Vashon Health & Wellness Guide 2010

To Your Health! For the past several years, The Beachcomber has regularly published this health and wellness guide. Our hope is that it provides information on what all Islanders might need to grow healthy and stay well — from an acupuncturist for an aching back to a family doctor who will tend to loved ones when they are sick to a yoga class that will add serenity to someone’s hectic life. Vashon is fortunate to have a wealth of providers living and working here, offering up the skills they know best. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said, “Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity.” We hope Islanders find plenty of oppurtunity in these pages; we believe they are our way to help create a healthy community, and we extend special gratitude to the Vashon Health Center for sponsoring the guide. — Susan Riemer, Health and Wellness Guide editor Acupuncture ....................................3

E-mail: carrwilliamd@earthlink.net When we are honest with ourselves, we know the truth of the opening line of Scott Peck’s best-selling book, The Road Less Traveled, “Life is difficult.” Becoming the person one is “intended” to be, the person one has the potential to be, takes a commitment to inner work. This means becoming aware of the injuries, emotional and relational, one has suffered in the past and that often continue one’s suffering in the present, and then to heal and grow beyond them. But we need not, often cannot, do this work alone. The healing of inner wounds and the development of

Vashon Health & Wellness Guide 2010 inner clarity and strength usually best happens in the context of a safe, respectful and understanding relationship with an experienced guide in the inner life. It is possible to live happily. In his psychotherapy practice, William Carr uses his training in psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and clinical pastoral counseling, as well as more than 30 years of experience in counseling, therapy and teaching other therapists, to assist people in healing the wounds that linger from “the slings and arrows” of life, to develop inner strength and confidence to deal with life’s inevitable difficulties and to find and live the fulfilling and loving life of which they are capable. He works with individuals and couples, adults and adolescents.

Vashon Threshold Choir

Phone: Barb Adams at 567-5264 The Vashon Threshold Choir is a group of Island women who honor the ancient tradition of singing at the bedsides of people who are struggling, some with living, some with dying. Their singing may include simple songs, rounds, chants, lullabies, spirituals and hymns. The sound is soothing, relaxing and has been found to ease pain. The choir is invited to sing by family members and caregivers. The service is a gift; there is no charge. The women offer comfort and compassion in a small group of three or four singers and are available to sing in private homes, nursing homes and hospitals. If you or someone you know would like to be sung to, please let them know at 567-5264. Vashon Threshold Choir was formed in the spring of 2005 and accepts new singers who feel drawn to its kind of service. It is a sacred, delightful way to build community and be a part of sharing the gift of compassion at life’s thresholds. The group sings a cappella, so some musical ability is needed. They meet to rehearse twice a month and sing regularly at Vashon Community Care and when called to sing at the bedside.

(Store a minimum 3-day and preferably a 10-day to 2-week supply. Do not use milk jugs; 2 liter pop bottles can be used or food-grade plastic drums. Rotate every six months OR purify immediately before use, as described below.)

WATER PURIFICATION PRODUCT OR BOTTLE OF UNSCENTED LIQUID BLEACH TO PURIFY WATER.

(Use only regular household liquid bleach that contains 5.25 percent sodium hypo chlorite. Do not use scented bleaches, color-safe bleaches or bleaches with added cleaners. Add 16 drops of bleach per gallon or 8 drops of bleach per 2-liter bottle right before you use it, NOT before you store it. Add drops, stir and let stand for 30 minutes. If the water does not have a slight bleach odor, repeat the dosage and let stand another 15 minutes.

Both water and bleach must be changed out every year; strength of bleach deteriorates over time.

Store a minimum of a 3-day supply (and preferably a 10-day supply – 2 weeks supply) of foods requiring no refrigeration and little to no preparation or cooking. Be careful of high salt content, increasing thirst. Use a marker to date items. Inspect regularly for spoilage.

Never use a camp stove indoors!

1650 AM

Voice of Vashon has a 24/7 radio station on the air. Broadcasting on 1650 AM, VoV Standing By is a low power information service that can be heard right now in central Vashon. VoV Standing By uses a service called Travellers’ Information Service, similar to to the radio you can hear when going over Snoqualmie Pass. Intended to keep you up to date as you go through a community, this service will be used to inform Islanders about current events. In times of emergency, this may prove crucial as other methods of communication become unavailable. Right now VoV Standing By can be heard on much of Vashon and parts of Maury, with the signal getting clearer as you get closer to the transmitter up behind Granny’s Attic. In the future, more transmitters will be installed North of Vashon town and on Maury Island.

If an emergency happens, be sure to tune to 1650 AM.

Gyrotonic

Phone: Margaret Hoeffel at 601-1948 or Abby Enson at 459-7696 The Gyrotonic Expansion System is a machine-based workout rooted in the principles of yoga, dance and swimming. The system develops a strong flexible body with a knowledgeable awareness of one’s habitual movement patterns and structural alignment. The workout uses the muscles in their lengthened state, extending in spiraling motions outward from the body’s center to build resiliency and power in the tendons, ligaments and muscles while freeing and lubricating the joints. The integration of breath opens and cleanses the meridian pathways, activating the organs and the major systems of the body — endocrine, lymphatic, digestive, skeletal and muscular. Each workout is tailored to the needs of the individual, accommodating all levels of ability, from seniors to professional athletes.

Using hands that listen rather than manipulate, the Rosen Method practitioner focuses on chronic muscle tension. As relaxation occurs and the breath deepens, unconscious feelings, attitudes and memories may emerge. A Rosen Method practitioner has been trained to notice subtle changes in muscle tension and shifts in the breath and recognize these as indications that the client is relaxing and becoming more aware of his or her body and internal experience. The practitioner responds with touch and words, which allow the client to begin to recognize what has been held down by unconscious muscle tension. As this process unfolds, habitual tension and old patterns may be released, freeing the client to experience more aliveness, new choices in life and a greater sense of well-being.

Craniosacral therapy is a light touch manual therapy that addresses restrictions in the craniosacral system — the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. This vital system extends from the bones of the skull, face and mouth down to the sacrum. Craniosacral therapy can help to alleviate a range of illnesses, pains and dysfunction, such as chronic neck and back pain, acute injury, repetitive movement injury, TMJ problems, migraines and headaches, chronic fatigue, autism, otitis media, colic, stress and tension-related problems, as well as enhance overall wellness.

Aligning with the Earth’s rhythms and cycles, we enter a personal and subtle dance of inner and outer nature and return to an organic state of balanced vitality and energy as we move through the seasons of our lives with wholeness and harmony of body, mind and spirit. People of all ages benefit, addressing issues such as bonding/ sleep/tummy time, digestion, cognitive and other learning challenges, chronic pain, artistic or athletic performance or personal growth.
