VIVE LADIFF ÉRENCE

Dear Traveler

What a year 2023 has been already!

We

So now it’s time for us to look toward the end of the year and into next year. As hard as it is to believe, 2024 is right around the corner. We chose “Festive & Beyond” as the theme of this issue because we thought it would give you all the inspiration you needed for either a last-minute getaway at the back end of 2023 or the perfect way to begin your 2024.

Seeing so many of our beloved clients and our favorite travel partners from around the world was just what the doctor ordered after a few bumpy years (to say the least!) in the travel world.

Since then, we have seen our clients truly jump back into traveling with aplomb. Nothing has thrilled us more than seeing you all back on the road, or in the skies, or in the waters. Your photos from your travels light us up every single time. It has always been our life’s passion to make your travel dreams a reality, and it feels like this year was the first year in a while where everyone really got back out there and began checking those big destinations off the bucket list again—though of course some of our intrepid clients never really stopped!

We wanted to think outside of the box, too. Rather than suggesting a beachy all-inclusive for spring break, for example, why not traverse to India for palatial stays and a heavy dose of culture or Slovenia for incredible scenery? Instead of flocking to Italy in the summer when the charming streets are rendered unpassable by crowds, why not sneak away during the festive period to experience some peace and quiet? And what about those early months in the year, when we’re all a little blue after the holidays and need a pick-me-up? Take time out in Q1 for a luxe Caribbean escape or an adventure through the lush greenscape of Costa Rica.

Those aren’t the only ideas we have up our sleeves, as you’ll see in this issue. Read it and dream, and when you’re finished, get on the phone or drop us a line, and we will start planning your next great adventure. After all, you know what we always say:

Your friendly travel agents,

Two festive weeks in Italy? Yes, please! We teamed up with our friends at Perfetto Traveler in Italia to design a fabulously festive itinerary. While each itinerary is custom designed, here’s a sample to set you daydreaming...

Venice 2 Nights

Arrive in Venice, where a private transfer awaits. Your Poe Travel advisor will help you select the perfect Venetian hotel for your 2-night stay.

Suggested activities in Venice:

• A private highlights tour of the city to get your bearings and see some of the iconic sites such as Doge’s Palace, St. Mark’s Square, and more.

• An evening ombre e cicchetti tour (early evening drinks & light Venetian appetizers) with a private guide as you stroll through local pubs enjoying cocktails and local delicacies

• A chocolate-making workshop in a Venetian bottega whose doors open exclusively for you

The Dolomites 6 Nights

Travel to the dramatic Dolomite Mountains in northeastern Italy, a winter wonderland like something from a dream. Your 6-night stay is in the magical festive atmosphere of Cortina. An exclusive resort awaits you for the holiday week, welcoming you with ambience, tasty delicacies, and a relaxing spa, all crowned with views of the snow-covered peaks. Along with downtime to relax and celebrate, we have some exclusive experiences to elevate your time here.

Suggested activities in the Dolomites:

• A private full-day skiing excursion in Cortina with an expert guide to share this incomparably beautiful scenery with you, along with its history—the 1956 Winter Olympics were hosted here (and they’ll be hosted here again in 2026!)

• Hop on a snowmobile and drive through the woods to a hut lit by the moonlight for a private dinner, followed by time to go sledding under the stars

• Hike mountains using ciaspes, a special snowshoe whose origins date to ancient times, with a private guide

Milan 2 Nights

After your cozy days in the Dolomites, head to cosmopolitan Milan for some time in the city. There’s time to take in the local culture, which—of course!—includes a bit of retail therapy. This is the capital of fashion, after all! We’ll help you select the perfect Milanese accommodations for your 2-night stay.

Suggested activities in Milan:

• A private tour of Milan, to visit some of the city’s most famous sites along with some hidden secrets

• An exclusive private viewing of Leonardo’s Last Supper with no one else around

• A luxury shopping experience with a private personal shopper.

Lake Como 3 Nights

If you arrange your dates just right, you can end your trip by bringing in the New Year in beautiful Lake Como. We have a few favorites up our sleeves as far as hotels in the Como area, so we’ll help you pick the perfect one.

Suggested activities in Lake Como:

• Explore Como and some of the other picturesque towns around the lake with a local guide on a private boat tour on Lake Como

• A private wine tasting and winery tour in Valtellina Valley in the Italian Alps

• Learn the secrets and the recipes of homemade Italian pasta and other Northern Italian specialties in an intimate Lombardy cooking class

Want to spend the holidays in Italy this year? Contact your Poe Travel advisor today, and we will work on a personalized itinerary to set you on your way.

Festive Destinations on Our Radar

DELANIE

“Aspen, Colorado, looks like a snow globe at Christmastime. It was one of my favorite winter trips. Driving through Colorado at sunrise, with the freshly fallen snow and wildlife grazing in the fields, is picture perfect.”

BOLTON

“I can honestly say I’d love to be at Belmond’s Cap Juluca any time of year, but it would be especially wonderful during the holidays. I mean, it’s the most beautiful beach in the world, after all! What better place to ring in the New Year?”

ERIKA

BREANA

“I have always been a bit of a Christmas freak, and the idea of going up to Lapland and experiencing a true storybook winter wonderland has always been appealing. Glass accommodations with views of the Northern Lights, hot cups of cocoa, and meeting actual reindeer? Sign me up.”

ELLISON

“Oh, I could go on forever with my festive travel bucket list, but here are a few I’m dying to get to. . . Union Øye and the Storfjord Hotel, both in gorgeous Norway; Brenners Park in Baden Baden, Germany; Glenapp Castle in Scotland (Janine Cifelli has me yearning to go!); White Deer San Lorenzo Mountain Lodge in the far north of Italy; and of course my dream to take an entire castle like Birkhill with Loyd & Townsend-Rose in the UK for a fabulous house party.”

“I try to do an American southwest trip every year for Thanksgiving. The weather in the desert is just perfect that time of year: chilly and dry! Rosewood’s Inn at the Anasazi in Sante Fe would make a fabulous Thanksgiving spot. Or, if you’re looking for something in December, the Grand Canyon. A family trip I took there as a child is still one of my favorite all-time memories. Seeing it covered in snow was beautiful.”

MARGARET

“Paris in December is magical, with the festive lights twinkling around the city. The weather was cold but dry, perfect for putting on your most stylish coat and gloves and strolling through the City of Lights. All the stores were festive. We dropped by a boutique Baccarat crystal store, which treated us to a glass of champagne and a drop-in gift! Of course, the restaurants were great too.

Dublin and Belfast are also great this time of year. My daughter and I started in Belfast, where the city holiday festival was happening. Tons of yummy food, the best of which was a pastry cone filled with Nutella and ice cream with shaved chocolate on top!”

New Beginnings with Belmond

Start 2024 off right with a trip to one of Belmond’s sunny properties in the Caribbean: La Samanna, Cap Juluca, or Maroma. There’s so much to celebrate at all three properties, from a brand-new spa at Cap Juluca to villas and an exciting chef at La Samanna to a total reimagining at Maroma after a full renovation.

Peak Relaxation

Cap Juluca is about enjoying the moment and soaking up the serenity. It’s perfect for barefoot strolls on the Caribbean’s most beautiful beach, luxuriating on the pristine shore, and taking in the island’s laidback charm—and then indulging in epicurean delights at one of the resort’s celebrated restaurants.

We’re thrilled to say that Belmond has revealed a brand-new spa, set to debut in late 2023, in partnership with Guerlain. It draws inspiration from Anguilla’s earliest inhabitants, the indigenous Arawak tribe who celebrated the renewal and rejuvenation of each day.

Cap Juluca Spa by Guerlain will combine traditional and innovative treatments, staying true to Guerlain’s multisensory and holistic approach, as well as experiences created specifically in harmony with the Anguillan atmosphere.

Don’t forget, Cap Juluca also has their Signature Suites and Private Villas to enhance your stay. All villas feature a private pool and direct beach access, and they’re wonderful for groups or families.

Did You Know?

All of Belmond’s Signature Suites & Villas (across their entire collection) come with an exceptional level of elevated service in addition to our Poe Perks, including:

• Complimentary roundtrip transfers

• Dedicated host service

• Daily breakfast

• Complimentary laundry service

• Complimentary curated in-suite bar & coffee

• A fully bespoke VIP stay experience, tailored to your preferences

Sizzling Culinary News at La Samanna ST.

La Samanna, nestled on one of St. Martin’s most beautiful beaches, brings retro beach elegance and French glamor together seamlessly. Think stunning cliff views, colorful botanicals, coveted privacy, and endless opportunities for sea adventures. Vibrant island cuisine and sparkling toasts at sunset are simply a way of life here.

Speaking of cuisine, La Samanna’s most exciting news is that of their brandnew Culinary Director, Marcel Ravin. Two Michelin-starred Chef Ravin has taken the helm at L’Oursin, the resort’s elegant bistro. Ravin elevates the culinary experience to new heights, pairing a skillful fusion of French and Creole flavors with locally sourced, market-fresh produce. The arrival of the Martiniqueborn chef marks an exciting return to his roots, utilizing distinctive Caribbean ingredients from his childhood to create unforgettable cuisine at La Samanna. We would be remiss if we didn’t remind you of La Samanna’s palatial yet comfortable three-and four-bedroom Pool Villas, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows, fully equipped kitchens, and panoramic terraces. These villas are fabulous for families or groups of friends looking for extra privacy, amenities, and service.

All’s New at Maroma RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO

Maroma has long been described as the Riviera Maya’s beating heart, and we missed it so while it was closed for a total renovation, but BOY, was it worth it! Maroma is once again open to guests, and we think this is the perfect getaway for early 2024 and beyond.

This secret haven of Mayan mystique is tucked between the jungle and the wideopen sea. Your senses come alive with the touches of authentic Mexican culture, and the resort’s recent renovation has brought out a light and airy feel, with rooms art-filled and restaurants mouthwatering.

Dive into Mayan culture by swimming in millenary cenotes or enjoying a ritualistic wellness experience at Latin America’s first Guerlain Spa. Plus, at Woodend by Curtis Stone, savor stunning seafood cooked over an open fire by this Australian culinary pioneer. The jawdropping ocean views at this beachside restaurant don’t hurt either.

Ask your Poe Travel advisor about our Poe Perks at all Belmond properties. Tell us which one tickles your fancy, and we will set you on your way for some Q1 relaxation!

Live the Pura Vida in Costa Rica

One of our travel industry favorites, Javier Echecopar, decided to share the magic of Costa Rica with the world by starting Journey Costa Rica. We chatted with him to learn what makes Costa Rica so special, for a trip in early 2024 and beyond.

POE TRAVEL: Why Costa Rica? What made you decide to embark on this exciting journey?

JAVIER ECHECOPAR: I traveled to Costa Rica in 2021 with my family, and we spent three weeks driving from San José across the mountains to the remote Osa Peninsula, all over the coast and past volcanoes, ending on the gold coast of Guanacaste. We fell in love with the country—from the moment I saw my kids running wild on a remote beach, I understood that Costa Rica was an incredible model for a sustainable future. Around 25% of land is protected, there’s a strong relationship with nature, and it’s one of the happiest countries in the world. It’s exciting to see a realworld model proving that prioritizing the right things can increase happiness while having a sustainable, thriving relationship with nature.

PT: Who is the perfect traveler to Costa Rica?

JE: Costa Rica is perfect for somebody looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation. Adventure could be anything from a thrilling zipline session and wildlife tracking on a challenging hike to an easy-going stroll observing nature on a trail in the cloud forest. After

some adventure, you unwind. I love unwinding on a sailboat, opening a bottle of chilled wine at sunset after spending the afternoon watching the kids find seashells on the beach.

PT: What is it like traveling to Costa Rica from January to March?

JE: It’s a great time! The rains stop in December, so January is lush and green. Throughout most of the country, it’s the time with the highest likelihood of sunshine and beautiful weather, perfect for enjoying the things Costa Rica is known for: exploring, sailing, beach time, hiking, and biking.

PT: Which hotels in Costa Rica really light you up?

JE: Hacienda AltaGracia encompasses three of my favorite types of travel: adventure, community-focus, and wellbeing. Set in the Talamanca Mountains with a river running through, you can hike through rainforest, bike, swim in waterfalls—all the iconic Costa Rican adventures on-property. AltaGracia hires local people, sources food from nearby farms, and creates experiences to meet the locals. Plus, it has my favorite spa in Central and South America.

Pacuare Lodge is possibly the only luxury lodge in world where you can raft in and out via one of the best rafting rivers, adding a sense of adventure from the get-go! Once you’re in, you’ll enjoy incredible food and ziplining through the treetops.

I love the town of Santa Teresa, combining it with a luxury stay at Nantipa’s beachside bungalows, for the best of both worlds: quick access to the beach and tidal pools in a tranquil setting plus proximity to all the fun things to do in town.

PT: Tell us about some of the experiences you curate for Poe Travel guests in Costa Rica.

JE: We’ve been researching and developing non-stop with relentless exploration. We’re creating brand-new experiences to take Costa Rican travel to a new level. Some of my favorites include exploring the Pacific coast’s remote wild beaches by boat or chartering a

luxury yacht to navigate coves and small islands. We love using boats to explore the coastline and have beach BBQs where you’ll find hardly any other humans!

It’s an amazing way to experience Costa Rica’s vibrant marine life too—fishing, whale watching, snorkeling, and watching dolphins follow along. We also have access to hike to a private deep pale blue waterfall. In the spirit of Indiana Jones, we hike along a river, swimming along the way. Once we reach the waterfall, it’s time to jump in and relax, enjoying a gourmet picnic with no one else around.

We create a lot of experiences around wildlife, a key element to Costa Rican culture. This could be learning the behavior and challenges of sea turtles and releasing them in the Osa Peninsula, tracking tapirs at night around the mountains of Tenorio Volcano, or behind-the-scenes access to one of the wildlife rescue centers. We also love connecting our travelers with Costa Rica’s culture and friendly people. Learning the history behind a 150-year-old hacienda or having dinner at a local home and making tortillas with a charming family are experiences that stick with you.

Norwegian Spring Break

Hideaways

There’s nowhere like the Nordics, and this is a fabulous time of year to experience Norway with thinner crowds, cooler temperatures, and a chance at glimpsing the elusive Northern Lights. The Luxury Travel Designer knows all the hidden gems in the Nordics at any time of year, so they’ve shared two of their favorite Norwegian spots for a spring break getaway with us.

Hideaway #1: Isbreen The Glacier JØKELFJORD, NORTHERN NORWAY

In a grove at the shoreline at the northernmost tip of Europe, the curves of five igloos rise from the forest. This is Isbreen The Glacier, where the midnight sun flitters between the mountains in the summer, and, in the winter, the aurora borealis dances across the sky.

Upon arrival, meet owners Tonny and Mira as they welcome you into your spacious, well-heated igloo, featuring an ensuite bathroom and private jacuzzi. An arctic lunch is served in the dining suite facing the fjord. Your stay includes all meals, beverages, and on-site activities.

In the early spring, the Arctic is still a winter landscape, but spring is in the air. After the equinox, the days lengthen, and the tundra is bathed in polar light. However, it is still possible to view the northern lights after dark.

Hideaway #2: TunheimsFjørå Lodge FISKÅ, NORWAY, WESTERN FJORDS

Once you’ve gotten the blood pumping at Isbreen, spend some laidback time at TunheimsFjørå Lodge. This fjordside retreat lies tucked away along the arm of the Vanylvsfjord. Three stylish lodges are cantilevered to hang weightlessly over the water, providing access to a range of fjord and mountain activities and a sense of elemental calm.

Ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, each of the lodges contains three en-suite king-sized bedrooms. A private sauna and jacuzzi-terrace are set around the open-plan dining space and fully equipped kitchen. The lounge extends over the water, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides.

This hideaway is all-inclusive, featuring a private host, chef, and housekeeper along with access to all on-site equipment and facilities: an 18-foot fishing boat and gear, kayaks, paddleboards, wet and dry suits, life jackets, mountain bikes, sand volleyball court, outdoor barbecue, sauna, and jacuzzi. Massage treatments are available on request.

This is a fantastic place to just be. However, if you have grand plans for adventures, try...

Hiking Tunheimshornet

Tunheimshornet Mountain lies just behind the lodges. At the top awaits a traditional Norwegian “gapahuk” shelter, built by the lodge’s founders, which is a popular hiking destination for locals. Take in panoramic views and enjoy a wilderness lunch by your private chef.

Suggested Activities at Isbreen The Glacier:

Dogsledding

Dogsledding is a 4,000-year-old tradition and lifestyle. Visit a husky farm, where your hosts have raised and trained these dogs for over 30 years. Enjoy a private tour of the family farm as you get to know the dogs. Once the huskies are harnessed and ready, head into the wilderness, traversing this otherworldly landscape of winding fjords and lofty mountains, the wind singing in your ears.

Aurora Floating

Drift across the surface of an arctic fjord on this unforgettable floating excursion. You’ll remain warm and dry thanks to a fullbody neoprene floatation suit. You may feel like an interstellar explorer, a feeling strengthened when you gaze at the bottomless Nordic sky. If you’re lucky, the heavens may even be lit by the green-and-purple hues of the aurora borealis.

Porsche or Vintage Morgan 4x4 Ride

Drive down the idyllic roads of the Norwegian countryside in your choice of a brand-new Porsche or vintage Morgan 4x4. Take the wheel, the wind rushing through your hair as the hedgerows blur around you, taking in a sense of freedom lost in contemporary motoring. A gourmet picnic waits in the backseat, and your hosts have suggested a route, so hit the road.

DUE NORTH Air Private Charter

From both hideaways, you can treat yourself to the excursion of a lifetime: a privately chartered helicopter experience in a twinengine AW-169 with Due North Air, The Luxury Travel Designer’s sister company.

With a helicopter and pilots at your disposal, enjoy a bird’s-eye view of valleys, fjords, glaciers, and mountains—a highlight of your spring break in Norway!
