Artist: I have Curtis James at Anchor Tattoo in Seattle to thank for my first tattoo, my mon (Japanese family crest), on my hip. Joel Kennedy at Under the Needle Tattoo in Seattle did my Red-Crowned Crane, a symbol of peace and a sacred animal to Japanese people, on my left side/ribs. Joel is “the family tattoo artist.”

He did my dad’s sleeve tattoos and my mom’s back piece.

Why tattooed professionals? As an Asian American who strived to excel in college and would rather be in bed by 11 p.m. instead of partying, I’ve noticed how surprised people are when they find out that I have (and love) tattoos.

Our cover story isn’t meant to glorify body art or encourage people to get tattooed (I myself have to think on a design for a year before I feel ready to take the plunge on a new piece).

It’s more about how times are changing: Tattoos are becoming more mainstream and accepted and, as a result, they’ve become important to people from all walks of life – even those you may not expect.

We hear so much about Bellevue’s diversity, but diversity is far more than race or religion. It’s also about point of view, passions, age, occupation you name it. Our cover story gives voice to yet another Eastside lifestyle.

Where the sources come from: I called Bellevue tattoo parlors, including Easy Choppers and Tattoos and Skin and Soul, asking if they had any clients who fit the demographic I was looking for. I ended up interviewing seven people ranging in age from 23 to 55: almost all were moms and dads; some worked at Microsoft, law offices, hospitals and corporations. All of them were proudly tattooed.

What my ink means: Tattoos, scarification and other forms of body modification have been a part of different cultures for centuries; take ancient Egyptians or Maori people, for example. Being someone who loves tradition, I find that inspiring. I’ve always seen tattoos as more of a tradition than a fad, especially considering my parents.

My tattoos celebrate my family, history and heritage – in my opinion, those things never go out of style.

PHOTOS BY CHAD COLEMAN If you want to cook like Bellevue chef Salvatore Lembo, it’s going to take more than simply fresh ingredients and a tested recipe.

It takes heart – the ability to improvise and experiment, to listen to one’s best judgment. The food should speak to the chef. It’s heart, passion and an unparalleled dedication to taking care of his customers that have made Lembo’s two restaurants: Firenze Ristorante and Pizzeria Guido right next to one another at Crossroads mall such a success. In fact, Firenze has been a neighborhood favorite for just under 20 years.

When Lembo describes how to make Leg of Lamb, a traditional food his mother used to make for Easter or Christmas in Italy, he doesn’t get out cookbooks or look up information, he recites from memory. We’ve done our best below to translate his innate expertise into a recipe for everyone else to enjoy.

Leg of Lamb:

Traditionally a holiday dish, Leg of Lamb is a treat year-round. It makes a delectable dish for its flavor and tenderness, and is an impressive centerpiece and crowd-pleaser.

Shopping:

Whenever Lembo’s customers ask him where they can find authentic Italian ingredients, he always has one response: DeLaurenti at Pike Place Market.

You can’t beat the Seattle speciality food and wine retailer when it comes to quality, he says. It’s located at 1435 1st Ave. Lembo also likes to shop at the Metropolitan Market (10611 N.E. 68th St., Kirkland) and Whole Foods Market (888 116th Ave. N.E., Bellevue).

Recipe:

Yield: Serves 4-5 Prep time: 10 minutes Total time: About 2 hours

Ingredients:

4-5 lb Leg of Lamb White Wine, Pinot Grigio (to taste) 10 garlic cloves 3/4 c. olive oil 1 Tsp Kosher Salt (or to taste) T Tsp Rosemary (or to taste) Freshly ground black pepper – to taste Freshly-grated Parmesan

Small Red Potatoes, cut in quarters Red Onions, cut in half

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Brush the leg with olive oil, salt and pepper. Using a knife, cut small holes into the meat; fill with Parmesan.

2. Place lamb, potatoes and onions on a rack set on a roasting pan; When the meat is almost fully-cooked, splash a little white wine on it. Bake for a total of 1 hour and 40 minutes to 2 hours.

3. Transfer lamb to a platter. Serve.

Side dishes:

Try an Arugula salad with Extra-Virgin Olive Oil, Balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper.

Wine Pairings:

Lembo recommends Brunello di Montalcino and Castello Banfi (If you dine at his restaurant, you can try the wine he makes at his own vineyards in Tuscany).

The summer festival that’s making Bellevue a music destination

I

magine the festivities in Bellevue. The streets downtown are packed with people who’ve planned road trips, bought plane tickets and made hotel reservations to be here. Local bars and restaurants bustle with patrons as the sustained, sensuous notes of a saxophone wind through the summery air.

Thanks to the Bellevue Jazz Festival, this becomes the reality each June – a reality that boosts the local economy and continues to solidify the city as an arts destination. This year, it’s all happening June 1-5.

The festival includes performances at various downtown restaurants, bars and the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center.

It’s had an off-the-charts impact on local businesses, says Steve Walker, director of sales and marketing at Grand Cru Wine Shop and Mixologie Lounge on 108th Avenue Northeast.

Grand Cru is one of many festival venues.

“These are our biggest days of the year,” Walker says. “We’re huge fans of the festival and what it’s doing for Bellevue.”

Originally a Bellevue Community College event, the festival sprang up in 1978 and ran until 1993. The Bellevue Downtown Association resurrected it in 2008. Today, the festival offers a blend of ticketed and free performances by top national and regional jazz musicians, as well as high-school students from the Rising Stars program; talented youth audition for the chance to perform in one of several small ensembles and receive coaching from a professional musician.

This year, out of the 40 students who auditioned, half were selected, the majority of whom are from the Eastside.

Instruments the young musicians play include drums, piano, bass, trumpet, guitar and trombone.

From seasoned pianist to Rising Star participant, BDA President and festival Executive Director Leslie Lloyd says this year is “another powerhouse lineup.” The BDA collaborated with Earshot Jazz Executive Director John Gilbreath to pick the artists, who include MacArthur fellow Regina Carter. She’ll be performing African folk-tune inspired songs from her latest release, “Reverse Thread.”

While jazz is an American art form, it has a universal appeal to it, Lloyd says. In an international sense, it has a strong connection to African and Latin music, and it also connects people of all ages. Many adults have grown up listening to jazz, while young people today get involved with the music through high school programs.

The greater-Seattle area is a hotbed for jazz education, including the programs at Roosevelt, Nathan Hale, Interlake and Newport high schools.

Eisenhauer says they didn’t want to merely create another youth competition.

“We really wanted to acknowledge and respect the local jazz talent – the next tier of jazz greats,” he says.

The festival’s inclusion of up-and-coming artists coincides with the city’s own growth as an up-andcoming center for music and the arts, says Lloyd, who pointed out that there aren’t enough venues for live music in the city – especially with the opening of the Tateuchi performing arts center a few years away.

Still, Bellevue music events including the jazz festival and Wintergrass, the February bluegrass showcase, will help the city get there eventually.

Lloyd hopes Bellevue’s jazz festival will one day become as big-time as the nationally-renowned San Francisco affair, SFJAZZ. “We want to continue to grow. We need to grow. We need the performing arts here,” she says.

Northwest Wine : Idaho’s Snake River Valley coming into its own

et’s get this out of the way: No potato wine is made in Idaho. The Gem State is famous for its potatoes, but thanks to the increasing quality of Idaho vintners, Idaho’s wine industry is growing in stature and size.

Just three years ago, Idaho had 32 wineries. That has grown to 43, and

inquiries about starting wineries come to the Idaho Wine Commission in Boise on a weekly basis. Most of the wineries are in the Snake River Valley, primarily around Caldwell and Nampa. A few are in the panhandle, and the Palouse region promises to be a growth area.

Idaho. The largest vineyard, Skyline, is 450 acres and owned by Precept Wines in Seattle.

Idaho’s oldest and largest winery is Ste. Chapelle in Caldwell, which started in 1976 and is owned by Ascentia Wine Estates in California. Thanks to Ste. Chapelle, Riesling is the state’s largest variety, though Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot also are important. Moya Shatz, executive director of the Idaho Wine Commission, said Rhone varieties such as Syrah and Viognier grow extremely well in the Snake River Valley.

“I think that’s what we’ll be known for eventually,” she said.

The Snake River Valley is high mountain desert, with elevations between 1,500 and 3,300 feet above sea level, much higher than other West Coast regions. This gives Idaho a distinct advantage, as warmer days and cooler nights help retain grapes’ important natural acidity and give resulting wines better balance. Shatz pointed out that while Idaho’s growing season is a little shorter than Washington’s, the Snake River Valley has few issues getting grapes ripe.

Here are a few Snake River Valley wines we have tasted recently: Ste. Chapelle 2009 Winemaker’s Series Dry Gewurztraminer, Snake River Valley, $9: There’s a big hit of orange oil in the nose with grapefruit, gooseberry and lime peel along with minerality and petrol. As a drink, it’s bone-dry and very refreshing.

Fraser Vineyard 2009 Malbec, Snake River Valley, $25: Our 2011 Idaho Winery of the Year won a gold with this at the state competition, and it’s plain to see why. The nose features raspberry, cherries, chocolate and lime zest. The theme of raspberry and

cherry continues with the drink. Black pepper, not tannin, is the focus of the finish.

Indian Creek Winery 2008 Pinot Noir, Snake River Valley, $15: This rare Idaho Pinot Noir offers aromas of violets, strawberries and Rainier cherries, followed by flavors of cranberries and red plums. It opens with bright elegant fruit that gives way to a rich midpalate and finish.

3 Horse Ranch Vineyard 2008 Reserve Syrah, Snake River Valley, $19: Greg Koenig’s winemaking talents and Gary Cunningham’s organic vineyard are proving to be a delicious partnership. Toasted oak aromas are akin to a fresh-baked brownie and readily joined by blackberry, black cherry, black raspberry and leather. Skill shows on the palate with a smooth entry of soft fruit, vibrant acidity and a nice hit of sweet chocolate before the arrival of tannin.

Cinder Wines 2008 Syrah, Snake River Valley, $27: This succulent Syrah creates a mood of black cherry, plums, cinnamon and bacon. Its acidity is reminiscent of blueberries, and there’s a sweet farewell that reminded us of Milk Duds.

Pend d’Oreille Winery 2007 Wood River Vineyard Malbec, Snake River Valley, $28: This shows off aromas and flavors cassis, cranberry and plums, backed by minerality, allspice and acidity that override the tannin.

Vale Wine Co. 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Snake River Valley, $20: Skyline Vineyard near Caldwell, Idaho, and winemaker John Danielson worked together for a dark and lingering drink of cassis, cola, alder-smoked bacon, sarsaparilla and crushed leaf.

women is already well in the works. People of all ages enjoy the art, personal meaning and even ancestral or family markings that tattooing provides.

Look around, society has changed. Welcome to a new cultural landscape, where inked skin is not an indicator of socioeconomic status, education or race. The line between the mainstream and the alternative is becoming blurrier every day.

ehind a desk at a First Horizon Home Loan Corp. office on Lake Washington Boulevard, underneath a long-sleeved button-down, Senior Vice President Allen Velasco kept a secret on his skin for two decades.

"When I was in the white-collar world, I was very aware of my tattoos," says Velasco, 39, who now runs Imperial CrossFit gym in Kent.

"I hid them because I wanted to be known as 'Allen, the guy who does really good work,' instead of 'Allen, the guy who has a lot of tattoos.'"

But more and more, it seems one doesn't have to choose between tattoos and a professional image.

In just a few generations, tattoos have gone from being the trademark of artsy-alternative types, goodfor-nothings and sailors to an edgy fad, especially among millennials, young adults eager for independence, identity and self-expression.

They're coming of age in a time where more young people are going to college than ever before (about 70 percent out of the roughly 3 million annual high school graduates) and where the celebrities they watch in movies and listen to on iTunes have tattoos (Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears, etc.).

As a result, the next generation of the American workforce, may not only be the most educated, but could also be one of the most tattooed.

It’s not too surprising that millennials would embrace this once-alternative art (aren’t young people notoriously known for being wild and rebellious?)

But people may not realize that the shift toward more marked-up doctors, lawyers and business men and

A positive addiction: When asked how many tattoos she has, Maxwell-Schwab has to count to remember. Is it 10 or 11? There’s four on her back, one on her wrist, a design encircling her thigh like a garter belt as well as tattoos on her big toe, ankle and lower abdomen. “Oh yeah, it’s 11,” she says.

Her first one: She was 22. It was the ‘90s and grunge was in. “I was obsessed with Orca whales at the time.” What started off as a single Orca on her ankle became a whole anklet design.

Tattoo sisters: Maxwell-Schwab and one of her closest girlfriends got tattooed together when they went on vacation to Australia, Las Vegas, Hawaii and Cancun. She says her tattoos capture moments she wants to remember.

A portrait of the last 20 years: “My tattoos are my artistic expression and my individuality. They make me different.”

Carrying peace with her: “Three years ago, I was going through a really tough time, I wanted to feel like I had peace around me. I have the word serenity on one shoulder blade and peace and eternal love on the other. I carry the two things with me now.”

Law office: Maxwell-Schwab’s 74-year-old boss loves her tattoos. “When he introduces me, he says, ‘This is my paralegal, Leah. She’s got a lot of tattoos.’ He thinks it’s pretty cool.”

Identity: “My work isn’t who I am, my tattoos are who I am,” she says.

“People think you’re up to no good or you don’t have a good upbringing,” he says.

Mark Burker, 33 Profession: Emergency physician, Tacoma Emergency Care Physicians. “I treat everything from hangnails to heart attacks.”

Ink: Among other things, the Woodinville native has a caduceus medical symbol on his back and a Dia De Los Muertos (Mexican Day of the Dead) skull design on his arm. “It’s a celebration of death and those who have come before me,” says Burker, who sees multiple fatalities every day. “I think it’s an interesting comment on my job.”

ER Culture: “I think it’s becoming more and more typical for people to have tattoos in the emergency room. We’re people who work hard and play hard.

Typically, family doctors will have tattoos concealed by their scrubs, but in the ER, I see anywhere from 12 patients on a slow shift to up to 24 patients. you get a new patient all the time. There’s less of a tattoo stigma.”

A passion for body art: “I like having something artful and beautiful on me.”

What do “tattooed” people look like? “Now, it’s everyone from bankers to bookies. I’m a physician, I wear glasses.”

A story of sports: From the number he wore as a member of Bellevue High School football team, and later a scholarship athlete at the University of Washington, Hasty’s tattoos reflect growing up in Bellevue and Seattle and being an athlete. The waves of the Puget Sound and different sayings such as “Fortune favors the brave,” are inked on his upper body.

Misconceptions: While tattoos are more acceptable among jocks, Hasty says he’s still gotten negative comments about his tattoos from family friends.

Bellevue’s transformation: “Seattle is so forgiving, so creative and Bellevue is becoming that way, too,” Nielsen says. “There’s a cultural shift happening where tattoos are becoming more OK.” Getting inked: She asked her artist, Hooe, why he didn’t go to Seattle, a more alternative city, for work. He told her that Bellevue is an untapped market. She agreed. “People say, ‘I’m not going to Bellevue to get tattooed, it’s snooty and pretentious. That’s just ignorance.”

Maegan Nielsen, 35 Profession: Nielsen (whose full-back tattoo is pictured on page 9) has withheld her position and the name of the corporation she works for in Bellevue at the request of her employer.

Corporate culture: “Some corporate industries just tolerate tattoos while others really get it,” Nielsen says.

“As the baby boomers continue to retire and the up-andcoming workforce moves in, employers will be hiring from a younger crowd where it’s becoming increasingly more acceptable to be tattooed.”

Inspiration: In addition to her children’s astrological signs (she says she won’t get her husband’s until their 40th anniversary), Nielsen’s back tattoos are symbols that remind her of her own perseverance and resilience through the hardship she’s endured, including the word “strength” in Chinese and a phoenix design that will eventually take up her entire back (“It rises from literally nothing to become a beautiful, powerful bird.”)

Stereotypes about tattoos: “They’re only for people in prison or with an artistic lifestyle,” says Nielsen, who works with senior members of her company and never

Mother-son bonding: “It hurt,” Anita says. “But I trust [Kevin] and he just laughed. ‘Sorry mom.’”

Used to be against tattoos: “When my daughter came home with a tattoo I about hit the roof,” Anita says. “Even though it was just a little musical note on the inside of her ankle, maybe an inch tall.”

What changed?: Anita’s son Kevin loved to draw, a talent that would later lend to his attraction to tattooing. It was Kevin’s interest and love of ink that eventually changed Anita’s mind in 2004, when she got her first tattoo, a kokopelli, which is a Native American fertility deity on her right shoulder.

A diverse collection: There’s no theme or deeper meaning – Anita’s tattoos are simply some of her favorite things: kokopellis, hummingbirds and roses (she grows 20 different types of the flower in her garden). Maybe I go against the grain,” she says. “I don’t try and hide them.

I wear sleeveless shirts in the summertime. It is what it is.”

Unprofessional?: “People see me walking down the street and I don’t look like someone who would be tattooed. I’m a mom, I’m a professional, a square, a goody-two-shoes. In my opinion, perceptions are changing,” says Anita, who works in a law office with four litigation attorneys, some of whom are tattooed.

Microsoft: “It’s a real mixed bag, you have everyone from people in traditional Indian garb to very [Christian] Caucasian people,” says Cook, who enjoyed people’s reaction and attention to his legs as he continued to get them worked on. “Shorts and a T-shirt is not uncommon attire at Microsoft, especially for people who don’t work in sales.”

Reactions: Only positive. Most people ask Cook where he got his work done or tell him they like his ink.

Defining who gets tattooed: “Some people seem like they’re uptight, but then you find out they’re hiding a tattoo,” he says.

The location of his ink: While Cook chose his legs because they were less visible and easy to cover with slacks at the office, he says he’s wanting visible tattoos more and more. “I want to be more out of the closet as a tattooed person,” Cook says. “It’s a conversation starter and I really enjoy talking to people.”

Conversation: “The other day I was talking with a cashier, a high-school age black girl who had a tattoo on her arm. She noticed my neck tattoo (a Vietnamese, double kanji design) and we had a very nice conversation for two minutes. We were of two age and social groups who wouldn’t have normally spoken to one another.”

Design: Cook, who formerly worked at Microsoft, has leg tattoos that are a celebration of his family: his wife and teenage son and daughter. On his left leg, each member of his family got to pick the color of their Japanese koi fish, (“In my tattoo, the females have longer, daintier fins and the males have longer whiskers,” Cook says.) The design, currently stopping at his calf, will eventually go up to his thigh.

Why he wanted his ink: “Part of it is a mid-life crisis,” Cook says. “I was very quiet and withdrawn for so much of my life and now I’m celebrating coming into myself.”

Rocking out with Jesus Christ Superstar

Nontraditional approach puts fresh spin on biblical story | REVIEW

is loyal apostles had pink and blue hair, hoodies and Dr. Martens boots.

The ground beneath his feet was concrete; a freeway barrier lay amid the modern-day rubble, including a 14-foot tall barbed-wire fence. And from his holy lips emerged not hymns, but hardcore rock ‘n’ roll.

Village Theatre’s newest musical is a fresh take on an ancient story (the last seven days of Jesus’ life). The gutsy choices by director Brian Yorkey, a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner, plus multiracial and nontraditional casting make the show too innovative to ignore.

Two powerhouse men alternate Jesus/Judas each show: Los Angeles-based actor Michael K. Lee and Seattle rising talent Aaron Finley. Other standouts include an angelic portrayal of Mary Magdalene by Broadway/Village star Jennifer Paz, a hilariously flamboyant King Herod by Brandon Whitehead and a commanding Pontius Pilate by Greg Stone.

But it’s not just the talented cast who bring this edgy, raw production to life. The show includes an 11-piece band, complete with two guitars, two drummers and a bass trio.

From the very beginning, it’s clear that something epic is about to happen. The impressive, high-budget set, designed by Matthew Smucker, lays the scene for a warravaged fugitive camp. Search lights comb the audience. The noise of a helicopter can be heard overhead.

Then the action starts. Apostles emerge from the audience and aisles, mouths covered in bandanas, heads covered by sweatshirt hoods. They shinny up the 14 feet of wire, cut down the spiky, wire spirals at the top, and climb down the other side.

“We tried to focus on modern-day social issues that Jesus would care about if he were around today,” says Finley, explaining the rebellious nature of the apostles. Seattle’s WTO riots from the ’90s were used as an inspiration for the apostles’ passionate campaign and choice of dress. Similarly, the corporate-looking Pharisees have pristine white suits and yarmulkes, a long conference table and bottled water.

Perhaps one reason the production is effective, is that the nontraditional approach makes Jesus and the story of his crucifixion relatable and more of a universal story.

Christ is the son of God – but he’s also just a dude one might mistake for another rioter.

In this show, he gets angry, has some serious chemistry with Mary Magdalene, and while a celestial being, it’s his humanity that shows through until he’s hung on the cross.

Judas is not merely portrayed as the bad guy/betrayer, but as a man concerned for the seemingly dangerous behavior of his revolutionary friend. Finally, the apostles are freshfaced, if not rough-around-the-edges, idealists. They remember their savior at the Last Supper, not merely with wine and bread, but with hotdog buns, Doritos and beer.

Getting real weird with Dan Cummins

DC: No. What’s funny though, is that I’m really naked from the waist down to stay in character. I eventually started to try filming the series in public places for a while before realizing what a horrible idea that was. I was in this Kansas city mall and I went into the bathroom and picked a stall.

But then people started coming in to the restroom and all they’re hearing is a maniac ranting about Lindsay Lohan. My pants are down, I have a laptop on my lap, and I hadn’t even shut the door properly. So the next thing I know, these two little kids, 9 and 7, walk in on me and all I could think to say was, ‘Hey buddy.’ It was like a commercial for a sex offender.

Combining absurd, imaginative, yet somehow relatable topics with a laid-back delivery style, Dan Cummins is one of the most requested comics at colleges, performing at 110 schools from Maine to Washington during the 2007-08 school year alone. He’s also quickly becoming a headlining fixture on the club circuit, bringing in new fans to his live shows each time he makes another national TV appearance.

Cummins has appeared on “The Late, Late Show,” “Last Comic Standing: Season Six,” “Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham,” and “Comedy Central Presents Dan Cummins.”

scene: So you’re a Gonzaga grad? What did you think of your

scene: Describe your comedic style in one word.

DC: I went to Gonzaga from ’95 to ’99 and liked it, but I was always on the fence with it. It’s a hard enough business to break into alone, but living in Spokane made things almost impossible.

DC: That was a weekly online thing I used to do to help strengthen my comedic muscle. I would just find a couple headlines from the news, then record myself sitting on various toilets, like how people read the paper, and discuss them.

scene: You’ve released some well-loved comedy albums: “Crazy with a Capital F” and “Revenge is Near.” You’ve also appeared on numerous TV shows. What do you still have to accomplish?

DC: So much. I have a paranoia that if I stop improving my performance, the comedy world is just going to pass me by. For comedians, the blue-collar and urban niche has a built-in market. I don’t have a niche. My goal now is to just fill smaller theaters across the country with people who really want to see me, not just some headliner.

DC: Just daily life. For example, I recently had a hotel employee try and steal my credit card in Portland, Ore. He got fired for trying to do it. But he was the most easily-identifiable criminal, which struck me as funny.

Right from the time he checked me in, I knew he was a shady character. I got the alert when he tried to spend a couple thousand on bestbuy.com, then he tried to spend more money at local Portland businesses. He had these odd physical characteristics, like a “James Bond” villain: hunchbacked, shifty eyes, mumbly.

When the cops asked, ‘Can you describe this person?’

I said, ‘Oh my God, can I ever.’”

Dear Rose, With warm days arriving soon in the Northwest, what are you recommendations for wearing shorts? – Miss Sunshine Dear Miss Sunshine, At times I have often thought that it would be ideal if one were asked to show their birth certificate at the register when they were purchasing a pair of shorts, to avoid selling them to anyone over age 40 – or 38 inches around the hips. If you are not confident about your legs and the loveliness of your knees, I recommend not wearing them. In many cases, wearing long shorts are the most difficult kind of all to wear, and the ‘Boy Scout Look’ has never been considered elegant.

Very short shorts can be alluring, provided that you have lovely thighs which are neither too thin, too heavy, nor flabby; and provided that the shorts do not bare the lower part of the buttocks, and that they are narrow enough in the legs so as not to be indecent. In any case, you should always wear a snug, opaque seamless panty underneath, preferably the same color as the shorts.

Dear Rose, Is having dark tanned skin still fashionable? – Sun Goddess Dear Sun Goddess, We know that the medical community has confirmed that excess time spent in the sun without sunscreen is damaging and is not a healthy choice. The same is true for sun tanning beds. While a lightly suntanned complexion creates an agreeable impression of health, an overcooked epidermis is very aging. A beautiful young woman or man on the beach with bronzed skin is appealing, but returning from a vacation deeply tanned is no longer necessary to impress your friends who stayed home. There are many great lotions on the market today that will darken your skin naturally, without causing permanent skin damage. These are healthy alternatives to those who want a summer glow when wearing less clothing in the summer months.

Some other men’s dressing to always keep in mind: watch your socks when you sit down. If there’s a section of hairy leg showing between the top of your socks and the bottom of your trousers, you know that it is time to quickly go to the store and purchase some over-the-calf length socks (and you may need garters)! Holes in your socks are another downer. Combine

the holey socks with scuffed up shoes, and you are impacting your professional image. White dress socks are fine with an all-white summer suit; simply terrible with black or brown street shoes and a suit; even worse when worn with black street shoes and shorts. Dear Rose, What is the etiquette for wearing sandals in the corporate world and in casual settings? – Sockless in Bellevue Dear Sockless, The etiquette of when to wear sandals depends on: your age – young feet are much prettier in sandals that aged ones; the weather – bare legs, sunshine and or tropical climates and sandals go well together; the condition of your feet – no dry callused heels, no bunions or fungus, and a fresh pedicure is a must; the nature of your job – dress shoes always in a conservative work environment (a young male executive wearing big leather sandals or flip flops will surely look out of place). Stiletto-heeled sandals for women are sexy, but if a woman is focused on success in her career, she does not need to be held back by broken bones caused by wearing skyscraper heels. There are many shoes that are chic, modern and comfortable to choose from to complete your outfit. A lady should not wear strappy sandals or open toed shoes in a conservative work environment.

Dear Rose, If my body is not a perfect size 8, what items of clothing should I wear to camouflage my flaws and still look like a lady? – Wanting to be stylish Dear Stylish, Having a fabulous style is the one thing that every woman would love to possess.

If in doubt, loose fitting shift dresses, nicely fitted black pants, and ballet flats are always classic and timeless pieces to have in your wardrobe. It’s No Choke! I love Group Health!

wo things you should know about me; 1) I L-o-v-e Vietnamese noodle soup and 2) I LOVE Group Health Cooperative, even when they mash up to create one unforgettable night out.

My family understands my Pho obsession so they willingly submitted to a weekend dinner HEIJA NUNN at one of our local noodle stops. That same morning, 14-year-old Sweetie Boy’s orthodontist had cemented a junkyard worth of metal to his teeth in search of a jutting jaw line. We ordered the usual and soon we were customizing five bowls of steaming soup with various condiments. By the time the rest of us were staring at empty bowls, Sweetie Boy was still splashing his way through his meal. He held up a large, thinly sliced curtain of meat and whined that he was having trouble eating it. “Pull it apart with a fork!” “Just hurry up and eat it!” we said. Thirty seconds later, he was frozen in place, turning purple.

“Stand up!” I shrieked, and then performed the Heimlich maneuver. He coughed. Between unattractive and noisy bouts of retching, we whisked him away to the bathroom to spare the other diners. Within moments, we were joined by a group of Bellevue’s finest men in uniform. The fireman in charge assumed they would transport Sweetie Boy to Overlake

Hospital; he paused as if he misheard me when I directed them to Group Health. As a 30+ year member of Group Health Cooperative, I’ve gotten used to that reaction. In September, “My Attorney” had emergency gallbladder surgery. Part of his procedure was performed by a dapper, jovial surgeon at Overlake. During the pre-op consult, he marveled endlessly at the fact that an “Attorney from Medina belongs to Group Health?”

Considering he was about to stick pointy things down my husband’s throat, I smiled politely rather than sarcastically ask how it came to be that a surgeon of his exclusive caliber, found himself operating on said Group Health member.

I was confident and grateful to be around the corner from Group Health’s new Eastside facility. I am always surprised that not every provider offers a 24/7 Consulting Nurse, easy access to Urgent Care, same-day appointments, and onsite pharmacies. We have great doctors, my fave, now retired; OB/ GYN cared for me from my first pelvic exam, through three pregnancies. I share the smartest Primary Care Physician with “My Attorney” and my teens get their zits popped by the same guy who takes my middle-aged acne as a personal affront.

With Group Health’s electronic medical records and website, I can graph my personal data and email my doctor about “something I saw on the internet.” We love Group Health so much that when my husband’s firm eliminated it as a choice, we bought our own Group Health plan.

Sweetie Boy lived his toddler dream with his ambulance ride to Group Health E.R., where we waited patiently for his esophagus to let go of his dinner. When it was clear that

Sweetie Boy medication and time was not going to work, his “care team” decided to send us to Seattle’s Children’s Hospital where a pediatric gastroenterologist would perform a procedure requiring full intubation and general anesthesia. There, I was humbled and calmed by the strength of the families enduring far greater challenges. Sweetie Boy tried to look cool while spitting into a bag with every swallow, and as he pondered the I.V. attached to his hand he said “Mom, I feel pretty lucky. I know I am lucky to be here, to have health insurance and an ambulance that will respond in minutes.”

I don’t know if it was the rare moment of teenaged introspection that did it, or the Lucky magazine I was flipping through at the time, but a few minutes later I heard cheering in the hallway as Sweetie Boy avoided surgery by returning from the x-ray room with a hot steaming bag of noodle soup.
