NFL players use it to treat aches and pains. Doctors prescribe it for arthritis. Seniors use it for pain relief. And pot shops in the West Sound region are seeing sales of it grow. CBD is a non-psychoactive chemical found in marijuana plants, and it can be delivered in just about any form. Its supporters say CBD can treat epilepsy, soothe muscle pain, ease arthritis symptoms, reduce anxiety, and more, without a high. Continues on page 5

At West Sound marijuana shops like Paper and Leaf on Bainbridge Island, Agate Dreams in Suquamish, and HWY 420 in Silverdale, CBD extract is becoming increasingly popular among customers, and is sold in forms ranging from capsules, to vape oil, to lip balm. “It’s pretty amazing,” said Annette Atkinson, an herbalist at HWY 420, on Clear Creek Rd. Atkinson said she takes one CBD pill each day to ease her arthritic pain. She said when she doesn’t take her capsule, the difference is stark. Because of state laws, licensed marijuana shops are not allowed to sell pure CBD products – they have to contain some THC in them. Many products have trace amounts of THC – at a ratio of 40:1, or higher – that are non-intoxicating. Atkinson said a growing number of people – between 5 and 20 percent of the business – are coming into the shop asking specifically for CBD products. And it’s not just older people. “We get young people in now, too,” she said. “It’s absolutely gaining in popularity.” Popular interest in CBD, which stands for cannabidiol and is extracted from the hemp plant, has changed how growers produce their marijuana. chemical in weed. But more recently, plant growers have changed course to grow more CBD-heavy strains. “It’s coming back,” Atkinson said. At Agate Dreams, a marijuana store owned by the Suquamish Tribe, manager Tom Mitchell said CBD products are becoming popular with elders of all backgrounds. “Anybody around 50 and up,” Mitchell said. The store has a display case dedicated to CBD products like tinctures, edibles, lotions and even bubble bath. Bryan Keith, an employee at Agate Dreams, said he uses what’s called “Rick Simpson Oil,” a highly concentrated serum with about 62 percent CBD to 2.4 percent THC, for his lower back pain. The oil is named after a Canadian medical marijuana activist. There is still more research needed before scientists can conclude on CBD’s health benefits. And some CBD manufacturers have come under government scrutiny for claims that it is a cure-all. At HWY 420, there’s even a CBD product with a brand new target audience. For legal reasons, the product is called a “companion tincture,” though it comes with a picture of a furry friend. “It’s bacon flavored,” Atkinson said.

Types of marijuana: What effect do you want? Any seasoned smoker knows there are three distinct types of marijuana: sativa, indica and hybrid. The plants of cannabis indica and cannabis sativa have been around since the 18th century with cannabis Hybrid being relatively new. Hybrid indicates the mixing of seeds from different geographic locations around the world. The effects of each vary.
INDICA: The Indica strain is a more relaxing effect with the tendency of making you want to hang out on the couch. The origin is believed to come from the Hindu Kush region close to Afghanistan. Anyone who knows anything about marijuana knows that Kush is really strong weed. In this area of Afghanistan, the strain developed thick coats of resin as a mean of protecting themselves due to the harsh climate. Characteristics of indica include flowering time, yields, geography of where seeds came from and various flavors. Some of the epic names given to top flavors include Purple Haze, Granddaddy Purple and Northern Lights.
SATIVAS: The sativas strain alternatively has energizing effects which is why they’re often used in the morning or afternoon. This strain of marijuana is used primarily for depression and exhaustion. Its morphology is a growth of up to 20 feet high, it is narrow with loose branches. The effects of sativa are said to be uplift ing and allow you to be creative. Medicinally, it can treat ADD and mood disorders. Some of the more popular flavors under the sativa strain include Sour Diesel, Jack Herer and Lemon Haze.
HYBRID: There are many variables for the two ancient strains which is where Hybrid comes in. The seeds of many geographical areas are cross germinated to balance marijuana with both strains. This offers the marijuana user a balance between the two so you get the best of both worlds.

Marijuana can only be sold and purchased at state-licensed retail stores. A valid photo ID is required and no one under age 21 is allowed on the retail premises. Many retail marijuana stores only accept cash Adults 21 and over can purchase up to one ounce of useable marijuana (the harvested flowers or bud) 16 ounces of marijuana-infused edibles in solid form, 72 ounces in liquid form, and seven grams of marijuana concentrates. Price will vary according to the quality and availability. Some strains are considered better than others. Most stores aim at $10-$12 per gram, although that price can go as high as $25. There are 28 grams in one ounce, the amount that can be legally purchased at one time. Typically, that amount can cost $300 and up. It remains a felony for anyone but a licensed retailer to sell or provide marijuana to anyone else. in prison and a $10,000 fine. It remains illegal to consume marijuana in public view. It is illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana, and doing so may result in significant legal penalties. Taking marijuana outside the state of Washington may result in significant legal penalties. As with tobacco, smoking marijuana in any indoor location is subject to the restrictions in the Washington Smoking in Public Places law. The law prohibits smoking in public places or places of employment, and within 25 feet of entrances, exits, open windows and ventilation intakes. If the establishment permits it and you are either vaporizing or strain in a room where smoking is allowed, it is legal to consume marijuana in a private hotel room. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, if you are in navigable waters, they will enforce federal law. Possession of marijuana is still illegal federally. This is also true at national parks. And it is never OK to operate a boat while impaired by marijuana or any other drug. The law against marijuana use in public view applies to state parks, public hiking trails, and ski resorts.
