Dear Traveler With each year that passes, we find ourselves more in tune with what “luxury” really means to us. It makes sense— luxury travel is our passion, and it’s the passion of our beloved clients. We pride ourselves on keeping our finger on the pulse, but the wisdom of time has taught us one thing: it’s not always the shiniest, newest, most glamorous thing that defines true luxury. Sure, sometimes luxury means white-glove service. Sometimes it means decadent crystal chandeliers and only the finest champagne. We love those things—make no bones about it—and we know you do too, sometimes. But luxury can be a lot more complex than that, can’t it? Sometimes luxury is about pure serenity and solitude—a quiet moment in a seemingly deserted place, just you and your travel companion taking it all in. Sometimes luxury is about exclusivity, doors opening that you never could have imagined, bringing you face-to-face with renowned world treasures without the crowds. It can mean stepping off of a state-of-the-art luxury cruise ship and heading out for a hike to reconnect with nature. Equally, it could be tasting a delectable martini at your favorite luxury hotel and deciding you simply must know how to make one yourself—and then being taught how to do so by the expert mixologists on staff. Sometimes luxury is about meeting local people in far-flung places, learning how they live, and knowing that your visit enhances their community rather than detracting from it. Luxury travel isn’t cut and dry. It’s refined and authentic and means something different to everyone. Our aim in this issue of PoeGo is to examine what luxury means to us in 2026 and bring all those beautiful, multifaceted ideas to the forefront of your mind as you begin to plan next year’s travels and beyond. REDEFINING LUXURY This issue of PoeGo EMILY is full to the brim with an array of destinations and experiences that all define luxury in their own way. Along with our fabulous travel partners around the world, we also wanted to give our beloved team at Poe Travel the chance to say what luxury ELLISON means to them.

I THINK TRUE LUXURY LIES IN THE DETAILS that make me feel seen. It’s a handwritten note welcoming me to my destination, being greeted by name at my hotel, or simply remembering how I take my coffee in the morning. For example, when I was in Croatia last year with Dinaric Adventures on a fabulous trip organized by Rebecca Recommends, I had expressed interest in a specific purse I saw in a shop. Behind the scenes, my guide contacted the brand and arranged for the purse to be delivered to my hotel. I was so impressed by these extra steps taken to ensure my happiness. Luxury lives in the thoughtful touches that make me feel known and appreciated rather than counted.

TO ME, LUXURY IS ALL ABOUT THE CONCEPT OF TIME, simply not being in a hurry and really being where I am: in the present. The experiences that spring to mind right away are those created by our dear friend Nicolas Gandilhon in France; he’s the poster child of luxury and makes the magic happen in a natural, unpretentious way, opening every door in the book. Any time I have traveled with him, I’ve been reminded what luxury really is.

WHEN YOU LOOK “LUXURY” UP IN THE DICTIONARY, most definitions use words such as “great comfort,” and “highest quality,” and “expensive,” and of course, there are so many facets to travel, too—planes, trains, automobiles, hotels, and access... This makes it hard to define luxury, especially since, to us, travel is a lifelong adventure. Our guides and travel partners worldwide are authentic, curating remarkable travel experiences for each of our clients, who are so vastly different in and of themselves. Luxury looks different for us all, and we’re so grateful to have built a network of contacts over so many years that can home in on what luxury is for each individual traveler.

LUXURY, TO ME, DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN ROLLING OUT THE RED CARPET OR THE FINEST CHAMPAGNE. It’s about access—the ability to experience things that aren’t generally available to most travelers. True luxury is about rare, unpublicized moments that allow you to really connect with the people and destination. Maybe it is being invited into a farmhouse in the French countryside, where you share a meal with the family who has lived there for generations. Or it could be visiting a family-run vineyard to taste wines that only exist in that region and are not exported. For me, it is the chance to slow down and really experience a destination rather than rushing through a tightly packed itinerary. Of course, private entry to the Vatican or a personal shopper in Paris are amazing—but it’s the more authentic experiences that feel truly luxurious to me.

LUXURY SHOULD BE INDIVIDUAL, PERSONAL, AND RARE ENOUGH TO TAKE YOU OUT OF THE TYPICAL DAY-TO-DAY SCHEDULE OF YOUR LIFE. One of my favorite such travel experiences happened one afternoon last November when I was staying at Ritz Paris (a luxurious sentence to write in and of itself!). A friend and I spent the afternoon at the Rodin Museum, admiring the sculptures in the garden and then exploring more of Saint Germain. We walked to Le Bon Marche for shopping and took time to explore every floor. Exploring more of Saint Germain, we found an amazing fromagerie to sample and buy cheese and then, naturally, found a boulangerie a few doors down. By the time we made it back to the Ritz, we had a perfect carpet picnic to enjoy for happy hour. With the first course of our meal complete, we went down to Bar Hemingway, skipping the long line as guests of the hotel. The cocktails are amazing, of course, but the mini cheeseburgers are what I remember best. This afternoon and evening were so memorable because we could luxuriate in each moment, enjoying the ritzy glamor of a beautiful, leisurely day in Paris.

Agent Report: Margaret in Québec —— Always On the Go, Margaret recently explored Canada’s province of Québec, flying in and out of Montreal but wandering far and wide. After flying to Montreal via La Guardia, Margaret picked up her rental car and made the pretty 2-hour drive to Manoir Hovey. HOTEL SPOTLIGHT Manoir Hovey Built at the turn of the 20th-century as a summer home modeled after George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Manoir Hovey became a luxury hotel in the 1950s and today is a member of Relais & Châteaux for their outstanding culinary offerings—which pay homage to their Québecois heritage—and their impeccable service. Margaret was charmed by the hotel’s setting. She raved about the food, both the sumptuous breakfast and the two dinner options, one of which is their Michelin-starred restaurant and the other being a more casual option. The hotel features two pools, one for adults that faces the lake and the other for families near the tennis courts, still with lake views. Margaret also enjoyed the hotel’s spa, which features a charming outdoor fireplace and small pool along with its treatment rooms. Margaret’s room was in the main lodge, and she also noted that they offer cabins around the property. The rooms she would recommend most, however, are the ones in their brand-new building. All 12 rooms here face the water and have high ceilings, large bathrooms, and comfortable sitting areas.

On To Québec City. . . From Manoir Hovey, Margaret made the 2.5-hour drive to Québec City to drop off her car and walked to the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac on the boardwalk. HOTEL SPOTLIGHT Fairmont Le Château Frontenac Right in the heart of Old Québec— which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site—and near the Place Royale and Dufferin Terrace, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac enjoys breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River. From its European-style charm to its five-star guest rooms and four dining options to its stellar spa, this hotel is all Canadian luxury. Margaret stayed on the Concierge Level, which included a lovely breakfast. She noted that the hotel was bustling, with its large main-floor restaurant seeming quite popular with its views of the water and boardwalk. Margaret spent her first day walking the boardwalk and its many local shops. Off the boardwalk, there is a tram that takes you down to the Le Petit Champlain area, which is full of restaurants and shops to explore.

Railway to Montreal. . . After two nights in Québec City, Margaret boarded the Via Rail to Montreal. The train station was close to her hotel, so getting there was easy even with luggage, and the whole journey felt “civilized.” The business class cars were at the front of the train, and the seats were comfortable for the 3.5-hour journey. On arrival in Montreal, Margaret hopped in a taxi to the Four Seasons.

Margaret says the Four Seasons was simply “the spot to be in.” Her room was large, featuring a palatial bathroom. Enticed by the idea of the best-of-the-best in active travel, POE TRAVEL’S ERIKA recently decided to embark on a walking and hiking tour of Sicily with Butterfield & Robinson, and she came back with nothing but raves. . . The best part of the trip, Erika says, was the local and bespoke nature of every single day. She felt at every turn that she was uncovering an off-the-beaten-path location. “This is the trip for a curious traveler who wants to really enjoy discovering one or two areas deeply,” Erika says.

Erika also appreciated the all-inclusive feel of the trip. At each stop, guests were urged by their guides to try whatever they wanted, wherever they went. If you want a beer, have it. If you want a dessert, go for it. Food was often served family-style and wine was always flowing. Erika learned that wines from Etna have lower sulfites than wine produced elsewhere, which greatly reduces hangovers! Is it any surprise that Erika came back talking about how much she LOVED this trip?

The October day that found Erika at Mount Etna was a bit cold, so they started their excursion with coffee before setting off. This two-hour hike, Erika tells us, was simply breathtaking— and it was the most actual “hiking” she felt they did on the whole trip; the rest she considered “walking.” In the afternoon, Erika set off with her guide, separate from the group, on a vigorous climb to another crater because she simply couldn’t get enough! The rest of the group went ahead to Taormina to get an early start on shopping. Erika enjoyed her evening at leisure relaxing in her plush room at Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel, complete with room service and a luxurious bath.

Today’s walking tour of Taormina was “really enjoyable,” thanks in large part to Erika’s extremely knowledgeable guide who went into great detail about the stunning ancient theater. The historians in the group were enraptured. In the afternoon, the group set off on a beautiful private sailing around Taormina. For their final evening, they sat down for a fabulous farewell dinner at Ristorante Timeo back at Belmond. The next morning, Erika departed Italy exhilarated by her days of Sicilian explorations.

The group met in the hotel lobby to begin their shared journey, setting off on an eight-mile hike along a coastal beach trail. It was a really fun way to meet the group, and Erika found it to be an easy hike, though we must say that she is very active! She was awed by the birdlife, including several flocks of flamingos. They had a delicious al fresco lunch at a rustic local restaurant. “A fabulous first taste of what the trip was going to be,” says Erika. “Everyone there was local except for us.” DAY 2 ANCIENT NOTO HIKE Today’s lunch was, again, local and authentic—this time, on an almond farm. “No notes,” says Erika. “It was fantastic, bespoke, and

very unique.” After some time at leisure, the group set off on an afternoon tour of Noto with a private dinner at a pop-up art gallery. DAY 3 | LINGUAGLOSSA HIKE & WINERY Setting off from their well-located hotel, Erika and the group hiked the morning away, followed by a winery tour in Linguaglossa. The town was incredibly charming, a little Alpine in feel and set at the base of Mount Etna. The smallproduction winery was fantastic. After lunch, they were able to hike to their hotel. In the evening, they visited a larger winery for dinner and a tour, which Erika recommends to any keen oenophile. They enjoyed a private, familystyle dinner set to live music, just for them.
