Speed Gun For Cricket: All You Need To Know
In the game of cricket: batting, bowling, and fielding are all equally important. If you're a fan of cricket, then you must know what a speed gun is. For those of you who don't, a speed gun is used to measure the rate of a cricket ball. It is similar to how the speed of a motor vehicle is measured. You can find speed guns extensively used in Leagues and international matches. Speed guns are mounted on a pole and placed next to the sight screen. This device emits a microwave beam covering the entire distance of the pitch and detects any movement of an object along the pitch. Due to this speed gun, spectators and players can see the speed of the ball on the sight screen immediately. Since the speed gun was introduced, there has been competition among fast bowlers to break the record of 100 miles/hour speed.
The basic principle behind a cricket bowling speed gun is the doppler effect. Due to this phenomenon, if the object is moving toward or away from the gun, the frequency of the reflected radio waves when they return contrasts the transmitted waves. When the ball approaches the speed gun, the frequency of the waves returning is higher than the waves transmitted. When the object moves away, the frequency is lower.
