fter you walk or drive onto the ferry from Anacortes, watch the mainland fade into the distance. Relax and relish the scenery around you. The ferry serves the four major islands – San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw – but smaller, outer islands are accessible by chartered boats, kayaks, and planes. The San Juans are known for their small-town charm, but they also offer the best in outdoor recreation, world-class musical performances, incredible local art, live theatre, delectable food, and fun for kids of all ages. National Geographic Traveler magazine named the San Juan Islands on its list of top 10 best vacations spots for summer 2011. O
rcas Island offers a wide expanse of pastoral beauty, its rocky shorelines sloping up to loamy farmland, rising upwards again to form rocky peaks. The island’s 56.9 square miles are dotted with small hamlets offering world-class restaurants, boutique shopping, activity tours and sundries. Scattered among the trees and along the shores are a variety of quaint and lovely bed and breakfasts and hotels. West Sound and sunny Deer Harbor are on the southwestern prong of Orcas Island. West Sound features a cafe, a public dock and a marina where float planes disembark. The small hamlet of Deer Harbor has lodging, a restaurant, and two marinas offering kayak, boat and whale watching tours. The Orcas ferry landing hosts accommodations, restaurants, a gourmet grocery and deli, post office, a few small shops, a public dock, boat rentals, whale watching, water taxi, car and moped rentals, and a taxi and shuttle service. To the east lies a woodsy residential area along Killebrew Lake Road; to the northwest, Orcas Road winds through grassy meadows toward the island’s center, Eastsound. Eastsound is home to an array of charming shops, restaurants and specialty boutiques. You’ll find a public library, a historical museum, grocery stores, a pharmacy, restaurants and more. Along its north and south shorelines are three public parks, and Buck Park has a playground and soccer fields. Orcas

Center hosts a lively variety of musical, theatre and artistic offerings. Southeast of Eastsound, Olga Road leads to 5,200-acre Moran State Park. Drive, hike or cycle to the top of 2,400foot Mount Constitution, where you can take in breathtaking 360-degree views of the outlying islands and the Cascade Mountain range. Trails provide easy walks or rigorous, hilly climbs. Afterward, you might enjoy picnicking at Cascade Lake’s sun-warmed swimming area, playground and picnic tables with barbecues. Beyond the park lies Olga, with its eclectic art co-op and restaurant; past it you’ll find secluded Obstruction Pass state park, with hike-in campgrounds along a lovely pebbled beach. Point Lawrence Road leads to the hamlet of Doe Bay, with a historic resort, sundries shop and clothing optional hot tub. ump on the ferry for a 45-minute ride from Anacortes to Lopez Island. Then drive just 4 miles to the village, the hub of the island. While in your car be prepared to wave to fellow motorists- friendliness is one of the island’s charms. If you arrive on bike you can tour the flat terrain, which makes it such a popular cycling destination. So popular that the islands hosts the Tour de Lopez, an annual non-competitive bicycle tour through the scenic landscape of the island on the last weekend in April. Throughout the year look for different activities, like the Winter Village Gathering held on the Friday after Thanksgiving at dusk. Also, check the bulletin boards at the markets for announcements about art shows, concerts and cultural and social events. Visitors can spend time browsing through the various shops and stop for lunch or have a coffee at one of the cafes or eateries. Accommodations on the island include a motel, bed and breakfasts, vacation home rentals and three campgrounds. For outdoor lovers, Lopez has beaches to dig your toes into and vistas to marvel. Odlin County Park and Spencer Spit State Park are great places to enjoy a barbecue or a picnic while admiring winged wildlife like Peregrine Falcons and Osprey. Iceberg Point, Shark Reef Park and Watmough Head offer solitude and perhaps even an orca whale sighting. Dad likes to golf. Mom likes to shop. And the kids, well, what they really want is a birds-eye view of those killer whales that they've heard so much about, and then go see a movie, or maybe go swimming or bowling or skateboarding, and grab a pizza, of course, afterwards. On San Juan Island, you'll fi nd the whole family is in luck. You can do all the above and more, perhaps all in one day, if you get up and out the door early enough. When you step off the ferry in Friday Harbor, you've arrived at the heartbeat of San Juan Island. The Town of Friday Harbor, one of Puget Sound's last remaining 19th-century wooden fishing villages and the only incorporated town in San Juan County, boasts a year-round population of just over 2,000 that seemingly quadruples with the hustle and bustle of a steady stream of visitors and part-time residents on any given summer day. As the island's commercial core, Friday Harbor is home to numerous art galleries, an assortment of outdoor parks, a movie theater, an art museum, a historical museum, a military museum and a whale museum as well. And whether you're after a quick bite to eat or in search of an evening of fi ne-dinning, there's an abundance of quality restaurants and fi rst-class cafes downtown that can satisfy the palate and the pocketbook of just about anyone. The town is also home to the bustling Port of Friday Harbor, caretaker of one of the most charming and liveliest marinas in all of north Puget Sound. Soak up the sunshine while strolling the docks or kick back in the shade for a change of pace and enjoy live music and a view of the harbor at the SPR INGTIDE 2011/12
port's Jack Fairweather Park. Speaking of sunshine, here's a fact to keep in mind. San Juan, like its sister islands, lies in the rain shadow of the Olympic Peninsula and that effect produces 247 days of sunshine a year, on average. Don't forget the sunscreen. You're liable to soak up a lot of rays with so much sunshine reflecting off the waters that surround the island. Geography is a key reason why San Juan Island is such a sought-after place for summer vacation. And it's on the west side of the island that you'll find San Juan's rugged beauty in full display. Situated closer to Canada than mainland U.S.A., the west side is no more than a 15-minute drive from Friday Harbor and there you'll find dazzling sunsets, sweeping vistas and stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. There's more than 3,000 acres open to the public and nearly all the parks and nature preserves on the west side offer an opportunity to tip-toe along the waterfront. Here you'll find a state park with a historic lighthouse, a picnic area and an area devoted to land-based whale watching, a campground with mooring and a boat ramp, a pair of National Park Service historic parks and mile after mile after mile of hiking trails. All told, the west side features 30-plus miles of shoreline that dip into the water of Haro Strait, one of the most heavily traveled shipping lanes on the West Coast and a favorite hunting ground of the region's resident, and endangered, killer whales. A
s you pull into Anacortes, perched on the rim of the sea between the mainland and the islands, you can shift into vacation mode and get ready to explore. Mount Erie might catch your attention first, jutting out of the landscape like a battering ram on the south side of the city. From its 1,300-foot peak you can feast on a panoramic view of Skagit Valley farmlands, Whidbey Island and the San Juan Islands archipelago. Cap Sante might be next: the enormous hunk of rock at the north end of the waterfont creates a protected harbor, home to a publicly owned marina and one of the largest commercial fishing fleets in Washington state. You can park and picnic at the very tip of the Cap and watch the city’s bustling waterfront. At the city’s west end, just beyond the ferry terminal, is 220acre Washington Park featuring 75 campsites, a boat launch, a playground, sandy beaches, restrooms, a picnic shelter, and lots and lots of waterfront. That’s just a taste of the many opportunities for outdoor recreation Anacortes has to offer. Of the city’s 14 square miles, which include two square miles of water, 50 percent is either parkland or forests. If you’re wondering about the name “Anacortes,” wonder no

more: the city bears the name of Anna Curtis Bowman, wife of one of the first settlers to stake a claim on Fidalgo Island. Yup, Anacortes is on an island. Fidalgo Island was named after Salvador Fidalgo, a Spanish explorer and map-maker, who cruised the area in the 1790s under Spanish naval commander Fransico de Eliza. The town has historically been engaged in fishing, lumber production and boatbuilding. Anacortes is also the ancestral home of the Samish people. The Samish Indian Nation is a leader in regional habitat restoration projects and owns an art gallery in Old Town that features the works of Native American artists of the Pacific Northwest. The city is home to about 16,500 residents, equal to the entire population of San Juan County, and they’re a lively group. Whether it’s art galleries, antique shops, museums, restaurants or music you’re into, there’s always something going on downtown.

Shipwreck Day
An annual one-day flea market and citywide garage sale held July 16. Each year the city blocks off several downtown streets to accommodate this campy, large-scale community favorite.
What the Heck Fest
The event runs July 15-17. At the heart of the festival is a community dinner show and concert, while performers pop up at different venues to offer up their best in music, movies, literature and art.
Anacortes Arts Festival
The main course of this annual weekend event, Aug. 5-7, is lots of live music and art in every sort of medium imaginable. Prefestival events include a July 22 “Paper Boys� concert and a July 30 “Art Dash� run.
Oyster Run
The largest motorcycle rally in the Pacific Northwest turns 30 this year and “hogs� will be everywhere, come Sept. 25. Organizers estimate as many as 15,000 bikes or more toured the area as part of the most recent run.

Orcas Island
You must visit Orcas Center, the largest venue on the island, located north of Eastsound and catch a show. For summer entertainment, Eastsound Village Green dazzles its audience with an outdoor stage. You can also check out the Odd Fellows Hall, featuring dance and music, and the Orcas Grange, home to The Actors Theatre of Orcas Island. There’s also Emmanuel Episcopal Church, which has live music during the summer.

Fairweather Park next to Friday Harbor Marina. Walk up Spring Street and find the San Juan Islands Museum of Art. Want to see more? Just keep walking through downtown. By Colleen Smith Armstrong f there is one island activity that appeals to all ages and skill levels, it’s bicycling. The three main islands offer terrain that is suitable for just about anyone who likes to cycle. Here’s a rundown of the bicycling opportunities on each island.

a switchback section in the middle that averages two miles at over 10 percent grade. In Moran State Park there are several mountain-biking trails open, depending on the season. For an easier ride, loop through West Sound or into Deer Harbor. The ride into Eastsound through pastoral Crow Valley is relaxing with its tree-lined, quiet roads.
Lopez Island
San Juan Island
Lopez is perfect for more relaxed cyclists. With its flat roads, you can take your time and relish the scenery. Bike from the ferry landing to town, enjoy a picnic lunch, and check out what the village has to offer. For an afternoon jaunt, head down to the south end of the island to either Agate Beach or Watmough Bight. Or visit Spencer Spit State Park on the northeast corner of the island or Shark Reef Sanctuary on the southwest corner. Lopez is also home to the annual Tour de Lopez, a non-competitive event that attracts bicyclists from up and down the coast. For information on the tour, visit www.lopezisland.com.

Are you ready for some serious mountain biking? For those who salivate at the thought of Category 1 climbs, there is the challenge of Mount Constitution, which rises 2,400 feet above sea level. If Lopez and Orcas are the two extremes, San Juan meets cyclists in the middle. On the west side, the views are stunning. The easiest road heads out to Roche Harbor. It has good visibility and is smooth. Head south to American Camp and enjoy sweeping views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. If the weather’s really clear, you’ll be treated to views of Mount Baker and, sometimes, Mount Rainier. Note to mountain bikers: Roche Harbor owns property abutting state Department of Natural Resources land; cyclists can share the footpaths with hikers, dogs and horses. Pull off and park at the intersection of Roche Harbor Road and West Valley Road.

can’t be beat for a day of fun out on the golf course. Golfers of all stripes and skill, from the novice to the scratch, to the once-inevery-blue-moon, can find what they’re looking for at any of the nine-hole courses on Lopez, Orcas and San Juan islands. All three are open to the public, and are supported and utilized by an enthusiastic and active membership as well. While similar in many ways, each course has its own unique character. Here’s a sample at a glance: Nestled in the heart of picturesque Crow Valley, Orcas Island Golf Club captures the spirit of an old Scottish country club and offers just the right blend of charm and challenge with its dipsydoodle fairways and strategically placed water hazards and sand traps. The course is located about five miles from the ferry landing and no more than three from Eastsound village. Its centerpiece is an expansive farmhouse, built in the 1880s, that’s been converted into a clubhouse. It features a driving range that’s proven exceedingly popular since it was installed several years ago. The course spans 5,145 yards, for a round of 18, and par is 71. Lopez Island Golf Club features a series of gently rolling, fairly skinny fairways that are mostly lined by trees. The course covers 5,304 yards for 18 holes and includes three par 3 holes, four par 4 holes and a pair of par 5’s, including the notorious No. 5, which plays longer than its 509 yards from tee to cup, especially in the event of strong northerly winds. In keeping with the laid-back nature that is Lopez, the golf course, located just
south of Lopez Village, is equally informal as well. Open daily, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the club house is manned by volunteers and club members, and tee times are not required nor are they taken. It’s first come, first served. With snow-capped Mount Baker looming on the eastern horizon and the Olympic mountains to the south, and with the sparkling waters of Griffin Bay just off shore, San Juan Golf & Country Club is as scenic a course as one can hope to find. But don’t take it lightly, as this 9-hole course is rated the secondtoughest in the region, according to the Northwest Pacific Golf Association. While par for 18 holes is 71, the course record is 65. San Juan Golf & Country Club hosts one of the island’s premier summertime events, the annual San Juan Island Celebrity Golf Classic. The Classic, which takes place in early June, is the longestrunning charitable event on the island, with proceeds benefiting a long-list of island-based non-profits, like the animal shelter and family resource center. Past Classic celebrities include former Mariners slugger Edgar Martinez, NFL and UW quarterback Sonny Sixkiller, and Alan White, drummer for the legendary rock band Yes.

Lopez Island Upright Head: Upright Head is a hike within easy distance from the ferry landing. Enjoy the 20-acre rugged bluff featuring towering firs tracing the shoreline and a web of trails that zigzag under evergreens and madrones. That peaceful body of water to the east of the ferry landing is Shoal Bay, and to the north are Harney and Upright channels, and a sweeping view of Orcas and Shaw Islands. Odlin County Park: Hikers at the park’s 100-acre forest can enjoy nearly three miles of criss-crossing trails. The mainly flat, traversing trails meander along a steep shoreline bluff looking over Upright Channel to the west and out on to Shaw Island. The park is part of the 140-mile Cascadia Marine Trail system that spans Puget Sound and the Salish Sea. Hummel Lake: If picnicking and a gentle stroll is your style, consider the 80-acre nature preserve that is the freshwater Hummel Lake. Located close to Lopez Village, it is a convenient location with a car park, board walk and fishing dock. Lopez Hill: Centrally located, Lopez Hill is the island’s tallest peak, at 535 feet, spanning 400 acres. The trail from base to the summit winds through shady slopes, canyons, open meadows and prairie land. The summit will give you views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and beyond to the south. Shark Reef: If you are traveling to the south end of the island, make sure not to miss the jewel that is Shark Reef. An easy stroll through the forest takes you out to a rocky stretch of coast land that gives a clear view to Cattle Point on San Juan Island.
Orcas Island Moran State Park: Hike 30 miles of trails for all different abilities including Mount Constitution, standing at 2,409 feet, making it the highest point in the San Juans. At the entrance to the road leading to the top of Mount Constitution, near the Cascade Lake recreation area, a very large map lists the route, terrain and distance of the majority of the paths and trails. Located on the eastern side of the island, the 5,000-plus-acre park is overflowing with old growth forests, lush alpine meadows, five lakes and one of Washington State Park’s most popular campgrounds located along the shoreline. Turtleback Mountain: Two trails lead to the top of the second tallest peak in the San Juans, Turtleback Mountain, standing at 1,520 feet. The southern route, though steeper, is more popular as it provides sweeping views all the way to the summit. At a leisurely pace, you’ll need over an hour to reach the top. The northern trail is more heavily wooded and passes through oldSPR INGTIDE 2011/12
growth forests, wetlands and an open meadow or two. Obstruction Pass/Killebrew Lake: Obstruction Pass is at the very tip of the southeast side at the entrance to East Sound. The 80-acre state-owned recreation site hosts a dozen spartan camp sites and a rocky beach surrounded by an expansive cove on the waterfront. Hikers can reach the beach with an easy mile-long walk from the parking lot at Trailhead Road, which connects to Obstruction Pass Road. Killebrew Lake is about five miles east of the ferry landing.
San Juan Island
There’s not enough time in one day to do every hike on the west side of San Juan Island, so set aside two or three days to explore. Mount Finlayson/South Beach: Mount Finlayson is more like a hill standing only 295 feet tall. It is located on the southern tip of the island and is one of the most popular hiking areas for locals and visitors. For a close-up view of the Olympic Mountains, Haro and Juan de Fuca straits, and Vancouver Island take the ridge line trail. On the north side, a trail drops down from the parking lot into a dense forest, past a pair of saltwater lagoons, and climbs to the top of the ridge where the two trails intersect. Lime Kiln State Park/Lime Kiln Preserve: The state park and the county-owned nature preserve of more than 210 acres of assorted natural habitat, host a network of hiking trails stretching from the shoreline to a series of rocky cliffs overlooking the Haro Strait and onto Vancouver Island. Other attractions include the historic lighthouse and a killer whale-watch park. Mount Young: Take a stroll beneath a forested canopy, past an 1860s British Marine cemetery, along open meadows of Garry oaks and then on to a half-mile hike to the summit. The 650-foot summit opens up to a view of the entire south end of the island. Roche Harbor Highlands/Mitchell Hill: The Highlands, at the north end of the island, have over 10 miles of hiking trails including a 3-mile loop around a large freshwater reservoir, which takes about an hour to circle and leads to Mitchell Hill. Mitchell Hill, a 386-acre state recreation site, features a variety of terrain, dense forests and a seasonal stream. You can enjoy the feeling of being lost in the woods, even though you know you’re not.

liding along the surface of the sea is a wholly different way to experience the San Juan Islands. Harbor seals pop up just feet away, inspecting your craft with sweet, curious brown eyes like Golden Retrievers’. Sinuous river otter dive for fish with slaps of their shiny tails. As you slip quietly along the shore you’ll pass slowly enough to examine bright starfish, intertidal sea life and a myriad of seabirds. You might see a bald eagle dive for prey or come upon orca whales, porpoises or sea lions. First-time kayakers should always paddle with a guide who knows the area, currents, and how far to stay from marine life. Kayak tour companies on Lopez, Orcas and San Juan provide all the equipment you need to have a safe and fun time. Many guides are also trained naturalists.

Cascadia Kayaks in Lopez Village offers guided kayak trips, kayak classes and lessons, and kayak and bicycle rentals. Lopez Island Kayaks on Fisherman Bay Road provides all the equipment necessary – as well as advice on proper clothing, safety information and training prior to departure. On Orcas Island, there are many fi ne kayak tour companies that offer trips from several locations: Deer Harbor, Doe Bay, Rosario, West Beach and West Sound. Kayakers departing from the west side of San Juan Island may be treated to a chance encounter with the resident killer whales that spend a large portion of the summer navigating through the San Juans. Kayakers may also encounter Dall’s porpoise, Minke whales, sea lions and sea birds. The more adventurous may want to get out and experience the San Juan Islands for a longer period; guides offer
full-day, two- to five-day and week-long trips. Kayaking can be enjoyed during much of the spring, summer and fall, and is suitable for nearly every age.

Eastsound offers some great little parks, like Waterfront Park, where the wooded and grassy areas provide a natural barrier to traffic. Walk along Crescent Beach to clamber over heaps of driftwood or rest on a log at North Beach and take in the sunset or skip stones. Check our Farms section to find places where kids can ride ponies, feed and pet alpacas or collect eggs. Don’t miss Moran State Park. Bring your buckets and shovels to Cascade Lake sandy swimming area and playground. Rent a peddle-boat, lunch at the picnic tables, cast a line from the fishing dock, or follow the trail to the “jumping tree� that leans out over the lake. Gentle terrain allows for leisurely bike rides, especially when pulling a tot-trailer. You can prowl the beach and woods at Odlin Park or head to Spencer Spit State Park to watch the ferries go by. Other parks include Shark Reef Park, a short forest hike to a rocky promontory looking out toward San Juan Island, and Agate Beach County Park at the south end of the island, great for bird-watching and tide pools. For a quiet hour or two, visit the Lopez Island Library. Or stop by the Lopez Historical Museum, in the heart of Lopez Village. Take in a play or concert at the San Juan Community Theatre, or visit the Whale Museum to learn about the San Juans’ majestic whales. Visit the light house at Lime Kiln State Park, then watch for seals, Dahl porpoises, minke whales or resident orcas passing by. American Camp and English Camp offer a glimpse into history, and False Bay hosts tide pools. South Beach has a sunny bigsky vista with hiking trails through the scrub and a long stretch of sandy beach. You might want to hike up Mount Young for a beautiful view, play a game of pick-up at Sunken Park’s basketball court, or stroll through the Westcott Bay Reserve sculpture garden. Other parks include San Juan County Park, Jakles Lagoon, Jackson Beach, Deadman Bay, and Small Pox Bay. Lakedale Resort offers small craft rentals, fishing and swimming; Roche Harbor Village and San Juan Fitness also have swimming pools. E
xploring the history of the San Juan Islands is rather easy to do. Images of the human history that set the stage for what the islands are today are tightly woven into the landscape and still fresh at hand. Depending on what bend in the road or turn of the hiking trail you take, you just might stumble upon a rustic-looking barn that’s nearly 100 years old. Human history began with the comings and goings of various Coast Salish tribes and the eventual formation of villages by several of them. Salish-speaking people, chiefly the Lummi, Samish and Swinomish, fished, hunted, traded and maintained a large presence in the islands until the late 1880s. The main village was situated in what is now the core of Eastsound Village on Orcas Island. Farming, fishing and logging were the mainstays of the islands’ pioneer economy, but the islands’ fractured topography also lured a long line of bootleggers, smugglers and disenchanted sailors. You can actually reach out and touch the vestiges of what was arguably the most pivotal point in the history of the San Juans, the joint occupation by U.S. and British troops of San Juan Island, from 1859 to 1872. The peaceful settlement of the two nations’ international boundary dispute, commonly referred to as the Pig War, stands as a testament to the power of diplomacy and a defining epoch in island history. Had Kaiser Wilhelm I, who mediated the settlement, sided with the British, the San Juans would belong to Canada. The National Parks Service commemorates the peaceful settlement by keeping much of both military encampments intact at two separate historic parks, American Camp at San Juan Island’s south end, and English Camp to the north. The San Juans are home to six different lighthouses, a legacy to the San Juans’ fi xture in the maritime world. The islands boast no fewer than 13 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Roche Harbor Resort’s Hotel de Haro (1886), Rosario Mansion (1905), Shaw Island’s Little Red Schoolhouse (1890), and Port Stanley School House (1917) on Lopez. Other things to do Shaw Island The best gifts sometimes come in the smallest of packages. And Shaw Island is petite, there’s no doubt about that. With a total land mass of slightly less than eight square miles, Shaw is the smallest of the San Juans’ four ferry-served islands by a long shot. The next smallest, Lopez, is more than three times its size. It’s tallest peak, Ben Nevis Hill, weighs in at a mere 385 feet. Situated smack dab in the geographic heart of the cluster of islands that make up San Juan County, Shaw is home to a pair of biological preserves and about 150 year-round residents. It hosts two orders of Catholic nuns, each with its own monastery. It boasts a former oneroom schoolhouse (built in the 1890s) that’s listed on the state and the national registers of historic places. The island is home to one of the county’s more popular campgrounds, South Beach, which, in addition to its waterfront location on scenic Indian Cove, features the longest stretch of white sandy beach – 3,200 feet to be precise – that the San Juans have to offer. The 60-acre county park has 11 campsites, it’s situated on the south side of the island, about two miles from the ferry landing, and is exceedingly popular as a day-use park and prime picnic spot. It’s also among the many stopover points along the Cascadia Marine Park trail system, a network of campsites, access spots and rest stops that stretch from the Canadian border, to the north, down to the southernmost point of Puget Sound, near Olympia, and that caters exclusively to kayakers and sailboaters.
Diving The undersea world of the San Juan Islands is a sight to behold. You can’t see it from the surface, of course. But if you could, what you’d notice are great big swaths of eelgrass teeming with baby salmon, sand lance, surf smelt and rolling with the tides, and all sorts of other crustacean-like creatures waddling along just about every blade of grass in search of food, shelter or a safe place to hide. Did you notice that grove of gigantic, coneshaped fluff y-white plumose anemones next

to them? Or that dazzling assortment of blue and purple urchins? Did you see that flash of reddish-orange whoosh by. It’s a Pacific Octopus dashing back home to its crab-shell littered den. It lives next door to a gnarlylooking wolf eel, an impressive creature that’s somewhat prehistoric in appearance. Together with copious amounts of sunshine, the tides and terrain of the San Juans, along with a steady influx of nutrients from the nearby Fraser, Skagit and Snohomish rivers, combine to create a veritable Disneyland for the underwater enthusiast. Birding You don’t need to be a naturalist to enjoy the variety of birds found within the islands. Early spring has an abundance birds, as wintering birds have not yet left and southern migrants are arriving. Audubon field trips visit quiet bays looking for ducks, loons, and grebes with partially molted to sparkling plumage, long before they head to far away breeding grounds. Trumpeter Swans, Common Murres, Hummingbirds, Mt. Bluebirds and Townsend Solitaries are also around. Mornings in May and June are fi lled with song. Winter Wren’s penny whistle song brightens dark forests of Moran and Spencer’s Spit State Parks. By June, Common Nighthawks arrive and Red-tailed hawk chicks are flying. Summer is a quiet, secretive time as young are on the nest. Western Bluebirds start a second or third brood. Brilliant feathers begin to fade and show wear. Male Harlequin Ducks return from the mountains and feed near rocky shorelines off Cattle Point. July 1 is the official beginning of shorebird migration. Bird numbers have more than doubled, counting adults and youngsters, and they are on the move. Winter settles in and the annual Christmas Bird Count is underway, but the sounds of spring are just weeks away.

ithin the San Juan Islands is a 450-acre national wildlife refuge, established to protect colonies of nesting seabirds, endangered Steller sea lions, and other marine animals. The islands are home to three endangered resident orca pods. Lime Kiln State Park has the nation’s only park set aside for land-based whale watching. The whales are called “residents” because they spend much of the year here. Their population was 99 in 1995, then dropped to 79 in 2001. It climbed to 80 in 2002, 83 in 2003, 85 in 2004 and, in 2005, 89. It has seesawed the past few years and is now 86, according to the Center for Whale Research. The killer whale has come to symbolize the sensitivity of our marine environment. The National Marine Fisheries Services believes pollution, scarcity of prey and effects from vessels and sound pollution are major threats to the whales’ health, and the whales are listed as endangered in the U.S. and Canada. Those hoping to catch a glimpse of orca whales need to be aware of a new set of distance rules announced by the National Oceans and Atmospheric Administration. It was the length of one football field – now it’s two. That’s how close any ship, boat or vessel – kayaks too – will be permitted to get to any of the Southern Resident killer whales. The new federal rules went into effect in early May and apply to all types of boats, including motor boats, sail boats and kayaks, in the inland waters of Washington state. Vessels will be prohibited from approaching any killer whale closer than 200 yards and from intercepting an orca or positioning in its path. Local whale watching businesses assure visitors that they can still view whales from that distance and will go home with a memorable experience of being up close and personal. WHALES & WILDLIFE in Washington state. The islands also are home to barn owls, red hawks, golden eagles, osprey, peregrine falcons and turkey vultures. The great blue heron, a hypnotic and methodical hunter, is a common sight on the islands’ shores, tidal flats and wetlands. Beyond the shore, you may see harbor seals, sea otters and Dall’s porpoises, which often are mistaken for killer whales because of a similar dark dorsal fin. Steller sea lions, which can weigh more than 2,000 pounds, are seasonal visitors. Minke whales also frequent these waters. Along the shoreline, falcons hunt mice and voles. In coastal forests, ravens try to snag food from eagles. Black-tailed deer are ubiquitous throughout the islands, even strolling boldly through neighborhoods while foraging. They’re cute, but don’t feed them. Remember the adage, “a fed animal is a dead animal.� On San Juan, foxes hunt and play on the American Camp prairie. Federal, state and local laws protect wildlife in the San Juan Islands. Do not chase, touch or disturb animals in their natural habitat. Stay on trails.
