearsed by the piano, string and vocal students as well as the chorale members of the J. Owens Academy of Fine Arts, Inc. The Christmas musical entitled ‘’REJOICE!’’ presents the traditional message of the Christmas story as soulful celebration of the season.
Created by Bradley Knight, Geron Davis and Luke Gambill, this work was arranged and orchestrated by Bradley Knight.
The Sankofa Chorale is host of the holiday musical. This year’s guest artist features Allyssa Jones, Director of University Chamber Singers from the University of South Florida. From the Sankofa Chorale, our own local solo vocalists for the evening will include Sherwood Davis, Dr. Anita Major, Harold Major, Constance Poitier and Ross Shannon. The Owens Academy Young Artists will perform pre-traditional holiday selections on their instruments to celebrate the season. The concert, held at Hurst Chapel AME Church, located at 875 Avenue O NE Winter Haven, Florida begins at 4pm on Sunday, December 8, 2024. There is no charge for this concert, however donations are accepted to assist with student scholarships, supplies and operational expenses of the academy.
For more information, you may contact Artistic Director, Dr. Jessie Owens at Melodicjess@aol.com, phone to 863-604-5415 or visit the website at drjowensacademyoffinearts.org.
Meet the Artist: Ericson Proper
For Lakeland coach, poet, and creative rebel Ericson AF Proper, the journey of Emergence is just that—a step into the unknown, an embrace of mystery, and an invitation for others to do the same. After a three-decade career in branding and graphic design, coupled with the transformative experience of burnout and a severe spinal injury, Proper’s artistic path took on new life. His solo art show Emergence is the culmination of his recent 5-year journey—a space where process, unfoldment, and liberation intersect.
Proper’s work transcends traditional categories of art. Created through what he calls the “Intuiti Process,” these pieces are raw, intuitive, and rooted in his teachings and coaching method, Creative Unfoldment™. Here, art is not about getting it right—it’s about letting go, tuning into the unconscious, and letting each piece come alive through both digital and mixed media intuitive collage, found poetry, and intuitive painting. The process itself is bound by time limits, 21-45 minutes, encouraging spontaneity and the liberation of suppressed emotions and images. “In this work, there’s no plan, no overthinking,” Proper explains. “Each piece unfolds naturally, in the moment, just as we do in life.” This is not art meant to soothe or pacify; it’s art as a wake-up call. Each piece in Emergence is designed to unsettle, challenge, and inspire. “I want people to confront the peculiar and powerful aspects within themselves,” Proper says. “To see, to feel, to engage with the voices we often stifle.” For those willing to embark on their own unfolding, Emergence is an invitation to experience art as a living question—an exploration where the journey matters more than the destination.
Experience Eric Proper’s “Emergence: The Art of Unfolding the Mystery Within” at Bartow Art Guild’s Momentum Gallery February 1-22 on Saturdays from 10am-4pm. Meet the artist at the opening reception on Monday, February 10 from 6-8pm.
Don’t miss this opportunity to be uplifted by an afternoon of timeless music celebrating the season and community at 3pm, Sunday, December 8 at City Central Church, located at 310 Frank Lloyd Wright Way, Lakeland, FL 33803. "Winter Praises" is designed to capture the spirit of the season through music from diverse cultural and historical traditions.
A musical highlight of the concert is "Persephone Gone," a powerful and moving piece composed by Lakeland's own Kara Stacy Bedwell. The piece, commissioned by Lakeland Choral Society for this event, tells the myth of Persephone and Demeter, invoking both winter's chill and the promise of rebirth.
Local musician Shing Palagano will accompany the choir on the drum for this evocative composition. As part of its mission, the Lakeland Choral Society raises funds through concert proceeds to provide college scholarships for aspiring Polk County vocalists. Concertgoers enjoy an afternoon of beautiful music while supporting local talent in their academic and musical pursuits.
Tickets are $10 cash/$11 card. Ages 12 and under are free, ages 13-18 and college students are $5 with ID. Purchase day of concert tickets on-site or online at www.lakelandchoralsociety.org.

RESTORATION IN PROGRESS
Restoration in Progress
The Polk County Board of County Commissioners has commenced a project to restore over 200 exterior windows at the Old Polk County Courthouse, which is currently home to the Polk County History Center. The restoration project is scheduled to be completed by Summer 2025. Constructed in 1908, with additions added in 1926, the neoclassical style building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
Preservation and Restoration - Not Replacement
The window restoration project is being performed in alignment with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The goal of the project is to preserve the original distinctive materials, features, finishes and construction techniques of each window and, where necessary, repair deteriorated historic features to match the old in design, color, texture and, where possible, materials.
Custom Built
Historic windows are among the most important elements contributing to the character of a building. The abundance of windows on the 1908 courthouse exemplifies the significance of natural light in neoclassical design. Each window was custom made to fit openings and has shifted and changed within the openings as the building has aged. After a hundred years, the windows may not be perfectly square, but fit the openings exactly.
The wood and metal windows of the 1908 and 1926 sections of the Old Polk County Courthouse are made from individual parts. The windows installed in the 1908 sections of the building feature extensive millwork from old-growth wood. This wood is significantly denser, durable and rot-resistant. New wood windows do not match the quality and durability of historic wood windows.
Sustainable Development
Preservation and restoration not only retain the character of the Old Polk County Courthouse, but also reduce waste, demonstrating the role of historic preservation in sustainable development. Funded by the Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, the State of Florida and the Polk County BoCC, the window restoration project creates local jobs for skilled craftsmen, generating an additional investment in our community.
