What does this have to do with profanity?

If we are being mindful and incorporating sign language in our everyday conversations with our children, it can help eliminate casual profanity, which is a poor way to communicate.

But taking those deep breaths and focusing on what you actually mean to say will help both you and your child feel less frustrated.

The hardest part seems to be having the peace of mind to remember these tips.

New season, new adventures at area libraries

The seasonal change is upon us and with it a time to enjoy indoor, as well as outdoor, activities.

Fall is a wonderful time to revel in the smell of fresh rain-washed air, marvel at the colors of the deciduous trees, energize with a brisk walk, and delight in the simple act of coming inside.

No matter where your family spends the bulk of their time, the North Olympic Library System (NOLS) has just what is needed to make your day more enjoyable.

If you’re planning an outside adventure, consider checking out an Explore Olympic Day Pack that includes a pass to Olympic National Park, or perhaps a Birding Kit, that includes identification guide books, audio bird song CDs and binoculars.

Of course, there’s always the pure joy that comes with playing with walkie-talkies, whether outdoors or indoors.

All of these items are simply a library card away!

Hopefully, you’ll return home after your outdoor adventure with some special treasures that seem to have found their way into pockets large and small.

Area libraries also have some wonderful books that will offer ways to incorporate nature-found treasures into keepsakes.

“Nature Crafts for Kids” by Gwen Diehn and Terry Krautwurst is a book that contains wonderful ideas for a wide range of ages and seasons. Projects are fun, instructional and varied.

If keepsakes aren’t the order of the day, there also are several books that will offer kitchen-safe scientific experiments to explore the treasures in more depth.

“A Little Bit of Dirt” by Asia Citro incorporates nature in science and art activities. The projects are accessible, give good prompts and clear directions, and help kids

Handwashing:

A healthy future is in your hands

Hands play a major role in the spread of germs.

Unwashed hands can contaminate food and drink during harvest, preparation or serving, leading to gastrointestinal and other illnesses in those who consume them.

Unwashed hands (as well as uncovered coughs and sneezes) can contaminate inanimate objects, such as handrails, table tops and toys.

When others then touch these items, their hands can transfer the germs to their eyes, noses and mouths where the germs can enter the body and again cause illness.

“Handwashing is probably one of the most underrated things we can do to keep ourselves and the people around us healthy,” said Clallam County Health Officer Dr. Allison Berry Unthank.

Autumn leaves: Garden gold (and orange, red and purple)

As the days grow shorter and the nights grow cooler, autumn leaves provide a colorful farewell to the growing season.

The mélange of golds, oranges, reds and purples are a visual sensation. But did you know that fall leaves can enrich your life (and garden) beyond the colorful images they provide?

Here are eight great ways to use the leaves that fall from your deciduous trees and shrubs this year.

1. ADD LEAVES TO YOUR COMPOST PILE

Shredded leaves, along with twigs, chopped up branches, shredded paper and wood chips, are a good source of carbon (“brown materials”) for your compost pile.

When combined with “green materials” (sources of nitrogen) such as garden annuals, grass clippings or manure, the mixture is broken down by microbes to produce a humus-rich compost that will improve the nutrient value and texture of any soil to which it is added.

A brown to green ratio of 3-to-1 will work well. Make sure to chop or shred the larger pieces and moisten dry materials as they are added.

2. COOK UP A LASAGNA GARDEN BED

Lasagna gardening is a no-dig, no-till method of creating a garden bed, sometimes referred to as “compostingin-place.”

Similar to regular composting, a lasagna garden bed is made by layering carbon rich “brown” materials with nitrogen rich “green” materials. But instead of creating a

As autumn takes hold on the Olympic Peninsula, many residents are wondering what they should do with all the leaves falling off their trees. A local Master Gardener shares a few ideas about how to use leaves to benefit gardens and more.

compost pile, you build a lasagna bed right where you are going to plant and let it “cook down” in place.

Start with a layer of corrugated cardboard to smother any grass or annual weeds. Alternate layers of “brown” material with layers of “green” material (again in a ratio of 3-to-1) to reach a height of about 2 feet.

Let the materials decompose over the winter. With a little luck, your lasagna bed will be ready for planting in the spring.

3. WORK THE LEAVES DIRECTLY INTO FALLOW GARDEN BEDS

A 6- to 8-inch layer of leaves tilled into heavy, clay soil will improve aeration and drainage. The same amount tilled into a light, sandy soil will improve water and nutrient holding capacity.

Although the decomposition process temporarily ties up nitrogen from the soil, incorporating the leaves in the fall will allow sufficient time for them to break down and return most of the nitrogen to the soil prior to spring planting.

4. FERTILIZE YOUR LAWN

Instead of raking leaves off your lawn, chop them up with your lawn mower and let them compost (or should we say “lawnpost”) in place to enhance the soil beneath your lawn.

Because smaller pieces decompose faster, aim for dimesized pieces. Depending on the size and depth of the leaves, you might need to mow over them several times.

Mowing works best if the leaves are dry and no more than 1 inch deep.

5. MULCH BARE SOIL

Leaves make excellent organic mulch that will protect your soil from erosion over the winter, suppress weeds and eventually decompose to enrich the soil.

Apply 2 to 6 inches of leaves to the bare areas in your garden. If the leaves are large, shred them with your lawnmower to prevent them from forming a solid mat that can inhibit air and water from getting to the soil. >> AUTUMN LEAVES continued on Page 9

Because the shredded leaves can blow away, hose them down when you first spread them or sprinkle them with a little garden soil to hold them in place.

6. USE THE LEAVES TO INSULATE MORE DELICATE PERENNIALS

A 6-inch blanket of leaves can protect more tender plants from winter wind and cold. It also can prevent frost heaving of plants caused by thawing and refreezing of the soil.

Avoid applying the leaves until after the first hard frost; otherwise, the resulting warmth might fool your plants into thinking it is spring already.

Do not pile leaves onto trunks of trees; wet leaves can foster wood rot and injure the plants you are trying to protect.

In the spring, rake the leaves and toss them in the compost pile or let them break down in place.

7. HAUL THE LEAVES TO A COUNTY FACILITY FOR COMPOSING

Both Clallam and Jefferson counties have facilities that produce compost from biosolids combined with yard wastes. A hot method of composting is used that kills most weed seeds and agents that cause plant diseases.

In Clallam County, the composting facility is at 3501 W. 18th St. in Port Angeles and is open Mondays through Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except for county holidays).

In Jefferson County, the composting facility is at 325 County Landfill Road in Port Townsend and is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (except county holidays).

Curbside collection is another way to transport leaves to composting facilities. Yard waste must be put in separate, specially marked yard waste carts. Check with your trash pick-up service provider for details.

Fall leaf don’ts

• Don’t leave fallen leaves on your grass.

They can smother it, blocking sunlight and limiting air circulation, and keep it excessively moist. These conditions will increase the occurrence of lawn diseases.

• Don’t burn the leaves.

Leaf burning leads to air pollution, health problems and fire hazards. In Washington, burning of yard waste is illegal in urban growth areas.

• Don’t bag the leaves and put them out for regular trash pickup.

Bagged leaves will go into the landfill and be a waste of this valuable material.

• Don’t rake leaves into the street and then use them to build your soil.

Chemicals on the roadway could contaminate the leaves and your garden soil.

• Don’t use leaves from diseased trees or shrubs.

It is best to send those leaves to the county composting facility, which is hot enough to kill disease-causing agents.

• Be careful with some kinds of leaves.

Walnut, eucalyptus and camphor laurel leaves contain substances that inhibit plant growth. It’s best to compost these leaves before using them in your garden.

8. USE LEAVES IN ARTS AND CRAFTS PROJECTS

A seemingly endless number of websites will provide you and your children with instructions for projects that allow you to bring the brilliant autumn colors indoors.

Just enter “leaf arts and crafts” in your computer’s search engine to find the websites.

Projects include wall art, wreaths, window decorations and more.

Be aware: Unless preserved using specific chemicals, leaves will break down over time. So enjoy these pieces of art while you have them.

Don’t let your garden gold go to waste this year.

To create a seasonal collage, many of us have pressed autumn leaves between pieces of wax paper using a hot iron. With this “no iron” approach, all you need is clear contact paper, autumn leaves and scissors.

Here’s how you do it: • Gather autumn leaves.

Select a variety of sizes, shapes and colors for a most dazzling display. It is best if the leaves are still pliable (not too dry).

• Cut two pieces of contact paper to the desired size of your collage.

• Peel the backing off one piece and place it sticky side up on your work table.

If you peel only a small portion of the backing off and tape two of the corners down, it will keep the paper from sticking together as you remove the rest of the backing.

• Arrange the leaves on the contact paper.

It is best to spread them apart a bit, leaving some space in between. But let your artistic sense guide you.

• Take the backing off the second piece of contact paper and stick it (sticky side down) on top of your leaf arrangement.

The leaves will be “sandwiched” between the pieces of contact paper.

• Press firmly around each leaf (especially around the stem) so that the contact paper holds them in place.

Your leaf collage can be used as a wall hanging or placemat. When hung in a window, the back lighting creates the impression of a stained glass window.

This will help your family grow closer together and become more and more involved in each other’s lives. You might be surprised by what you will learn!

2. TRY NEW RECIPES

Comfort food can be a great thing, but so can the sense of adventure that comes from trying new dishes.

Let each family member make suggestions based around their favorite healthy foods, and then locate and try recipes that incorporate that food.

3. MAKE IT A TEAM EFFORT

Your family will feel more involved if they share the work.

Young children love helping out by cracking eggs, stirring, sprinkling spices or setting the table.

Allowing little ones to help out can also get them excited about the meal, even if they tend to be picky eaters. And as the old saying goes, many hands make light work.

Autumn on the Olympic Peninsula offers plenty of family-friendly carnivals, group trick-or-treat opportunities and other activities.

Here’s a sampling of fall events for area youngsters:

JEFFERSON COUNTY

A fall carnival will be held at Chimacum Elementary School, 91 West Valley Road, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26.

The family-friendly event will feature fun activities, prizes at a variety of booths, a cake walk, a bouncy house and arts and crafts activities.

Games cost 25 cents to 50 cents each.

Food will be available for purchase.

The Port Townsend Public Library, 1220 Lawrence St., will host a “Halloween Storytime Bash” at 10:15 a.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 30.

The special Halloween family storytime is free and open to the public.

Stories, songs, rhymes and spooktacular fun will be part of the event. Costumes are encouraged.

The bash is sponsored by Friends of the Port Townsend Public Library.

The Port Townsend Main Street Downtown Trick-or-Treat and Costume Parade will be held in downtown Port Townsend from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Water Street and some side streets from Madison to Polk will be closed to traffic from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for public safety at this event. Approximately 1,500 to 2,000 people attend this event.

Haunt Town, the Port Townsend Kiwanis Club’s annual haunted house, will be open Oct. 25, 26, 27 and 31 and is built in the basement of the Elks Lodge at 555 Otto St. in Port Townsend.

Hours are from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Cost is $10 per person.

The fundraiser benefits children’s projects and all the local high school ASB programs whose students attend.

While there is no minimum age limit, organizers suggest children younger than 10 might not be up to this type of entertainment.

CLALLAM COUNTY

The annual Sequim Merchants Trick-or-Treat will be held at a variety of Sequim businesses between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The free event, sponsored by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce and Sequim Merchants,

will feature area business owners handing out treats for children.

Streets will remain open to traffic, so care should be exercised when crossing streets.

Visitors to the The Pumpkin Patch, a 33-acre farm at the corner of U.S. Highway 101 and Kitchen-Dick Road, are encouraged to “Never Grow Up” this year.

Although no general admission is charged to the annual Pumpkin Patch, fees are charged for activities.

The farm is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. through Oct. 31 and features a “Peter Pan” theme this year in its corn maze designed by Amanda Lawton.

Entry to the maze costs $5 for all ages.

U-pick pumpkins vary in cost depending on the size, type and style of pumpkin.

The farm also offers a pumpkin shoot daily and wagon rides on weekends.

Snacks and drinks are available for purchase.

Theresa Lassila said she continues operating the Pumpkin Patch each year in memory of her father, Phil Lassila, who started the tradition in 1999.

A Halloween Bash will be held at the Carroll C. Kendall Unit Boys & Girls Club in Sequim, 400 W. Fir St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.

Arts and crafts activities, a haunted house, a costume contest and a jack-o’-lantern contest will occur.

People wishing to enter a carved pumpkin must drop off their masterpiece at the club between noon and 6 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 26, for contest judging.

Admission to the Halloween Bash costs $2 per person and includes 10 game tickets.

This fee does not include concessions. Pizza, pop and chips can be purchased for $3.

Additional game tickets can be purchased at the rate of $1 for 10 tickets.

The Port Angeles Downtown Association Trickor-Treat is set for 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The free event is open to costumed youngsters accompanied by parents and caregivers.

Stores bearing a “trick-or-treat” sign on doors or windows will offer treats.

The Forks Forum will sponsor the fourth annual Halloween Pet Costume Contest for dogs from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Forks Outfitters’ Pumpkin Patch outside the store, 950 S. Forks Ave. Participation entry is $5 or a bag of pet food. Photos cost $5. Event proceeds benefit Friends of Forks Animals.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place.

A Truck-or-Treat will be held at the Assembly of God Church, 81 Huckleberry Lane in Forks, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Children not only crave free time, they need it. And a new research study suggests they’re not getting enough.

Seventy-two percent of parents feel their children have less free and unstructured time when compared to their own childhoods.

“What people often don’t realize is play has a purpose,” said Dr. Robert Murray, a pediatrician, author and child health expert. “And parents aren’t always aware of its full benefits.”

WHY ARE KIDS GETTING SO LITTLE FREE TIME?

Part of the answer is parents’ good intentions.

Eighty-five percent of parents believe sports and activities lead to greater success in life, according to the survey.

In reality, “It’s the social and emotional interactions that are the important benefit, not the sport itself,” Murray said.

“The social and emotional skills that come from social interactions are an even greater predictor of later success than IQ.” Children need more time for quality, unstructured activities.
