ave and Cindy Frederick were already advocates for young, struggling youngsters before they came upon The Coffee Oasis. “My parents were looking for a space in Bremerton — where we lived — that we could care for the community at large,” says their son Daniel Frederick, now executive director of The Coffee Oasis. “But specifically [they sought to help] young adults who were homeless or hurting and needed help and knew that everybody feels comfortable when they walk into a coffee shop.” Since its opening in 1997, The Coffee Oasis has transformed into a space for youth to find hope. Because the Fredericks, who opened their home to children in foster care in the early 1990s, saw they had limited space in their household, they started searching for a new means to reach the struggling youth in their community. The Coffee Oasis had been on their mind as an outreach center throughout their search, Daniel Frederick recalls. Dave, his father, was a police chaplain who was once called onsite to help the family of a young man who

had taken his own life. “In his suicide note, he had talked about the Coffee Oasis,” Daniel Frederick recalls. “It was a place that he’d come and get connected to the community, but not a healthy community. see FREDERICK on page 26

numbers don’t lie. Locally owned businesses may be classified as “small,” but they have a big impact on the national economy. The U.S. Small Business Administration reports that from the third quarter of 2020 to the second quarter of 2021 small business employment was the highest since the recession with a total of 5.5 million jobs created, offsetting the 60 percent decline during the first two quarters of 2020. Furthermore, the 2021 Small Business Profiles show that the United States is now home to 32.5 million small businesses accounting for 46.8 percent of the private workforce. Supporting locally owned businesses is a great way to contribute to the community, but that’s not the only attraction. Here are several reasons to shop small.

The

THE FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Helping others has become a higher priority in society within the last few years. A November 2021 survey by Union Bank

found that consumers are now just as likely to shop in-person at small businesses as large retailers.

SHOP LOCAL from page 19 Roughly half of consumers are willing to spend up to $10 more on an item to support a small or local business, while about three in four plan to spend up to 50 percent of their budget with small businesses. This increase may be due to the positive feeling of supporting a fellow neighbor.

CREATE JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Shopping at small businesses allows establishments and staff to continue providing goods and services to their community. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses of 500 employees or

fewer make up 99.9 percent of all U.S. businesses and 99.7 percent of firms with paid employees. Sustaining local businesses provides a strong job market for the community. Unemployment can be abrupt, but with a stable stream of local opportunities rejoining the workforce is obtainable.

KEEP MORE MONEY IN THE COMMUNITY

Shopping with small businesses ensures that more of the money spent will stay in the community. Out of every $100 spent with a small business, $48 stays in the local economy, versus $14 for every $100 when spent with national retailers, according to the Small Business Administration.

National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization, but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small businesses also may be more inclined to work with local vendors and start-ups than national companies that have global supply chains. These are just a few of the many reasons to seek out small businesses when in need of products or services. 

LODGING from page 5 Collaboration with local attractions such as the Kids Discovery Museum allow the Bainbridge Lodging Association to create activity booklets at no cost to vacationers, as well as exclusive coupons to sweeten their stay. “We have coupons at Bainbridge Brewery [and] we have discounts for wine and BonBon fudge, which is kind of like the trademark candy on Bainbridge,” Addington says. “The property owners will receive these discount cards and pass them on to visitors to encourage them to go to different points across the island to do different things.” Association staff works with property partners to produce tour guides and area-focused itineraries for guests. These supplements detail where guests can reach by walking from the property and how to get there. The association has assembled itineraries for more than 20 years now, with an array of topics from hikes, wine tastings, family activities, dining, books and landmarks.

24

No matter the interest, Bainbridge lodging Association has an itinerary for it. “We love partnering with other businesses on the island and just promoting those points of interest,” Addington says. “We feel like the more actions that they have, the longer that they’ll stay.”

Last-minute lodging

Want to do something this weekend, but didn’t plan ahead? No problem! Last Minute Lodging has it covered. The association’s latest program — launched in October — allows renters to post listings available for sameday bookings and stays. Live in the moment with no hassle when planning a trip through Bainbridge Lodging Association or their affiliate, Visit Bainbridge Island. This program provides opportunities for property owners to fill vacancies, as well as diverse options with easy-to-use features for last minute vacationers. Lack of time and preparation are no longer barriers for memorable adventures. Last Minute Lodging is free to use through the end of the year.

SHOW THE LOVE: HOLIDAY GUIDE 2022

“It helps give lodging owners visibility and marketing that they otherwise wouldn’t have received and gives visitors at the last minute who are struggling a really easy way to figure out where to stay,” Addington says.

What’s to come

Within the next year, Bainbridge Lodging Association plans to focus more efforts on developing relationships within the tourism and island communities. The association, Addington notes, will work closely with organizations such as the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce and Bainbridge Island Humanities to avoid duplicating efforts across the island. “We’re going to really focus on education next year not just with the community and city of Bainbridge Island, but also back to our large lodging partners, which is the most important task we have,” she says. Seeking out educational opportunities is of the highest priority to ensure accurate and up to date information on marketing techniques for the organization and property owning partners. In addition, the Bainbridge Lodging

SHOW THE LOVE: HOLIDAY GUIDE 2022

Association is building programs to educate lodging providers on the latest safety measures and cleaning equipment to ensure guests receive the utmost care. Bringing in new properties is essential and Bainbridge Lodging Association wants to help make it happen by supplying owners looking to get into the market with resources and programs intended to guide them through the process toward success. “We want to focus on not just the guest experience but the community experience,” Addington says. “How can we work with the community to drive missions that are interesting for them and also promote the visitor experience.” Marketing programs for property owners are also on the horizon, she says, along with city-wide signs and banners relaying important and accessible information to visitors. Bainbridge Lodging Association is completely funded through the lodging tax on overnight stays. To show your support, book a dream vacation today! FREDERICK from page 9 “That was before that business had failed, so it had kind of been on our radar,” he says. “We saw it come up for sale; it was this idea of a place that had been a place of darkness or a place where people had experienced pain, could it be a place where people experienced hope.” With the perfect name to support their mission, the family decided to buy it. “An oasis is a place where animals that are thirsty come together,” Frederick says. “It’s a place where the tiger and the zebra somehow make this truce and they can be in the same place together. “And so, I do think for us it became a powerful imagery for what Coffee Oasis is. People of all shapes and sizes and stripes and backgrounds 26

— whatever it is — it’s a place for all people.” The family didn’t start out as coffee drinkers, Daniel says, but now they roast their own in-house coffee. “It was so small and we were figuring out so much. We weren’t coffee drinkers. My parents didn’t drink coffee before we bought Coffee Oasis,” he says. “The heart behind it really was that everybody feels comfortable when they walk in a coffee shop, but we have since grown a love for coffee.” Frederick began his work with The Coffee Oasis when he was 12 years old. He decided to work full time with his parent’s organization in 2008, a year after finishing college. “I think like everybody, I thought that I was going to do big exciting things somewhere else,” he says. “I always felt drawn back here, but it wasn’t SHOW THE LOVE: HOLIDAY GUIDE 2022

until the end of 2008 that I realized this really was the place for me.” The organization started small, but quickly grew with support from the community. Frederick recalls The Coffee Oasis grew from one location on Burwell Street, and just one service for youth on Friday nights (called Teen’s Night) in 2008 to five locations, two of them shelters, in Kitsap County and Tacoma. Some locations are open 24/7. “We’ve really seen in the last 15 years just a real amazing explosion of growth — and that has so much to do with the community seeing the good that’s being done and being a part of it,” Frederick says. The Coffee Oasis offers many services to help the youth in their community. With a focus on outreach, the organization strives to find struggling youth in the places they’re likely to be. “Our hope is to go where they are, where they’re hurting, and [to] be that SHOW THE LOVE: HOLIDAY GUIDE 2022

warm invitation,” Frederick says. “So many people might be out there for their harm, we’re out there for their good,” he says. SERVING UP SERVICES Drop-in centers are provided to give youth the opportunity to get off the streets and learn valuable life skills. Two shelters are available for housing in the Pierce and Kitsap areas. These shelters often see an influx of 20-25 people per night. Case management helps the youth gain confidence and self-esteem to rejoin school, find housing and have the courage to apply for jobs. The organization also provides job training with internships to ensure that everyone has skills to succeed in the workforce. see FREDERICK on page 28 27

we really do, but why the kids come day in and day out and even stay in the shelters is because they’ve met people that really care about them.” The Coffee Oasis is a space where teens feel like they can achieve their dreams thanks to the outpour of support and love from the staff and community, Frederick says. “I think that for us what success is defined as is the kids having the confidence to live again, to take

Daniel Frederick

The Coffee Oasis also offers 24/7 crisis services via text. This program allows struggling teens to talk with an understanding adult. “There are a lot of kids texting in who have suicidal thoughts,” Frederick says, “and we can have caring adults on the other end of the line ready to respond to their questions, or just be a presence there.” With many amazing programs comes spectacular people who are ready to help. The youth mainly return for Teen’s Night and other events because they love the staff. “At the end of the day, what the kids look forward to the most is the staff,” Frederick says. “We can take them on field trips to pumpkin patches, we can do cool concerts, we can give them a new pair of shoes, all those things that 28
