ALEPH Pedro Roth’s Incessant Creativity José Sanjinés A new show by Pedro Roth is always an event.

I called him on Skype to Buenos Aires to talk about ALEPH, the show installed in Point of Contact Gallery.

The conversation took us on many paths and covered many subjects. The truth is that it was Pedro who did most of the talking. I participated now and then, admiring the display of knowledge of one of the great Argentine artists.

Pedro Roth is gifted with a keen curiosity and an extraordinary capacity to establish correspondences between seemingly disparate subjects. His art is a reflection of his restlessly creative intelligence.

ALEPH is named after the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It is a consonant really, alef, the divine passage. Gershom Scholem, the great scholar of the Kabbalah, writes that this silent letter (it acquires meaning only when accompanied by a vowel) is the “beginning of all language and expression.”

But it was the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges who would popularize this quiet letter in world literature.

In one of his most famous stories, “The Aleph,” a pompous writer, Carlos Argentino Daneri, finds an Aleph in the basement of his house and shows it to Borges. ¿An Aleph in a basement? Yes, an Aleph, a little luminous sphere where one is able to see, simultaneously, all that the cosmos contains.

On the back part of the step, toward the right, I saw a small iridescent sphere of almost unbearable brilliance.

At first I thought it was revolving; then I realized that this movement was an illusion created by the dizzying world it bounded. The Aleph’s diameter was probably little more than an inch, but all space was there, actual and undiminished. Each thing (a mirror’s face, let us say) was infinite things, since I distinctly saw it from every angle of the universe.

But how can one express the experience of absolute knowledge — to have seen everything instantaneously? Borges makes use of an ancient rhetorical device studied by Leo Spitzer, that of chaotic enumeration (which, in fact, is not at all chaotic because every selection is determined by subtle correspondences). This is how Borges attempts to express the infinite, simultaneous experience of witnessing the Aleph: I saw the teeming sea; I saw daybreak and nightfall; I saw the multitudes of America; I saw a silvery cobweb in the center of a black pyramid; I saw a splintered labyrinth (it was London); I saw, close up, unending eyes watching themselves in me as in a mirror; I saw all the mirrors on earth and none of them reflected me; […] I saw

the coupling of love and the modification of death; […] and I felt dizzy and wept, for my eyes had seen that secret and conjectured object whose name is common to all men but which no man has looked upon — the unimaginable universe.

When Scholem writes that aleph is “the beginning of every language and expression,” he reminds us that verbal language is only one among many systems of expression, of signification. In response to Borges’ verbal Aleph, Pedro Roth builds a painted Aleph, which dialogues with all the connotations of the written one and generates many more in an explosion of color and meaning. Roth’s ALEPH is a model of infinite creativity, of the freedom of imagination, and of its secret compass.

I asked Roth to talk to me about the concept behind ALEPH. Pedro Roth: The idea was to build a universe made up of 500 images, which I painted on paper napkins of all the cafés in Buenos Aires — to generate a work that means whatever you want it to mean with all the images that conform it. It was first shown in the Jewish Museum of Buenos Aires as part of an event in honor of Borges. I called it the Buenos Aires Aleph (el Aleph Porteño), an Aleph of the Buenos Aires cafés. It is the central part of the show installed in Point of Contact Gallery, but ALEPH is much larger, more complex, because it incorporates many other works on paper, works laden with different meanings.

José Sanjinés: A difference between your Aleph and Borges’ Aleph is that to “see” the one written by Borges one has to sit down and read, while to “read” yours (I say “read” because it has its own syntax), one has to move around the gallery. Immobility is, in fact, a theme in “The Aleph.”

Borges, the character, has to be immobile to witness the dizzying spectacle in the incandescent sphere.

PR: The viewer is the reference. For a spectacle to happen the viewer has to be motionless, seated in the theater, in the auditorium, in the cinema. But since works of art are motionless, to see them in a museum one has to move about, particularly with sculpture. That is why

JS: When I met you, you were sitting in the Florida Garden. You were working with color markers on a piece that was part of series in an accordion book. A portable paradise you could slide in your pocket and continue to work wherever you went. Now that I think about it, every time I saw you in a café you were always working on your visual art, while at the same time conducting conversations with artists and friends.

Ideas about art and social concerns seemed to gather people around your table.

There is a scene in the film La ballena va llena (The Whale Goes Full ) that benefits from your nonstop creativity to make a point that’s both serious and humorous. It takes place in a café. A character in the film gets annoyed with the project to build a ship in which refugees would be transformed into works of art so that they could gain admission to the safety of museums in Europe and the United States. That rather reactionary character is angry because you don’t stop drawing: “Can I ask you a favor Pedro,” he says, “could you stop drawing a little and pay attention to what we are talking?” “I’m listening,” you respond, still looking down at the piece on which you are working.

You have worked in many media. This time your painted napkins point to the world of the cafés …

PR: For me, the cafés are a very important part of my life. They are a place to communicate with others, a place where one waits to find someone, but doesn’t really know who he is going to find. The napkins are emblems where I link my drawing with all these places and people; they are like links in a chain. I called it the Buenos Aires Aleph because in a way every café is an Aleph, and to fill a wall with all those napkins is a way of transforming the cafés in Buenos Aires into a great space. It’s their representation.

JS: The ALEPH in Point of Contact exhibits the 500 napkins, as well as 300 other of your works on paper, a framed series that belongs to the gallery’s permanent collection, and a livre d’artiste you did with Pedro Cuperman, La mujer del río (The Woman of the River).

As in cinema, the principal, the most recurrent sign in this constellation of more than 800 pieces is the representation of the human face. When I was walking through the streets of Saint Petersburg this

summer, seeing so many and so different faces go past me, I felt that all the glances were a single glance, that all the faces were a single face. I feel something similar when I transit with my sight the images in your ALEPH. PR: In Hebrew there is no singular form for the word “face”. “Panim” — due to its gesturality, “face” is always in the plural. One connects with someone else’s curiosity. Absent faces produce absence.

JS: Hands, too, are often present in your ALEPH. Hands, as Pedro Cuperman wrote, “with extended fingers that point at nothing, that is, they don’t carry any symbolic load, they simply stand for what is seen, simply.” But your hands, elongated and mythical, skillful and extraordinary, are also indexes of what they do, signs of certain forms of work.

PR: My hands are signs of resistance. In this world where almost nothing is done with the hands, to oppose the disappearance of manual skills is linked to the representation of what I draw. To realize that, at the end, the most complex of tools does not replace the one who uses it. Hands are the connection.

JS: In one of the gallery’s walls we read a text that seems to be a commentary on the phenomenon of screens. Luminescent computerized devices appear to be taking over the world; they are in our houses, we carry them in our pockets. This, in part, is what you write:

Before we were the Aleph, now we are transporters of the Aleph.

We become dependent, enslaved by this invention.

We trust our memory to it, our knowledge. We fear something may happen to it.

We talk about viruses in our systems, something that is out there, which may contaminate us.

PR: I say that in “The Aleph” Borges invented the internet — but he stayed in the library. At the end of the story, Borges destroys the Aleph, much like rabbi Loew destroys the Golem.

JS: To have access to infinite knowledge doesn’t mean that you can make something beautiful with it. In “The Aleph,” Carlos Argentino uses it to try to write a meandering and pretentious opus magnum, which Borges despises.

PR: All that character could do was to make lists and descriptions. He wasn’t prepared. He represents so many people.

JS: There are a few visible words written amidst the images in your ALEPH. One of them spells the name of Estela Canto, a woman closely related to Borges’ life and work. She is, in particular, linked

to an autobiographical aspect of “The Aleph” that Borges considered very important.

PR: Estela Canto was Borges’ lover. But she got together with him not because… how can I put it?

As a Hungarian friend told me when I was coming here on the boat, “young man, stick with people of gold, at least you’ll end up golden.” You see? So Borges writes “El Aleph”, which is the most marketable, sparkling, and wonderful thing he did in all his literature and he dedicates it to Estela Canto. But in it, he confesses his love for another woman (Beatriz, in the story). He offers the manuscript as a gift to Estela and asks her to please type it up for him.

JS: Canto would later auction the manuscript at Sotheby’s and sell it for thirty thousand dollars to Spain’s National Library, in Madrid, where it must be resting in a basement. An unseen Aleph.

PR: And well, after Borges’ death Estela Canto takes revenge and writes a book in which she says that Borges was little less than impotent.

JS: What you just told me is an important contribution not only to the meanings sparked by your ALEPH, but also to the criticism surrounding one of the most studied and discussed texts by Borges. And this contribution is a fruit of your friendship with Borges, whom you often visited in his house. In fact, you were a friend of many of the great Argentine artists and writers: Xul Solar, Bioy Casares, Antonio Berni, Federico Peralta Ramos …

PR: I had the privilege to know and to be close to almost all the most important people of my time in Argentina, from the sixties to today. My work gave me the opportunity to achieve that. I think I was a gear and a witness of the cultural scene of Buenos Aires. The number of people with whom I related is endless; it’s impossible to go over the list because there is always someone I’m going to forget. I moved along them looking and listening, and I listened. I built myself with all those bricks. It’s a world — the world of Buenos Aires culture.

JS: Talking about friendships, your show is dedicated to Pedro Cuperman, with whom you collaborated many times. In fact, images of two of your collaborative works of verbal and visual art are part of the exhibition: La mujer del río and Storytelling. In the latter, the two of you constructed a story in which to tell is to show and to show is to tell.

PR: Pedro and I were twins. We basically had nothing to explain to each other as we worked. There were only endless conversations, which resulted in works. I was like a door to help carry forward that work/conversation and to shed some light on his work as well. This is how we carried on our friendship, doing.

JS:

ALEPH Pedro Roth: La creatividad incesante José Sanjinés Un nuevo show de Pedro Roth es siempre un acontecimiento.

Lo llamé por Skype a Buenos Aires para hablar sobre ALEPH, la muestra que se exhibe en Point of Contact Gallery, Syracuse, Nueva York. La conversación nos llevó por muchas rutas y terminamos hablando de tantos otros temas. La verdad es que más que nada era Pedro quien hablaba. Yo participaba de tanto en tanto, admirado por el inmenso conocimiento de uno de los grandes artistas argentinos.

Pedro Roth goza de una extraordinaria capacidad para establecer correspondencias entre temas en apariencia dispares. Su obra es un reflejo de su inagotable curiosidad intelectual y de su vasto saber del arte y de las ideas sobre el arte.

ALEPH lleva el nombre de la primera letra del alfabeto hebreo, una consonante en realidad, alef, el pasaje divino. Gershom Scholem, el gran estudioso de la cábala, dice que esa silenciosa letra (adquiere sonido sólo cuando acompaña un vocal) es el “comienzo de toda lengua y expresión.”

Pero fue Jorge Luis Borges quien hizo popular a esta recatada letra en la literatura universal. Uno de los protagonistas de su famoso cuento “El Aleph”, Carlos Argentino Daneri, un escritor desagradable y pomposo encuentra un Aleph en el sótano del comedor de su casa y se lo muestra a Borges. El Aleph está en la parte inferior del escalón que conduce al sótano. ¿Un Aleph en un sótano? Sí, un Aleph, una pequeña esfera luminosa que contiene, y en la cual se pueden ver, todas las cosas y todos los eventos del espacio cósmico.

En la parte inferior del escalón, hacia la derecha, vi una pequeña esfera tornasolada, de casi intolerable fulgor.

Al principio la creí giratoria; luego comprendí que ese movimiento era una ilusión producida por los vertiginosos espectáculos que encerraba. El diámetro del Aleph sería de dos o tres centímetros, pero el espacio cósmico estaba ahí, sin disminución de tamaño. Cada cosa (la luna del espejo, digamos) era infinitas cosas, porque yo claramente la veía desde todos los puntos del universo.

¿Pero cómo poner en palabras, cómo expresar la experiencia del conocimiento absoluto? ¿La experiencia de ver y saberlo todo, instantánea y simultáneamente? Para ello Borges recurre a un viejo procedimiento retórico estudiado por Leo Spitzer: la enumeración caótica (que en el fondo no es nada caótica porque toda selección esta marcada por sutiles correspondencias). Así es como Borges intenta expresar la experiencia de presenciar el Aleph: expresar la experiencia de presenciar el Aleph:

expresar la experiencia de presenciar el Aleph: Vi el populoso mar, vi el alba y la tarde, vi las muchedumbres de América, vi una plateada telaraña en el centro de una negra pirámide, vi un laberinto roto (era Londres), vi interminables ojos inmediatos escrutándose en mi como en un espejo, vi todos los espejos del planeta y ninguno me reflejó. […] vi el engranaje del amor y la modificación de la muerte. […] y lloré, porque mis ojos habían visto ese objeto secreto y conjetural, cuyo nombre usurpan los hombres, pero que ningún hombre ha mirado: el inconcebible universo.

Cuando Scholem dice que alef es el “comienzo de toda lengua y expresión” nos recuerda que el lenguaje verbal es sólo uno de los muchos sistemas de expresión, de significación. En respuesta al Aleph verbal de Borges, Roth construye un Aleph pintado que entabla diálogo con todas las connotaciones e incitaciones del de Borges, y que genera muchas más en una explosión de significados y de color.

El ALEPH de Roth es un modelo de la creatividad infinita, de la imaginación liberada, y de su secreta brújula.

Le pregunté a Pedro sobre el concepto de ALEPH. Pedro Roth: La idea fue armar un universo compuesto de 500 imágenes dibujadas a color en servilletas de todos los bares de Buenos Aires — generar una obra que signifique lo que vos quieras con todas la imágenes que lo conforman. El Museo Judío de Buenos Aires expuso esa muestra de servilletas durante un homenaje a Borges. Lo llamé el Aleph Porteño, un Aleph de los cafés de Buenos Aires. Es el corazón de la muestra instalada en Point of Contact Gallery, pero este nuevo ALEPH es más grande y complejo porque incorpora muchas obras mías en papel, así que está cargada con muchos otros sentidos.

José Sanjinés: Una diferencia entre tu Aleph y el de Borges es que para “ver” el escrito por Borges uno tiene que sentarse y leer, mientras que para “leer” el tuyo (digo “leer” porque tiene su propia sintaxis) hay que moverse por la galería. La inmovilidad es un tema en “El Aleph”; Borges, el personaje, tiene que mantenerse inmóvil para presenciar

PR: El observador es la referencia, para que exista un espectáculo el espectador tiene que estar inmóvil: la platea, la butaca, el palco. En cambio para mirar obras de arte en un museo, ya que ellas son inmóviles, se requiere andar, sobre todo en la escultura. El Aleph de Borges pertenece a la especie que tiene que ver con el movimiento inherente. Por eso Borges tenía que estar inmóvil para apreciar el Aleph.

JS: Cuando te conocí estabas sentado en el Florida Garden. Trabajabas silenciosamente con marcadores la escena de uno de los marcos del cuaderno acordeón que desplegaste para mi. Un paraíso portable que puedes meter en el bolsillo para seguir trabajando donde te de la gana. Ahora que lo pienso, cada vez que te vi en un café estabas siempre labrando tu arte y a la vez dialogando con artistas y amigos.

Hay una escena de la película La ballena va llena, de la cual eres un protagonista, que toma provecho de tu constante creatividad para añadir un mensaje a la vez serio y cómico. La escena ocurre en un café. Un personaje revela contra el costoso proyecto de construir un barco en el que los refugiados se conviertan en obras de arte, de tal manera que puedan ser así ser admitidos en los museos de Europa y Estados Unidos. Ese personaje reaccionario se enfada porque no dejas de dibujar durante la conversación y te reprocha: “Te puedo pedir un favor, Pedro, puedes dejar de dibujar un poco y prestar atención a lo que estamos hablando?” “Estoy escuchando” le contestas dulcemente sin dejar de prestar atención en lo que trabajas.

Tus servilletas pintadas señalan el mundo de los cafés …

PR: Para mi los cafés son una parte importante de mi vida. Un lugar para comunicarse, un lugar donde uno espera encontrar a alguien pero en realidad no sabe con quien se va a encontrar. Las servilletas son emblemas, donde yo uno mi dibujo con todos estos lugares y la gente, son cómo eslabones de una cadena. A la obra primero le puse Aleph Porteño porque de alguna manera cada café es un Aleph, y llenar una pared con todas las servilletas lleva a transformar todos los cafés de Buenos Aires en un gran espacio, y esta es su representación.

JS: De tu Aleph Porteño nace este ALEPH de Point of Contact Gallery. Además de las 500 servilletas éste exhibe 300 otros dibujos tuyos en papel, una serie de pinturas enmarcadas que son parte de la

colección permanente de la galería, y La mujer del río, un bello livre d’artiste que hiciste con Pedro Cuperman.

El principal signo en esta constelación de más de 800 piezas, el que más recurre es, como en el cine, la representación del rostro humano. Caminando por las calles de San Petersburgo este verano, viendo pasar tantos y tan diversos rostros sentí, de pronto, que todas las miradas eran una sola mirada, que todos los rostros son un solo rostro. Siento algo parecido al recorrer con la vista las imágenes de ALEPH. PR: En hebreo no hay rostro en singular. “Panim”, por la gestualidad el rostro siempre es en plural.

Uno se conecta con la curiosidad del otro. Los rostros ausentes producen ausencia.

JS: Las manos son también son una presencia importante en tu obra. Manos, como observó Pedro Cuperman, con “dedos extendidos que nada señalan, es decir, no pretenden ninguna carga simbólica, sino que valen como eso que se ve, simplemente”. Pero esas manos lúbricas y míticas, extraordinarias y hábiles, son también un signo, un índice de lo que hacen, emblemas de ciertas formas de trabajo.

PR: Mis manos son un signo de resistencia, en este mundo donde ya nada se hace con las manos, resistir que la manualidad desparezca tiene que ver con la representación de lo que yo dibujo. Darse cuenta que al fin y al cabo la herramienta por más compleja que sea no remplaza al operador. Las manos son la conexión.

JS: Una de las paredes de la galería exhibe un texto escrito en el que pareces hacer un comentario sobre el fenómeno de las pantallas luminosas que parecen estarse apoderando del mundo. Una red de escaparates interconectados que están en todas parte. En nuestras casas, en nuestros bolsillos. Esto, en parte, es lo que escribes:

Antes éramos el Aleph, ahora somos portadores del Aleph.

Nos volvimos dependientes, esclavos de esta invención.

Hablamos de él como si fuese un síntoma.

Algo que está ahí afuera. De lo que nos hemos contaminado.

Le confiamos nuestra memoria, el saber. Tenemos miedo de que le pase algo.

PR: Yo digo que en “El Aleph” Borges inventó el internet — pero él se quedó en la biblioteca. En el cuento Borges destruye el Aleph, como el rabino Loew destruye el Golem.

JS: Tener acceso al conocimiento absoluto no garantiza que puedas hacer algo bello con ello.

En “El Aleph” Carlos Argentino utilizaba el Aleph para tratar de escribir un pretensioso opus magnum.

Cosas que Borges despreciaba.

PR:

El tipo hacía descripciones y listas. No estaba preparado. Representa a tanta gente.

JS: Hay algunas palabras escritas que se destacan entre los dibujos de tu ALEPH. Entre ellas se puede leer claramente el nombre de Estela Canto, una mujer muy vinculada con la vida y obra de Borges, y en particular con un tema autobiográfico en “El Aleph” que Borges consideraba muy importante.

PR: Estela Canto fue novia de Borges. Pero ella se reunió con Borges no por… cómo te puedo decir … como me decía a mi un húngaro cuando venía yo en el barco para acá: “Vos, pibe, juntate con gente de oro por lo menos vas a quedar dorado.” Borges escribe “El Aleph”, que es el cuento más marketinero y chispeante, más maravilloso y potente que hizo en toda su literatura y se lo dedica a Estela Canto, y ahí le confiesa a ella su amor por otra mujer (Beatriz, en el cuento). Le regala a Estela el manuscrito y le pide que por favor se lo pase a máquina.

JS: Después de la muerte de Borges ella subasta el manuscrito en Sotheby’s y lo vende por treinta mil dólares a la Biblioteca Nacional de España en Madrid, donde estará en algún sótano — un Aleph no visto…

PR:

Y se venga de Borges escribiendo un libro donde dice que él era poco menos que impotente.

JS: Queda dorada pero no es de oro. Lo que me dices es una importante contribución no sólo al universo de significados de tu ALEPH, mas a la órbita crítica que gira alrededor de uno de los cuentos más estudiados de la literatura en español. Lo que nos das es un fruto de tu amistad con Borges a quien visitabas con frecuencia. Fuiste también amigo muchos otros grandes artistas y escritores argentinos: Xul Solar, Bioy Casares, Antonio Berni, Federico Peralta…

PR: Tuve el privilegio de convivir y conocer a casi todos los personajes más importantes de mi tiempo de la década del 60 hasta hoy en la Argentina. Mi trabajo me dio la oportunidad de lograr esto. Y yo creo que fui un engranaje y un testigo de esta cultura porteña, es interminable la cantidad de gente con la que me relacioné, y es innombrable la lista ya que siempre de alguien me voy a olvidar. Fui mirado y vi fui escuchado, y escuché. Yo me construí con todos estos ladrillos. En fin un mundo, el mundo de la cultura de Buenos Aries.

JS: Hablando de amistad, dedicas tu muestra a Pedro Cuperman, con quien colaboraste muchas veces. Veo que algunos de vuestros trabajos colaborativos de arte verbal y visual son parte de la exhibición: La mujer del río y Storytelling, por ejemplo. Este último es una historia en la cual el contar es mostrar y en el mostrar es contar, o cantar.

PR: Pedro y yo éramos gemelos, prácticamente no teníamos que aclarar nada entre nosotros. Eran solo conversaciones infinitas. Que terminaban en obras. Yo era cómo una puerta para llevar adelante esta conversación obra y para echar luz sobre su propia obra también. Esta era la manera que llevamos adelante nuestra amistad, haciendo.

JS:

No hay vacación en una vocación.
