The New Palm Beach

For decades the quiet island of Palm Beach has positioned itself as the pearl of the Americas or the St Tropez of Florida, cementing itself as the bougie place to live. When you walk down the elegant and fabulous Worth avenue and you pass Louis Vuitton, Jennifer Tattenlli, Daneil Fine art Gallery you have no shortage of world-class shops to lose yourself in, and here is a place to just that.

Thanks to Florida’s copious amounts of sunny days, it has every year, low taxes, and their handling of the Pandemic it is no wonder as to why the majority of investment banks in New York decided to move down to Florida and set up residence on Palm Beach Island and with this existential flow of money and creative energy has exploded onto this 7.8 square mile island cleanly separating itself between the Atlantic ocean and the intercoastal waterway.

The burgeoning restaurant scene has completely taken off since Covid and you can find your favorites such as Ta-Boo, the Leopard Lounge, or Buccan serving up their iconic dishes and the more recently welcomed addition of Sant Ambroeus and Le Bilboquet to the must-try list.

The formidable Colony Hotel which opened its doors in 1947, just a short block from the glitzy Worth Avenue has always had the who's who of celebrities and royal families alike call at some point the Colony Hotel home. It was once the winter home for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and the Churchills. It recently reopened after an extensive refurbishment by Kimble Interiors and breathtaking painted wallpaper that depicts the native flora and fauna of Florida against a backdrop the color of peach ice cream by the company De Gournay, all under the masterful supervision of Sarah Wetenhall the hotel's current Owner.

Le Bilboquet, the esteemed French bistro that has been a mainstay with New Yorkers both in Manhattan and Sag Harbor, has finally opened in Palm Beach.

Arguably the most in-demand reservation on the island right now, it is a sensual delight from the food to the stylish, but approachable, art deco décor. Gorgeous Maison Gatti bistro chairs, warm wood and brass accents provide an understated elegance, while the courtyard with its climbing jasmine vines and tropical potted plants transports one to the South of France. The pitch perfect décor is matched by spot-on French renditions like moules frites, bouillabaisse, salad niçoise and delectable daily specials. On the day I was there, our table started with a Hamachi crudo punctuated by grapefruit segments, translucent fennel slices and horseradish. It was fresh, innovative and delicious. For dinner the curried lobster is not to be missed. Of course, there is a fantastic wine list and full bar (their Nuestra Dama is fantastic!). Get your reservation in advance, as this will be one unforgettable meal.

Swifty’s, New York's preeminent society boite, now has a new home in Palm beach at The Colony Hotel. The Palm Beach incarnation called Swifty’s POOL features al fresco seating under a hanging garden and is led by Swifty’s original founder Robert Caravaggi. Executive Chef Tom Whitaker loves to work with organic fresh produce from surrounding farms and waters to augment Swifty’s classic lunch and dinner dining options. With so many delicious options, it is hard to choose. Whatever your final option is, make sure to leave some space for one of Swifty’s iconic desserts, and don’t miss the daily live music poolside.

Buccan celebrating its 10th year on the island of Palm Beach this year, cementing the fact they are here to stay. Originally opening its doors on Madison avenue in 1982 and gaining rapid popularity whereby it has 5 locations in the New York City area and now Palm Beach too, Sant Ambroeus brings a touch of old-world Milan to the shores of Palm Beach Island offering up a chic design of rich and noble material and a sure nod to the 50’s era in Italy. Here you will find Executive Chef Marco Barbisotti serving perfectly made Tagliatelle alla Bolognese, Vitello Tonnato, and Cotoletta alla Milanese to name but just a few

Ta-boo is without a doubt the place to see and be seen. Gifted with a great location on the world-famous Worth Avenue has set it up for absolute success since 1941. Ta-boo has had the presence of ex-US presidents, Hollywood, and British Royalty over the years enjoying a casual drink and delicious meals under the roll-away roof exposing the starry night Floridian sky. Ta-boo the bistro serves up American-influenced classic dishes with a Palm Beach flair has routinely won multiple awards over the years and the local publications have “crowned Ta-boo for its understated elegance and influential gatherings”. You never know who may just bump into at Ta-boo, in years past it was rumored in WWII that a German submarine commander came ashore for a couple of drinks, you just never know. Nonetheless don’t miss out on passing Ta-boo without popping in and ordering a Bloody Mary cocktail, some say this is where it was originally concocted.

Josée Nadeau,an artist to collect

For years Palm Beach has been recognized as the “American French Riviera” and a known gathering place for industry leaders and Hollywood elites.

This is where the talented artist Josée Nadeau currently calls home. Originally from Montréal, Canada, Josée settled in Palm Beach to nurture her growing list of clientele in South Florida. Nadeau graduated from Concordia University in Montréal in Fine arts, Josée Nadeau is part of a group named the Emma Lake Workshop in Canada, which was created by a selection of a committee and recognized by Clement Greenberg the famous art critic from New York. She then ventured to Europe where she was invited to meet Van der Kemp in the gardens of Claude Monet. She would oscillate time between Palm Beach and Wellington where she was the artist in residence painting world-class horses.

Josée is the protégée of European art expert Gerald Van Der Kemp, curator of Château de Versailles and responsible for the restructuring and preservation of the gardens of Claude Monet in Giverny, France. Blown away by Josée’s talent, Van Der Kemp

offered her his personal studio on the garden grounds for a period of 10 years from 19982008. Here, she created her masterpieces which can be found in the personal art collections of celebrities, collectors, and royalty. Her clientele spans from, Clint Eastwood, Frances Fisher, John Helliwell Supertramp, Pierce Brosnan to a direct descendant of King George V Lord Frederick Windsor.

Over a year ago now, when the pandemic closed the world and Josée could no longer travel internationally, her focus shifted to local Oceanscape in Palm Beach. With the charming Florida Atlantic Ocean wrapping around Palm Beach Island, it was only natural that she would begin gravitating towards ocean scenes capturing mother and child and children playing in the water.

Josée has appeared on television and been published in articles around the globe. She has collaborated with Ralph Lauren for his boutiques in both South and East Hampton. For a unique type of experience, that is energizing and invigorating to watch and be a part of is her live painting, where you can see Josée painting in front of an audience accompanied by a live 95-piece symphony orchestra and she has done so for events honoring Nelson Mandela, alongside Dionne Warwick, which she positively adores to be a part of and create.

One of her permanent installations is located at the renowned Stein Eriksen Lodge in Park City, Utah. Josée created a portrait of the Olympic gold medallist while skiing, capturing his skill on full display. Before he passed, Eriksen signed the 9-foot painting with Josée celebrating his lifetime achievements. His presence is now immortalized in the lobby and viewable from all three stories of the interior main building. Excitingly, Josée Nadeau will be going on a European tour this summer and you will be able to find her in exotic, historical and cultural locations.
