Memories of a Magical Reality: The Imagined Word Natasha Bishop

The Imagined Word includes twenty-two works on paper by Puerto Rican artist Rafael Trelles.

Produced between 2017 and 2019, these drawings combine painting and printmaking elements and feature protagonists from various literary sources.

Throughout this series, Trelles masterfully weaves together themes of memory and reality; magic and the mundane; and art and literature.

Like figures from our memories, the characters in this series are not presented in a completely realistic way. While many of their faces are opaque and clearly defined, their bodies are only suggested through vaporous shapes. Trelles creates these lines by employing a dry brush technique and their vague nature emphasizes a ‘remembered’ quality.

This is clearly seen in the depiction of the woman in Majestad negra. Her face and torso are realistically illustrated, but her arms, poised frontally as if about to begin a dance, disintegrate into suggested contour lines and streaks of color. Strokes of white acrylic paint compose her ankle-length skirt leaving visible the surface of the brown paper and dissolve entirely on one side, as if a faded memory.

More than just literary protagonists, these characters are memories pulled from Trelles’s mind. When discussing his process, Trelles says he began the first works in this series by drawing an anonymous figure. As he drew, each figure brought forth a recollection of a literary work. “I didn’t choose the characters,” he explains, “they chose me.” The later works in the series involve a different kind of memory engagement. Rather than have the characters identify themselves, Trelles searched the recesses of his memory for characters he wanted to realize on paper.

After completing a drawing, the artist would then select a quote to be presented alongside it. Trelles believes each quote embodies the essence of the character depicted. Most of them are tinged with sadness and touch on themes of memory, sight, or bittersweet transformation. In The Metamorphosis, for example, Trelles captures the helplessness felt

by Gregor Samsa, the protagonist of Franz Kafka’s novella, who had inexplicably turned into an insect one morning. Trelles’s surreal drawing of poor Gregor shows a man’s head attached to a winged insect body resting upon a single leather shoe. “I cannot make you understand,” the accompanying text reads, “I cannot make anyone understand what is happening inside me. I cannot even explain it to myself.”

Trelles draws extensively upon the magical realism literary genre for inspiration in this series of works. As its name suggests, magical realism infuses magical and supernatural elements into an otherwise realworld setting. While writers from across the world work in this genre, it is most closely associated with Latin American literature. Trelles cites the Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier as one of the forerunners of this genre. As an ode to the author, Trelles dedicates the only triptych of the series to his pioneering novel, El Reino de este mundo.

Trelles explains that Carpentier identified what he considers the fundamentally Latin American conception of magical realism. “[He] used to say,” the artist recounts, “that the difference between the European and the Latin American was that the European had to search for that alternate reality in his subconscious, and the Latin American’s reality is magical.”1 1

By summoning literary characters from his memory and realizing them on paper, Trelles creates a magical reality not confined to the subconscious, which viewers can access by visiting the exhibition.

Like any magical realist setting, the exhibition is not pure fantasy, but not mundane reality; it is a hybrid of both. These characters have emerged from Trelles’s memory and wait suspended on the paper to be engaged by the viewers in the gallery. It is through their interaction that the space takes on a magical quality.

It is Trelles’s intention that by looking at the works and reading their accompanying texts, the viewer will begin to recall the referenced story. The viewer’s recollection of the depicted character will then meet and combine with the artist’s memory of them. Through this interplay, a new memory will be formed atop two existing ones. If the viewer has not read a referenced text, Trelles hopes the work will motivate them to do so while carrying the memory of the character from the exhibition to the story. Either way, they will become embedded in the viewer’s mind as either a fresh or transformed memory. The literary characters Trelles depicts change in the gallery, constantly being altered by the viewer’s perception. As Alice says after her return from Wonderland, “I can’t go back to yesterday because I was a different person then.”

Trelles draws from a number of seminal magical realist literary works in his drawings, including Gabriel García Márquez’s Cien años de soledad and Kafka’s Metamorphosis. Other authors referenced are known for creating magical worlds, such as Lewis Carroll who took Alice to Wonderland and William Shakespeare who realized the Midsummer Night’s Dream. With his drawings, Trelles breathes new life into these timeless works and invites us to do the same by activating, sharing, and transforming our memories not only in the gallery, but in the spaces beyond.

Memorias de una realidad mágica: La palabra imaginada Natasha Bishop

La palabra imaginada incluye veintidós obras en papel por el artista puertorriqueño Rafael Trelles. Producidos entre 2017 y 2019, estos dibujos combinan elementos de la pintura y el grabado inspirados en los protagonistas de varias fuentes literarias. A través de esta serie, Trelles entreteje magistralmente los temas de la memoria y la realidad; la magia y lo mundano; el arte y la literatura.

Como figuras de nuestra memoria, los personajes de esta serie no se presentan de manera completamente realista. Muchos de sus rostros son sombríos, claramente definidos, pero sus cuerpos son sugeridos por formas vaporosas. Trelles traza estas formas utilizando la técnica de pincel seco y su naturaleza indefinida realza la cualidad de un recuerdo. Lo vemos en su representación de la mujer en Majestad negra. Su rostro y torso han sido ilustrados de modo realista mientras sus brazos en posición como si fuera a comenzar un baile, se desintegran en líneas de un contorno sugerido.

Más que meros protagonistas literarios, estos personajes son memorias extraídas de la mente del artista. Al describir su proceso, Trelles dice que comenzó las primeras piezas de esta serie dibujando una figura anónima. Según dibujaba, cada figura dio a luz el recuerdo de una obra literaria. “No escogí los personajes,” explica Trelles, “ellos me escogieron a mí.” Las obras posteriores en la serie generan un encuentro distinto con la memoria. En lugar de los personajes identificarse

a sí mismos, Trelles busca entre los resquicios de su memoria a personajes que ha querido realizar sobre el papel. Luego de completar un dibujo, el artista entonces selecciona una cita que lo acompaña. Trelles entiende que cada cita encarna la esencia del personaje representado. La mayoría de ellos teñidos de tristeza, abordan temas de la memoria, una visión o una transformación agridulce. En La metamorfosis, por ejemplo, Trelles capta la impotencia que sentía Gregor Samsa, el protagonista de la novela de Franz Kafka, que inexplicablemente se convirtió en insecto una mañana. La imagen surreal del pobre Gregor muestra la cabeza de un hombre sobre el cuerpo de un insecto alado posado en un zapato de cuero. ““No puedo hacerte entender,” es el texto que acompaña, “No puedo hacer que nadie entienda lo que está sucediendo dentro de mí. Ni siquiera puedo explicarlo a mí mismo”.

Trelles extrae ampliamente del género literario del realismo mágico para inspirarse en esta serie. Tal y como lo sugiere el nombre, el realismo mágico le infunde elementos mágicos y sobrenaturales a un escenario por demás real. Aunque escritores en todo el mundo han trabajado en dicho género, el mismo se asocia principalmente con la literatura latinoamericana. Trelles cita al escritor cubano Alejo Carpentier como uno de los precursores del género. En una especie de oda al autor, Trelles le dedica el único tríptico de la serie a su novela pionera, El reino de este mundo. Trelles explica que Carpentier identificó lo que él considera la concepción fundamentalmente latinoamericana del realismo mágico. “[El] solía decir,” cuenta el artista, “que la

diferencia entre lo europeo y lo latinoamericano era que lo europeo tenía que buscar esa realidad alterna en su subconsciente, mientras que la realidad latinoamericana era mágica.”

Al convocar personajes literarios de su memoria y realizarlos sobre papel, Trelles crea una realidad mágica no confinada al subconsciente, que los espectadores pueden acceder al visitar la exhibición. Como cualquier escenario del realismo mágico, la muestra no es pura fantasía, pero tampoco es realidad mundana; es un híbrido de ambas. Estos personajes han surgido de la memoria de Trelles y esperan, suspendidos en el papel, al encuentro con los visitantes de la galería. Es mediante esa interacción que el espacio cobra una cualidad mágica.

Es la intención de Trelles que al mirar las obras y leer los textos que las acompañan, el espectador comenzará a recordar la historia de donde provienen. El recuerdo del espectador se encontrará con la memoria que inspiró al artista.

A través de ese encuentro, una nueva memoria se formará sobre las dos existentes. Si el espectador no ha leído el texto de la obra, Trelles alberga la esperanza de que la obra les motivará ha hacerlo, manteniendo la memoria del personaje de la exhibición en su lectura. De cualquier modo, estos personajes se alojarán en la mente del espectador como una memoria nueva o transformada. Los personajes literarios que Trelles representa cambian en el espacio de la galería, constantemente alterados por la percepción de quien los mira.

Como dice Alicia a su regreso del País de la Maravillas, “No puedo volver al ayer porque entonces era una persona diferente.”

Los dibujos de Trelles se inspiran en una serie de obras literarias seminales del realismo mágico, incluyendo Cien años de soledad, de Gabriel García Márquez, y La Metamorfosis de Kafka.

Otros autores referenciados son conocidos por su

creación de mundos mágicos, como Lewis Carroll, quien llevó a Alicia al país de las maravillas y William Shakespeare en su Sueño de una noche de verano. A través de sus dibujos, Trelles les infunde nueva vida a estas obras eternas y nos invita a hacer lo mismo al activar, compartir y transformar nuestra imaginación.

How to visually imagine what is represented through words? How to make the image speak? How to create spaces of representation that allow diverse manifestations and artistic languages to engage in dialogue? Many creators have confronted this dilemma, perhaps because we live immersed in a continuous narrative of images that carry with them messages and values. The Argentine writer Julio Cortazar has spoken about how the composition of his text “Fin de etapa” from his collection of stories Deshoras reflects on that fusion of image and word questioning the basic notions of reality and imagination. But there are many who have debated that relation between text and image.

For some, the text can reveal itself more extensively to describe a phenomenon, thus acquiring more importance than the image. For others, the image itself expresses the basic idea and the text, if it exists, turns into a mere appendix. This exhibition, The Imagined Word, by visual artist Rafael Trelles, forces us to ponder that relation in a critical way.

The 22 pieces that comprise this exhibition reflect the art world through literary works while indirectly analyze how the literary world is exposed in artistic creation. A series of ideas and ruminations

recur throughout the works. Among them, the pleasure and the power of the word and the image, the flights of the imagination, the idea of transformation, the process of metamorphosis, loneliness and death, the questioning of essentialisms, the power of the wondrous and the magical, the confrontation of human beings with a modern world that oppresses and erases them, especially through patriarchy, the importance of individualism, among many others.

The visual and literary languages are equally varied, ranging from images of a more realistic nature (“Gitano”, “Lilus Kikus”, “Miriam”, “Alice”), to others impacted by more irrational discourses.

It is significant that “Naga” is accompanied by a text from The Book of Imaginary Beings by Jorge Luis Borges. This book contains descriptions of one hundred and sixteen monsters that have populated mythology and religion. In The Book of Imaginary Beings, Borges states: “We ignore the sense of the dragon, like we ignore the sense of the universe, but there is something in his image that agrees with the imagination of men.” This quote may be useful in approaching of the works by Trelles: “Naga” and “Chilam Balam”, for example. It also speaks to

other works of varied discourses and styles present/ contained in The Imagined Word as a sort of intrusion or alteration of rational norms. For example, the traces of surrealism that appear in the novel The Kingdom of this World, by Alejo Carpentier, are present in the visual representation by Trelles.

Or in the discourse of the fantastic in “Axolotl”, the idea of the absurd in “Rhinoceros”, alongside the enigmatic ambiguity of the terror of modernity in The Metamorphosis.

The materiality of the body is central to this exhibition. Human bodies appear with distinctive marks of gender, race and historical origin along with transformed, transmuted, hybridized bodies in flight. We observe the beginnings of a body (“Sofa”), as well as the bodies created through the artistic gesture of the images made out of charcoal or created through words (“Aniuta”) and then become reified. And presiding over everything is the look. The piece based on Saramago’s, Blindness, powerfully underscores the recognition of these bodies through the necessary gesture of looking, observing carefully and reflecting on the limits of our consciousness. After all, the pandemic described in the novel in Saramago’s novel is a very specific one, a white blindness, where the most amoral characters triumph and all other bodies are dispensable. Survival of the disposable bodies in Encancaranublado, who appear wide eyed and alert, suggests another possibility. In the Lacanian psychoanalytic theory, the gaze is the anxious mental state that comes with the selfawareness that it is possible to see and to look. The psychological effect over the person submitted to the gaze is a loss of autonomy by realizing that one is a visible object. A possible entry into the symbolic order? What does the gaze in this piece tell us, the relieved gaze of having survived the shipwreck?

No other piece evokes mystery or summons the imagination as “The Golem”. If the golem, thought of as folkloric or mythological fabrication refers to

the creation of an animated being from inanimate matter, metaphor for many of the embryonic, as a metaphorical figure, the enigmatic image of the golem that Trelles creates from Meyrink’s text fills the observer with mystery and uneasiness for the strength and power of the image.

Undoubtedly, The Imagined Word, an invitation to exercise the capacity to interpret and produce messages, combining diverse languages from a critical and creative perspective, will dazzle and perturb its visitors.

¿Cómo imaginar visualmente lo representado a través de la palabra? ¿Cómo hacer hablar la imagen? ¿Cómo crear espacios de representación donde dialoguen diversas manifestaciones y lenguajes artísticos? Son muchos los creadores que se han enfrentado a este dilema, quizás porque vivimos inmersos en una continua narración de imágenes portadoras de mensajes y valores. El escritor argentino Julio Cortázar ha hablado sobre cómo la composición de su texto “Fin de etapa” de su colección de cuentos Deshoras reflexiona acerca de esa fusión de imagen y palabra para cuestionar las nociones básicas de la realidad y la imaginación. Pero son muchos quienes han debatido esa relación entre texto e imagen.

Para algunos, el texto puede manifestarse de manera más extensa para describir un fenómeno, adquiriendo de ese modo más importancia que la imagen. Para otros, la imagen expresa por sí misma la idea básica y el texto, si existe, se convierte en accesorio. Esta exhibición, La palabra imaginada, del artista plástico Rafael Trelles nos obliga a pensar de manera crítica esa relación.

Las 22 piezas que componen esta exhibición

reflejan el mundo del arte a través de las obras literarias y, al mismo tiempo, y de modo indirecto, analizan cómo el mundo literario queda expuesto en la creación artística. Una serie de ideas y reflexiones recurren a lo largo de las piezas. Entre ellas, el placer y el poder de la palabra y de la imagen, la evasión a través de la imaginación, la idea de la transformación, el ejercicio de la metamorfosis, la soledad y la muerte, el cuestionamiento de los esencialismos, el poder que contienen lo asombroso y lo mágico, el enfrentamiento de los seres humanos ante un mundo moderno que los oprime y que los borra, el poder del patriarcado, la importancia del individualismo, entre muchas otras.

Los lenguajes visuales y literarios son igualmente variados, desde imágenes de corte más realista (“Gitano”, “Lilus Kikus”, “Miriam”, “Alice”), a otras impactadas por discursos de corte más irracional.

Es significativo que “Naga” vaya acompañada de un texto de El libro de los seres imaginarios de Jorge Luis Borges. Este libro contiene la descripción de ciento dieciséis monstruos que han poblado las mitologías y las religiones. En El libro de los

seres imaginarios Borges señala: “Ignoramos el sentido del dragón, como ignoramos el sentido del universo, pero algo hay en su imagen que concuerda con la imaginación de los hombres.”

Esta cita puede servir de acercamiento a varias de las piezas de Trelles: “Naga” y “Chilam Balam”, por ejemplo. También se ve en obras de otros discursos y estilos que hacen su aparición en La palabra imaginada a manera de irrupción y alteración de las normas racionales. Por ejemplo, las huellas del surrealismo que aparecen en la novela El reino de este mundo de Alejo Carpentier, presentes en la representación visual de Trelles. O el discurso de lo fantástico en “Axolotl”, la idea del absurdo en “Rhinoceros”, junto a la ambigüedad enigmática del terror a la modernidad de La metamorfosis.

La materialidad del cuerpo es central a esta exhibición. Aparecen cuerpos humanos con distintivas marcas de género, raza y origen histórico, junto a cuerpos transformados, transmutados, hibridizados, cuerpos en evasión.

Observamos el comienzo de un cuerpo (“Sofá”), así como cuerpos creados a través del gesto artístico del carboncillo o la palabra (“Aniuta”) para luego ser cosificados. Y presidiendo todo está la mirada. La pieza basada en un texto de Saramago, Ensayo sobre la ceguera, subraya de manera contundente el reconocimiento de estos cuerpos a través del necesario gesto de mirar, observar con atención y reflexionar acerca de los límites de nuestra conciencia. Después de todo, la pandemia descrita en la novela de Saramago es muy particular, se trata de una ceguera blanca, en donde triunfan los personajes más amorales y los cuerpos otros son prescindibles. La sobrevivencia de los cuerpos descartados de Encancaranublado, con ojos abiertos y alertas sugieren otra posibilidad.

En la teoría psicoanalítica lacaniana, la mirada es el estado mental ansioso que viene con la autoconciencia de que se puede ver y mirar. El efecto psicológico sobre la persona sometida a la mirada es una pérdida de autonomía al

darse cuenta de que él o ella es un objeto visible. ¿Posible entrada al orden simbólico? ¿Qué nos dicen las miradas de esta pieza, aliviadas de haber sobrevivido el naufragio?

Ninguna otra pieza evoca el misterio y convoca la imaginación como The Golem. Si el gólem como fabricación folclórica o mitológica se refiere a la creación de un ser animado a partir de una materia inanimada, metáfora para muchos de lo embrionario, como figura metafórica, la imagen enigmática del gólem que crea Trelles a partir del texto de Meyrink llena al observador de misterio y desasosiego por su fuerza y su poder.

No cabe duda que La palabra imaginada, es una invitación a ejercitar la capacidad de interpretar y producir mensajes, combinando diversos lenguajes desde una perspectiva crítica y creativa, que deslumbrará y perturbará a quien la visite.

This story began with Scheherezade, that excellent storyteller whose narrative ability spares her from imminent death. Her captive gaze and slightly open lips produce the sensation that she is about to tell one of her many stories, where the characters of this exhibition are the protagonists.

Scheherezade is one of the first characters that Rafael Trelles drew in the fall of 2017, in the wake of hurricane María. These characters surface amid a creative process: Trelles mentions that he does not choose the characters, they choose him. As he draws, a text comes to mind, a myth, a novel and then he relates to a literary character. This process changes direction when an exhibition is undertaken. Then, when the artist recalls a text or a particular character, the drawing begins.

That is the birth of The Imagined Word, an exhibition of 22 drawings portraying literary characters that reflect that eternal relationship between visual arts and literature. A relationship that is reinforced by the literary quotes that accompany the drawings.

The quotes are considered clues, sealing the content of the portrait. The process reminds us of the practice by pre-Raphaelites, the 19th century English painters who, on multiple instances engraved on the frame of the painting those verses that they considered essential to the scene.

In The Imagined Word, Trelles interprets and develops characters that come to life from his readings. The neutral color of the paper produces a unique effect in the contrast of light and shadow that emphasize the features of the character.

Likewise, his composition reveals elements that

define such attributes as the character’s social status and vocation, which reference the portrait models of the 17th century in Europe.

Scheherezade, for example, conquers death. Her gaze full confidence signals her victory. The turban and vegetation motifs give us a clue concerning her origin. The quote selected completes the content of the image.

Anna Karenina chooses death as the only solution to the crisis she confronts in life. The mature look on her face and her intense stare indicate her decision. The elegant pose of her hands and her clothes define the character’s social status.

Trelles was inspired by Alexey Kolesov’s portrait of Anna Karenina. Her pose and her dress influence his portrait, not the innocent young woman in Kolosov’s portrait.

Remedios la Bella arrives at her destiny through death. Her face emerging from the paper is depicted like an apparition of a divine being, while her intense gaze makes us witnesses of her ascension to the heavens.

In Black Majesty, the body represents of the exotic sensuality associated with the blackness of the Caribbean, a race that becomes symbol of Caribbean identity. Her sensuality contrasts with the solemn, pained expression that reveals a tragic centuries old history of violence and discrimination.

Alicia, Miriam and Lilus Kikus, each represent a very distinct passage from childhood to adolescence.

Alicia takes on a journey to the unknown relying on the rabbit that will be her guide. Miriam is a grown

woman in the body of a young girl. The severe expression of her face reveals the loss of childhood.

Lilus Kikus presents a character opposite to Miriam.

She refuses to abandon her childhood even as she enters adolescence. She takes refuge in a fantasy world, thus evading the adult world that deprives her of her freedoms.

The transmutation of men into animals is a recurring theme in this exhibition. We see the monstrosity of the human in Rhinoceros, the foolishness associated with the ass in the character of Nick Bottom, and the insecurity and insignificance of Gregory Samsa when he turns into an insect in The Metamorphosis.

We also see, however, in characters that spring from Latin American literature, the transmutation to an animal has having positive connotations. It is a pure being, uncorrupted. The concept of nature plays an important role in Latin America. Not only did the first civilizations enjoy a close relationship with the natural world, it also represents the essence and origin of a national identity.

The transformation into animal is associated with freedom and protection in the figures of Ti Noel, Bouckman and Mackandal in Carpentier’s The Kingdom of this World. Nagas become protective snakes in Borges’s The Book of Imaginary Beings.

Man escapes his corrupt world returning to the origin in Cortazar’s Axolotl. The priest Balam confirms this theory by alerting us of the coming of a world full of negative elements once man turns away from nature. Melquiades, the Gypsy, confirms this through the continuous study of nature that fills him with wisdom, which leads to success in his daily struggles in life.

In Blindness, humans are blinded. Their cruel and selfish instinct is what guides them. The Golem reminds us of the monstrous essence of an incorregible being. Aniuta manifests it. Despite being an extremely submissive character, her

indignant expression denounces the abuse inflicted by humans in extreme situations.

Different visions of Puerto Rico are presented through three selected works. In the 1934 poem

by Luis Palés Matos, Black Majesty, the African heritage is exalted as one of the most important features that form the identity of Puerto Rico.

Encancaranublado, a 1982 short story by Ana Lydia Vega, deals with key issues of the Caribbean reality, such as migration and the political status of Puerto Rico as a Commonwealth of the United States, where Puerto Ricans are isolated in some sort of limbo between their Caribbean neighbors and their US citizenship. Finally, Sofa, the 2017 short story by Cezanne Cardona, reflects a Puerto Rico far removed from the concept of a paradise island.

A sofa is the protagonist and witness of the life of a character who lives in a much deteriorated and sordid Puerto Rico.

As we advance through the exhibition, we approach the characters, observe their facial expressions, search for elements that may relate to us and read the quotes next to the images. We shall reencounter a character that was part of our lives while we read. We may transport ourselves to that place in time and corroborate that the image is of a character with whom we shared that part of our lives.

If the literary work has not been read, upon observing the drawing and reading the quote, an urge to know and understand that character may motivate us to read. If this be the case, while reading the text, the image of the character created by Rafael Trelles may always accompany us, being that image the element that originated such interaction.

La palabra imaginada Laura Galbán

Esta historia comenzó con Scheherezade, esa excelente narradora que se salvó de la muerte inminente por su habilidad de contar cuentos.

Su mirada cautiva y sus labios entreabiertos dan la sensación de comenzar a contar una de sus múltiples historias donde los personajes de esta exposición son los protagonistas.

Schehrezade es uno de los primeros personajes que crea Rafael Trelles durante el otoño de 2017 tras el paso del huracán María. Estos personajes surgen en medio del proceso creativo: Trelles menciona que no elige sus personajes, los personajes lo eligen a él. Mientras va dibujando le viene a la mente un texto, un mito, una novela y entonces asocia la figura con un personaje. Este proceso cambia de rumbo cuando se decide crear una exposición. Es entonces cuando el artista recuerda un texto o un personaje en particular, y de ahí surge el dibujo.

Así nace La palabra imaginada, una exposición de 22 dibujos sobre personajes de literatura donde se puede apreciar la eterna relación entre las artes plásticas y la literatura. Relación que se fortalece al incorporar citas literarias acompañando el dibujo.

Las citas se consideran claves para la imagen sellando el contenido del retrato. Este ejercicio nos recuerda la práctica de los prerrafaelitas, el grupo de pintores ingleses del siglo XIX, los cuales en múltiples ocasiones grababan en el propio marco de su pintura versos que consideran esenciales para la escena.

En La palabra imaginada, Trelles interpreta y desarrolla los personajes que cobran vida en sus lecturas. El color neutro del papel ayuda a crear el juego de luces y sombras, tan importante a la hora de enfatizar ciertos rasgos y expresiones que se quieren destacar en la figura. Aparecen

también en su composición elementos que descifran atributos del personaje, como la clase social, la vocación o aficiones, características que recuerdan las pautas del retrato europeo del Siglo XVII. Scheherezade por ejemplo vence la muerte. Su mirada llena de seguridad señala su victoria. El turbante y los motivos de vegetación nos dan la clave de su origen; la cita elegida entonces sella el contenido de la imagen.

Anna Karenina elige la muerte como la única solución a la crisis que enfrenta en su vida. La madurez visible en el rostro y su mirada intensa nos revelan su decisión. La elegante pose de las manos y la vestimenta indican la posición social del personaje. Trelles se inspiró en el retrato de Anna Karenina de Alexey Kolesov, del cual, sin embargo, solo la pose y la vestimenta le influyeron, ya que el retrato de Kolesov muestra una joven inocente.

Remedios la Bella llega a su destino ideal a través de la muerte. Su rostro emergiendo del papel se presenta como una aparición de un ser divino, y su mirada fija nos convierte en testigos de su elevación a los cielos.

En Majestad Negra. el cuerpo representa el exotismo y sensualidad con que se asocia a la negritud del Caribe, raza que se convierte en símbolo de la identidad caribeña. Esa sensualidad contrasta con la expresión de su rostro solemne, dolido por una trágica historia de siglos de atropello y discriminación.

Alicia, Miriam y Lilus Kikus, muestran de una manera muy diferente el paso de la niñez a la adolescencia. Alicia se aventura a un viaje a

lo desconocido, apoyándose en el conejo que será su guía. Miriam es una mujer adulta en un cuerpo de niña, la dureza en la expresión de su rostro muestra la desaparición de la niñez. Lilus Kikus presenta un personaje contrario a Miriam. Se niega a abandonar la niñez, a pesar de ser ya una adolescente. Se refugia en un mundo de fantasía, evadiendo el mundo adulto que le privaba de muchas libertades.

La transmutación del hombre en animal es un tema recurrente en esta exposición. Vemos lo monstruoso en el ser humano en Rhinoceros, la necedad asociada con el asno en el personaje de Nick Bottom, y la inseguridad e insignificancia de Gregory Samsa al convertirse en insecto en La metamorfosis.

Sin embargo, en personajes que pertenecen a la literatura latinoamericana, la transformación en animal tiene connotaciones positivas. Es un ser puro; no está corrupto. El concepto de naturaleza tiene un papel muy importante en América Latina.

No no solo las primeras civilizaciones disfrutaron de una relación íntima con la naturaleza, sino que, al formar una identidad nacional, la naturaleza pasa a representar la esencia y el origen.

La transformación en animal se asocia con libertad y protección en las figuras de Ti Noel, Boukman, y Mackandal; los Nagas, se convierten en serpientes protectoras; el hombre se evade de su mundo corrupto volviendo al origen en Axolotl. El sacerdote Balam confirma esta teoría al advertir que llegará un mundo lleno de elementos negativos cuando el hombre se aleje de la naturaleza. Melquiades lo confirma a través de su continuo estudio de la naturaleza que lo llena de sabiduría, logrando el éxito en las batallas diarias.

En Ensayo sobre la ceguera, el hombre está ciego.

Su instinto cruel y egoísta es lo que le guía. Nos lo recuerda el Golem que refleja la monstruosa

esencia del ser que es incorregible. Lo manifiesta Aniuta, a pesar de ser un personaje sumamente sumiso, su expresión de ira denuncia el abuso cometido por el ser humano en situaciones extremas.

Diferentes visiones de Puerto Rico se ven a través de tres obras seleccionadas. En el poema de 1934 de Palés Matos, Majestad Negra, se exalta la herencia africana como uno de los rasgos más importantes que forman la identidad de Puerto Rico. Encancaranublado, cuento de 1982, Ana Lydia Vega, trata temas claves de la realidad del Caribe, como la migración y el estatus de Puerto Rico como Estado Libre Asociado, donde el puertorriqueño se presenta aislado, en un limbo entre sus vecinos del Caribe y su ciudadanía estadounidense. Finalmente, Sofá, el cuento de Cezanne Cardona de 2017, refleja un Puerto Rico muy alejado del concepto de isla paradisiaca. Un sofá es el protagonista y testigo de la vida de un personaje que vive en un Puerto Rico deteriorado y sórdido.

Al recorrer esta exposición, nos acercamos al personaje, observamos la expresión en el rostro, buscamos elementos que nos relacionen y leemos la cita al lado de la imagen. Redescubriremos así el personaje que probablemente fue parte de nuestra vida durante el tiempo de una lectura, nos transportaremos a ese momento y comprobaremos que se nos presenta la imagen del personaje con el que convivimos ese tiempo.

En el caso que la obra literaria no hubiese sido leída al observar el dibujo y leer la cita, surgirá una curiosidad por conocer a ese personaje y probablemente se proceda a la lectura. En este caso, mientras se lee el texto, la imagen del personaje creada por Rafael Trelles acompañará en todo momento al lector, siendo la imagen el elemento que originó la comunicación.
