That’s how many minutes per day consumers should listen to music to reap its full therapeutic beneﬁts. According to a new study from international streaming service Deezer and the British Academy of Sound Therapy, a balanced diet of music should include a mix of uplifting, relaxing and motivating songs. The top mood-boosting tunes included ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” Ed Sheeran’s “Sing,” Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” and “Be Happy” by Mary J. Blige, among others. Need to overcome sadness? Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind” was the top choice. Looking to relax? Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement” will do the trick.

Drying Dilemma While washing your hands is one way to keep viruses at bay, you may want to rethink those high-speed public restroom hand dryers. One study at the University of Westminster in London noted that high-speed jet air dryers dispersed 20 times more germs than warm air dryers and 190 times more than paper towels. “Wet hands increase the risk of transmitting bacteria, so drying is still an important step in prevention,” says Cleveland Clinic urgent care specialist Theresa Lash-Ritter, M.D. Her suggestion? Good old-fashioned paper towels. “It not only dries hands faster, but it dislodges bacteria to leave them cleaner.”

nown as much for her storytelling as her work in health psychology, Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D, is translating the neuroscience behind ﬁtness into practical strategies for health and happiness. In her new book, The Joy of Movement, McGonigal inspires readers to move—and love it. Here, she talks about some surprising ways that ﬁtness boosts our bodies and minds.

Move With Music “When you listen to music, the brain activates the motor system, which is why it’s used for stroke survivors and those with Parkinson’s disease. By listening to tunes you’ve previously exercised to, you can tap into the same feelings of strength, energy or happiness.”

It’s a stress-buster “Exercise has always been my goto strategy for dealing with stress,” McGonigal says. She points to a landmark 25-year-old study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology that found physical activity to be the most effective way to improve your mood. It beat eating, sleeping and talking with friends. “While it doesn’t eliminate stress, it does help us handle it with greater hope and calm. Plus, it tends to shift our mood toward a more positive outlook.” Psychologists call this the feel-better effect, she says, and it can be triggered by any type of exercise, even low-intensity activities like walking and stretching. “What matters is that you move.” It helps us connect When exercising, the brain releases chemicals, such as endorphins and endocannabinoids, which “increase the pleasure we take from connecting with others,” McGonigal says. “If you

want to strengthen a relationship, take a walk together. If you want to form new friendships, find a place where you can move with others. If you struggle with social anxiety, regular exercise can make it easier and more enjoyable to spend time with others.” It offers hope In The Joy of Movement, McGonigal writes about the science behind “hope molecules”—chemicals released by the muscles into the bloodstream during exercise to protect the brain from stress. “These chemicals can [actually] help people recover from trauma,” she says. “Every time you move, you are giving yourself an intravenous dose of hope.” It boosts your brain Physical activity is already linked to better brain health, and McGonigal says that regular exercise can not only protect against Alzheimer’s disease but also strengthen the brain’s reward system. “This can relieve depression and make you better able to experience everyday pleasures,” she says. It can make you happier Because community enhances the joy of movement, McGonigal (who has also been a group yoga, dance and strength-training instructor for 20 years) suggests group fitness classes. “We can take strength from seeing others’ efforts,” she says. “You get a stronger endorphin rush than when exercising alone, and there is even a specific feel-good effect of moving with others that psychologists call ‘collective joy.’ After being physically active with a group, people feel more optimistic, more hopeful and more connected to others.”

Green Curry Hummus With Roasted Sweet Potato Chips 2 medium sweet potatoes, thinly sliced into ⅛-inch thick pieces ½ cup plus 1 Tbsp olive oil, divided

⅓ cup tahini (ground sesame paste)

¼ cup chopped cilantro

2 (15-oz) cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed

¼ cup unsweetened coconut milk

Zest of ½ a lime

¾ tsp salt, divided

Juice of 1 lime

¾ tsp pepper, divided

2 cloves garlic, minced

1. Preheat oven to 225°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In a large bowl, toss potatoes with 1 Tbsp oil, ¼ tsp salt and ¼ tsp pepper. Place on prepared baking sheet in an even layer. Bake 1 hour and 15 minutes until crispy and edges are golden. 3. Combine tahini, chickpeas, lime zest and juice, garlic, cilantro, curry paste, coconut milk, red pepper ﬂakes, ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp pepper in a food

My love of cooking started early. I remember being six years old watching my Nonnie fry up bread. She asked me if I wanted cheese or jam on it, and knowing that you could change one ingredient—that it could be sweet or it could be cheesy—really intrigued me. And watching my mom come up with amazing dinners in her kitchen every day (without a microwave), seeing the art that went into it, that’s what started my lifelong love affair with cooking. If there was anything like Hot in Cleveland, I would hop back into acting in a heartbeat! I know the girls and I would deﬁnitely get together for some sort of reunion. But it wasn’t just about us. The writing and producing staff made it so brilliant. I think Melanie would be just as goofy as she’s always been; still wearing her heart on her sleeve and trying to look at the good side of life, even when it keeps slapping her in the face. I love that about her. I still struggle with my weight. I have good and bad days. There are weeks when I’m really good about what I put into my body, getting on my Peloton and working out. And then there are days when I don’t feel like being good to myself. That’s when gratitude helps. I say, “Hey, I can still climb these stairs.” I try to be grateful for what I have—and ﬁtting into a pair of jeans, I don’t let that ruin my day. I don’t like fad diets. I try to put the healthiest ingredients in my body, but I’m just confused sometimes by what one person says is healthy, and another says isn’t. I do believe that fat is good for us, so I’m going to continue to use butter and all the healthy oils!

I was so shocked to win two Daytime Emmys for Valerie’s Home Cooking. I have both of my Emmys on my dining room table. I’ll put a big beautiful vase of flowers between them. I see them as soon as I walk in the door, and I say, “Thank you girls. I love you.” My whole life, I’ve had this imposter syndrome. “You shouldn’t be doing this. You’re so lucky to be doing that. Wait till they find out about you.” Winning my Emmys chipped away at that a little bit. I’m in a world where people make fun of actors trying to get into cooking, but I’ve been doing it longer than I’ve been acting. And I find so much joy in it. To be accepted and have people like the show and have it win Emmys is incredibly satisfying. I’ve enjoyed being a part of the Food Network Kitchen App. I’ve done two live classes so far. To interact with everybody as you’re cooking is the most fun and interesting thing about it for me—I was watching Alex Guarnaschelli’s class today. I learned so much from her! My website curates everything I’ve learned over the years.
