Team Dee is to mortgages what Trader Joes is for holiday shopping. Turns out you don’t need to dread it at all. Sure, it’s serious talk about money and planning and such, but it’s OK for it to be downright pleasant. Just like those peppermint sprinkle chocolate covered pretzels make you smile at checkout, with Team Dee - you got this!

If you buy houses based on the needs of your pets (yard, sunny window…) and your achievable 10 year plan, we have a lot in common. Don’t have a plan? Well, let’s start with that. You will learn how to custom design your mortgage to efficiently accomplish your goals. We will review a few scenarios so that you understand your choices. Forever after, when the cocktail party conversation turns to mortgages, you will have the answers.

“Dee was so amazing to work with. My partner and I were first time home buyers and she walked us through everything, explaining it so that it was easy to understand. Dee is funny, personable and most important of all, trustworthy. The process was so smooth and dare I say easy?? Our Realtor (who didn’t previously work with Dee) even started recommending her to clients!” - Alanna F.

“Dee is trustworthy and transparent about the entire lending process. She makes sure to give you all the facts and wants to make sure this is the best financial move for you before starting the process. She genuinely cares about the wellbeing of her clients. I highly recommend Dee and her Fairway team!”

Nowadays, almost everyone has at least one friend who is a Real Estate Broker. There are a lot of great Realtors out there and I am proud of their accomplishments as well as my own. These are the women who stand out in the community, who always have your back, who are genuine, grateful, giving, smart, honest and humble. This is what I expect from myself and what I hope to give to others. I have lived on Bainbridge Island for almost thirty years and have raised two daughters and a son here. I am involved with the local arts community as both a supporter and a performer in many musical productions. In life and in Real Estate, I have a “do whatever it takes to get the job done,” kind of attitude. A lot of grit, little bit of grace, and a good sense of humor helps me succeed in an industry that can be highly competitive. As a woman in my industry, it is important to lift each other up with one goal in mind - to help propel each other forward. I am passionate about this and strongly believe that supporting another woman’s success won’t ever dampen yours.

Real Estate is all about relationships, and chemistry is the key to a successful relationship. At the end of the day, you want to spend time with an individual that best suits your personality; a person that you trust and that you are compatible with and in some cases end up being lifelong friends. My business goal with Bainbridge Crystal Healing is to help educate people about balanced health from an energetic standpoint through crystals and to provide the necessary tools to help people through their personal self-health journey. It’s important the products I sell inspire well-being starting from the ground up and reflect an awareness around well-being with each link of the commerce chain. Wrapping paper made from locally sourced recycled newspapers in a repurposed warehouse with repurposed machinery, plant-based paints from a closed-loop company, gift baskets that are fair-trade and artisan created and most importantly, crystal merchandisers who provide an essential energy to the crystal collection. Currently I’m excited about a very ecologically based company using algae ink for graphics on shipping boxes.

What prompted me to start Compass & Clock? My mom had Alzheimer’s. When she and dad asked my siblings and me questions, we didn’t have answers and didn’t know where to turn. My head was into childcare because my kids were 7 and 8 years old. I didn’t know anything about Alzheimer’s or how that pertained to aging and thought those kinds of concerns were far into the future. We made really poor choices as a family Mary Coupland because we were not informed. If I had 206.321.8016 known then what I know now the last https://www.compassandclock.com/ five years of a beautiful 55 year marriage would’ve been of better quality. That’s why in January 2018 I founded Compass & Clock, LLC. For those of you that have read this 80-page high quality publication (in print or online), you can immediately tell that Compass & Clock is far more than just another magazine. It’s a labor of love but also one of hope…hope that through our efforts no one else will have to stand on shaky ground not knowing where to go for hard answers to even harder questions. Welcome to a community conceived with the aim of guiding you into your best possible future. Today, Compass & Clock is a free educational multimedia program incorporating tools and resources through podcasts, Zoom seminars, a monthly e-newsletter and in-person events along with our well-known print and e-magazine. In the spirit of fellowship, we have built a collection of knowledgeable, compassionate neighbors, professionals, and resources designed to help you navigate your journey through middle age, retirement, and your senior years. I am beyond grateful for the support of these like-minded community experts, for without them Compass & Clock would not exist.

One of my role models in business is cookbook author and restaurateur, Isa Chandra. She has successfully followed her passion each step of the way from childhood and made philanthropy a part of her business through lifestyle. For me, she embodies the essence of Being the Change. For Bainbridge Crystal Healing, like the act of baking, crystals can help to bring a sense of inner peace through energetic health to our personal lives. In turn, this can inspire outward change in the way we act in the world, and hopefully, bring about a greater sense of well-being.

Coaching people on energetic health has been a part of my professional life since 1994, and a stream of professional opportunities including volunteer-teaching at Seattle Central Community College and a culinary internship in San Francisco helped to cultivate my practice into a business.

Studies show how much more likely it is for today’s mothers and working females to provide essential financial support to their families compared to earlier generations. It can be empowering to be a sole or primary earner. However, this role also may place extra pressure on women who also want to be ideal mothers. While gender roles have become much more egalitarian, the traditional household dynamic, in which women take on more responsibilities around the house, remains

predominant in many families. That can contribute to stress for women who work. A 2015 University of Chicago study found that opposite-sex couples in which women were the top earners reported greater relationship strife and were more likely not to endure as couples. The study also found that some women who earned more did a greater amount of housework in order to make their husbands feel better about the situation. There are several ways to address and cope with feelings that arise from an increase in female breadwinners. • Stay open-minded. they adjust their roles accordingly and continue to adapt, things can work out just fine. • Divide tasks evenly. Evenly divvy up tasks around the house so that neither partner feels as if they are doing more than the other. • Share financial goals. Even if one person is bringing in more money, the overall household should be the main priority. That means that all adults have an equal say in financial goals, regardless of who earns the most money. Many women are now the primary breadwinners in their households. That has, in many cases, led to shifting gender roles and couples and families may have to adjust accordingly.

With roots based in the construction trades, I understand the building process and work diligently to create environmentally appropriate homes that are matched to my client’s needs, taking into consideration the nature of the building as well as the budget and personal taste of the clients. At The Lawson Design Studio, I offer a full-service design practice including but not limited to, offering assistance with all interior design and material selection decisions, as well as offering services as a general contractor.”

What to look for in a new career
By Metro Many people begin a new year determined to make positive changes in their lives. Some may aspire to read more books in the year ahead, while others may aim to master a new hobby. Professional goals also factor heavily into many people’s New Year’s resolutions. In a 2019 survey of baby boomers, who are generally defined as people born between 1946 and 1964, the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the average person has 12 jobs in his or her lifetime. That means that the average professional is likely to change jobs at various points during his or her career. Working professionals who have resolved to make a career change but don’t know where to begin can facilitate the process by determining what they want out of their next career. Knowing what to look for in a career can help people land a
job they will enjoy, and might even prevent them from changing jobs as many as a dozen times before retirement. • Salary: Few people would scoff at being offered higher salaries, but it’s important that professionals looking to change careers don’t place too great an emphasis on a high salary. A recent survey from the online career resource Indeed found that 58 percent of workers would accept a pay cut to change industries. That suggests that salary isn’t everything. However, established professionals no doubt also have an established quality of life, and some may not be comfortable if a lesser salary means they have to give up some of the luxuries they’ve grown accustomed to. Take some time to determine how much money you need to maintain your current quality of life and if giving up certain things, like the ability to

travel or dine out whenever you’d like, is a price you’re willing to pay for a new career. • Opportunity for advancement: A 2015 survey from the employment-oriented social media service LinkedIn found that the number one reason people switched jobs was related to opportunities for career advancement. The survey asked 10,000 people who recently left their jobs why they did so and 45 percent indicated they were concerned about the lack of opportunities for advancement at their old jobs. Switching careers is a significant decision that affects all aspects of professionals’ lives, including their families. When looking for a new career, look for one that provides opportunities for advancement after you get your foot in the door. If no such opportunities are available, you may soon find yourself switching jobs once again. • Positive environment: It can
be hard to gauge if a company you don’t work for fosters a positive or negative work environment, but exercising due diligence to determine this can have profound benefits. A 2008 study published in the International Journal on Disability and Human Development found that negative work environments contribute to insomnia, anxiety and depression. In addition, 36 percent of respondents to the LinkedIn survey indicated they left their old job due to dissatisfaction with the work environment. When looking for a new career, it’s important that professionals don’t overlook the value of a positive work environment. Professionals who have resolved to change careers in the year ahead can make their transition more successful by recognizing certain variables that can make work more enjoyable.

Virtual volunteering opportunities
By Metro Volunteerism is the life blood of charitable organizations. Many cannot function effectively without volunteers campaigning for their efforts, handling day-to-day activities and serving in many other essential capacities. During the pandemic, nonprofit organizations have been affected by social distancing recommendations. It’s challenging to lend a helping hand when those hands may inadvertently be passing on a potentially dangerous illness. Social distancing and other restrictions instituted in response to the global pandemic do not have to stifle volunteer efforts. The internet HELLO! Organizations like Goodwill, the United Nations and even AARP offer online volunteering opportunities. The following are a few additional ways to become a virtual volunteer. • Manage social media accounts. Charitable organizations recognize the importance of a social media presence, so prospective volunteers can offer to help nonprofits keep

their social media accounts updated and viable. • Assist those without sight. Volunteers with Be My Eyes can provide important assistance to blind or low-vision individuals. Virtual video calls enable volunteers to communicate with people directly and provide help. • Offer tutoring or teaching. Virtual learning has become the new norm in many different school districts. Parents who may need assistance with children adapting to remote learning can benefit from quality educators willing to lend their time and skill sets. • Design and build websites. Organizations may have trouble finding time to keep their websites updated with the latest information. Writers may be needed to keep blogs current, while coders can improve sites and make them more secure.
• Assist call centers. People may have various questions and needs in a time of crisis. Volunteers can be used in retail call centers, online therapy lifelines and even school offices. Remote technology enables calls to be parsed out and answered by volunteers working from home. • Translate emails and phone calls. Translators are always in demand in an increasingly global society. Bilingual men and women can volunteer as translators so their favorite charitable organizations can effectively overcome any language barriers that may exist between their staffs and the people they’re trying to help. Staying close to home has become the norm during the pandemic, paving the way for virtual volunteers to make a difference in their communities.

By Metro Much of the talk centered on women in the workforce concerns the disparity between earnings when compared against men in the same positions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the earnings difference between women and men varies with age, with younger women in the country more closely approaching pay equity than older women. Still, Pew Research Center says the female median annual earnings is around 83 percent of what men earn in the United States. The gender pay gap exists to some extent in every country in the world. Statistics Canada points out that women between the ages of 25 and 54 earned 87 cents an hour for every dollar made by men in 2015. Business Insider UK says Iceland, Finland and Norway boast

relatively small pay gaps between the genders. Even though a gender wage gap may exist, women can still pursue careers that are known to be wellpaying. The following are some of the top-earning positions women (and men) can consider, courtesy of Forbes, Monster.com and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. • Obstetrician/Gynecologist: Many women feel more comfortable being examined or discussing female issues with female doctors. This may account for the higher percentage of female OB/GYNs in practice. The job can be very rewarding because it enables one to care for women at various stages in life. The median annual salary for OB/GYNs is $207,000. • Chief executive: It’s a large responsibility overseeing an entire
company or division, but that’s what chief executives do on a daily basis. Approximate median annual earnings are $97,552. • Pharmacist: Pharmacists manage the distribution of medications, but they also consult patients on medication use and administer some immunizations. Some pharmacists work in drug or grocery stores, while others are employed in clinical settings. The median annual salary for pharmacists is $95,628. • Optometrist: Responsible for the examination and care of their patients’ eyes, optometrists also determine prescriptions for glasses and contacts. Optometrists earn a median annual salary of $102,000. • Attorney: Lawyers are consumers’ advocate and help explain the often confusing nuances of the law. Attorneys may specialize
in different areas, such as corporate law or family law. Attorney salaries vary depending on the specialty lawyers choose, but law can be a very lucrative field. • Computer and Information System Manager: These workers are also known as Information Technology (IT) Managers. They coordinate and implement
company-wide IT efforts, including networking, database development and trouble-shooting. IT managers earn median annual salaries of $87,400. While gender pay gaps may still exist, women can earn high salaries in an array of professions.
