Sports Concussions Can Have Serious Long-Term Effects if Not Treated Properly Since she was in kindergarten, Georgia Richens loved sports. Soccer and running became her passion, helping her manage stress throughout high school.

Like a typical athlete, Richens was no stranger to sports injuries. So when she was hit in the face while playing soccer in her sophomore year, she didn’t expect to be sidelined for weeks. Especially since she had just made it to the varsity team, and it was only the beginning of the season.

“Doctors kept telling me two more weeks, then two more weeks, and a month later I still couldn’t return,” she says. “It was hard because it’s an invisible injury, and people thought I was faking it.”

Richens didn’t return to the field until the final game. But when she continued with club soccer in the summer, she sustained two more concussions. She was happy to finish her junior year concussion-free, yet she still felt “like something was definitely off.”

“The last three concussions weren’t in sports, but related to whiplash in her neck,” Laurie Richens says. “When she gets dizzy, she slips and falls, and can get a concussion without even hitting her head.”

In the meantime, Richens has decided to change her major from engineering to kinesiology because she wants to raise awareness about concussions among high school athletes — and she hopes to change people’s perspectives. She says that like many athletes, she often times pretended to feel better just so she could play. According to her mother, that’s because there is a pervasive culture in high school sports that puts pressure on the athletes to return to the field as quickly as possible.

“It’s not worth lying (about feeling better) to be put into the game,” Richens advises other teens. Concussions are definitely more than a bump to the head, and the brain is more important to you than you ever thought.”
