Baby steps: How to begin an exercise routine Y

ou’ve heard your doctor tell you to exercise. You’ve read about the benefits of exercise in magazines and heard about it on the news a million times.

Regular exercise will help you control blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. When combined with a healthy diet and adequate sleep, regular exercise will help to prevent and reverse cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and will improve your breathing.

If you are in the “O-Zone” — overweight or obese — exercise will also help trim your weight and waistline, and reduce your risks for heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke. The list of benefits is endless.

Congratulations if you have finally decided it is time to start an exercise program. Good for you. But do you know how to begin a safe, effective exercise routine?

Here are few facts about exercise that are important for you to know before starting your program.

Four types of exercise will benefit you in different ways.

• Aerobic: Activities that strengthen your heart and lungs and increase your endurance like walking, swimming and biking.

• Strength training: Activities that build

muscle strength, muscle endurance and bone mass like, resistance training and weight lifting.

• Flexibility: Activities that increase range of motion in joints and flexibility of muscles, like stretching and yoga.

• Balance: Activities that strengthen core muscles and help prevent back injuries and falls like Tai Chi, Wii Fit balance games or standing on one foot.

All of these activities play a role in making you healthier and stronger.

Even doing household chores like housekeeping and laundry, gardening and mowing the lawn provide a variety of helpful activities.

Exercise should not be painful or cause injury.

• When doing aerobic exercise you should be able to maintain the exercise for an extended amount of time but still be able to talk. You should not get too out of breath. Stay within your target heart range for maximum effect and minimum risk.

• When lifting weights or using resistance bands, you should perform the exercise until the muscle starts feeling fatigued.

Forget about, “No pain, no gain.” It is not a helpful guideline.

• When doing stretching exercises, only stretch a muscle to the point of feeling a

slight tug, not a painful pull. Never bounce into or continually bounce during a stretch. You may tear a ligament or tendon.

Slow and steady is the key.

• When working on balance, always support yourself by holding onto a chair or wall when first starting out.

Starting an exercise program should be easy and enjoyable.

The American Heart Association recommends a minimum of 20 minutes of vigorous activity on three days per week or 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity on five days per week. More exercise is needed for weight loss.

Safety and effectiveness should be your primary concerns. Here are some good guidelines to follow: • Get medical clearance from your doctor before you start; • Start with five- to 10-minute bouts at a time and increase gradually; • Set a schedule to exercise 3 to 4 times per week to start; • Choose a mix of activities that you enjoy; • Monitor your exercise intensity and duration; and • Seek support from family, friends or a fitness center.

If all of this sounds difficult or overwhelming, don’t despair. There are a variety of proven programs in Kitsap County that can help you get started with a safe and effective exercise programs. Wellestablished programs for those who want to improve fitness and health include: • CAPRI Heart & Lung Institute in Bremerton, Port Orchard and Poulsbo; • Curves in Port Orchard, Poulsbo and Silverdale; • Bremerton Family YMCA in Bremerton; • Kingston and Silverdale Fitness Centers; • Silver Sneakers programs in various locations; and • Ultimate Performance Fitness Center in Poulsbo.

Regardless of which path you choose, make the commitment today to exercise regularly.

What’s that ringing in your ears? Tinnitus T

innitus, or ringing in the ear, can at best be a slight annoyance and at worst be debilitating. The important thing to know is that if one experiences a sudden onset of tinnitus, one should get to their physician right away, said Megan Nightingale, AuD, of Peninsula Hearing Inc.

“There is no magic pill that will cure tinnitus,” Nightingale said.

The good news is there has been an explosion of research on tinnitus and some promising treatment options are now available.

Everyone experiences ear noises occasionally.

This is completely normal.

Tinnitus is described as ear or head noise that lasts more than five minutes at least two times per week. Chronic tinnitus happens when one experiences tinnitus for at least six to 12 months. The research shows that 10 to 15 percent of all adults in the United States have chronic tinnitus.

Several studies have looked into the physical causes of tinnitus, aided by new brain imaging technology. Studies conducted by researchers at the Department of Clinical Otolaryngology at the State University of New York using computerized brain tomography have found one of the physical processes involved in the perception of tinnitus.

The condition apparently stems from interference in the processes of conducting or inhibiting neural transmissions within the auditory pathway, the part of the brain responsible for conducting information coming from the hearing nerve. This information helps us to understand why tinnitus is present, whether

The U.S. Veterans Administration National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research, located right here in the Northwest, has taken the last decade to study the effectiveness of various tinnitus treatment methods. This has enabled specialists like Nightingale to be confident in choosing Tinnitus management options for patients because there is solid evidence for their effectiveness.

For example, the research shows that the use of sound therapy is crucial in management of tinnitus, whether the sound comes from everyday items or from something that is worn on the ear.

Drug therapy is a quality of life issue As patients age, there often becomes a need for drug therapy to maintain one’s quality of life. However, due to the risks of drug therapy, consulting with experts in medication therapy management is essential. The average life expectancy has increased by 30 years over the last century. People now live to an average age of 78 — and some well into their 100s — with the help of modern medicine.

With increased life expectancy comes an increase in chronic diseases, medication and complexity of medical management. Unfortunately, some patients have fallen through the cracks of our medical system and without proper medication therapy management may be harmed by what is supposed to be good for them.

One in eight elderly patients are hospitalized because of adverse drug reactions, and 10 percent of all emergency department visits are the result of medication errors. The average senior fills nine to 13 prescription medications each year and is taking two to four non-prescription medications each day.

patients can be taking unnecessary medications which can lead to drug interactions and harm to the patient. By having a complete medication therapy management service medication errors can be greatly reduced and your health may be improved. Many times these medication errors occur due to: multiple medications, drug interactions, forgetting to take your medications or taking them twice, and switching medications frequently. Many seniors experience some mental decline and forgetfulness in their lifetime, but some common medications can make this worse. Medications can also increase a patient’s risk of falling, which is why discussing medications with a health care team can be a valuable strategy. Medication therapy management is a way to make sure that a patient’s medical records in the doctor’s office, medication records at the pharmacy and home medication records all have the same instructions.

Elderly patients have less fat in their bodies and take in less fluid, which can lead to changes in the way drugs work. With increasing age, the body’s ability to process medications changes because of changes in organs, hydration, nutrition, and body fat composition. As we age, our organs become older too, which can lead to a change in the rate of metabolism of drugs in our bodies.

Many times in the medical community, older patients are over treated or under treated because of medication therapy management not being conducted on a regular basis. Participants are offered a continental breakfast, nutritious lunch, and snacks daily. The center’s large and wheelchair accessible kitchen allows participants to assist in meals, snacks, and community service projects if they choose.

There are at least two trained staff members on-hand at all times at the center to assist clients with eating and personal care. Applications and assessments are required prior to services to guarantee the most knowledgeable and supportive assistance. “We want to be certain that our center is appropriate for all of our clients’ needs. Our standards of care are very high and the peace of mind for caregivers knowing that loved ones are safe and well taken care of is essential”. Episcopal Retirement Communities opened the non-profit Adult Day Service facility on the ground floor of the former St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Bremerton earlier this year.

Administrator David Johns, who oversees Canterbury Care Center and Canterbury Manor, realizes the importance and need of the adult day center due to the limited services and resources available in the area.

“Our adult day center is important for a variety of reasons. Our center supports seniors to stay in their own homes while ensuring respite for the primary caregivers,” Johns said.

Most recently a computer center was donated by a local organization for seniors to learn basic computer skills.

or mental limitations. Caregiving is a labor of love that allows a vulnerable person to stay in the home for as long as they can be cared for safely and comfortably.

Although caregiving can be very rewarding, it can also be stressful. There may be times when you feel squeezed by the demands of giving care, balancing family obligations, working and taking care of yourself. At times, you may not know where to go for answers, emotional support and practical advice _ or how to get a break from your caregiving responsibilities.

Some of these suggestions might help you: • Talk with your doctor about how caregiving is impacting your health. He or she may be able to provide helpful suggestions; • Allow others to help you. Ask family and friends for specific help and accept the help they offer; • Learn to take care of yourself. You deserve some time to yourself to relax, socialize, and get some much-needed

You are not alone. There are many others like you. In fact, in more than 23 percent of households nationwide individuals are providing care for someone who is at least 50 years old. If you are caring for an older adult there is help for you. Through the National Family Caregiver Support Program numerous resources are available in your community to help you give care and take care of yourself.

Olympic Peninsula Kidney Center: Saving Lives for 30 years In 1986 the Kidney Center built a facility at 2740 Clare Avenue near Harrison Medical Center. In April 2001 it opened a satellite office in Port Orchard and another in June 2006 in Poulsbo. Most recently the Bremerton facility relocated to its current position at 2613 Wheaton Way and in June of this year the fourth facility was opened in Port Townsend. Currently OPKC serves approximately 200 patients at the four locations, and also provides inpatient dialysis services at Harrison Medical Center under a contractual agreement.

Dialysis is a life-saving and life-extending measure for patients who undergo the process. It becomes necessary when the kidneys, which remove waste, salt and extra water from the body and keep a safe level of certain chemicals in your blood, such as potassium, sodium and bicarbonate, no longer function properly. The most common causes of kidney failure are diabetes and high blood pressure.

In hemodialysis, the most frequently used form of dialysis, the patient’s blood is pumped through the blood compartment

of an external dialyzer, or artificial kidney.

The cleansed blood is then returned to the patient’s body. Two needles must be inserted into the patient’s body, usually in a vascular access located in the arm.

In the early years, it was more common for kidney patients to receive their treatment at home. Later, treatment in a dialysis facility became more common, but there is now a trend back to more home treatment for

greater patient convenience. Some newer technology allows two- to three-hour dialysis sessions at home which are given four to six times a week, which more closely mimicking actual kidney functioning.

Current estimates see more than 26 million people in the United States with some form of chronic kidney disease, which can be very mild or progress to the point where dialysis is needed. There are presently

nearly 500,000 patients receiving dialysis in the United States. Kidney disease has a mortality rate of from 18 to 25 percent.

Hand in Hand for RA (www.handinhandforRA.com) is a national awareness campaign that encourages people with the painful chronic joint disease rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to learn about the benefits of volunteering and share their own inspirational stories.

“Volunteering is a huge part of my

life that has really helped me through some tough times dealing with a chronic disease,” says Seth Ginsberg, cofounder and president of grassroots arthritis group CreakyJoints, a sponsor of the campaign.

“Things as simple as getting involved with senior citizens in your local community — reading to them, driving them to the grocery store and even just talking with them — all help keep your mind off your disease.”

When Debbie McGrady, a 55-year-old mother of two and part-time bank teller, was diagnosed with RA, she decided she wasn’t going to allow the disease to take over her life.

Debbie has gotten involved with Hand in Hand for RA and has found volunteering to be very rewarding and fun as she drives seniors to their doctor’s appointments, to the drugstore and on other errands.

“Helping others and giving back to the community has assisted me in keeping the focus on my life and not on my disease,” says Debbie. “Volunteering can be as simple as supervising children at an after-school program or coaching your children’s sports team.”

(ARA) - With the popularity of movies like Sex and the City and the revival of the 50-year-old fashionista, the 42.9 million baby boomer women in America are approaching aging with confidence and style.

While talking about many sensitive topics is no longer off-limits to this vocal group, there still remain several embarrassing health topics that many women will not even discuss with their doctors, let alone with their girlfriends. As a result, they suffer through these manageable health issues in silence rather than finding the solutions they need.

It is important for women to be direct with their doctors when talking about all health issues, even those that may embarrass them. Anne Abernathy, a six-time Olympic luger who now serves as an advocate for women’s health, shares tips for being tenacious when it comes to your health: Talk to your doctor: You may be embarrassed by a change in your body, but when you talk about it with a friend, family member or doctor, you can find helpful ways to deal with it. You may even be able to provide helpful advice to others experiencing the same thing. Facing your health condition head-on and learning how to manage it will help you to move on and live your best life.

Educate yourself: Learn about the kinds of changes you can expect as you age and take some preventative measures to help you avoid or lessen the symptoms of some of them. There are a lot of great sources online where you can learn from experts, as well as others who have first-hand knowledge of the issues. Information is the best tool you can have as your own health advocate.

Navigate your options and solutions: There are a lot of options available to help you manage and prevent certain conditions and ailments. For instance, vitamins to help prevent bone loss or discreet thin pads or underwear for women who have bladder control issues. Talk with your doctor to find out what supplements or products might be

right for you.

Achieve a healthy life: In the end, you just want to get on with living your life and achieving your goals. No health issue should keep you from doing that. When you follow these tips and learn how to manage your condition, you will find yourself with more options, less limitations and more confidence to do what you love most.

Many of these health problems are extremely common, like bladder-control issues, which affect more than 25 percent of women older than 40.
