PRE SIDE N T FROM the

Nic h o l as F i ts em o n s There’s nothing better than walking through the grocery store and hearing “Hey Pizza Guy” to turn around and see a friendly face. I may not always remember their name but if I don’t, I remember their favorite pizza. The funny part is I know their secret. The reason they call me “Pizza Guy” is because they don’t remember my name either. Just a few weeks ago one of my more regular customers and I were talking and I mentioned my last name. They were surprised because they had never heard it before. I responded, “It’s not that you have never heard it, it’s that you just know me as “Nick - The Pizza Guy”. Now it has moved on to my wife and kids. All four of my children have classmates that know their parents own the Pizza Factory. And my wife, puts her hand in everything she can around town to make sure we support everything she has time for, (and some we don’t). The point is, we love this town and everything about it. My wife, Maria, and I bought the Pizza Factory just over

to say I enjoy taking my children to. And now we have this passenger ferry, which is going to give us another opportunity to bring new people to our wonderful little town. I know times are tough but I feel we have been a strong community through it so far and believe that we have the kind of people to push us to the better times ahead.

three years ago. Before that, I was fortunate enough to work at Kingston Lumber for Tom Waggoner. He showed me the importance of keeping this community growing together and the endless possibilities we could gain from it. In fact, if it wasn’t for him I don’t think I would have taken the chance of being a business owner. It makes me smile when he talks about me because he usually mentions that I got my start working for him and I hope he takes pride in that fact. As I said, he taught me about the endless possibilities of our community. I accepted the nomination as President for the 2011 Chamber Board because I hope to be here to watch as this wonderful town of ours fights through these uncertain times only to come out better in the end.

My plans as President are to first, use the Committees that have been formed in recent years as foundation blocks to finding resources with which to keep drawing people in to the Kingston area. Second, I hope to expand the Chamber’s abilities to help visitors find more reasons to return to our area and in some cases, even stay. Telling friends and family about the wonderful place that captured there souls, just as it did mine eight years ago. And third, I hope to leave my mark. To be honest, I’m not sure how just yet, but I hope to find my niche, my reason for being here. Something that will leave you all better in some way. I don’t think I have all the answers but I am willing to look for them. I look forward to this opportunity.

In these times of unstable job markets, growing concerns of health care costs, and inflating prices, we, as a community, have raised money for light on out football field. We have built and are sustaining a beautiful park right down town that I am proud

k i n g sto n Welcome to Kingston, Washington, nestled in the northeast corner of the Kitsap Peninsula. The Kingston ferry docks receive 4 million visitors and commuters every year, from across the Puget Sound and around the world. Roads through town lead on to the rest of the peninsula and on to the Olympics. The population in the Kingston area, of about 8,000 people, is made up of young families, professionals who work locally or commute, and retirees who have come to be closer to family, or, who have homesteaded here from the early 1900s. In North Kitsap you can find everything you need to survive, and many opportunities to be adventurous. Local shopping provides everything from burgers to soap, paddle boards to bikes, and quilts to kayaks. Experiencing North Kitsap can include anything from a tour of an historic lighthouse, hiking in the forests, tidal pooling at low tide or watching the process of roasting peanuts. The Kingston Visitors Center is just two blocks up from the ferry docks and is kept open 6 days a week with the help of a team of volunteers. We welcome upwards of 3,000 visitors to the center every year from all over the world. In addition to providing maps and information, we sell souvenirs, fishing

licenses and tickets to local venues and events. Teams of volunteers gather to create flower baskets, which they then water in the summer, and boughs of greenery, and candy-cane wrapped light poles at Christmastime. Finding an excuse to stick around overnight is easy in Kingston. The Arts and Crafts Festival in July takes three days to show off the talents of artisans from near and far. The weekend begins with an art auction and reception. Food vendors keep you happy, while you visit the car show and enjoy musical entertainment. Farmers Markets take place in all local towns during the summer season. Supporting our local farmers and suppliers keeps the local economy moving. If spending Saturday night, in July and August you’ll find a free concert at the Kingston Marina. Bring your own chair, take out dinner from one of our local eating establishments, and be moved by the talents of jazz, rock, folk and popular performers. Remember to bring the kids and the dog. Beginning really early on a Saturday morning in August, everyone comes to Kingston to hunt for slugs. You need a license to hunt for

these hand-made pieces of ceramic art who’ve been hidden in shops, under logs, in bushes and on trails all over town. Like any town, the Chamber website, www.KingstonChamber.com is the first site sought after by travelers for information on events, amenities and other valuable local information. Our website is updated everyday. Our relationship with the KPVCB (www.VisitKitsap.com) allows for a link to our site from theirs. We tell the community about our area in the pages of the Monthly Newsletter, published through the Kingston Community News to almost 10,000 homes and businesses every month. In addition, we have a quickly growing listserv of addresses to which we send two emails each week with event and business information. The Chamber has joined forces with Dr. Tom Lamar and launched the Chamber and event news onto the airways through KITZ 1400 AM Radio on weekday mornings at 10:30. The spot is also available on our website and blasted to our listeners through the e-news bulletins. Our Facebook page GREATER KINGSTON COMMUNITY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE has almost 500 fans – why don’t you become our newest?

P o rt Ga m b le Port Gamble is a slice of New England in Kitsap County and being there is like stepping back into Washington’s territorial days. Built in a style similar to the East Coast towns those were home to the town’s founders, Andrew J. Pope & William C. Talbot. Port Gamble was named in 1841 by surveyor Charles Wilkes in honor of Lt. Robert Gamble, who was wounded in the War of 1812 sea battle between the US Frigate President and the British Belvidere. Port Gamble was briefly known in its formative days of 1853 as Teekalet, Indian for “brightness of the noonday sun.” The Schooner Julius Pringle set sail for the Puget Sound in June of 1853. She was commanded by Capt. W.C. Talbot, and Cyrus Walker, a 22-year-old former school teacher and surveyor when he first met Capt. Talbot. Walker’s name was to be associated with Puget Mill activities for more than sixty years. Capt. Talbot and a party set out in a canoe to explore a more favorable location. They landed in Port Ludlow, but William Sayward had reached there first, so they sailed on to Port Gamble. They built a shanty for lodging, a cookhouse for a store, and then started on the foundation of the mill. On September 5, 1853, the Schooner “L.P. Foster,” under command of Capt. J.P. Keller, arrived from Boston bringing boilers, engine, merchandise, supplies, and mill machinery.

The next year newer equipment for the mill arrived creating two operations. In 1858, the Puget Mill Sawmill at Port Gamble was surveyed and building lots were laid out for individual family homes. In 1870 the population at Port Gamble was 326 with 40 students enrolled in school. The first Masonic Temple in Washington Territory was formed and two years later the building was completed, which still stands today. In 1875 the Puget Mill Company was the largest holder of timberlands in the Washington Territory. In 1877 the Puget Mill Company bought the Utsalady mill on Camano Island and in 1878 the Puget Mill Company bought the prosperous mill at Port Ludlow and now owned the “ideal” location. Between 1878 and 1881 both Andrew J. Pope and William C. Talbot died. The Puget Mill Company at the time owned four saw-mills, four tugs, 150,000 acres of timberland, 14 cargo/lumber ships and lands in Maine, San Francisco, Oregon and the Washington Territory, and shipments of lumber went all over the world. Cyrus Walker managed everything, but never forgot where he began. “Port Gamble is my life,” he said. Port Gamble is set along the scenic shores of Hood Canal and Gamble Bay, a mile east of the floating bridge on Highway 104, or eight miles west of the Kingston Ferry terminal. Port

Gamble is a privately owned National Historic Landmark District and is the jewel on the Kitsap Peninsula. The 120-acre site was founded in 1853 by Puget Mill Company (later named Pope & Talbot) as a home for mill workers and their families and was one of the premier mill towns in Puget Sound. It was the oldest continuously operating mill towns in North America before it closed in 1995 after 142 years. The town is a popular day trip, wedding destination, and meeting and event venue. It is also a great destination for residents of neighboring Jefferson, Mason, Pierce, King and Snohomish counties, especially during the summer when events (both large and small) take place almost every weekend, from a Medieval Faire to a Civil War re-enactment. Other events include Old Mill Days and Logging Show, Ghost Walks, Maritime Music Festival, Historic Walking tours, the annual Fruitcake Contest and an old-fashioned Country Christmas, which help the town draw visitors’ year around. Boutiques offer local and regional fine arts, hand crafted gifts from around the world, restaurant, books, espresso, fiber arts and weaving, spa treatments, high tea, BBQ, kayak rentals, organic fruit stand, fabric and quilts and of course the feel of an old general store.

The New England style town features turn-of-the-century buildings, a historic church, picturesque grounds and a historic museum filled with artifacts and replicas from the town’s mill days. Elms and Maples line the town’s street – painting the area with hues of gold, orange and red in the autumn. Port Gamble has retained its historic charm and character; and remains company owned, now by Pope Resources and managed by Olympic Property Group, a division of Pope Resources. Olympic Property Group, besides re-visioning the town, is taking the lead on a trail network. It is called “The String of Pearls” and will be connecting trails in and around Port Gamble and other properties the company owns with similar trails joining North Kitsap communities. With the help of a huge team of representatives and volunteers from the community and recreation members throughout the county, it is no doubt the String of Pearls will become another North Kitsap gem. For more information on the lovely and unique town of Port Gamble, visit their Web site at www.portgamble.com.

H A N SV I LL E Located at the northernmost tip of the Kitsap Peninsula is the town of Hansville, Washington. Just ten miles from Kingston, Hansville is home to the Point No Point Lighthouse, a Nature Conservancy Reserve, three county parks and an extensive forest and beach trail system. Originally, the area was referred to as Point No Point. In 1841 Commander Charles Wilkes of the US Exploring Expedition came upon a sandy spit, thinking it a point of land. Upon closer inspection, the spit was much smaller than it looked and there was no “point” to speak of. He named it Point No Point. The S’Klallam Tribe called the spit of land Hahdskus, translating to “Long Nose”. As Seattle and Tacoma grew and marine traffic increased, so did the occurrence of marine calamities, making it necessary to construct light stations along Admiralty Inlet and Puget Sound. In 1879 construction was begun on the Point No Point Lighthouse and on January 1, 1880 it officially went into service. However, the lens for the light hadn’t yet arrived so the first light keeper, Mr. J.S. Maggs, hung a kerosene lantern in the tower and lit the way for ships until the lens arrived. About the same time, the area started to see the arrival of settlers, mostly Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish immigrants. Upon their arrival they began fishing, farming and logging. Two such settlers were Norwegians Hans Zachariasen and Anton Husby. Hans

and Anton were fishermen and would catch herring and sell it as bait to the commercial fishermen heading out to the fishing grounds in the Strait and beyond. They also ran a ferry service with their boats, from the steamers off shore to the beach, there being no dock built yet. As legend has it, Anton was a temperate man who would refuse to ferry anyone who had been imbibing. Upon learning that, one Scandinavian man remarked to his friend “Vell, how vill dey get ashore if Anton von’t ferry dem? “ “Oh don’t vorry”, said the friend, “If Anton von’t, Hans vill.” And thus the town is called Hansville. In the late 1920s and early1930s people began to buy land on the waterfront and build summer cabins and fi shing resorts. Point No Point was a premier salmon fishing destination with as many as seven resorts at one time lining the beach. Vestiges of long docks and rails to the water still can be seen at low tide. Today, Hansville’s population of more than 2,000 consists of descendants of those early farmers, fishermen, loggers and resort owners, in addition to a diverse population of community-minded residents committed to keeping Hansville a beautiful place to live, work and play. Although the small town only consists of a general store, post office, church, and a few small businesses, there are several guest

houses in the area, as well as many public parks with water access. Point No Point County Park is home to a historic lighthouse, offering tours April through September, as well as the US Lighthouse Society. The park contains a large wildlife refuge with many opportunities to picnic, hike, fish, or watch birds, sea animals & busy shipping lanes. Point No Point Resort, a block west of the County Park, is owned by the Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, and available for overnight camping. Reservations are necessary through the caretaker. Located in town, next to the general store is Norwegian Point Park, named for those who settled the area. A historic resort from the 30’s, plans are underway to place some of the quaint old buildings on the National Historic Registry. A couple of miles through town on Twin Spits Road, one finds a real gem, the Foulweather Bluff Nature Conservancy. From the trail head on the south side of the road, it’s an easy, short walk through the woods to a beautiful sandy cove bordered by a marsh area. Here, one may spot sea anemones, sand dollars, crabs, porpoise, river otter, osprey, heron and bald eagles. Sorry, no dogs allowed on this walk. A little south of town, Buck Lake Road winds west up to Buck Lake County Park, a popular swimming and picnicking spot. Look for the new Native Plants Garden on the walk from

the parking lot to the Hansville Greenway & Wildlife Corridor, which trail head is located at the far corner of the ball field. The Greenway, a vast trail system through a 300-acre nature preserve connecting Puget Sound to the Hood Canal, winds through open meadows and dense forests, past beaver dams, bear and coyote habitat, on to an old logging railway, with unique glimpses into an industry past. The citizens of Hansville are very proactive in their approach to development, as well as community activities, and take pride in maintaining a rural atmosphere with an abundance of natural riches. Please enjoy your visit, and be considerate of the speed limits!

s u q ua m is h Suquamish, a community located within Kitsap County on the Port Madison Indian Reservation just a few miles south of Kingston, is home to the Suquamish tribe, a sovereign nation. The name Suquamish originated from the tribe’s winter village site called “d’suq’wub,” which means “place of clear water.” Suquamish is easily reached via good roads and is near the Bainbridge Island ferry and Kingston ferry docks. In the past Suquamish was a vacation get-away with small weekend fishing cabins along the waterfront. Today, the community is composed of privately owned property and tribal trust property. Chief Sealth, a powerful Native American leader of the northwest, is buried at the Suquamish Memorial Cemetery. The City of Seattle takes its name from Chief Sealth. Sealth, a great orator and peacekeeper, was instrumental in preserving the culture of the Suquamish people during the treaty negotiations in the 1850s. To communicate the tribe’s concern regarding the relationship between its people and the earth, Chief Sealth spoke these famous words during the treaty accords: “Every part of this country is sacred to my people. Every hillside, every valley, every

plain and grove has been hallowed by some fond memory or some sad experience of my Tribe. Even the rocks, which seem to lie dumb as they swelter in the sun along the silent shore in solemn grandeur thrill with memories of past events connected with the fate of my people, the very dust under your feet responds more lovingly to our footsteps than to yours, because it is the ashes of our ancestors, and our bare feet are conscious of the sympathetic touch, for the soil is rich with the life of our kindred.” This historic speech, additional history, and exhibits of Suquamish, the Suquamish Tribe, and the Port Madison Indian Reservation can be found at the Suquamish Museum, on Sandy Hook Road. The community of Suquamish in the center of which stands their new Long House, is home to some of Kitsap Peninsula’s most eye-catching views. The area looks across Puget Sound to the City of Seattle, the Cascade Mountain range, and south to Mt. Rainier. Nearby, tourists can visit Grover’s Creek Fish Hatchery, the Suquamish Museum, Old Man House Park, and the gravesite of Chief Sealth. In these times, the Suquamish Tribe features the Suquamish Clearwater Casino, with “Vegas-style gaming, world-class

18

entertainment.” The casino includes three dining options and hosts a waterfront resort. A free shuttle operates between the casino and the ferry docks at Kingston and Bainbridge. Today, the community of Suquamish continues its respect for the land, waters, natural resources and genuine understanding of the relationships among these systems. The Suquamish Museum ( HYPERLINK “http:// www.suquamish.nsn.us/” www.suquamish. nsn.us/ museum) is a substantial resource for further information about Suquamish. 2009 was a big year for the Suquamish community, as the town hosted the Tribal Canoe Journey in July to celebrate the 20th anniversary of a one-day pull, which occurred from Suquamish to Seattle to celebrate Washington State’s Centennial Year. Since 1993, when the Bella Bella people challenged the Canoe Nations to paddle to their shores, the Canoe Journey has been an annual event with stops all along the coast. Last year, the nations ended their journey in Suquamish with celebrations of food and dance, music and sharing between tribes. Port Gam b le S’Kl all am The Port Gamble S’Klallam Reservation is located on the northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State. It is adjacent to Port Gamble Bay, one of the most stunning scenic waterways in the area that has, for generations, provided a cultural outlet and sustenance to the Port Gamble S’Klallam people. Even today, many of the Tribe’s over 1,150 members depend on the Bay either for personal use or commercial fishing and shellfishing.

recognizes the need for immediate action to make sure it remains vital for future generations.

Originally known as the Nux Sklai Yem or the Strong People, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe are descendants of the Salish people who have been well established in the Puget Sound basin and surrounding areas since 2400 B.C. The Tribe’s original ancestral village was situated at what is known today as the town of Port Gamble, which is across Port Gamble Bay from their current home of Point Julia. They were asked to relocate in the early 1900s after the opening of a sawmill at the Port Gamble townsite.

The Port Gamble S’Klallam Reservation is known for its stunning wooded vistas and tranquil, picturesque water views. While in Kitsap County, spend some time walking the beaches of Port Gamble Bay or visit the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe’s carving center, which is located across from the Longhouse and government center on Little Boston Road. The carving center offers for sale traditional tribal art crafted by master carvers.

Today, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is dedicated to maintaining their way of life, in part, by being a steward for the environment. Their main focus has been Port Gamble Bay, which was been harmed by decades of pollution stemming from timber production. While the Bay is resilient and one of the last waterways of its kind open to shellfish harvesting in the Puget Sound, the Tribe

They have worked tirelessly with local, state, and private organizations to assemble a plan to cleanup and restore Port Gamble Bay. This has included acting as a watchdog against development and other projects that may affect the Bay’s long-term health.

Up the road from the Gliding Eagle Marketplace is The Point Casino. This recently renovated facility features over 550 gaming machines, an expansive buffet, lounge, a nonsmoking gaming experience and Vegas-style gaming tables.

Philanthropy The Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for tribal members while increasing the community’s understanding of the Tribe’s rich cultural heritage. Past projects have involved a successful capital campaign for the House of Knowledge, which included the first Tribal Longhouse in over 100 years as well as an Elders Center and a new home for the Little Boston Library. Current focused goals include scholarship funding for Tribal members, publication of a Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe history book, and a matching funds capital campaign for the construction of a new facility for early childhood education. Outside the efforts of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation, the Tribe also awards non-profit and community organizations up to $2500 in grants twice a year.
