Jeannette Franks Weed Warrior with the resolve of her prey

J

eannette Franks is not one to shy away from a challenge, much to the

chagrin of Bainbridge Island’s tree-climbing ivy and the island’s many other invasive plant species.

“At first, people didn’t think the ivy was a pest, but they’ve become educated about the non-native plants and the need for us to work together to be successful in the removal of them,” she said. “Many more people are aware of the problem now, and have worked to rid their own properties of invasive plants. There’s been a lot of success on the island, but we have to keep at it.”

Franks ranks as the island’s No. 1 Weed Warrior, an organization she helped start in 2003 after some 10 years of fighting non-native plants on her own, well, along with her husband, Dick Baker.

“It took us three years to get rid of the ivy on an acre of our land,” she said. “There were a lot of others trying to do the same, so we got together and formed Weed Warriors. It’s a battle, but we’re making headway because we’re organized and we get a lot of help from a lot of people and organizations.”

by Bainbridge High School students and other volunteers is starting to make a difference. The organization also is arming itself in better ways, including with well-designed tools to assist the ivy eradication, thanks to grants and other financial assistance.

It may sound unusual for someone like Franks, who has a doctorate from the University of Washington’s School of Social Work and has worked as an associate professor there for many years, to dedicate herself to eradicating weeds. She doesn’t think so.

“We’re always looking for more volunteers,” Franks said. “But we’re encouraged by the progress we’re making.

“I’ve always been a certified tree hugger,” she said. “In the ‘60s, when we were choosing our paths in life, I was always outside exploring. I grew up in the Seattle area, so it’s just part of who I am.”

She takes special pride in the ongoing battle to rid Blakely Harbor Park area of ivy, which had been crawling up trees and covering the ground for more than 100 years before the battle to eradicate it began in earnest.

“From what I heard, 140 ivy sprigs were brought here by the early pioneers and by the 1980s it was old-growth ivy in Blakely and had

completely outgrown the native species.”

Franks embraces Ann Lovejoy’s theory that the birds ate the seeds of the ivy and holly that propagated after being brought ashore, then secreted them in the area.

“It just took off and by the time we decided to take it on,” she said, “it had reached critical mass. It’s been a challenge, but we’ve gotten a lot of

Ministers Jaco & Barbara ten Hove Community involvement comes a calling

T

he church that Jaco and Barbara ten Hove cominister doesn’t have a door. It doesn’t have any windows or a roof either. In fact, Cedar Unitarian Universalist Church doesn’t have an actual building, but the ten Hoves see that as a good thing.

retired to make the island their home, but an opening at CUU made it possible to combine their ministry with a place they love.

Without a dedicated structure, their ministry isn’t contained within four walls.

The two, who will celebrate 21 years together in October, have not lost any time weaving themselves into a number of organizations.

When they took the co-ministerial position in 2008, Cedars UU was meeting at Bainbridge Performing Arts. Within months, the venue moved to Webster Hall at The Island School on Day Road.

“It’s been a good fit for us,� Jaco said.

They are happy to be living on Bainbridge Island, which they first visited in the mid-1990s while serving separate congregations in the Seattle area. They thought they might have to wait until they

Barbara made a beeline to Helpline House where she works a weekly shift at the food bank. “That organization is so well run,� she said. “One of the best I’ve ever worked with.�

She asked Cedars Music Director Chris Smellow to put music to the church’s mission statement: Worship with open hearts, nurture a learning spirit, serve justice with compassion and love without judgment. “Music is very important to us,� she said.

Jaco, who has played guitar since the fifth grade, accompanies as Barbara leads the Community Singers entertaining folks at Wyatt House and Madison Avenue Retirement Centers.

Jaco recently accepted the position of president of the Bainbridge Island North Kitsap Interfaith Council, a 20-member group of local faith communities. They converge to collaborate and cooperate on projects such as the monthly Super Suppers, which provide free, hot dinners the last five business days of every month

He participated in Interfaith Peace Walk for a Nuclear-Free Future on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2009 and 2010.

Susan Jackson Work, fun merges for BAC executive director

I

t was pouring rain the day Susan Jackson rolled into town in 2002. She and her friend P.C. Harper took a wrong turn on Sportsman Club Road and ended up circling Eagledale for quite some time. They never quite made it to downtown.

Serendipitously, they met a woman on the road, with a daughter and a dog in tow.

“We’re aliens and we’ve lost our mothership,” Jackson remembers saying.

“I’ll have to draw you a map,” said the stranger, who introduced herself as Ellin Spenser. “What are you doing here?”

“We’re looking for a new place to live,” said the art administrator and the artist.

“You need to live here,” Spenser said, “We need people like you.”

Spenser hooked them up with a real estate agent and Bainbridge welcomed them home.

“We were taken care of,” Jackson said, ever so pleased with her Battle Point home.

After spending a decade at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City and another 10 years as director of the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado, Jackson assumed she’d find something to do at Seattle Art Museum or the Frye. But when she took a drawing class at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts, she impulsively asked if there were any openings.

There was, for a publicist, and she took it.

And that was that, for about four months, when she took the job as interim executive director until February 2003 when she was given the permanent position.

The work in Aspen had given her a good background in fundraising.

At MoMA, she invented, then directed the Visitor Services Department. It was the first new

department in 33 years, and made Jackson the youngest department head at the museum. The concept of visitor services became a trend in museum administration, which put Jackson in the spotlight, consulting with institutions such as the d’Orsay Art Museum in Paris and the National Gallery in Canada.

With all that heady experience, you might think BAC is small potatoes for Jackson.

“MoMA was like being part of the biggest dysfunctional family,” she said.

“This is like a happy family. The staff is the hardest working, most underpaid but cheerful group.

There’s not much drama here.”

“This is the best job I’ve ever had,” she said in her Winslow office below see-level a few doors down from the Gallery.

The drama she has experienced has come from outside: the dismal economy, budget cuts to arts funding and the Winslow Way reconstruction this summer.

“It’s a pleasure to work for an organization with 63 years’ worth of history. We’re just keepers of the flame here,” she said. “There is virtually no turnover. It makes it easy to have a new idea, to solve problems collectively. Running BAC is a collaborative effort. That’s what makes it fun.”

Carolyn Goodwin Hungry for a niche, she finds one on her plate

B

efore eating local was fashionable it just tasted better.

Twenty years ago Carolyn Goodwin was a regular patron of the Pike Place Market when she first developed a taste for talking with the farmers who could share their culinary wisdom.

It was a love of the finest quality food that first sparked Goodwin’s drive for farm fresh and has since helped form the local food network on Bainbridge Island.

After moving to the island in 1997, she began frequenting the Saturday market. She was introduced to island farmers Betsey Wittick of Laughing Crow Farm and Brian MacWhorter of Butler Green Farm, both of whom were hard at work building a supply of local food. Goodwin saw a missing link and a solution.

“These farmers were working 16-hour days growing wonderful food, but they had hardly any promotion,” said Goodwin. “I wasn’t a farmer myself, but I knew I had something that I could contribute.”

Her resumé includes a journalism education from Western Washington University, experience as a one-woman community newspaper editor/publisher, and her current gig of marketing and public relations. Thus, her first edition of Island-Fresh News was born.

The mail-out gave a market report of available goods and put a face behind the food. Goodwin quickly found that her love of food was an easy way to meet people in the community. Connecting over food was simple and the island network was growing with speed.

From there she connected with Sallie Maron, who was the genesis behind Sound Food, an offshoot of island nonprofit Sustainable Bainbridge.

“We had tea at Blackbird Bakery and the sparks were flying,” said Goodwin.

With Goodwin’s help, Sound Food has blossomed with an online publication and website connecting curious taste buds with growers.

For the last three summers, Sound Food operated a m i d d l e - o f- t h e week farm stand at the Bainbridge ferry terminal, which grew into the daily market now in operation at Bay Hay and Feed in Rolling Bay.

With new farmland popping up on the island and a rising popularity of backyard chickens, it appears that Goodwin’s passion is satiating a local food hunger.

Sound Food has no shortage of projects and dreams to continue building the infrastructure, with the firm belief that the farmers and connoisseurs will follow. Next on the list is an online forum to make quick connection between local restaurants and Kitsap County farmers.

“It’s the easiest way to build community,” said Goodwin. “Local food always tastes better, and you get a special pride in being able to tell a story about the person who raised and cultivated the food on your table.”

The heart behind business success

t the age of 24 Terri Bryant got in a car, waved good-bye to Virginia and embarked on a mission to find her new home.

It was 1977 when Bryant first landed on Bainbridge Island and found work on Winslow Way. That same year, as synchronicity would have it, the home furniture store Dana’s opened on Ericksen Avenue.

Her mantra has helped dictate her work as an advocate and leader of the downtown business community, including a stint as the president of the Bainbridge Island Downtown Association. In a place like Bainbridge, she said, the business owners are independently minded folks who are accustomed to making their own decisions in their own creative spaces. But with business vitality inherently intertwined, it works best to have a central organization that coordinates everyone’s efforts to enable shops to be the best that they can individually be, she said.

Over 34 years later Bryant is coowner of Dana’s and finds herself still working on Winslow Way. “I talk to my neighbors all day, every day,” said Bryant. “I couldn’t find a better way to make a living.”

She started making connections in the community through jobs in the island restaurant scene, but after 10 years decided to get out of the food business. She transitioned to Dana’s in the 1990s, and by 2005 she and business partner Mary Terry had taken it over from the original owner, Dana Berg. The shop has moved from Eriksen Avenue to the Winslow Mall and sits today at the corner of Madrone and Winslow Way. The downtown business community is deeply ingrained in Bryant’s personal philosophy as a business

“The whole street needs to be healthy in order for our business to be healthy,” said Bryant.

“The goal has always been to work together to retain our own individual identities,” said Bryant. “Preserving the buildings, the history and the culture of community is all a part of that goal.”

Bryant said that shoppers are always surprised to learn that 70 percent of Dana’s business comes from the local community.

“If the local shopper disappears then we disappear,” said Bryant.

“We love the bump in business that we get from the tourists, but if the locals leave we will close our doors.”

Bryant believes that a healthy downtown corridor is one with varied businesses, from a pharmacy, bank, and grocer to retail like Dana’s. Those shops, she said, won’t survive on a tourists’ dollar.

But Bryant isn’t worried that the main street economy is going anywhere. The “Great Recession” and a disruptive Winslow Way reconstruction project haven’t prevented the Dana’s duo from creatively expanding business. In November, Dana’s found success with a twomonth, pop-up shop experiment when a prime Winslow Way space went vacant right before the holiday season.

In December Dana’s teamed up with a group of six artists who formerly occupied the tiny Ginger location on Madrone Lane. Together they made “Danger,” a play on Ginger and Dana’s, where the artists work is sold alongside goods with a more “modern” look than classic Dana style.

Bryant said it was an opportunity to snag a prime location right before the reconstructed street is revealed

and downtown makes its resurgence.

That resurgence, and the resiliency of local business is something Bryant firmly believes in.

Though the community has expanded and evolved, nearly doubling in population since Bryant first arrived, she feels it still has that same sense of creativity and engagement that’s uniquely Bainbridge.

Kurt Nickel A caregiving coach, or a coaching caregiver?

I

t is not surprising that Kurt Nickel became involved with Special Olympics a dozen years ago in Hawaii since he had a teenage daughter with intellectual disabilities.

states, including Washington and Hawaii. Now, he’s a track and field coach for the Golden Eagles, which offers sports training and competition for children (from 8 up) and adults with disabilities.

That’s not unusual since knowledge of people with developmental disabilities is often a prerequisite to coach or teach an activity that requires pushing oneself mentally to achieve a physical goal. But in Nickel’s case, his involvement has transcended his desire to be near his daughter.

He mentions others who are fellow volunteers, such as Adam and Tiffany Kleivin, Cindy Reese, and especially Kim Goodwin and Barbara Brewis, both of whom are special education teachers. All of the island’s four coaches have been certified through a training regimen.

“It started with me looking for activities for Rebecca- she’s 27 now - when we were living in Hawaii, and it continued when we moved here in 2005,” said Nickel. “She was always fond of bowling, and that got her into Special Olympic. Now she throws the shotput, among other things. For me, at least at first, it was just the appearance of being a coach, but it grows on you.

Now I’m more of a coach, than not, you could say.”

“The organization’s goal is simply participation and socialization,” he said, “so our job is to find out what they’re interested in, and then teach the basics and demonstrate how to do things. Some are more limited physically than others so you have to get medical input from a parent or caregiver. But for some of the athletes it goes beyond that into serious competition.”

Nickel said he has a reputation for pushing the athletes, most of whom are adults.

Before retirement, Nickel was a nuclear engineer who spent more than 30 years working as a civilian on U.S. Navy bases in several
