Project Brief:
A pedagogical approach to thinking methodically and applying it to procedural workflows and computational design. Rethinking the dichotomy between analog and digital, a closer inspection of the latest digital tools gives designers the ability to test more iterative solutions than the normal analog processes can in a certain amount of time. This affords the possibility of arriving at the best solution when applied with design metrics to aid in the design decision-making process.

The study explores intrinsic ways of managing the growth of a community on the planet Mars capable of sustaining human life. Modularisation through automated assemblies allows unlimited developmental growth based on inhabitants and other environmental factors.

In search of a sustainable solution for a livable Martian colony, this study aims to provide for an intrinsic way of managing growth and provide for a circular economy that would thrive in the harsh martian environment. The design process is broken down into parts that ultimately prescribe a foundation for an automated development using data and parameters gathered from the surrounding environment.

KAPASIGAN FOOD TOWERS (Project KFT) introduces the concept of a public park and food security facility that not only serves the public realm, but also and more importantly, provides for the needs of the surrounding community in terms of food resource and environmental concerns.
The design process revolves around Adaptable Futures through the study of Impermanent Architecture and Urban Acupuncture, which aim to aid inadequate food security, degradation of green spaces, excessive waste production, and unpredictable man-made and natural threats; problems which take place in Metro Manila and have affected its communities in a socio-economic and environmental scale. In this particular site, which is Barangay Kapasigan, these design strategies come together to holistically improve its local community and the area surrounding it, whether in a direct or indirect manner. Moreover, with the project location being susceptible to major environmental threats, the study also targets minimal disturbance and environmental impact, all while prioritizing the security of adequate food production.
The project leans toward Low-Impact Design, highlighting design strategies that maximize natural elements and biodegradable components to reduce ecological footprint. With the site located near a body of water, materials considered for the project are made to be eco-friendly to help prevent pollution and environmental damage. This serves as an alternative for massive, non-functional, and wasteful infrastructure and materials. Considering that the project site is prone to flooding, and in line with future uncertainties such as pandemics, threats which are rampant in our time, the study encourages for design strategies that constantly adapt and change to mitigate the effects of the continuous cycle of natural and man-made threats. It highlights modular components that change, transform, and adapt according to a site’s social, economic, and environmental situation. Its adaptable framework provides unlimited possibilities through strategic planning that overcomes the changes within and outside of the project, whilst benefiting the users, locals and its environment.
