Conversation with ANA TISCORNIA

Pedro Cuperman: Well, Ana, it is curious because at first I agreed with you that your work for the exhibition represents a kind of architecture of catastrophe. But now I think that it is something else: a montage. The word architecture gives it an organized and logical sense—it connotes construction. Montage, instead, secretly implies juxtaposition, as well as a narrative goal hidden in the work. The word montage contains an element of cinematography or narrative construction.

Ana Tiscornia: Yes, well, I don’t know if I have a definite narrative goal, in any case not in the sense of a representation. There is something else, no doubt, but little by little I went from feeling that I was making some sort of statement through this work, to the realization that this piece ends up being my way of dealing with reality.

It’s a reality that I don’t understand too well—the work, then, becomes sort of an attempt to organize things. Now, the contradiction that you saw between architecture and catastrophe is something that is there, ex professo. At some point I recaptured my story with architecture, I decided to use the language of architecture, and I decided to do so in a paradoxical way, in a way in which architecture doesn’t use it.

PC: That’s where I wanted to introduce a second problem, which is the theme of space, because the show’s title has the word time in it, but everything happens in a sort of space where there is an explosion.

AT: Precisely.

PC: Then the question could be: Is the explosion from the inside out, or outside in?

AT: For a long time I thought that it was one way, now I think that it is both ways.

PC: Ah, because I sense it in the disposition of the post-explosion fragments, there is a conceptual attack of the space of representation, that is to say, the space of the gallery, one that demands from the viewer a sort of reconstruction, reintegration of the work. Am I wrong?

AT: No, no, there is certainly an intention to let the viewers sort it out, because I don’t know how to sort it out for them. Which means that the viewer needs to work things out with this piece, they may end up sorting things out in many different ways that I cannot foresee, and I welcome those reconstructions. The explosion is from within and from without…

PC: Of course, with regard to the space of representation…

AT: Your idea that there is a confrontation with the space of representation is true. There is something in my work that attempts to challenge that space, and even more, the very concept of representation.

PC: In your reflection about this artistic process you have used the expression, “when I arrive to the first image…” that is, you summon a sort of moment of beginning, a genesis, and then, after the first image comes the dislocation, and that is where I sensed the presence of the montage. I felt that there is a kind of roman noir, a sort of hidden intention, which is the show. It also has something of the detective novel, because one finds the integrating elements at the end of the process. In the detective novel, the detective, the one who interprets, has to reconstruct. Here, the viewer has to reconstruct in a certain way, and from there we get the idea of a tale with a hidden intention.

AT: Well, in fact there is a point of departure and some of the strategy of the detective novel, although I had never thought of it in those terms. But I understand that you can put it in those terms because I do hide the first image. I don’t want to reveal in an obvious way what is the origin.

PC: Like the murderer…

AT: Of course, in a dialogue with you, talking about the process one reveals things. But I want the viewer to find his or her own way to those things, and to their own diverse understanding of things…

PC: Which means that your aesthetic element is to force the viewer to be a reader of a sort of detective story, and at the same time, of a plastic experience in which he or she is present. The viewer walks into the gallery and sees that catastrophe. They have to ask two questions: “How did all this begin?” and “Who done it?” That is, the artist is the assassin and the spectator the detective. It makes me think of a Borges’ story, Death and The Compass, where there are itineraries that lead to…

AT: Yeah, but I’m not the murderer, I am yet another interpreter looking for the killer.

PC: That’s what murderers usually say… [LAUGHTER] PC: Then, what is my function? Am I the police? [MORE LAUGHTER] PC: Well… this interests me because there is something at the aesthetic level that is a link with the surrealist tradition, which is the opposition between the premeditated and the unforeseeable, because you generate a tale, but it is not a closed one. here is a kind of premeditation, but the spectator’s performance is unpredictable, and this is an element that interests me because of Point of Contact, which is a bridge to verbal language, to

narrative, to written language, which is also part of your story because you are a writer. And there is the theme of time, which in some way brings about a question mark. I would like you to expand on the role that time plays in your work, now that I am reading it as a kind of geometry, a kind of narrative tale, that is to say, as time linked to your personal history, to your life as an artist, with all the vicissitudes your work has gone through, which is to say that this work would be a sort of climax, a moment of your life as a creator.

AT: There is that. On the other hand there is a historical time, one which I refer to in my work—hence the theme of repetition, which is veiled, but which is part of this thing that has always been an obsession in my work.

PC: And that historical time is also a political theme, true?

AT: Yes. PC: And it is an aspect of time that is linked to your personal history.

AT: No doubt. One cannot do artistic work that is not oneself. My beginnings in art were during the Uruguayan dictatorship and that is something that marked me a lot. From there on one begins to socialize personal experiences.

PC: Then, I don’t know if this is conscious, but it makes me think that the explosion and the demand for reconstruction as a metaphor, and the catastrophe is the dictatorship.

AT: The catastrophe is the dictatorship, but so, too, are the current wars. Catastrophe is not only the past. It seems to me that the political present is also a catastrophe.

PC: Is your development as an artist also part of that catastrophe?

AT: In some way it is, in the sense that I wish to give it an order.

PC: That’s why you talk about an unannounced event, isn’t it? then found through a geometrical ordering.

AT: My recent art is full of paradoxes, always. Many of which I create consciously. The bond between architecture—a language of construction par excellence—with that of destruction, is a thing totally done exprofesso, one of those conscious things in my work. Not only that, but also the fact that in the language of architecture, many of those things that are now tridimensional began as two-dimensional drawings, as an architectural plan. What the architectural plan has is that it speaks of a project. It doesn’t talk about a constructed thing. This catastrophe is the catastrophe of the project.

PC: Sure, in architecture there are two moments—the project and the finished work. One talks about genesis, about the imaginary, and then back to the theme: that the paradox is in your imaginary. Somehow there is an antithesis, an antithetic element, an attempt to construct, to organize, to create a logical space, and also, a need to unsettle, to dismantle, without letting go of the frontiers of what is a work of art.

AT: Yes, of course.

PC: Because if not, it would become another kind of artistic experience that doesn’t interest you. That is why I asked you about the inside and the outside. The spectators don’t need to go out to the street to see if the trees are still there. They accept the frame that you offer them and they have to work within that space. What one can gather from the fragments, from the displacement of your creative world, is rather organized. The pieces have a structure. That shows in a certain way your definitive distancing from the surrealist ethos; from the internal. It offers a kind of optimism that probably comes from your political tradition. It truly reveals an attempt to shed any form of irrationality. It may be a catastrophe, but things fall into place. The objects are fragmentary, they come and go out of a wall, but they have a form, an organic geometry and a logic.

AT: It’s interesting what you say, it gives me something to think about further in relation to my work.

PC: Maybe in all of this there is a hope that has to do with your political tradition.

AT: It has to do with politics and with my background in architecture, and a sort of rationalist conception that falls within modernism and so on; something one now looks at with nostalgia. What I find interesting is that you see that the thing exploded, but that it exploded in pieces that have an order.

PC: Which means that it is re-constructible, there is optimism…

AT: There is an effort to put it back together, but in a new identity, not to reconstruct it because I’m doubtful about that. Part of that which is ordered is my own effort to give it a new organization, because that is what the work is about—ordering those fragments.

PC: There, that is the poetic element, a rhetoric with a minimal reading code, which allows for a poetics of hope.

The word hope contains a notion of time. We watch the loss of a project as we embark on another.

Pedro Cuperman: Bueno Ana, es curioso porque al principio estaba de acuerdo con vos en que esta obra representa una cierta arquitectura de la catástrofe. Pero ahora creo que es otra cosa: un montaje. La palabra arquitectura le da un sentido organizado y lógico, tiene una connotación de construcción. En cambio la palabra montaje tiene escondida detrás la yuxtaposición, y además un objetivo narrativo escondido detrás de la obra. La palabra montaje tiene un elemento de construcción cinematográfica, o narrativa.

Ana Tiscornia: Sí, bueno, yo no sé si tengo un objetivo de tipo narrativo definitivo, en todo caso no en el sentido de una representación. Hay algo atrás, sin duda, pero poco a poco yo he ido pasando de sentir que enunciaba algún tipo de statement a través de la obra, a darme cuenta que la obra termina siendo mi manera de lidiar con la realidad. Una realidad que no entiendo demasiado y entonces, la obra, es una especie de intento de organizar las cosas. Ahora, esa contradicción que vos viste entre la arquitectura y la catástrofe, es una cosa que está ahí de ex profeso. En algún momento yo recuperé mi propia historia con la arquitectura, decidí usar el lenguaje arquitectónico y lo decidí usar de una manera paradojal, de una manera que la arquitectura no lo usa.

PC: Ahí es donde yo quería introducir un segundo problema, que es el tema del espacio, porque en el título de la muestra, está la palabra tiempo, pero todo ocurre en un tipo de espacio, donde hay un estallido.

AT: Efectivamente.

PC: La pregunta puede ser: ¿El estallido es de adentro para afuera, o de afuera para adentro?

AT: Por mucho tiempo pensé que era de una manera. Ahora pienso que es de las dos.

PC: Ajá, porque lo que presiento en la manera en que están dispuestos los fragmentos del post estallido, es que hay un ataque conceptual al espacio de la representación, o sea, la galería, y que exige del espectador un cierto trabajo de rearmado, de reintegración. ¿Me equivoco?

AT: No, no, sin duda hay un propósito de que el espectador tenga que arreglárselas, porque yo no sé cómo arreglárselas yo. O sea, el espectador necesita hacer su trabajo con esto, y puede hacer muchos trabajos distintos que yo no puedo prever, y bienvenidos esos trabajos. El estallido es de adentro y de afuera…

PC: Claro, y en lo que concierne al espacio de la representación…

AT: Eso que vos planteas que es una confrontación con el espacio de la representación, es cierto. Hay algo en mi trabajo que trata de desafiar a ese espacio, más aun, al propio concepto de la representación.

PC: En tu reflexión sobre este proceso artístico has usado una frase, “cuando llego a la imagen primera…” o sea, suscitas una especie de momento de comienzo, de génesis, y entonces, después de la imagen primera viene el disloque, y es ahí es donde sentí el tema del montaje. Sentí que hay una suerte de novela negra ahí, una especie de intención oculta que es el show. Tiene algo de novela detectivesca, porque las claves se integran al final del proceso. En la novela detectivesca, el detective, el que interpreta, tiene que regresar al principio, reconstruir. O sea que el espectador tiene que de alguna manera reconstruir, y de ahí la idea del relato donde la intención está oculta.

AT: Bueno, efectivamente hay un punto de origen y algo de la estrategia de la novela detectivesca aunque nunca lo había pensado en esos términos. Pero entiendo que se puede poner en esos términos ya que yo escondo esa primera imagen. No quiero develar de una manera obvia cual es el origen.

PC: Como el asesino…

AT: Claro, en un diálogo contigo, para hablar del proceso, uno cuenta cosas, pero yo quiero que a esas cosas llegue el espectador, a sus propias diversas cosas…

PC: O sea que el elemento estético tuyo, es realmente forzar al espectador a ser lector de una especie de relato detectivesco, y al mismo tiempo de una experiencia plástica en la que está presente. El espectador entra a la galería y ve esa catástrofe; esa geometría catastrófica. Tiene que hacerse dos preguntas. Se hace muchas, pero yo creo que dos preguntas: ¿Cómo empezó todo esto? y ¿Quién es el culpable? O sea que el artista como asesino y el espectador como detective. Me hace pensar en uno de esos cuentos de Borges, La muerte y la brújula, donde hay itinerarios que están dispersos…

AT: Claro, pero yo no soy el asesino, soy otro intérprete más, que estoy buscando al asesino.

PC: Es lo que generalmente dicen los asesinos… [RISAS] PC: Y entonces… ¿Cuál es mi papel? ¿Yo soy el policía? [MÁS RISAS] PC: Bueno…me interesa esto porque además hay algo dentro del plano estético que se liga con toda la tradición surrealista, que es una oposición entre lo premeditado y lo imprevisible, porque vos generás un relato, pero no es un relato cerrado. Hay una especie de premeditación, pero el performance del espectador

puede ser imprevisible, y creo que este es un elemento que me interesa por Point of Contact, que es un puente con el lenguaje verbal, con la narrativa, con el lenguaje escrito, que es también parte de tu historia porque vos sos escritora. Además el tema del tiempo, de alguna manera genera un signo de pregunta. Me gustaría que amplíes sobre esa utilización del tiempo en tu obra, cuando estoy leyéndola, ahora como una especie de geometría, como un relato narrativo o sea que el tiempo está ligado con tu historia personal, con tu historia como artista, y con todas las vicisitudes que atravesó tu obra, o sea que esta obra sería una especie de clímax, un momento de tu vida como creadora.

AT: Por un lado eso, y por un lado hay un tiempo histórico al que yo me refiero aquí, por eso está el tema de la repetición, por ese tiempo histórico, que está como escondido, pero que es parte de esta cosa, que siempre ha sido una obsesión en mi obra, ese tema.

PC: Y ese tiempo histórico es un tiempo político también, ¿verdad?

AT: Sí.

PC: Y es un tiempo que está ligado a tu historia personal.

AT: Sin duda. Uno no puede hacer una obra que no sea uno. Mis inicios en el arte fueron durante el período de la dictadura en el Uruguay y eso es algo que me marcó mucho. Uno de ahí en adelante va socializando las experiencias…

PC: Entonces no sé si esto es consciente, pero me hace pensar que esa explosión, y esa exigencia de reconstrucción, es una metáfora, y la catástrofe es la dictadura AT: Bueno la catástrofe es la dictadura, pero también la catástrofe son las guerras del presente. La catástrofe no es solo el pasado. El presente político para mí también es una catástrofe.

PC: Tu desarrollo como artista, ¿es parte de esa catástrofe?

AT: Es parte en alguna medida, en la parte que quiere ordenar eso.

PC: De ahí que hablás de una cosa sorpresiva, ¿no? encontrada con un ordenamiento de la geometría.

AT: Mi arte de unos años para acá está lleno de paradojas, permanentemente. Muchas que yo creo conscientemente. El vínculo de la arquitectura (que por excelencia es un lenguaje de construcción) con la destrucción, es una cosa totalmente hecha de exprofeso, una de las cosas conscientes de la obra. Y no solo eso, sino que en el lenguaje de la arquitectura, aunque muchas de estas cosas ahora son tridimensionales, se

iniciaron en dibujos de dos dimensiones, en planos de arquitectura. El plano de la arquitectura, lo que tiene es que habla de un proyecto. No habla de la cosa construida. Esta catástrofe es la catástrofe del proyecto.

PC: Claro, en la arquitectura hay dos momentos, el proyecto, y la obra construida. Se habla del momento de la génesis, del imaginario, entonces vuelvo al tema: que la paradoja está en tu imaginario. Que de alguna manera hay una antítesis, un elemento antitético, un intento de construir, de organizar, de crear un espacio lógico, y a la vez, una necesidad de descalabrar, de desarticular, sin perder la frontera de lo que es la obra de arte.

AT: Claro.

PC: Porque si no, se volvería otro tipo de experiencia artística que no es tu interés. Por eso te pregunté del afuera y del adentro. El espectador no tiene que salir a la calle a ver si los árboles todavía están ahí. O sea, el espectador acepta las fronteras que tú le ofreces y trabaja sobre eso. Lo que se entiende en los fragmentos, el despedazamiento del mundo tuyo, es bastante organizado. Los pedazos tienen estructura. Eso revela por un lado la separación definitiva del elemento surrealista, de lo interno, y revela un optimismo que debe venir de tu tradición política. Revela realmente un intento de desembarazarse de cualquier irracionalidad. Será una catástrofe pero las cosas tienen un orden. Los objetos están fragmentados, entrando y saliendo de la pared, pero tienen una forma, una geometría orgánica y una lógica.

AT: Me resulta interesante lo que decís, como para seguir pensándolo en relación a mi obra.

PC: En todo esto una esperanza que posiblemente tiene que ver con tu tradición política.

AT: Tiene que ver con la cosa política, y con mis antecedentes en la arquitectura dentro de cierto racionalismo, dentro del modernismo y demás, que uno ya mira con nostalgia. Lo que me resulta interesante es que vos ves que la cosa estalló, pero estalló en pedazos que tienen su orden.

PC: Quiere decir que la cosa es reconstruible, hay un optimismo…

AT: Hay un intento de rearmarlo, pero en una nueva entidad, no de reconstruirlo porque soy escéptica al respecto. Parte de eso que está ordenado es mi propio esfuerzo por darle una nueva organización, porque de eso se trata la obra, de ordenar esos fragmentos.

PC: Ahí está el elemento poético, una retórica una mínima convención de lectura, que permite una poética de la esperanza. La palabra esperanza evoca una noción de tiempo. Uno ve la pérdida de un proyecto mientras la desarrolla como otro proyecto.
