WELCOME

If you're thinking about a trip to Whidbey, there's something you should know: visitors are highly susceptible to falling in love with this island paradise. But don’t just take our word for it. Reader’s Digest Magazine crowned Whidbey one of the “nicest” places in America, and Coastal Living magazine named it one of the “happiest” coastal areas in the United States.

Charming and romantic, yet anything but sleepy and boring — Whidbey Island stands out as Puget Sound’s best getaway because it never falls into a winter slumber.

Rich history, creative atmosphere and unparalleled natural beauty are all found here, and each community has a distinct character that offers a little something for everyone. Oak Harbor, a vibrant community, offers everything from great shopping and dining to military history and golf. It is the largest city on Whidbey and is a great base for exploring the North End. Coupeville is a quiet town by comparison. It still reflects the character of a frontier seaport when Puget Sound was first settled. Yet, it offers both great food and shopping. It's also situated within Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, a one-of-a-kind national treasure that offers visitors a rare glimpse of the past.

Greenbank is another lovely locale, and home to the historic Greenbank Farm.

It's a place for long walks or learning about sustainable energy. Eat some of the tastiest pie you’ll ever have at Whidbey Pies and stroll through the small shops and galleries. Nestled between Holmes Harbor and Mutiny Bay, Freeland is an active community and South Whidbey's commercial hub.

Downtown offers shopping and dining all within walking distance. Freeland also

offers some of the finest beaches on the island, such as Double Bluff Beach Park (pictured above). Langley, also known as the Village by the Sea, is a charming community home to inns and restaurants of national recognition.

There's also a lot to do: wander through galleries and shops, watch master glass blowers at work, visit the Langley Whale Center or observe sea life in person from a kayak. Rub elbows with artists, winemakers and coffee roasters and shop, shop, shop.

Finally, Clinton is the gateway to Whidbey Island for many visitors. It is the landing for one of two ferry routes serving the island. Host to a wonderful artist community, Clinton also offers lovely parks, beaches and an innovative business community. Located at the heart of Puget Sound, just northwest of Seattle and southwest of the San Juans, a Whidbey Island getaway is closer than you think, and getting here is half the fun.

Whether you’re crossing breathtaking Deception Pass Bridge or arriving by ferry from Mukilteo, the island is about one hour from the heart of Seattle. From the Olympic Peninsula, Whidbey is only a 30-minute ferry ride from Port Townsend.

A little known fact about Whidbey Island that should not go unmentioned — situated in the rain shadow of the Olympics, parts of the island receive less than half the average rainfall of Seattle.

ACCOMMODATIONS If you've been searching for a rural, winter retreat with great accommodations, Whidbey Island is the place for you.

It’s home to awesome restaurants, fantastic shopping and plenty of places to rest your head. Starting in Whidbey Island’s most populated area, Oak Harbor offers a mix of inns and modern hotels.

There is THE BEST WESTERN (360679-4567, http://bestwesternwashington.com), which can accommodate the whole family and serve as a home base for activities in the area. It also has an exercise facility, 37-inch flat-screen televisions and a heated pool that is open seasonally. Also in town are the AULD HOLLAND INN (360-675-2288, www. auld-holland.com) and COACHMAN INN (360-675-0727, www.thecoachmaninn.com).

The BLUFF ON WHIDBEY (408-4977753, www.thebluffonwhidbey.com) is a bed and breakfast that offers views of Mount Baker, Saratoga Passage, Hope Island and the foothills of the Cascades. There is also military lodging that accommodates families of servicemen and servicewomen,

Traveling to Central Whidbey and Coupeville, visitors have their choice between a taste of farm life and the town’s historic downtown district, as well as everything in between. In a converted 1937 firehouse, visitors can stay at the FIREHOUSE INN (360-678-2184, www.coupevillefirehouseinn.com). Pets are welcome, though some breed restrictions may apply and it costs an additional $15 per night as well as approval over the phone. There are also several B&Bs, two of which are located on North Main Street: THE BLUE GOOSE INN (360-687-4284, https://bluegooseinn.com/); and the ANCHORAGE INN (360-678-5581, www.anchorage-inn.com). They fulfill historic and modernized tastes. An area icon is the historic CAPTAIN WHIDBEY INN (360678-4097, www.captainwhidbey.com), which is located on Penn Cove. It has waterfront views, a bar and restaurant. In addition to suites in the lodge, the inn also offers private cabins.

For those looking to get a taste of farm life, there is the CROCKETT FARM BED AND BREAKFAST (360-678-2036). The bed and breakfast has five rooms and one of the oldest farmsteads on Whidbey Island If your stay takes you to South Whidbey, Clinton is home to WHIDBEY ISLAND VACATION HOUSE (425-802-0868, www. whidbeyvacationhouse.com) with a view of the Clinton-to-Sweetwater Cottage. There is also the HUMMINGBIRD’S NEST, which can be rented through Airbnb or by calling 425-502-2352.

If your travels take you to Langley, affectionately known as the Village by the Sea, there are several options for lodging in this quiet, artsy town. One in particular, the INN

AT LANGLEY (360-221-3033, www.innatlangley.com), offers both a glimpse of what it’s like to live in the community and provides a stunning view of Saratoga Passage.

The upscale waterfront hotel is considered among the top 500 in the world, according to Travel & Leisure.

Matt Costello, general manager, co-owner and chef, has said that while the inn is not the cheapest on the South End, it delivers an experience that allows visitors to immerse themselves in activities in Langley. They give out free movie tickets to the Clyde Theater, a historic venue for movie goers that is located down the street, and offer free yoga, pilates and discounts with a kayaking company.

Other places to stay in Langley include the BOATYARD INN (360-221-5120), which is located near the Langley Marina and has deluxe accommodations with water views, the SARATOGA INN (360-221-5801) and the COUNTRY COTTAGE OF LANGLEY BED AND BREAKFAST (360-221-8709).

For those looking for a hilltop retreat, there is the EAGLES NEST INN (360-221-5331), which offers water views as well as a free gourmet breakfast and hot tub.

A few miles up the road in Freeland is the HARBOR INN MOTEL (360-331-6900), an affordable overnight stay that’s close to Highway 525 and restaurants. There are also several eclectic alternatives such as the SOMEDAY FARM VEGAN BED AND BREAKFAST (360-331-2864). This B&B is a bit off the beaten path, located near Goss Lake and nestled on 70 acres, but it’s a perfect place to get away and experience rural Whidbey — the farm animals are pretty fun. It’s great for bicyclists and other groups looking for affordable overnight accommodations.

Right off the ferry in Clinton on Highway 525, look for an old storefront marked MAKE Whidbey. Described as a “little shop of Whidbey makers,” the store blends handmade home decor with wooden crafts as well as soaps, candles and other original goods. It's filled with the finely crafted cutting boards, clocks and carafes made by store owner Janae Cameron and her husband. Nearby, Abundant Earth Fiber is an independent textile mill that churns out small batches of naturally-dyed yarn. A small storefront at the mill sells yarn, batts, tincture dyes, tools and kits. If you hear the low hum of two industrial textile machines, it means that owner Lydia Christiansen and her crew are in the middle of their “farm to yarn” magic.

LANGLEY

Shopping for gifts is a pleasant experience in Langley, and how could it not be in a charmed setting dubbed The Village by the Sea? Small specialty shops line the tiny downtown, all filled with a variety of items from boutique soaps to first edition books to glass -blown floats and flowers.

Prices vary from higher-end selections of unique clothing and textiles to gently worn treasures found at Good Cheer Thrift Store on Anthes Avenue.

Music for the Eyes on First Street, is Langley’s international street bazaar, specializing in carpets, beads, jewelry and amazing winter hats, mittens and gloves from Central Asia.

Fair Trader Outfitters on Anthes Avenue proudly states it “sells apparel that is made by workers that are justly compensated, work in clean, safe environments, with fair hours.”

First Street stores featuring Northwest home decor, small-batch goods, crafts and ornaments include In the Country, Foamy Wader, Old Soul Bazaar, The Feather and Fox, Wish by the Sea and a store/art gallery called edit.

On the same street, you can also find seasonal flowers and plants at Flower Bear Farm & Design and The Chocolate Farm, and stock up on a rainbow of yarn at Knitty Purls. Right next door, Whidbey Island Gem Gallery and Wayward Son are the places to check out gemstones, crystals and other natural stones, and consult about customdesigned jewelry.

Kids and adults who love books, puzzles, poetry and cards should take the time to explore Moonraker Books on First Street while collectors head to Gregor Rare Books on Second Street.

Act 11 Books and Puppets, Anthes Avenue, is also geared for families with

Glasswork exhibited at Rob Schouten Gallery in Langley. young children with a dazzling display of Folkmanias finger puppets, hand puppets, stage puppets and hard and soft cover books.

Callahan’s Firehouse Studio and Gallery is the centerpiece of Second Street. It’s filled with flowers, paper weights, sea stars, vases and many more sparkling items all created on site. Buy a fragile fish or treat someone to a glassblowing lesson.

Whidbey Island Natural features luxurious organic soaps and lotions and Sweet Mona’s is a mecca for chocolate lovers.

There’s little souvenir shlock to be found in Langley but a couple places stock items with Langley and Whidbey Island monikers.

Check out the historic Star Store on First Street or Langley Whale Center’s gift shop on Anthes Avenue.

Langley is also home to a host of art galleries, including Whidbey Art Gallery, Museo and the Rob Schouten Gallery.

All sell smaller items, such as cards and jewelry. Whidbey Arts Gallery, representing 36 artists, sells a variety of items that are whimsical or made with recycled parts. It also contains a hallway of beautiful cards and photographs, most with Whidbey and Pacific Northwest scenes.

Just north of Langley is Bayview Corner, which is anchored by the historic Bayview Cash Store, saved from being torn down and now thriving with art, food, wine, salons and small one-of-a-kind shops, including Side Market, a collaboration of four artists.

Next door, stroll the sprawling grounds of Bayview Farm and Garden and check-out its barn jam-packed with books, cards, gardening and home accessories.

CENTRAL WHIDBEY

Central Whidbey is loaded with shops and stores that range in size and content, offering everything from the latest trends to the truly eclectic.

You'll find no shortage of stores in Greenbank and Coupeville filled with items crafted with care right here on the island.

One of Washington’s few remaining “towns,” Coupeville's small community is nestled within Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, which is a unit of the national park system. This waterfront community is home to century-old buildings, a museum and enough small-town shops to keep shoppers browsing for hours.

On Front Street, visitors will find souvenirs and knickknacks, decorations, gifts, clothing and locally made treasures galore.

Starting with a bit of fun, swing by Far From Normal, the shop with an inventory so wacky that it’s guaranteed to make you grin.

Down the street is Aqua Gifts, a home decor and accents, gifts and antiques shop.

Elkhorn Trading Company is another great place to find treasures from the past.

One of downtown’s more recent businesses is Posh Upscale Resale. Think elegance, style and affordability. Similarly,

the Handbag Consignment Shop is a place where visitors can purchase high-end designer purses.

To bring home a gift that’ll remind someone of island life, walk down to stores like Penn Cove Gallery where many of the artists featured capture the area’s beauty.

Visit Whidbey Island Yarn, Gifts and Teas for hand-spun and dyed yarn produced by animals on Whidbey Island. Or, pick up an already-completed gift using that yarn like a hat or scarf to keep your loved one warm this winter.

At bayleaf, the gourmet food shop not only sells delectable imported meats and cheeses, but the shop features a variety of Whidbey-made products.

Not far from bayleaf, the Lavender Wind shop sells a range of products made from lavender grown at the nearby Lavender Wind Farm. They have essential oils, gift sets, cleaners, scents, decorative bundles, lotions, shampoos, culinary lavender, baked goods, eye soothers, massage oil, soap and on and on.

A Touch of Dutch features clothing as well as art, delicacies and souvenirs.

For playful children hoping to snag a few toys, be sure to check out local favorite the Honey Bear. It’s a toy and candy haven packed with a rainbow of selections from the

educational and old-fashioned to the colorful and tasty. If you’re thinking you may have missed out on Coupeville’s unique shopping experience, try One More Thing. The shop on Main Street offers clothing, quilts and gifts.

Greenbank Farm, located about 10 minutes north on Highway 525, features a mix of businesses.

Greenbank Cheese Specialty Foods & Gifts has some of tastiest stuff around. The shop offers a healthy selection of locally made cheeses as well as some of the finest from around the world. To complement the menu, swing by the neighboring Greenbank Wine Shop; it’s the perfect pairing.

For the sweeter side of life, try Whidbey Pies Cafe. The cafe also serves lunch — the grilled turkey sandwich with house-made chutney is awesome.

The farm also features two art galleries, including Artworks Gallery and Raven Rocks Studio. There are items for every wallet size, and in varying mediums from metalwork and glass art to painting and mixed media art.

Seaside & Sylvan offers "all things home, in Whidbey style," including nautical-themed home decor.

Of course, there’s also Popsies, a favorite for children and adults alike. The shop is famous for its homemade caramel corn, but it also sells ice cream and sweets of all different kinds.

Up a block on Fidalgo Avenue is Whidbey

Beer Works, a specialty beer shop with a selection of more than 600 beers, ciders, meads and wines. From the hippest IPAs to imported stouts, the shop has something for just about any beer-drinkers on your holiday list.

Located on the highway, Seabolts smokes salmon and other fish caught by local fishermen and fisherwomen. The family-owned business has a state-of-the-art smokehouse and offers an assortment of smoked fish in different packaging, as well as gift assortments with crackers and other items.

On the south end of the city lies the Ishler Pottery Studio. It creates creatively crafted, functional and artistic pottery. The artist is known for using unique glazes on his works: crystalline, ash and spitfire. He also creates whimsical cars from clay.

Whidbey Island offers a number of experiences for those hungry for adventure, but it also has a lot to offer for some who are just hungry. From its northern tip the Clinton ferry dock, there are a variety of dining choices to satisfy any kind of craving.

In Oak Harbor, Seabolt’s Smokehouse, Fresh Seafood & Restaurant is a familyowned local favorite that’s served the community for 30 years. Located on Highway 20, the eatery is best known for its smoked salmon, but is also renowned for its clam chowder and fish and chips. It also offers custom smoking services to customers.

Oak Harbor is home to multiple quality Asian food digs, including Jeda’s Thai Kitchen. Come here to satisfy your craving for Thai curries, pad Thai and pad see ew.

The island’s wine and spirit makers are producing award-winning wine and smallbatch liquor that’s gaining in reputation among the more knowledgable noses of connoisseurs and critics.

The extensive farmland and marine temperate climate, particularly the South Whidbey microclimate, are ideal for growing white grapes that are usually associated with

the cooler parts of France’s Loire Valley and Alsace, Germany.

Whidbey Island is within the Puget Sound American Viticultural Area, the state’s third oldest designated grape growing region.

Whidbey’s vintners are located on South Whidbey while some of the numerous wine bars such as the Greenbank Farm Wine Shop, Vail and bayleaf in Coupeville and The Terrace Wine Bar in Oak Harbor offer tastes farther north.

Comforts of Whidbey has become a destination for people wanting to sleep, sip and dine in a tranquil setting. Comforts lives up to its name with a six-room bed and breakfast overlooking Puget Sound, vineyards, rolling pastures and an alpaca, llama and a few other farm critters. Weekends often feature live music.

Comforts is the first Whidbey winery to explore making sparkling wines, named Sparkling Siegerrebe and 2016 Sparkling High Tide White.

“At almost the same latitude as those grown in Champagne France, the grapes we grow here on Whidbey Island are typically higher in acid and lower in sugar — perfect for a sparkling wine,” explained Zach Comfort.

Spoiled Dog Winery owners Jack and Karen Krug perfected growing grapes for Pinot Noir after many years of exhaustive research. They found the varietal not only thrives in the island's cool climate but is helped by being in a rain shadow that receives considerably less rain than the surrounding Puget Sound area.

The Krugs also produce Pomo di Moro (apple of love), an apple pear wine made from the heritage fruit trees on the orchard of their 25-acre farm. The next generation, Jake and Lindsay Krug, are also making Driftwood Hard Cider, the first Whidbey winery to tap into Washington’s growing cider market.

Whidbey Island Winery offers crisp fragrant estate-grown whites and classic and unusual reds and whites from varieties grown in eastern Washington. Greg and Elizabeth Osenbach first planted grapes on Whidbey in 1986 and opened the winery doors in June of 1992 with 400 cases of wine. They now produce almost 10 times that amount to distribute throughout Washington state. Not as large as Whidbey’s other tasting rooms, a stop

at Whidbey Island Winery is an intimate experience in a gem of a verdant setting.

Freeland features two winery stops now that Blooms moved from Bayview Corner to a new spacious building across from the Island Athletic Club.

Blooms Winery & 5511 Bistro is big enough to produce and age its wine on the bottom floor while nearly 100 customers can be served food, wine and beer in a beautiful art-lined ballroom-size retail space upstairs.

Its full-service bistro serves lunch and dinner and many appetizers from the seasonal produce of locals farmers and shellfish harvesters.

“We want people to come here for the food as much as the wine,” Virginia Bloom said.

Dancing Fish Winery likes a Friday night with a little food, some wine and musicians tapping out their tunes in its historic dairy barn. On a cold winter night, the combination is sure to warm under the sky-high rafters. For weddings and other private events, it features overnight accommodations for six at the Vineyard House and there’s places to stroll and sit among rolling pastures, vineyards and gardens.

Dancing Fish grows more than 1000 vines of four primary varieties of grapes.

After spending some 20 years flying and training pilots at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Greg Martinez grounded himself with Holmes Harbor Cellars. He blends grapes grown from eastern Washington vineyards and produces his own label, one series is devoted to his aviator past.

Located up on a hill off Honeymoon Bay Road, tastings take place in the towering Tuscan-inspired building or on the lovely patio overlooking the bay.

An easy, and tasty, way to take in some of these small-family beverage businesses is during the annual Whidbey wine Valentines’ weekend tours.

Hosted by the Whidbey Island Vintners & Distillers Association, the Red Wine & Chocolate Tour is Feb 9-10 & 16-17.

Tickets $20 in advance, $25 same day.

The ticket gives you tastes at four wineries and two distilleries, located between Langley’s Comforts of Whidbey and Holmes Harbor Cellars just south of Greenbank Farm. Stops along the way are Spoiled Dog Winery, Whidbey Island Distillery, Blooms Winery and Mutiny Bay Distillery.

While the Greenbank Farm Wine Shop isn’t officially part of the tour, it usually treats wine tasters to Valentines’ chocolate and is a relaxing place to begin or end your day. Check out where one of Washington’s premiere wineries, Chateau Ste. Michelle, once produced and popularized Loganberry wine, Loganberry liqueur and a cabernet sauvignon-based port named Whidbey’s Washington Port.

The farm’s 100 acres of legendary Loganberry fields no longer bear the raspberry/blackberry hybrid. But the old dairy farm, built in 1904, is still piled high with wooden wine barrels above the wine shop.

“We sell wines from all the local wineries,” owner Hollie Swanson said while pouring a round of samples. “By far, our biggest seller is the Loganberry wine.”

RECREATION Don’t let the drizzle or gray skies keep you inside on Whidbey Island during the winter.

After a little bundling up, it’s the perfect season to go for a stroll and take in the wild side of Whidbey.

That often means becoming an active spectator, whether it be wildlife viewing, stormwatching or beachcombing.

One of the island’s most popular outdoor winter pastimes is birding, which can be at its best during the colder months.

The fall and winter migration period bring both an abundance and wide variety of birds to Whidbey from red-throated loons near Deception Pass to Great Blue Herons at Crockett Lake.

The best spots for birding on Whidbey are Crockett Lake, Deer Lagoon and the Crescent Harbor marshes. They are sites identified as “Important Birding Areas” by the National Audubon Society because of the pristine habitat.

Whidbey is located on the Pacific Flyway, a north-south migration path for birds. In the fall and winter, a variety of birds arrive from Alaska, British Columbia and other northern reaches.

Whidbey Island also receives birds from Eastern Washington and Idaho for the winter as well as those that come from higher elevations in the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges -- all with the common goal of fleeing the freeze.

Whidbey is home to a healthy population of bald eagles that will travel to rivers in search for spawning salmon but tend to return to the island during the winter months.

Other raptors, waterfowl and seabirds are common sights during winter.

The Whidbey Audubon Society participates in weekly birding field trips on the island through the winter and offers a monthly guided field trip.

One of the biggest winter-time attractions is the red-throated loon that can be seen near Deception Pass in December and January. Thousands of snow geese and trumpeter swans also frequent the river deltas around North Puget Sound during the late winter with some stopping over at Dugualla Bay on North Whidbey.

Birding is not the only activity that capitalizes on the island's scenic beauty during the winter.

Most of the island's state parks remain open for day use during winter, meaning

Hikers enjoy a walk along the bluff at Ebey's Landing. visitors may take beach strolls or hike the trails. The exception is Joseph Whidbey State Park, where the gate will be closed but can still be accessed by foot and enjoyed.

Want overnight camping? Deception Pass and Fort Casey state parks offer this opportunity during the winter.

Winter also is a time to visit typically crowded destinations in more solitude. State parks matching that description would be Deception Pass, Fort Casey, Fort Ebey and Ebey's Landing.

Hiking trails at South Whidbey, Fort Casey and Fort Ebey state parks remain open during the winter, but visitors should err on the side of caution during windy and stormy days, especially on wooded trails.

The trails at Fort Ebey are popular because they connect to the expansive Kettles Trails system in Central Whidbey.

Deception Pass State Park is the most visited state park, and for good reason. There are great winter-time hikes, such as Goose Rock, Lighthouse Point, Kiket Island and Dugualla. These lowland hikes range from an hour to three hours on mostly good terrain.

Of course, there are many stretches of public beaches to comb and explore.

Starting in the late fall, and sometimes stretching into December, the wind invites kiteboarders to Crockett Lake in Coupeville and Double Bluff Beach in Freeland.

Another opportunity to get out on the water is kayaking. The Whidbey Island Kayaking Company, based at the Langley Marina, is open year-round for kayak tours, weather permitting.

Whidbey also is home to four 18-hole golf courses and two 9-hole, par-3 courses.

The 18-hole courses open to the public are Whidbey Golf Club and Galley Golf Course in Oak Harbor and Holmes Harbor Golf Club in Freeland. Useless Bay Golf & Country Club is a private course in Langley.

The par-3 courses are Island Greens in Clinton and Lam’s Golf Links in Oak Harbor.

If wildlife viewing if part of your outdoor recreation pursuit, Whidbey has no shortage of blacktail deer. A can't-miss place to see them during the winter is Fort Casey State Park or nearby Camp Casey.

The best opportunity to spot a southern resident orca from Whidbey shores happens during the late fall and early winter. This generally occurs on the island’s west side as resident orcas pursue migrating salmon from October to late December.

Transient orcas show up year-round and it's possible, though more rare, to spot a humpback whale during the winter.

Whale watching trips begin in early March when gray whales start arriving in waters around Whidbey as they have for decades in search of ghost shrimp to feed on. This goes on for about two months before they continue their migration to Alaska.

Mystic Sea Charters starts its gray whale watching cruises March 1 out of Langley.

Deception Pass Tours also start March 1 out of Oak Harbor.

The best bet for fishing around Whidbey in the winter is blackmouth in Admiralty Inlet (Marine Area 9) in the late fall and winter. Whidbey offers limited hunting opportunities, though no high-powered rifles are allowed. Through the Whidbey Camano Land Trust, the Trillium Community Forest on South Whidbey offers a shortened deer season starting in October with some opportunities in November.

Oak Harbor’s Whidbey Playhouse Community Theater presents “THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER," Nov. 30-Dec. 16. Hilarious yet heartwarming, the tale involves the Three Wise Men, a ham, scared shepherds and six rowdy kids.

Whidbey Playhouse always puts on a spirited show with many pint-sized actors for its Christmas production.

A much more adult-themed play, Tennessee Williams’ “A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE” will be presented at Whidbey Playhouse Feb. 8-24.

Whidbey Center for the Arts in Langley is known for its eclectic choices of bands and solo performers. Like stocking stuffers, its holiday season schedule is a little of this, a little of that. Seattle’s six-piece swing band, GOOD COMPANY HOLIDAY CONCERT performs Dec. 16 along with local favorite, Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews on saxophone. The band plays a new old sound, Electro Swing, described as combining the era of illicit booze, jitterbugging flappers and underground speakeasies with today’s funky beats.

Jan. 5, ERIC TINGSTAD AND NANCY RUMBEL reprise. The Grammy Awardwinning duo blend Americana fingerstyle guitar, double reeds and the ocarina for a reminder of the redeeming power of music.

Bluegrass is back at WICA on Jan. 11.

John Jorgenson’s Bluegrass Band J2B2 previews its new album, “FROM THE CROW’S NEST” recorded at Sheryl Crow’s Home Studio. Jorgenson’s powerful mandolin and acoustic guitar work and lead vocals, join forces with band mates Herb Pedersen (banjo, guitar, vocals) former Nash Rambler and award-winning songwriter Jon Randall (guitar, vocals) and renowned bassist Mark Fain.

On Jan. 19, LEROY BELL brings his spirited mix of soul/funk/rhythm and blues to the WICA stage for the first time. He and his band had audiences up and dancing during two 2018 visits to Whidbey at the Bluesberry Blues Festival and the Oak Harbor Music Festival.

A multi-artist event called THE ROUND returns to WICA’s stage Jan. 26. Born from Seattle’s Fremont Abbey, it showcases musicians, songwriters, slam poets and a live painter on stage simultaneously.

The next night, Jan. 27, the stirring pieces of Beethoven and Rachmaninoff will be played by classical pianist ELEONORA KARPUKHOVA. The Moscow sensation rarely appears in the United States.

To shake people out of mid-winter doldrums, the Island Shakespeare Festival has

added a February component to its summer season. SHAKESPEARE’S OTHER WOMEN returns Feb. 8-23, featuring 36-heart-stopping soliloquies for women, including queens, wenches, goddesses and everything in between. Supposedly written by the Bard and discovered in a box in 1623, the feminist revue is written by Scott Kaiser of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Tickets sold out quickly in 2018.

Speaking of dames, WICA announced its new Whidbey Island Film Festival kicks off the inaugural season with “FEMME FATALES OF FILM NOIR.” Watch a marathon of movies Jan. 12-13, with such classics as: The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, The Killers and Gilda. It’s bound to be a two-day celebration of the bold, brash, and smart actresses that lit up movie screens in post-war America and offered generations of women an alternative model of femininity.

“The festival affords us the opportunity to help create another signature event for our community and a way to attract artists and audiences from far and wide,” said Deana Duncan, WICA’s artistic director.

An alternative form of womanhood appears regularly at “OFF THE HOOK” lounge in Oak Harbor with the island’s only drag show, Queens of the Island. The troupe is loud, proud, brash, bodacious and boldly dressed; expect at least five to six costume changes.

A regular drag event also takes place at the nearby Terrace Wine Bar and Bistro in Harborside Village Mall. DRAG ME TO BINGO! attracts about 50 people on the first and third Thursdays every month.

February and March put local talent under WICA’s spotlight.

On Feb. 12, the award-winning JAZZ BAND OF SOUTH WHIDBEY HIGH SCHOOL, under the guidance of Chris Harshman, take to the stage.

The first day of March features another young musician — the critically-acclaimed 15-year-old MARLEY ERICKSON. Known for her expressive musical style and technical virtuosity on the violin, she’s a top prize winner of both the Louis Spohr and Piccolo Violino International Violin Competitions and has appeared as a soloist with orchestras on both sides of the Atlantic.

On Whidbey Island, Marley studies piano and violin-piano collaboration with Mark Findlay who will join her on stage.

In March, a series of performances of the LOCAL ARTISTS SERIES are scheduled.

These presentations are made possible by an annual benefit Locals for Locals concert that raises money to cover the rental fees of

selected artists who may not otherwise be able to afford to appear on their home stage.

On March 2, at the VILLAGE BY THE SEA: STORYTELLING FESTIVAL, Global Village storyteller Jill Johnson will be bringing regional and nationally known storytellers to demonstrate their skills and give workshops.

LAKE, an experimental pop ensemble centered on the songwriting partnership of wife/husband duo Ashley Erickson and Elijah Moore, is scheduled March 15.

Alex Bonesteel will meld original electric violin music, poetry and artwork for a performance March 16, called CIRCLES: THE ALEX BONESTEEL EXPERIENCE. Each instrumental piece is paired with a poem and piece of art that weaves together life, death and rebirth.

The following week, it’s a dance party with the South Whidbey band, WIND & RAIN. Russell Sparkman, Keith Boyd, Caven Keith, Evan Callahan, Piper Reva and Scott Small play a range of Americana music blending country, folk, blues and rock ranging from pre-WW II standards to contemporary tunes. Dancing shoes suggested for the March 23 show and “old timey” costume attire encouraged.
