The annual Open Farm Sunday event at Tiptree organised by LEAF (Linking Farming And the Environment) took place in June it gave families and visitors an opportunity to take a trip to the strawberry fields. One of the most popular stalls was Strawberry Tasting where people could sample different varieties before buying a punnet of fresh fruit to take home. There was an opportunity to meet people with a passion for the stars, heritage machinery, farming and jam making As we look ahead to a busy and vibrant summer, our message is simple: we would love to see you. Whether you’re stopping by for a cup of tea in our newly refreshed surroundings, picking up fresh fruit from the farm, or embarking on a guided tour to learn more about what makes Tiptree so unique, your visit means a great deal to us.

As summer arrives, we’re also celebrating one of the highlights of the season - fresh strawberries grown right here on the farm.

Available now in the Jam Shop, these berries are picked at their very best, delivering that unmistakable sweetness and flavour that Tiptree is known for. Perfect enjoyed on their own, paired with cream, or shared with family and friends, they’re a simple pleasure that captures the essence of summer in the village.

For those who’d like to experience more of what happens behind the scenes, we’re excited to invite you to our Public Farm Tours on our tractor and trailer, offering a unique glimpse into the journey from field to jar.

Taking place every Friday from 10th July through to 28th August, the tours run at 12pm and 1pm and provide a fascinating opportunity to explore our working farm. Guests will discover how our fruit is grown and cared for, see the fruit in its natural environment, and discover the craft that goes into creating the products so many people love.

Public farm tours at the tiptree tea room Join us for a tour around our Tiptree fruit farm, nestled in the heart of Essex outside of our visitor centre and factory. Experience the journey of our fresh fruit from vine to jar. The Wilkin family have been farming on this site since 1757 and making jam here since 1885.

Our exciting Public Farm Tours are taking place every Friday from July 10th to August 28th at 12pm and 1pm.

Adults: £12 Under 16s: £7

Tickets are £12 for adults and £7 for under 16s, with children under 3 able to join free of charge. It’s an engaging and educational experience designed to be enjoyed by all ages.

Launching a brand new community magazine is something we're incredibly proud of, and after months of planning it's exciting to finally place the first copy through letterboxes.

Many residents will remember The Tribune, a publication that served Tiptree for many years and became part of village life. We know how fondly it is remembered and we'd like to acknowledge the role it played in keeping the community connected. While Focus marks the beginning of a new chapter, we hope to continue that tradition by celebrating everything that makes Tiptree such a special place to live.

Inside these pages you'll find local news, community groups, clubs, events, charities, businesses and the people who help make this place thrive. Our aim is simple, to produce a magazine that people genuinely enjoy reading while providing local businesses with an effective way of reaching thousands of homes every month.

More Than a Community Fridge – Changing Lives in Tiptree When people hear the name Tiptree Community Hub, many think of our Community Fridge. While rescuing surplus food and helping local people access affordable groceries remains at the heart of what we do, the Hub has become so much more than that. Since beginning as a community fridge 2023, we have grown into a place where friendships are formed, confidence is rebuilt, wellbeing is nurtured, and lives are changed.

Run by a dedicated team of 38 volunteers and food collectors, the Hub works tirelessly to collect surplus food from supermarkets and retailers across Colchester and the surrounding area. Together, we have saved an incredible 77 tonnes of perfectly good food from landfill. Food that would otherwise have been wasted is instead helping local households cope with the rising cost of living while reducing environmental impact.

This Community Fridge is open to everyone.

We are not a foodbank, but an opportunity to prevent surplus food from going to waste.

We are proud to work closely with Tiptree Food Bank, recognising that we each have different but equally important roles within our community. We work in partnership, not competition, bringing together our different strengths to ensure that vulnerable members of our community receive the right support at the right time. By collaborating, we can help more people, reduce duplication, and create a stronger network of care across Tiptree.

The true success of the Hub cannot be measured solely in tonnes of food saved. It is measured in the people who walk through our doors and find support, friendship, and a sense of belonging.

Alongside our Community Fridge, we operate a welcoming café that is open on Fridays and Sundays. During the colder months, it serves as a warm space where people can enjoy refreshments, hot food, and friendly conversation. For many visitors, the café is a lifeline against loneliness and isolation, offering a place where everyone is welcome.

Promoting health and wellbeing is a key part of our mission. Every Wednesday, our popular Move It or Lose It class helps older adults stay active, improve mobility, and maintain independence. This chair-based exercise class is focused on balance and fall prevention. Some places are funded through fundraising and GP referrals, ensuring that those who would benefit most can access the support ,regardless of their financial circumstances.

Twice a month, the Hub hosts Singing for the Brain sessions delivered by an Alzheimer's Society facilitator. These uplifting sessions bring together people living with dementia and their loved ones, using music

Tales on the road Introducing Tiptree Velo, some have you may have noticed groups of "cyclists" gathering outside of the library on Saturday mornings, this group of enthusiasts has now been on the road for sixteen years.

It all began when on moving to the village I soon discovered that the only cycling clubs locally were based in Maldon or Colchester, something needed to be done locally to promote the joys of cycling and get Tiptree moving, a brief collaboration with Cycling UK helped set up a little group not aimed at the traditional cyclist but catering more for anyone who wanted to ride a bike, no fancy bike or kit required, open to all. Cycling UK soon disappeared as their funding was limited, but having started something I couldn't let it fold.

to stimulate memories, improve wellbeing and create joyful shared experiences.

We are passionate about supporting younger members of our community too. Our family litter-picking events, particularly during school holidays, encourage children and parents to work together to care for their environment while learning the value of community action and environmental responsibility.

In partnership with The Outhouse Colchester, we also host a wellbeing youth group for LGBTQ+ young people aged 13 to 19. Meeting on the second and fourth Friday of each month, the group provides a safe, welcoming and judgement-free space where young people can make friends, enjoy activities, share experiences and simply be themselves.

The Hub also works closely with local families of children with SEND needs, offering Drawing and talking therapy sessions that support both children and parents.These projects help to build confidence, resilience and emotional wellbeing within families facing challenges.

Recognising the financial pressures many households face, we are proud to be developing clothing support initiatives for single parents and vulnerable families. Through the provision of good-quality, nearlynew clothing at a nominal cost, we hope to make a practical difference while encouraging sustainable reuse. Our School Uniform Bank also helps families exchange and access school uniforms as children grow, reducing costs and preventing unnecessary waste.

Everything we do is made possible through the generosity, commitment and kindness of our volunteers, supporters, fundraisers and community partners. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier and more connected Tiptree.

The Community Fridge may have been where our journey began, but today Tiptree Community Hub is about so much more than food.

It is about bringing people together, supporting wellbeing, reducing isolation, protecting the environment and creating opportunities for people of all ages to thrive.

Every day, in ways both large and small, the Hub is helping to change lives.

Please get in touch if you're interested in coming out for a ride, there's no age limit, all bikes welcome including power assisted but they must be safe and roadworthy.

With help from some like minded buddies the group grew, we found our name, designed our kit and we were off. Local tearooms have benefitted enormously over the years, and some not so local as some riders have got bitten by the cycling bug a travelled further afield.

There is no membership fee, we are not affiliated to any organisation but do strongly recommend joining Cycling UK who provide insurance cover. The club has been proudly independent and continues to be, happy to to represent Tiptree displaying our Jambusters logo when out and about on the Essex lanes of which there are many. There are many experienced ride leaders in the group and all levels of ability can be catered for, however, under sixteens must be accompanied.

What makes a garden special? Earlier this year, Perrywood asked customers to share how they use and enjoy their gardens, and to our delight, more than 4,500 people responded.

These responses have inspired our 2026 theme, Your Garden, Your Happy Place, celebrating the many different ways gardens bring joy and wellbeing.

The results revealed that 95% of people enjoyed spending time in their gardens, and they are about far more than plants.

We discovered that most of us have small or medium gardens, but size doesn’t matter in the least - nearly everyone agreed being out in their garden is beneficial to health and wellbeing. They are places to relax, connect with nature, spend time with loved ones and enjoy a little peace and quiet away from the busy pace of everyday life.

We asked customers to describe their dream garden, some would love a personal sanctuary: "A beautiful cottage-style courtyard garden that feels like a secret garden."

“A big space that can be enjoyed by all. A nice outdoor seating area for entertaining. Beautiful flowers that attract wildlife.”

Whether it's a colourful border, a childfriendly corner, a productive vegetable patch or simply a favourite chair in the sunshine, every garden has the potential to become a place that lifts your mood and helps you slow down.

Brigadier Rant -Automatic Telephone Intros Are Annoying Very recently I tried to contact a well-known savings and banking establishment over a relatively simple matter. I was obliged to listen to about a minute of preamble, the thrust of which would have insulted the intelligence of the most slow witted, before being directed to a number of options. None of these really addressed my query. I made the most appropriate choice available only to listen to further preamble. This format was repeated a further two times. By the time I was instructed to “hold the line whilst we connect you with one of our operators” I had been just short of three minutes on the line! Furthermore, I heard the dreaded phrase, “We are currently experiencing a high quantity of calls and your wait time could exceed ten minutes.”

We agreed on voice recognition but their technology did not work, so the second option was chosen, a number code. I asked why since I had held the account for decades they had not contacted me many years before to set up the process so that when I needed to contact them it was already in place. The reaction was, “Oh, that’s a good idea” Anyway the security was set up, somewhat ironic as I am closing this particular account and so it serves little future purpose. My instruction was recognised and accepted officially and I left the telephone conversation with polite apologies regarding the cumbersome way in which it had been handled, emanating from the two female employees who had dealt with me.

I nearly gave up but Daphne’s observation, “Don’t hang up Arthur, or you will just go through the same performance another time. Also what else have you got of importance to do today?” I agreed with her first observation but the second, about me having time on my hands, made me bristle a little. There is always gardening, reading, playing bridge and writing my articles which can fulfil my time. However I did finally get through, only to suffer the inconvenience of failing their security procedures, which included questions about my activity on the account over the past years, (one which I have held for over 25 years!) before being abruptly cut off with the words we will write so you will be able to confirm it is you and then you will be able to set up the appropriate security.

Sometimes a five minute job can turn into a marathon, like when you go to wipe up a spot of water only to discover a leaking underground pipe. I am fully aware that in this day and age security is extremely important but since the funds were going from my name to my name then no red flags should have been raised and those holding historic accounts should have their security updated by the initiative of the bank or investment centre concerned.

About two weeks later the letter dropped through the letter box asking me in vague terms to contact them. I abandoned my potting of some newly bought fuchsia, and got straight on the phone suffering the same preamble as before. I was then subjected to nearly fifty

Tiptree Garden Club News & Upcoming Events Thurs. 4th June. The speaker was Bryan Thurlow acting the part of The Perennial Mr. Horace Potter, who started work as an apprentice at Glebe House in Suffolk in 1913. He told this charming story in a Suffolk accent it was an interesting tale told in character.

Thurs. 2nd July the return of Paula Baker, the title of her talk this time is intriguing “So you think you know about hedgehogs!” Paula runs the small charity Suffolk Prickles with a band of adult volunteers, who help with pick-ups, feeding etc. The aim is to help all injured or poorly hedgehogs, that when they are fit, they can be returned to the area where they were originally found. It is a small charity, to help with funds Paula will bring hedgehog related items for sale. Unwanted towels and newspapers in bags will be acceptable as bedding.

Thurs 6th Aug. Alex Stevenson is the speaker and the subject will be Rewilding at Jordan’s Farm. Rewilding the land will help to mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss in the U.K. At Jordan’s farm they like to share their positive actions.

Meetings are held in St. Luke’s Church Extension, commencing 7-30p.m. Admission £3 members and £4 visitors.

From Newcomers to Bowlers: How Tiptree Bowls Club Helped Us Feel at Home Moving to a new village during Covid was a strange experience. Lockdowns and restrictions meant that meeting people felt almost impossible, so when an open day at Tiptree Bowls Club caught our eye, my husband and I decided to take the plunge.

We arrived feeling a little apprehensive. Our only bowling experience was ten-pin, and we weren't sure how different lawn bowls would be.

We needn't have worried. We were immediately welcomed by Graham, who sized us up for the right woods and encouraged us to have a go.

What surprised us most was how tactical the game is. Getting the bias right, so your wood curves towards the jack rather than drifting away from it. It takes thought and feel. And the distance the jack is bowled to differs at each end, you have to consider how much weight you want to put behind each bowl.

Then there's the strategic element of blocking other players. We kept our ambitions modest - to get our woods somewhere near the jack without too much embarrassment!

By the end of the session, we had really enjoyed ourselves and were surprised to see how many steps we'd clocked up. We were even more surprised the next morning when we discovered a few achy muscles, clearly a better workout than it looks!

A few days later, after a busy week, we headed along to our first Friday night "points roll up." The evening is open to any member, with teams balanced using handicaps to keep things fair and competitive. The friendly atmosphere we'd experienced on open day carried right through the evening, and we finished the night in the clubhouse with a very reasonably priced drink. We were hooked.

Report from Rt Hon Priti Patel MP Congratulations to Tiptree Focus on launching this new community magazine for the village. Providing local, reliable and trustworthy news is important and I wish everyone involved with Tiptree Focus well.

Tiptree is one of our country’s greatest villages, with its rich history, businesses and community spirit well known beyond Tiptree and Essex. From our jam-making to our schools, Tiptree is a vibrant community. To support our local community to thrive and flourish, we need new investment in our public services and infrastructure.

Tiptree has already experienced considerable housing and population growth in recent years and further sites for new developments are being identified. We are now struggling to cope and these pressures will increase if more growth takes place, which is likely as a direct result of the Government imposing huge new housing targets on this part of Essex.

As Tiptree’s local MP, I have made numerous representations to Colchester City Council and Essex

County Council when planning applications for large sites are submitted. This includes pressing them for new developments to bring with them new investment in infrastructure and in local public services, including schools and healthcare facilities.

I have previously worked with Essex County Council to secure new investment in improving local roads in Tiptree and repairing potholes. I’ve also been campaigning for new investment in GP places and dentists in the area.

Unfortunately, funding from central government for our local public services has been forthcoming. This means we’ve seen funding for local schools cut and squeezed and the Government has been unable to confirm any new funding for more GPs. This is on top of the Government scrapping the A12 Widening Scheme.

While the Government continues to fail this part of Essex, I will carry on working with the Parish Council, local councillors and community groups to stand up for Tiptree and campaign for the services and infrastructure we need.
