Letterpress company thrives in Bremerton Bockelie opened her storefront in 2015 BY GABE STUTMAN GSTUTMAN@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

B

remerton Letterpress Co. started out in Marit Bockelie’s garage in 2012.

With a growing customer base, Bockelie wanted to contribute to Bremerton’s developing downtown core and explore the world of retail. She opened her current storefront on Pacific Avenue in downtown Bremerton in 2015.

Bockelie’s shop has two full-sized, midcentury letterpresses, one antique newspaper-proofing press and one standing digital printer. The store is staffed by Bockelie and one employee, and offers handmade greeting cards, business cards and invitations, as well as digital printing, banner-making and a host of other services. What drew you to the printing business? I am a left-brain, right-brain thinker. Printing, graphic design – and letterpress in particular – is great for someone who thinks on both sides of the brain – creative, and also very detail-oriented. It’s kind of a perfect balance for me. What’s your educational background? I have a journalism degree, actually, and an urban planning degree from UW. I worked as a city planner for a while until the recession hit, in the city of Seattle and the city of Kent. When the recession hit I went back to school. I’d already been a hobby printer, so letterpress was already part of my life. There were some gaps in what I could do, so I went back to school and got a graphic design certificate at O.C. I was able to learn new software skills – combined new-school graphic design and old-school printing.

Marit Bockelie started Bremerton Letterpress Co. in her garage. At that time I was specializing in wedding invitations and business cards, so kind of smaller-run, specialty, boutique printing. You recently spoke at a Bremerton City Council meeting about how your

business had grown significantly since 2012. It started out as a gift shop and specialty store, and has evolved into a print shop with commercial customers. How did that transformation happen? Continued on page 3

I was printing out of my garage, and people were drawn to the printing press – the way it works, and they wanted to see it. So customers would come in. And as a former urban planner, I really care about the growth of our downtown and revitalization of the downtown corridor for Bremerton in particular, because I’m from here. So I really saw a value in what I was doing – contributing to the vitality of this little downtown neighborhood. I live downtown, too, and there are all these empty storefronts.I really wanted that interaction, where not only would I be drawing people into my business, but I’d be contributing somehow to the energy on the street. So having a storefront was really important to me. Some people say that we’re either in,

or moving toward, a paperless world. Is print dead?

So that’s what I love about print not being dead.

Well, there’s definitely a shift to digital. But as that shift heightens, there’s the backlash that everybody talks about.

Are the things that drew you to this business still the same things you find yourself engaged with on a daily basis?

It’s evolved, for sure. I was never interested in business – when I went to school I didn’t “Find mentors. That’s take any business classes. I been a huge key for ended up doing that later. But me,” business is a very – there’s a – Marit Bockelie lot of moving parts to it, so it keeps me on my toes and I’m really drawn to that part of it, which I didn’t expect to be. And letterpress has that It has to be more than just a deep impression. It’s usually hobby craft to keep the doors on really nice paper. When you open. So that part’s been realhand someone one of our busily fun, just kind of figuring that out. ness cards, they sit and hold it, look at it, feel it. There’s that moment of connection. People want not only faceto-face interaction, but just the tactile feel of print – handing over a business card, writing a letter on letterhead or sending a greeting card. What I Iove about it is that people really want that tactile feel of print itself.

Find mentors. That’s been a huge key for me, is finding people, even if it’s just one aspect of what they do that you’re drawn to. Take them to lunch, ask them a million questions. Let them know that you have a lot of respect for what they’re doing, so that they’ll want to share their time with you. And just be really, really curious – with mentors, taking classes and what not. Being able to say ‘I don’t know’ something, and therefore I want to go and find that knowledge, or information, instead of pretending like you have it all figured out, is a really big part of running a small business.

Since Kim opened Kim McCall Design in 2005 she has emerged as one the island’s favorite designers.

In 2018 she was voted Best of Bainbridge for Interior Design based on numerous successful remodels, and continues to stage homes for many of the island’s top real estate agents. But according to Kim, the foundation of her practice is you: “I consider a project successful when you get what you want. Ashley Mathews lives and breathes Marketing and Advertising and has enjoyed a long career doing exactly what she loves to do. She moved to Bainbridge Island from NYC ten years ago where she was the Marketing Director of one of the largest dealer groups in the Country and was often referred to as the Digital Diva. These days Ashley is proud to be the Marketing Coordinator at Coldwell Banker Bain’s Bainbridge Island Branch. She loves to give back to her Community as well and has served on the BIMA Bash Auction planning committee, sings with the Bainbridge Chorale and has graced the stage of BPA in Chicago and Cats. Ashley was elected to the Board of Directors of Treehouse for Kids in September and also serves on their Marketing Committee. She also is a current member of Bainbridge Island Museum of Art’s Marketing Committee. She spends her free time with her family, friends and two Dobermans and enjoys being part of the Island’s close-knit equestrian community.

Julie first decided to pursue grooming in 2004, when she did some volunteer work at an animal shelter. It was at that time she realized how much she enjoyed spending hours on end around dogs. lass ceilings, glass cliffs, glass escalators … much has been written about the metaphorical glass barrier that stands invisibly yet solidly between women and high-level success across the economy. It’s a description that exasperates Professor Sucheta Nadkarni from Cambridge Judge Business School. “The challenges faced by women in busi-

I call this the doom and gloom narrative – it’s about the barriers that women face and why women fail. Let’s change the conversation about gender equality to focus on the factors that help women to succeed.” Nadkarni is the lead academic on a major global research project that reported in the European Business Review last year on the factors that help women to succeed in corporate environments. The project gathered data from 1,071 companies in 42 countries, covering 56 industries. The information spanned a 10-year period, during which the

average percentage of women on executive teams in sampled firms rose from 7.6 percent to just 11.7 percent. The study highlighted the many benefits that women in senior roles bring to companies. “It’s not just that hiring more women into senior positions is the right thing to do for gender equality, it’s also the smart thing to do from a business perspective,” says Nadkarni. “We found that bringing more women to top roles can make a business function better, attract new customers and improve the bottom line. Women bring in diverse capabilities, diverse knowledge and new ways of thinking, which organizations

Maternity provisions and female politicians providing a championing voice for women are also important factors. The research also uncovered some of the loopholes that companies exploit to meet quota requirements. For example, in countries where family businesses are common, quotas are sometimes fulfilled by appointing female relatives to the board. “There are two kinds of people, those who do the work and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group; there is less competition there.” - Indira Gandhi Though Liz has lost most of her Southern accent she hasn’t lost her Southern charm. Compassion and understanding has been her upbringing and she carries that into her business every day. Treating every client as a member of her family, and with a strong sense of making sure they are taken care of, she started her own business built on what she wanted in an agent.

Liz Vaughn

By combining the reputation of Farmers Insurance and her own down home personal touch she is able to create an environment that cares for her clients as if they are family.

The soul of my business with Johnson Financial Services is family and community. It is my goal to protect both. We don’t sell insurance to be cheaper or faster. We sell insurance to protect our families and the families of our community. It is our goal to protect each and every person. We don’t sell based solely on price, because often that results in customers being under-insured. We insure based on need. I truly care about each and every person that I insure. I have been in the insurance industry for 33 years, and today I’m honored to own my own Allstate Insurance agency. I’m honored to have a staff that shares my ideals of putting customer’s needs first. Our staff is a FAMILY; we often spend time together outside of the office, forming a tight bond that makes working together for you a joy.
