magine winter’s snowy blanket melting away to uncover your home’s outdoor oasis. As you cozy up by the living room fireplace, envision warm days to come, when you’ll meander out along a natural stone pathway to your boulder fire pit area. Sinking into a colorful Adirondack chair, you watch warm breezes caress your balanced and colorful landscaping and listen to the music of a nestled water feature. Such winter imaginings are time well spent, says Karyn Murphy, professional Landscape Designer at Erb’s Landscaping in Pocono Pines. Old Man Winter may be wreaking havoc on the roads right now, but Karyn is already busy booking clients and creating designs for those clients who are in the planning stages of revitalizing or creating their outdoor space. Since 1999, Erb’s Landscape has been transforming those visions into realities, and Karyn wants you to do some homework before she meets with you. Karyn’s landscape and hardscape designs are as individual as her clients, so she wants you to ask yourself such questions as: • How do I use my outdoor space? • What plants or colors are my favorites? • How do I describe my style and lifestyle? • What issues does my present outdoor space present? • What’s my budget? The last question, dealing with budget, should not discourage anyone who thinks that professional outdoor design and build is only for the Architectural Digest crowd. “I can work with any reasonable budget,” says Karyn. I match such elements as the choice of materials and sizes of trees to work with your wallet. My choice of materials is so vast.” Erb’s specializes in indigenous and sustainable landscapes and natural materials, which are Pocono client preferences. While Karyn is listening, she is observing. “I look at your lifestyle and your style preferences when I come into your home,” she says. “Are you cottage style? Contemporary?” She

Quality Can’t Be Rushed J

im Blunt calls himself a “Detail Man.” As he meticulously hand-brushes primer on a kitchen cabinet door, he professes his passion for what sets him apart from “the other guys.” Jim likes the painting and repair jobs that demand a patient hand and an artist’s skill. Jim is the “Right Guy”—for custom work, revitalizing cabinetry, repairing drywall, and patching up problems so that even the most critical eye will never discern the mend. “These oak kitchen cabinets are high quality wood,” Jim explains. “But they date the kitchen. The owner could have ripped them out and then faced the choice of spending a fortune on new cabinets, or installing updated, but inferior models.” “Someone else might have taken these wood cabinet doors out to the garage and spray painted them,” he says. “But quality can’t be rushed.” Jim wants the authentic wood grain and texture to show through. Jim uses only hand-tools for a job. He removes the doors so they lie flat. Paint runs and drips are the sign of an amateur. His products are top quality—from the soft-bristle Purdy brushes that leave no brushstrokes to the specially-formulated, self-leveling paint. “The kitchen is the heart of the home; you don’t want runs,” he insists. The kitchen cabinet job was one he “picked up from a man who saw my work at another house in the neighborhood. This guy just handed me the keys to his house for the job.” Jim’s customers are assured that his custom work can refresh or repair any eyesore in the home. His skilled touch goes to work on such projects as:

Water-damaged walls and ceilings (“I don’t just throw mesh on the cut-out. A good ‘blowout patch’ is an art. I actually cement the piece back in with a compound and then properly prime, seal, and fix the damage.) Drywall repair (“Tape starts to separate; nails pop. I can fix that!”) Stipple repair (“It’s tough. Every stippler creates a unique look, like a fingerprint. I repair the damage so your eye will never see the fix.”) Painting paneled walls for an updated look (“I’ve even spackled every seam, primed and painted paneling so it looks like drywall!”) Wall paper removal (“A historic house I worked on had four layers of wallpaper, and a combination of drywall and plaster. It takes a skilled hand to do that kind of restoration.”)
