Quizá pueda hablarse de la obra de Analía Segal como un sistema de correspondencias. No es otro el tema que nos propone la presente muestra: Vicisitudes Domésticas; figuras en constante movimiento, que oscilan entre el adentro y el afuera, entre materiales que al encontrarse y profanarse se transfiguran: el adentro se devora lo de afuera, o viceversa, Son ellas mismas y a su vez superposiciones, vinculadas en un constante intercambio de fronteras formado por textos que al coexistir nos ofrecen su propia versión del arte y, sobretodo, de sus metáforas. De ese modo nos ofrecen, además, su propia versión del mundo que nos rodea. Vigencia del intercambio, de la coexistencia del mundo de los objetos, que al privilegiar la metáfora propone la constante resolución de la cotidianidad del mundo de lo plural en arte.

Perhaps one could describe the work of Analía Segal as a system of correspondences. That is none other than the theme proposed in her show: Domestic Vicissitudes; shapes in constant motion that oscillate between the interior and the exterior, between diverse realities, a superposition of materials that transfigure themselves as they encounter and profane each other: the inside devours the outside and vice versa. They are at once individual forms and superpositions, linked in a constant exchange of frontiers formed by texts which, as they coexist, offer us their own version of art and, more importantly, of art’s metaphors.

They offer us something else: their own version of the world that surrounds us. Currency of the exchange, of the coexistence of the world of objects, which, in privileging metaphor, propose, in art, the constant resolution of the everydayness of the world of the plural.

INLAND / EL INTERIOR REFLEXIONES DESDE EL ABISMO GRACIELA TAQUINI

En su obra reciente, su segundo video, Inland / El Interior, la artista argentina Analía Segal logra sintetizar diversos estratos de su background: Es importante tener en cuenta el contexto de su biografía. Creció en Buenos Aires durante la década del setenta, en un momento cuando se trataba de convencer al mundo que los argentinos eran “derechos y humanos,” y donde un cartel en el Obelisco, el monumento más emblemático de Buenos Aires, anunciaba que “el silencio es salud."

Segal casi adolescente estudió cerámica, un camino hacia el cuestionamiento del volumen y la práctica escultórica. La obsesión por la forma y la composición es producto de su rigurosa formación universitaria en diseño. Al mismo tiempo ha elaborado una fuerte capacidad crítica y teórica, incentivada por su condición academica. Así fluyen como geiseres tanto su capacidad de análisis como de escucha, a partir de su experiencia de vivir hace más de doce años en Nueva York y transitar entre dos lenguas todo el tiempo. Tal vez por esto se revela en ella un estado de hiper atención, como si sus sentidos se hubieran exacerbado a través de un diálogo constante entre lo constructivo y lo deconstructivo.

Esa toma de distancia con su país natal, le ha dado una posición abierta ante lo que puede encontrar en sus buceos internos. La constante introspección le permite abordar lo individual para trascenderlo hacia la identificación del espectador.

Analía reconoce como una de sus referentes en el arte argentino la obra de Liliana Porter, cuya puesta en escena de mini comedias/tragedias irónicas, donde conviven lo sublime y lo banal fueron

una sensible inspiración. Existe una coherencia con su producción anterior, imágenes eidéticas que se pueden encontrar como antecedente y leit motifs.

Un estado de emergencia, de presencia de lo interior y recóndito. Algo misterioso parecía brotar de las paredes en su instalación de unas esculturas blancas de apariencia semi blanda que emergían como goteras en lugares insólitos. Incluso en sus diseños / obras se alude a que hay cosas que ocultar debajo de alfombras y felpudos. Una fuerza interior invade y desdobla el diseño de sus azulejos.

El video fue pensado desde el comienzo como un todo audiovisual inseparable. El plano rige por sobre la secuencia horizontal, la narración es de afuera hacia adentro, de la superficie al interior.

La obra es una proyección de pared sobre pared, como una puesta en escena de la realidad / ficción, un escenario domestico. Visualmente el plano de una pared domina la pantalla todo el tiempo. Resulta significativo que la raíz de la palabra “pared” sea la misma que la de la palabra “padre.” Planimetría, abstracción, volumnes o diseño son aparentes. El muro es un escenario proteico, que se desarrolla en una prodigiosa mutación. Empapelados victorianos se van trasmutando de lo decorativo a lo narrativo no lineal, internándose en las profundidades de lo conceptual. Pared casa. Pared tajeada, pared vagina, chorreados de pared menstrual, reglas, que sugieren la transformación de niña en mujer. Pero Segal va más allá del obvio discurso de género para minar cualquier autoritarismo. Se intuye la referencia a la historia de la sexualidad así como a vigilar y castigar: unos barrotes evocan cárceles, tal vez manicomios,

o al menos un lugar para la histeria. Pared libro, pared página, vuelta a lo doméstico en una especie de eterno retorno.

En el fuera de campo, la banda sonora está trabajada como música.

Segal la ha construido a través de sonidos encontrados que forman parte de su repertorio sonoro polifónico, proveniente de mundos muy distintos. Se estructura, igual que la imagen, a través de capas sucesivas donde resuenan alterativamente órdenes y mandatos extraídos de cintas de enseñanza de idiomas. Al principio están dirigidas a un niño o niña, luego a una mujer, en una paulatino transformacion de la identidad.

Otra cita recurrente son grabaciones de cuentos infantiles, que ya había usado en su video anterior La Casa de al Lado/ The House Next Door, inspirado en Los Tres Chanchitos. Completando la trilogía el próximo trabajo tiene como hipertexto al Patito Feo. En INLAND aparece en toda su universalidad el clásico Caperucita Roja, típico relato de iniciación. Sin embargo, a pesar de la falta de reflejos, ya que, aunque se nombra uno, no hay espejos, esta presente el universo de Alicia, aunque de una manera más psicológica que absurda.

Tampoco se trata de evocaciones de fantasmas sino de mitos universales que refieren siempre a situaciones verdaderas, a miedos ancestrales, a un encuentro con lo siniestro en lo cotidiano, lo oscuro en un rayo de sol.

Tanta elaboración es el resultado de la culminación de un año y medio de trabajo de diseño y elaborada postproducción, de pensamiento y autocritica. La riqueza del trabajo de edición, los sentidos abiertos y las asociaciones que despierta, lo abierto de

su discurso en constante contradicción, son desafíos para un espectador cómplice.

Las casas, como las paredes hablan, respiran, ostentan huellas, marcas, tajos, cicatrices Lo que inquieta es que su mundo subterráneo propone una perspectiva inversa, como la de un abismo. Ese estar en el borde, sin certezas, resulta como en el estadío de la calma chicha antes de la tormenta. Analía nos invita a no quedarnos en el umbral, “tap, tap, quién es?” Debemos dar un paso adelante para transponer su tiempo existencial, alrededor de diez minutos reales, pero plenos de tiempo suspendido, de esa manera se penetra en una historia que se va revelando poco a poco, pero nunca del todo; quien quiere oír que oiga.

ANALIA SEGAL: BETWEEN IMAGE/TEXT AND THINGS IN THE WORLD SAUL OSTROW

Analía Segal’s work Inland II is part of a trilogy of video animations whose texts are taken from language learning audiobooks both in English and Spanish (no translations are supplied), other phrases are taken from the fairy tale, Little Red Riding-hood.

Out of habit we may imagine that Inland concerns the asymmetrical economy of image and text. While this in part is true, I would like to suggest that Segal’s work extends this premise and instead manifests the impossible economy that exists between language, image as text, and things in the world – that is the relationship between language in all its forms and the broad-range of events it tries to capture.

When verbalized, things come to be implicitly understood as nothing more than a source of fractured narratives – explanations, descriptions, stories, etc., which is actually the undoing of thing’s physicality and visuality. This is because language is the law-forming center of culture - forming a picture of a completely regulated world, equipped with a single intentionality and plot. Jacques Derrida identified language’s function as a frame - a structure that surrounds and encloses a particular space – language not only enables us to occupy that space but it also forms a barrier - a prophylactic that seeks to exclude external influences. Inversely, Yuri Lotman, who was among the first Soviet structuralists in his book The Structure of the Artistic Text wrote: “Words create verbal-images, which depict a reality that they neither reflect, nor copy.” That is language

creates a world of its’ own.

For Lotman the text/image principle function is that of paradoxically displacing things with new objects, which are language’s references. The irony of this is that the thing need not be a material object, it may be the visualization of an abstract concept or an entity that exists in an individual's mind - like something one remembers or imagines.

Likewise, images can be two-dimensional, such as a photograph of an event, or three-dimensional, such as an architectural model, or embodied such as the personae of a person.

In all of its forms the image supplies a fixed impression of things/events, so much so that the image and the thing it is meant to represent often become confused. This is because the image is often assumed to be a trace of the thing/event itself.

Problematically, it is not, it is merely a specter. The difference between the thing and the image/text is while the latter may be looked at, studied, scanned, dwelled or reflected upon, it is always from a fixed vantage point. It is the proliferation of this affect- the substitution of the sign for the thing that the French theorist Jean Baudrillard in the 1980s identified as the simulacra brought about by mass media’s ability to turn representations into “things.”

Image/ texts are therefore a 'secondary modeling system' in that they recast the primary logic of apprehension into that of language, which confers upon the thing a cultural reality of new mental

possibilities.

The image/text is to be understood as being a grammatical and semantic apparatus whose recipient is transformed into a reader. In this manner the image/ texts comes to be a complement of speech - spoken language – thus the proverbial: one picture is worth a thousand words.

Given these economies, the structure of Inland II leads me to suspect that the source of Segal’s apparent myriad subjects and forms is the gap that exists between the apprehension of things and image/text. The verbal-texts and image/texts within her work are the product of her use of language and image as material propositions, rather than merely narrative ones. Hence Segal’s work denotes a space whose frame can only be indicated - pointed to, but not articulated.

ARTIST STATEMENT

When I dream, I dream in English.

Living in the United States has been a catalyst for my work, influencing my identity and triggering the longing to explore the meaning of "home", the exchange that takes place while inhabiting an interior space and the intricacies and complexity of citizenry.

Personal stories dwell everywhere, and walls are the place where the human body entwines with its habitat. Wallpaper, which exists on the cusp between surface and structure, becomes a backdrop for domestic drama. The transformation of this mundane and ubiquitous interior design element, commonly used to dress the interior of rooms, becomes both in Inland II (video animation) and Implosion (photo installation) a living dermis that simultaneously destabilizes the constructed space as shelter while revealing an inner world. The works in this exhibition navigate the porous boundaries between art, design and architecture intertwining the conceptual, aesthetic and functional nature of the objects that compose the everyday scenarios we live in.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Analía Segal (b. 1967, Rosario-Argentina) is an artist whose work is best known for its unique ability to navigate the porous boundaries between art, design and architecture intertwining the conceptual, aesthetic and functional nature of the objects that surround us. Segal is a Guggenheim Fellow, and has received grants that include: Pollock Krassner Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, Fundación Konex, Fundación Antorchas, Bienal de Diseño-Universidad de Buenos Aires, and 100% Design. Her works have been exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, as well as published in specialized magazines, catalogues and books among them: Trienalle Design Museum, Historia del Diseño en la Argentina, Absoluut Architectuur, Made for love, Simply Material, Sex Design, Ultimas Tendencias, Restroom Design, Fragile, and is included in private and public collections. Segal graduated as a Graphic Designer form the University of Buenos Aires and received her Masters Degree in Art from New York University. She lives and works in New York City since 1999.
