Renton student victim of drive by shooting
Dealing kids a better future Local car dealerships mentor Renton students for future careers By Haley Ausbun hausbun@rentonreporter.com
Auto shops were a staple in many high schools 30 years ago. But today, the field has changed. Career Technical Education (CTE) classes have been on the decline for U.S. high school students since the ’90s, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics. O’Brien Auto Group Regional Manager Paul Lee said he never wanted to be in the car business growing up, but needed a job out of college in the ’80s. Getting someone young is about the only way to set up technicians for success, he said. But as CTE programs declined, the recruiting became more difficult, and it’s gotten harder for car dealerships to find needed technicians. “It seems to be if you are not an
athlete, or somebody in the music department, some of these kids fall between the cracks,” Lee said. “But (technician careers) are a viable pathway.” Today educators, including those in Renton School District, are trying to lift career training to the option it once was. And in the process of starting a new mentor program, students who are struggling or at risk are being supported by the community outside schools. That’s something CTE Worksite Learning Coordinator Terry Derrig said should be happening. “Sometimes people think it’s just a school’s responsibility (to help students), but I think it’s everybody’s,” Derrig said. “And it’s a very rewarding job.” The school district, Mentor Washington and Communities in Schools in Renton-Tukwila (CISR) partner with Renton auto dealerships to offer paid positions where high school students are mentored See STUDENTS, Page 3

The victim in a drive by shooting in Renton last week has been identified as a 16-year-old Renton resident. The young man was named Adan Gedi and confirmed by Renton School District to be a high school student. Gedi was in the backseat of a stolen vehicle, around 8:30 p.m., Feb. 6, traveling northbound near the 300 block of Rainier Avenue South when multiple rounds were shot into the vehicle. After driving to Seattle, the driver realized Gedi had been killed and called 911, according to Renton Police Department. The vehicle and several bullet casings found on Rainier Avenue South were impounded to evidence. The driver had no information on the shooter. The identity of the driver was not released by the Renton Police Department. Renton School District Spokesperson Randy Matheson confirmed Gedi was a student in Renton School District. He stated in an email that the school Gedi attended received additional counselors and outside community organizations were also there to offer support to the school community. On Friday, Feb. 7, a Renton High School Resource Officer made a public post on his Facebook page about grieving a student he knew and See SHOOTING, Page 2

Three die in Renton of Fentanyl overdose Shooting From Page 1
By Haley Ausbun hausbun@rentonreporter.com
Three fatal overdoses on the same day have prompted county officials to remind residents of the dangers of fentanyl and non-prescription pills. The three deaths all happened around the border of south Renton and Kent, and within the same morning, Thursday, Feb. 6. On Friday, Feb. 7 the King County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed one of the deaths as a 26-year-old Renton resident Krazz-lee Adrien, who suffered from accidental acute combined drug intoxication of fentanyl and benzodiazepine.
The deaths caused particular concern, according to a post from Public Health Seattle King County. Fentanyl-related deaths continue to rise in the county. Most commonly illicit fentanyl has been found in counterfeit Percocet and Oxycodone pills. But Public Health officials warn that fentanyl could be present in any illicit drug and any form, which cannot be seen, smelt or tasted and can vary in street drugs, even within the same batch. On Friday Renton Police Department posted on Facebook about one of the deaths. They state that officers were called to a possible
overdose and found one deceased person. A toxicology report found “high levels of fentanyl,” and featured the same chemical makeup as the other two overdoses. Police were told, according to the post, that the victim has been purchasing Percocet off the street for pain management. The laced drugs were a reminder of the dangers of street drugs, and Renton police warned community members to look out for each other. These deaths were three of the 47 probable or confirmed drug overdose deaths to happen so far in King County for

Public Health also asked that the following information about overdose safety be shared throughout the county: ■ Any Fentanyl can be fatal, folks should not take pills that aren’t prescribed to them. ■ Have naloxone ready for a potential overdose (available naloxone can be found at stopoverdose.org/section/ find-naloxone-near-you.) ■ Do not use drugs alone. ■ Suspected overdoses should be called in to 911 immediately. saw in the halls. He said he talked with him on a frequent basis and was deeply saddened to know a 16-year-old’s life was taken too soon. He also stated that he hopes young people in the community will stand up and say “enough is enough” to the normalization of lives lost to youth gun violence. “As the news spreads this morning as students awake to their instant feedback lives of social media, a family is mourning. A family that is now and will forever be changed because of someone’s careless regard for someone else’s life,” The officer stated in his post. “As the news is passed through the halls this morning a connection and web of friends, classmates, teachers and staff who all knew him, and interacted with him will be in
disbelief and sorrow.” Teenagers today, he stated, are going through more than he can sometimes comprehend. A GoFundme has been created to help Gedi’s family. As of press time, 166 people have donated $5,082 towards the $5,000 goal. Two new land acquisitions will expand Southport By Haley Ausbun hausbun@rentonreporter.com
SECO’s Southport has expanded with two new land acquisitions. The company, set to bring the tech boom to Renton’s Lake Washington shores, is continue to develop the area. One acquisition being in part of creating more access to the hotel, residential and
office space, and the other to develop a property next to the anticipated Topgolf. The city and SECO are working to create a second access point to the development by extending Park Avenue North into the site. SECO has just purchased the property along the expected access area from Puget Sound Energy. Once the road project is complete on the city’s side, SECO will start working on the access point on its property. The city hopes to begin the Park Avenue North

extension this year. The project would construct a pedestrian sidewalk below an existing trestle bridge, a railroad crossing. According to city documents, SECO would then extend Park Avenue with a private road to the parking garage tunnel on the Southport office site. The private portion of the road would have a minimum of one lane in each direction, sidewalk and streetlights. In late 2019 SECO also acquired about five acres of properties next to the planned Topgolf. SECO Vice President of Planning and Development Rocale Timmons said they are still in the conceptual stage and do not have a intended use for the site, but that SECO is excited to extend the village they have in the existing 17 Southport acres. In January, the company received its occupancy certificate from the City of Renton for office tower three, getting it prepared to receive tenants. Timmons said there is growing interest in the currently vacant three towers of office space, but said SECO is under a nondisclosure agreement with a prospective tenant which makes her unable to discuss the timeline or progress with filling the towers. More information on the Park Avenue Extension project can be found at the city’s website.

by an employee at the dealer, offering the student both job-training and someone to look up to. In this auto mentor program, which is in its first few years, students are paid to work after school with their mentors and they also receive a halfcredit for every 180 hours. Students express interest to Derrig or are identified through a CISR liaison in the high schools. Then they complete a resume, use a job-matchmaking test to make sure the position would be a good fit and do multiple interviews. The mentors at the dealerships have been trained by CISR, one of the partners in this program to give opportunities to at-risk youth. CISR previously had a mentoring part of its mission that connects caring adults in the community with a student who is
facing barriers outside the classroom. CISR Development Director Kathy Ulrich said their standard training teaches the mentors about diversity, equity, inclusion, how low-income and poverty can cause trauma in students’ lives, and how it might manifest in interns during the program. “These interns might have more challenges, but if you meet those challenges head-on you are going to get a hardworking, very dedicated staff member out of it,” Ulrich said. “Their environment and circumstances do not dictate who they are. They are capable of great futures and accomplishments.”
A new program The program started when a founding CISR board member joined the board for Mentor Washington and got the idea to create a mentor program, through Renton auto dealers, that would offer journeyman training.
Mentor Washington is a nonprofit that works closely with the State Department of Children and Youth Families in a public/private partnership, Senior Project Director Claude Green said. In turn, car dealerships that have experienced high turnover in technicians receive trainable young people. Today auto mechanic shops are different, they’re focused on STEM skills, tech-based and each company does things a little differently, Derrig said. That’s why the hands-on opportunity is so important for students who are interested in being technicians. The first student who started in the auto mentor program in Renton schools is now almost a master technician. Three years ago, Walker’s Renton Subaru was having a hard time finding people to replace technicians that were starting to retire. technician jobs are well-paying, Owner Dale Walker said, but there’s a lack of awareness. Then they were
approached to help start the auto mentor program. Nick Romo, at the time a high school senior, started as the first mentee for the Mazda dealership as an apprentice technician. He was a natural. Romo told an interviewer, in a Renton Schools video about the program from 2018, that it was an eye opener for the level of work ethic needed in a shop like that. Romo was determined to make a career of it, he said in the interview. Since then, Romo had to leave Mazda to move to Los Angeles. But he had a job waiting for him. Walker said with the skills Romo learned he could go anywhere and is now almost a master technician. The dealerships involved in this are also offering other jobs for the mentees, including accounting, servicing and parts replacement positions.
A new partner Right now a few students are in the program starting
with a new partner, Toyota of Renton, a member of the O’Brien Auto Group. O’Brien Regional Manager Paul Lee said they’ve been moving quickly to get involved in the apprenticeship. O’Brien already had a mentor-style offering for existing employees before being approached by the groups involved in the auto mentor program, so it was an easy transition. Lee said it was amazing how many employees stepped forward and offered to be a mentor. He said the mentor’s are gaining something important just as much as the mentees. “After doing a job for 20 years, you know, you get up and go to work (each day). Then you finally are presented with an opportunity to make a difference in a young person’s life. It’s cool to see it goes both ways,” Lee said. Lee said he’s talked to other O’Brien regional managers about the program and what Project

Director Claude Green is doing—believing in kids and making a difference with resources from Mentor Washington. Lee said people in the community want the chance to make that difference for students, too. After graduation, students in the auto mentor program can either continue with their work at the shop, work part time and attend school part time at Renton Technical College, or drop it and decide it’s not right for them. At Walker’s Renton, district CTE coordinator Derrig said the split for students who continued school or went full time at the shop was about 50-50. “They’re getting transferable job skills that will help them in any career later on. At least they started down that path (in high school),” Derrig said. “They get the mentorship they need to get through this difficult time, high school is difficult for a lot of these students. They have responsibilities they shouldn’t have to have.”
Inspection debunks fake viral cockroach video A local IHOP restaurant received an “excellent” rating after complaints made By Haley Ausbun hausbun@rentonreporter.com

e have heard it a million times — a good education is the best way to break the cycle of poverty. Education has remained a core value across the globe because it provides access to living wage jobs, health care, economic security and an overall quality of life. Our communities and economy have thrived on the principal that if you go to college and work hard, you can build the life you always imagined. College offers a life that sparks images of hope, prosperity, quality time spent with friends and family and a fulfilling career. It is at the center of the American Dream. However, this is becoming more difficult to attain for today’s young people. Since the Great Recession, our economy hasn’t been working for America’s youth. In many ways, it’s been working against them. The cost of tuition has edged many young people out of college attendance, while others take on backbreaking levels of student loan debt before they have any idea what they have signed up for. As of 2019, national student loan debt has spiked to $1.5 trillion, with concerns it may be the next big national financial crisis. In Washington, we

REP. ZACK HUDGINS have a long track record of working to reduce this burden for our college students. Last year, the Legislature passed the Washington Workforce Education Investment Act, which provided access to free public college education for Washington students. The College Bound Scholarship program, established in 2007, covers tuition for low-income students for up to four years. However, as the homelessness crisis rips across the state, college students are finding themselves with nowhere to go once outside the walls of their classrooms. Food pantries have become commonplace on college campuses nationwide. For students, the first year of college is crucial. It’s tough and designed to mold and test them for the working world ahead. Students are expected to learn who they are as individuals while balancing work, demanding course loads and confusing social dynamics. This is close to an impossible task for
a student who must choose between finishing statistics homework and finding a dry place to sleep in the winter and a warm meal to eat. A Temple University survey estimates 36 percent of college students are housing insecure and nine percent are homeless. However, we don’t really know how widespread this problem is because once students leave K-12, the state is no longer required to track that data. What is clear is that we need to do more in supporting college

students beyond tuition. Legislation being discussed in Olympia would do just that. House Bill 1278 would require colleges and universities offering on-campus housing to provide first-year College Bound Scholarship students without shelter access to room and board when space is available. Because only unoccupied rooms will be given, no other students will be displaced, and the colleges will only foot minimal costs. Higher education is
the best way to ensure that our homeless youth do not become homeless adults. Giving these students extra support will ease the unique difficulties they face and allow them to focus on education and preparing for adulthood. If we really want to break the cycle of poverty, we act holistically and give disadvantaged students all the tools they need to graduate and pursue their careers. Rep. River flooding pushes Renton to the limits By Haley Ausbun hausbun@rentonreporter.com
Flooding last week prompted a brief from city of Renton at the Feb. 10 council meeting, alerting councilmembers and the public where the main damage was done. The Cedar River reached 9,000 cubic feet per second (cfs), a significant peak flow, and the Green River reached 12,300 cfs. “In my 30 years here at city of Renton it’s only the second time I’ve ever seen the Green River go above 12,000 cfs,” Renton Utilities Systems Director Ron Straka said. On Thursday, Feb. 6, rainfall and snow melt in the mountains started the high river flows in both Green and Cedar River, which were categorized at phase four flooding, which is a severe level. On Monday, Feb. 10, the rivers were both at phase three. City staff said it was an ongoing issue, but they expected it to recede by Thursday, Feb. 13. The city did not have a financial estimate on the damage done by the flood yet, but Renton Emergency Management Director Deborah Needham told councilmembers during the last major flooding event in 2009, the city experienced $4 million worth of damage. Much of the costs can be reimbursed through FEMA, Needham said, but first they require a Presidential Disaster Declaration from the President of the U.S. The county needs to meet $7.5 million worth of damages to receive a declaration, and the state in total must have $10.5 million in damages. If the city gets FEMA funding, that will recoup 75 percent, the state then may kick in 12.5 percent. That would leave Renton will only the remaining 12.5 percent of costs. State Route 169 experienced closures due to flooding, mudslides and debris over the weekend and early into this week. Nile Avenue and May Valley Road also experienced road closures. Overall, public works staff said Renton’s storm system and flood protection facilities performed well and prevented significant problems or damage. Significant flooding impacted facilities all along the Cedar River. The most
damage was along the Cedar River Trail, Community Services Administrator Kelly Beymer said. The undermining of the river’s bank brought the edge only a couple feet away from the paved trail. City staff have barricaded 75 yards on either side. They will need to bring engineers in to decide what to do about the damage, Beymer said. Like some residences near the river, the Riviera Apartments experienced river flowing into its parking lot, but city staff reported it did not reach the apartment complex. At the Renton Maplewood Golf Course, 14 holes were still open but significant flooding closed four of the newly-built holes. Those were closed over the weekend. The Elliot Fish Spawning channel was also overtopped and trees were down along the trail area. The lower walkway along the Cedar River and the grass behind the Renton Senior Activity Center experienced high flooding as well. The Renton Municipal Airport is located next to the mouth of the river flowing into Lake Washington. As a result, debris including large logs and other things swept away during the flood have clogged the waterside of the airport. In a Feb. 10 committee meeting, city staff said it was “crazy” the amount of debris that went out into the lake. In preparation for the flooding, the South Boeing Bridge next to the Cedar
River Trail Park was hydraulically raised into the air. It protected the bridge from damage and prevented river backup. The bridge was upgraded by Boeing in 1998 to raise this way, staff said. Carco Theatre is the only interior city infrastructure to receive flooding, at several inches in the basement level. City staff said while flooding did not go over the sandbags the city put to protect it, the sump pumps failed to keep up with rising flow and brought in groundwater. The staff then brought in additional sump pumps and staffed the basement 24-7 to keep the basement over. Once the basement dries out they will assess the damage. The city staff said they will be checking other city infrastructure for any additional damage, including trails and walkways that were impacted by the flooding, once the river flow goes down. During the flood event, city staff monitored river gauges and reported out any road closures and expected weather conditions. Staff cleared landslide debris from Maple Valley Highway, sandbagged city facilities, cleaned up Carco Theatre and prepared for emergency notifications.
