Designer’s Spotlight Berny Martin In the heartland of America, where cornfields meld with skyscrapers, fashion isn’t just a statement—it’s a movement led by visionaries like Berny Martin. Born with an innate flair for design, Martin’s journey from Haiti to the Midwest is a compelling narrative of passion, perseverance, and innovation.
Realizing the untapped potential of the Midwest in the fashion landscape, Martin founded Midwest Fashion Week in 2006. TIME Magazine recognized it as the premier fashion platform in the region by 2012, transforming Middle America into a hub of sartorial innovation.
As a child, Martin’s world was woven with threads of creativity, a tapestry further enriched by his grandmother’s encouragement. Her influence led him to sew his first pair of jeans and planted the seeds for what would later become an illustrious career. Initially, Martin tread the “safer” path, earning a tech degree from Purdue University. Yet, the draw of fashion proved irresistible. Heeding the advice of a friend, Martin embarked on a bold journey to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, setting the stage for launching his own label, Catou, a homage to his grandmother.
Martin’s visionary designs have graced runways from Paris to Hong Kong, and his collections have been adorned by international celebrities. Acclaimed for his contributions, Martin’s accolades include the United Nations Association Young Professionals Award and the prestigious title of Best Menswear Designer in the Midwest.
In 2005, against the conventional backdrop of Indianapolis, Indiana, Catou emerged—a fierce advocate for professional wear that resonated across both men’s and women’s wardrobes.
Residing in Evansville, Indiana, Martin remains a torchbearer for global fashion, continuing to craft designs that marry elegance with empowerment. His story is a testament to the belief that while the journey may not always be easy, it’s undoubtedly worth every second.
