Central Whidbey is a special place to celebrate the holidays.

The communities of Coupeville and Greenbank have no shortage of fun events. With gingerbread workshops, visits from Santa, tree lightings and more, the communities offer activities just about every weekend between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

tion. The candy masterpieces will be on display at Coupeville Library and votes on the best one will be accepted until Christmas. Prizes will be awarded later in the holiday season.

"We work pretty hard to create an atmosphere that encourages people who live on the island to shop local," Vickie Chambers, executive director of the Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association, said.

"Especially in Central Whidbey, we don't have big or chain stores so it all is dependent on locals shopping here.

So to help that, we try and create an atmosphere downtown that's fun and festive."

Jingle Trail 5K Run/Walk Greening of Coupeville Chocolate Walk

activities including the Jingle Trail Run, Saratoga Orchestra performance, church bazaars and art shows. Santa makes many appearances throughout the season, including during the greening parade. He leads the annual procession through town atop a lighted fire truck.

After the parade, the community gathers at Cook Corner Park for caroling and a tree lighting.

In Coupeville, there are variety of Front Street businesses that carry a little bit of everything. To bring home a gift that’ll remind someone of island life, walk down to stores like Penn Cove Gallery where many of the artists featured capture the area’s beauty. Visit Whidbey Island Yarn, Gifts and Teas for hand-spun and dyed yarn produced by animals on Whidbey Island. Or, pick up an already-completed gift using that yarn like a hat or scarf to keep your loved one warm this winter.

At Aqua Gifts, you can find all types of presents. Inside the store has a collection of jewel-

ry, textiles, cards, toiletries and more. Many of the items in the store are handmade.

One of downtown’s more recent businesses is Posh Upscale Resale. Think elegance, style and affordability. Similarly, the Handbag Consignment Shop is a place where visitors can purchase high-end designer purses.

A Touch of Dutch has been in business for over 20 years and offers Dutch-themed items and more, including candy,

licorice, breads and spreads.

Back to the Island sells clothes and novelties popular both with tourists and locals.

Collections Boutique is located adjacent to the Coupeville wharf and sells women's apparel, jewelry accessories and baby gifts for your young gift recipients.

A whimsical, "far from normal" store, Far from Normal is the aptly-named novelty toy store for unique gifts. Its horse-head "mascot" is frequently seen around the store.

Nuts for nuts this year

Snacking is as much a holiday tradition as turkey, tree lights, parties and shopping.

Those heaping plates of treats rarely provide healthy options, but few people complain – at least not until the New Year, when they realize they gained a few extra pounds.

Actually, though, a healthy holiday alternative might have been there all along, just ignored because of the more enticing sugary treats surrounding it. Many snack trays include healthy nuts of various kinds, but data shows that the typical American is more apt to reach for cookies, candy and chips.

Nuts often play second fiddle to less nutritious snacks, despite studies going back to the 1990s linking them to positive health outcomes – from lower cholesterol and blood pressure to reduced risk of cardiovascular problems.

Maybe this year, though, is the time to put that nutcracker to good use, Dr. Earl L. Mindell, an internationallyrecognized expert on nutrition, vitamins and herbal remedies, said. The holidays are prime time for people to gain an awareness of the health benefits of nuts.

“Many of us love pecan pie, especially during the holidays,” said Mindell, a spokesman for Primavera brand walnuts. “But eaten separately throughout the year, as is the case with almonds, chestnuts, walnuts and other tree nuts, they’ll significantly change your diet for the better.”

Mindell said the following four nuts offer many health plusses (and make great stocking stuffers): n Almonds. These are loaded with antioxidants – which have been found to help protect against inflammation, aging, heart disease and can-

cer – and vitamin E. Several studies have linked higher vitamin E intake with lower rates of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

“Also, high amounts of magnesium in almonds can help lower blood sugar levels,” Mindell said. “Many people don’t get enough magnesium.” n Chestnuts. The Christmas Song begins, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,” but many may forget about chestnuts once the holidays pass. If you’re worried about picking up an extra five or more pounds from Thanksgiving through January – as many Americans do – this could be your nut.

“It’s low in fat,” Mindell said, “and a good source of magnesium, protein, vitamin E and dietary fiber, which you need for colon health.” n Pecans. This is another nut high in antioxidants, fiber, and healthy fats, which help lower cholesterol. Of particular interest to men, the betasitosterol in pecans has been shown to be helpful to prostate health. “They’re also rich in several B-complex groups of vitamins, which help increase the rate of metabolism, so it could help in losing weight,” Mindell said. n Walnuts. These have the highest content of antioxidants of any nut. Walnuts are also a good source of heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats, including plant-based omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3 oils have been shown to raise serotonin levels in the brain, so there’s a school of thought that consistent walnut consumption can ward off depression.” Walnuts are one of those treats you might only think about during the holidays, and that’s a shame,” Mindell said. “They’re full of amazing stuff.”

“We all should be eating more nuts,” Mindell said.

The air is cooler and the days may be shorter but spirits are bright on North Whidbey.

On Nov. 30, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County will be hosting its 20th Annual FESTIVAL OF TREES gala at the Elks Lodge. There will be several large trees, smaller table-top trees and garlands available for auction. Proceeds from the evening go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County.

The next day, the organization will also host the TEDDY BEAR AND CHARACTER BREAKFAST at the same

venue. This event, sponsored

by Alaskan USA Mortgage, will feature a raffle. Tickets for children under 10 are $5 and $15 for everyone else. Participants are asked to bring a new stuffed

animal to donate to a child in a crisis situation. Tickets are available at www.bbbsislandcounty.org Starting at 4 p.m., the Oak Harbor Main Street Association will be hosting its HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS event downtown. There will be carolers, musicians and treats available to the community. As always, Santa will be arriving to the scene via pirate ship. Some businesses downtown will stay open later so attendees can get a start on their gift shopping.

The HOLIDAY MARKET, featuring local goods, will be happening every weekend until Dec. 18 at 749 SE Pioneer Way. People strolling along Pioneer might also notice the toy soldiers lining the street.

The Main

Street Association is hosting its ADOPT A TOY SOLDIER event. People can vote for their favorite decorated toy solider until Dec 21. A portion of the proceeds from “adoption” will support Toys for Tots.

Supporting local businesses while gift shopping could prove even more beneficial for some lucky shopper. Until Dec. 21, patrons at participating merchants can earn a “green ticket” for every $20 spent. Tickets will be drawn on Dec. 22 at Harborside Village for a chance to win a $1,000 cash prize. Showtimes can be found at www.whidbeyplayhouse.com Those looking for a more traditional holiday experience can head north of the city and sign up for horse wagon rides, every weekend through Christmas Eve at A Knot in Thyme. Visitors will be carried by strong draft horses through the farm, where visitors can pick a tree and sing with carolers. In downtown Oak Harbor, the Garry Oak Gallery showcases an ever-changing range of artwork made by Whidbey artists. Shoppers may find paintings in different media, photography, glasswork, pottery, jewelry and wood pieces.

The gallery is located in the Harborside Shops building.

Many other shops also line Pioneer Way. Weathered Wares offers affordable “shabby chic” furniture and decor.

Frida’s A Beautiful Mess has art supplies, gifts and home decor. Just Because also offers unique and interesting decor, gifts and accessories. Red’s Boutique has a selection of

lies the Ishler Pottery Studio.

Three Sisters Market is located farther south in the San de Fuca area. It’s owned by a fifth-generation Whidbey farm family that raises grassfed beef, pork and cage-free eggs. The holiday season on South Whidbey features a two-block parade, beautifully-crafted decorations, holiday markets, giveaways and giving to those in need. Here’s just a few events happening up until New Year’s Eve.

LANGLEY

Although it has more sand than snow, somehow this seaside hamlet creates an old-fashioned Christmas season emulating the days of yore. Think Bedford Falls, the fictional, quaint town in the movie, “It’s A Wonderful Life,” but with crisp marine air instead of fake blustery snow blowing about.

Catch a quirky and memorable play as Whidbey Island Center for the Arts presents "OWEN MEANY'S

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT." The show, adapted from the novel A Prayer for Owen Meany, runs Fridays through Sundays from Nov. 30 to Dec. 15. Tickets are $22 for adults, $15 for youth, $18 for seniors and military and Sunday matinees are $15. More information can be found at www. wicaonline.org THE HOLLY JOLLY HOLIDAY Parade begins at 1 p.m. on Dec. 1. The annual parade includes musicians, service and youth groups, pets, families and many others.

Later that afternoon, SHOP & STROLL begins at 5 p.m. when Langley’s First Saturday Art Walk takes place. Stroll between the many galleries, which often debut new exhibits with the artist on hand to meet. Shops will be open late that evening.

San Juan Clipper is again making weekend cruises from Seattle to Langley every Saturday and Sunday, starting Dec. 1. Passengers have five hours to take in Langley’s Christmas by the Sea, to shop, explore and sample local food, beer and wine.

“THE GIVING TREE” will return to Bayview and Freeland for the 15th year in a row. Actually two trees set-up in two locations, the fundraiser is sponsored by non-profit organization Goosefoot.

The tradition of the Giving Tree brings neighbors together to build a sense of place and community, preserve rural traditions, enhance local commerce and help create a sustainable future for South Whidbey, said Sami Postma, events and education coordinator for Goosefoot.

The trees will be on display at The Bayview Cash Store, 5603 Bayview Road, right off Highway 525 near the corner of Bayview Road and Marshview Avenue, and at Island Athletic Club at 5522 Freeland Ave. in Freeland, also off Highway 525. The trees are on display from Nov. 30 to Dec. 31.

THE HOLIDAY MARKET at Bayview Corner will be open for four Saturdays during November and December.

The market, held at the Bayview Farmers Market off Highway 525 at Bayview Road, is on Dec. 1, Dec. 8 and Dec. 15.

Shopping for the holidays on Whidbey Island is a treat for those who love to peruse artisan craft far from the maddening crowd.

Instead of shopping malls, there’s a variety of independently owned shops with original works in every nook and cranny.

South Whidbey’s selection of one-of-a-kind gifts is expansive because of the hundreds of talented crafters, artists, artisans and manufacturers who call the island home.

Right off the ferry in Clinton on Highway 525, look for an old storefront marked MAKE Whidbey. Described as a “little shop of Whidbey makers,” the store blends handmade home decor with wooden crafts as

well as soaps, candles and other original goods. Its filled with the finely crafted cutting boards, clocks and carafes made by store owner Janae Cameron and her husband, under their Turnco Wood Goods label.

Nearby, Abundant Earth Fiber is an independent textile mill that churns out small batches of naturally-dyed yarn, perfect for the knitter on your list. A small storefront at the mill sells yarn, batts, tincture dyes, tools and kits. If you hear the low hum of two industrial textile machines, it means that owner Lydia Christiansen and her crew are in the middle of their “farm to yarn” magic.

The city of Langley, population, 1,124 or so, is Whidbey’s artsy epicenter. Its tiny, charming downtown is jammedpacked with small speciality
