Saturday, Dec. 1 Stuff the Bus, presented by U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for Tots Program, Port Townsend Kiwanis Club and Jefferson Transit, will collect donations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in a Jefferson Transit bus parked at 2409 Jefferson St. The public is encouraged to drop off an unopened and unwrapped toy or a monetary donation.

Saturday, Dec. 1 First Saturday Art Walk will be hosted in galleries and stores from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Port Townsend.

Gifts will be available that you won’t find elsewhere.

Saturday, Dec. 1 Main Street Treelighting Celebration and Santa Visit offers an array of activities including caroling in the streets with the Wild Rose Chorale from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and in-store refreshments.

Many shops will be open later than usual.

Come to Haller Fountain, at the intersection of Washington and Taylor streets, for the annual community treelighting and Santa visit at 4:30 p.m.

Santa will arrive by the Kiwanis Choo-Choo Train to light the community tree.

After lighting the tree, Santa visits with children at the Cotton Building, 607 Water St. Saturday, Dec. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 15 Main Street/Kiwanis Choo-Choo Rides for Families, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; suggested donation of $5

per person benefits the arts in the schools program.

Meet at Pope Marine Park (on Water Street between Madison and Monroe streets).

Saturday, Dec. 15 Holiday Open Parlor Tours, presented by Olympic Peninsula Steam, will take place between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at a variety of Port Townsend locations.

Tour beautifully decorated historical buildings and homes with historically costumed docents, seasonal music and holiday treats.

Reservations recommended.

Tickets also may be purchased at the first stop on the self-guided tour.

Tickets cost $15 per person.

Big Brass Yule Ball, coordinated by Olympic Peninsula Steam, will take place between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 209 Monroe St. The evening will feature Olympic Express Big Band.

Photos with Santa, public viewing of gingerbread houses, decorated trees and wreaths, musical entertainers and children’s activities are included in the event.

Cost is $7 per person; kids younger than 12 are free.

Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1 Port Angeles Library’s annual Holiday Bazaar will be held at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. Hours both days are from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will include a selection of Christmas gift baskets, a “toyland” for children, baked goods, wreaths and fully decorated Christmas trees for sale.

All proceeds from the bazaar benefit the library’s children and adult programs.

Guest performers will include Ava Peterson, a 10-year-old soloist, and John Zuerner on oboe.

Again this year, the Sequim Community Christmas Chorus will make a donation from proceeds to this program that introduces elementary school children to music.

Holiday celebrants employ holiday lights in a variety of ways.

Certain individuals might be content to hang lights on their Christmas trees and call their decorating complete.

Others might make sure each square inch of their home is covered in twinkling lights.

Still, other people prefer the more subdued effect of lights framing one picture window of the house.

The tradition of Christmas lights stretches back to early modern Germany when people used candles to decorate Christmas trees in Christian homes. The candles were harbingers of what would come when electric lights replaced gas and other open flame illuminating devices that were commonplace prior to the 20th century.

Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, also created the first strand of electric lights that would be used in holiday decorating.

By 1880, Edison had standard incandescent light bulbs well sorted out and desired a way to better advertise his invention, so he decided to make the most of the holiday season and put his light bulbs on display.

According to a 2003 article in American Heritage magazine titled “The Wizard of Your Christmas Tree,” Edison strung incandescent bulbs all around the compound of his Menlo Park, N.J., laboratory.

Edison constructed an 8-mile underground wiring system to power this grand light display. Because the laboratory was situated along the railroad that passed between Manhattan and Philadelphia, thousands of people were able to see the display.

The concept of electric holiday lights took a bit of time to catch on.

Edison’s friend and associate Edward Johnson was tasked with stringing together colored lights in 1882 and

placing them on an evergreen tree. Johnson hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs.

In 1895, President Grover Cleveland requested the White House family Christmas tree be illuminated by multi-colored electric light bulbs.

In 1903, when General Electric began to offer preassembled kits of holiday lights, stringed lights were reserved for the wealthy and electrically savvy.

For example, in 1903 a single string of electric lights cost $12, or around $300 today.

It would take several more years before holiday lights became a national tradition.

On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the country’s celebration of Christmas by lighting the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse, located south of the White House, with 3,000 electric lights.

Today, illuminated strands of lights have become a large part of holiday celebrations and have even been adopted for use during various year-round events.

Such lights can be a beautiful and festive addition to many celebrations.

The many benefits of buying local this holiday season

Holiday shopping dominates many people’s free time between the day after Thanksgiving and the final days before Christmas.

While many people might shop ‘til they drop on Black Friday, this day only accounts for a relatively small amount of the hundreds of billions of dollars that are spent each holiday season.

Shoppers now have a bevy of options at their disposal as they embark on the holiday shopping season.

Traditional in-store retailers are still around, and online shopping continues to grow in popularity with each holiday season.

But many holiday shoppers are looking to buy local this holiday season, and such a decision can pay a host of dividends for both shoppers and the communities they call home.

Buying local benefits your economy

Studies from Civic Economics, an economics and strategics planning firm, found that independent, locallyowned retailers return a greater percentage of their revenue into their local economies than national chain stores.

The study showed independent, locally owned businesses on average recirculated 51.1 percent of revenue into the local economy, while national chains recirculated less than 14 percent.

Similar results were discovered in a variety of cities, indicating that buying local not only benefits local business owners but also the communities those owners and their customers call home.

“About 80 cents of every dollar spent locally stays local, supporting everything in our community that we all hold important and dear — from sports and music programs, to better roads, first responder services, medical facilities, libraries and education,” said Marc Abshire, executive director, Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce.

“The opposite is true, of course: 100 percent of every dollar spent online or in another community, state or country will stay exactly out there and result in zero benefit to Port Angeles.

“Every time you make a retail purchase, somebody benefits. Wouldn’t it be better to spend your dollars in ways that benefit your own community, not just because it feels better but because your purchase means you are also benefiting your own community, rather than someone else’s community?”

Buying from national chains has its advantages, but customer service is not always one of them.

Should your loved ones encounter problems with their gift that requires assistance, they might be forced to wait on the phone for extended periods of time as they and thousands of others wait for customer service representatives to answer their calls.

Local businesses do not deal with nearly the volume of customers as national retailers and, therefore, are capable of addressing concerns more quickly and personally than large chains.

PERMIT INFORMATION

• Cut one tree per permit.

• A maximum of five permits are available to a household.

• Permits are not refundable.

• Tree cutting is prohibited in wildernesses areas, developed campgrounds, administrative sites, within 300 feet of streams, on private or state-owned lands within national forest boundaries and in other posted areas.

• Olympic National Forest Christmas tree permits are not valid on other land ownerships.

• Cutting on private land is subject to trespass action.

• Every fourth-grader can receive a free Christmas tree cutting permit through Olympic National Forest’s Every Kid in a Park Initiative.

The initiative offers one free holiday tree permit to youth that have a valid “4th Grade Interagency Pass.”

These free permits are only available at U.S. Forest Service district offices.

SAFETY TIPS • Let someone know where you are going and when to

expect you back.

• Be prepared for cold and changing winter weather conditions.

• Carry tire chains, a shovel, flashlights and a blanket in your vehicle.

• Bring extra food, water and hot beverages.

‘Hand up, not a handout’ Peninsula Home Fund offers a chance to help your neighbors in need Donations from annual campaign stay on the Olympic Peninsula

Sometimes it’s the little things that loom the largest.

Your budget’s tight but you’re making it — barely — and then an unexpected car repair leaves you short on the rent.

You’re proud of making your available cash stretch to cover school clothes and supplies for your children — and then one loses the glasses that are essential for him to read and keep up with schoolwork.

You got that job — but now you lack appropriate work clothes or a bus pass to get to work.

What do you do?

On the Olympic Peninsula, generous residents create a safety net for their neighbors, donating what they can to the Peninsula Daily News’ “hand up, not a handout” Peninsula Home Fund.

Donations collected by the PDN benefit Olympic Community Action Programs (OlyCAP), the No. 1 emergency-care agency in Clallam and Jefferson counties, where case workers screen applicants and carefully distribute the funds.

The annual campaign starts Thanksgiving Day and will include weekly feature stories in the PDN about area residents who have been helped by the Peninsula Home Fund, donor contribution lists and more.

Peninsula Home Fund has been an annual tradition for 30 years.

$218,004 to the Peninsula Home Fund during the 2017 campaign.

The funds have allowed OlyCAP to help thousands of area residents this year with a variety of needs that otherwise might have not been met.

All of the donors join the PDN in delivering hope to thousands of individuals and families, many with young children, who suddenly face an emergency situation and can’t find help elsewhere.

Everyone who donates — whether it be $1 or $1,000 — is a Home Fund partner who is helping forge a stronger Peninsula community.

Since its beginning in 1989, the Home Fund has distributed more than $3.48 million to help those in need on the Peninsula.

Contributions are fully IRS tax-deductible. 100 percent of your caring donation goes to Olympic Community Action Programs to help children, seniors and families in Clallam and Jefferson Counties. Written acknowledgment will be mailed to donors by Jan. 31, 2019.

The money goes to help the most vulnerable members of our community, from infants to families to seniors.

Please note: Due to substantial community demands, the loss of grants from recent cuts in government funding and the status of the economy, OlyCAP was permitted to use 10 percent — 10 cents of every dollar donated — to pay for the vital programs and services for Home Fund clients.

This standing began in 2012 and continues today.

OlyCAP has kept it in the area of 8 percent to 10 percent, a fraction of the average overhead of other nonprofits.

• The Home Fund is not a welfare program.

Money is used to give families and individuals from Port Townsend to Forks, from Quilcene and Brinnon to Sequim, Joyce and La Push “a hand up, not a handout” to get through an emergency situation.

Assistance is limited to one time in a 12-month period per person.

The average amount of help this year has been $129 per person. The fund has served 1,087 individuals since Jan. 1.

Money from the fund is used for hot meals for seniors in Jefferson and Clallam counties; warm winter coats for kids; home repairs for a low-income family; needed prescription drugs; dental work; help with evictions and deposits for moving into permanent housing; eyeglasses — the list goes on and on.

All instances of help are designed to get an individual or family through a crisis and back to self-sufficiency.

Home Fund case managers often work with each individual or family to develop a plan to become financially stable and avoid a recurrence of the emergency that prompted aid from the fund.

As needed, Peninsula Home Fund contributions are often used in conjunction with money from churches, service clubs and other donors, enabling OlyCAP to stretch the value of the contribution.

The goal again: “a hand up, not a handout.”

• All contributions are IRS tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law for the year in which the check is written.

Since its beginning, the fund has relied on the support of Jefferson and Clallam county residents.

As of Sept. 30, $153,393 has been spent for Home Fund grants. And as we move into winter — the toughest period of the year — all of the remaining money — $64,611 — is expected to be spent by mid-January.
