A rich history surrounds the City of Black Diamond from the famous Black Diamond Bakery to the Black Diamond Historical Museum. The city is nestled in the foothills of Mount Rainier and the Cascades, within miles of the beautiful Green River Gorge and Flaming Geyser Park. We have hiking and biking trails throughout the city and the region, along with Lake Sawyer Regional Park and the Boat Launch Park.

We host Miner’s Day on the 2nd Saturday of July, our Labor Day three-day event, which also features a parade on Labor Day on highway 169, that closes the highway for approximately two hours and Hometown Christmas on the second Saturday in December. This will be our 8th year hosting “Tough Mudder”, a mud and obstacle two-day event on September 22 and 23. Our city gym now offers various activities such as Jazzercise, basketball, volleyball, baseball coaching and Karate, and is available to rent for birthday parties and special events.

Our Black Diamond Community Center offers social, recreational and emergency services for seniors, families and youth. This Center has been designated as the Red Cross Mass Disaster Center for the South King County area in case of a major emergency/disaster in the region.

Black Diamond History

The City of Black Diamond was incorporated in 1959, but was first established as a community in the late 1880s for the mining of coal. At the turn of the century the town was a major exporter of coal in the region. The Pacific Coast Coal Company in Black Diamond became the largest coal mining operation on the West Coast. Some historic buildings retain their original locations.

A rich history surrounds the City of Black Diamond from the famous Black Diamond Bakery to the Black Diamond Museum of History.

Black Diamond offers a warm and friendly rural, small town atmosphere with spectacular mountain views. The city is nestled in the foothills within miles of the beautiful Green River Gorge and Flaming Geyser Park.

The City is on the verge of growth. At 4,160 citizens, population projections may reach above 20,000 in the next 20 years. Over the past several years, major annexations have increased the population and acreage of Black Diamond. The annexation of the Lake Sawyer area in 1998 doubled the number of citizens. Recent annexations in the City’s urban growth area have increased the city’s size by approximately 1,600 acres.

Unlike other communities, the city has stood firm to its vision and growth strategies as identified with the community and captured in the Comprehensive Plan. As the final pieces fall into place, Black Diamond is in the position to allow growth to occur in a well-planned, environmentally sensitive manner that protects the rural character of our community.

Covington is situated in a great location, which is a major reason why we continue to grow and attract new residents. While we are just a short drive from everything the Puget Sound has to offer, from the water to the mountains, we also make a good home base for folks who commute to the area’s larger cities for work. When staying local, residents enjoy the ability to get everything they need right in Covington, from retail and grocery shopping to medical and hospital services.

Special events and recreation opportunities in Covington are just one of my favorite things about living here. We recently finished the phase 2 expansion of Covington Community Park at 17649 SE 240th St. Residents have been enjoying the park’s walking trails and soccer field for several years and now they can enjoy so many new amenities! The playground features climbing structures, swings, zip lines, and even a musical station. There is a new tennis court, three beautiful picnic shelters, restrooms, a concessions building, and a pavilion with an expansive lawn for performances. There is plenty of parking now, so don’t hesitate to stop by for a walk, some playtime with the kids, or reserve the picnic shelters to throw a party or BBQ! My favorite summer event in Covington is the annual Covington Days Festival in July! We also have a Summer Concert Series, Covington KidsFest, Sausage and Cider Fest, Outdoor Family Movie, Purple Light Nights, and the annual Community Tree Lighting as well as a wide range of activities and athletics programs run by the Parks and Recreation department. The Covington Aquatic Center is a regional treasure providing services like swimming lessons, lifeguard training, open and lap swims, party rentals,

In Covington, we encourage and value citizen input and we offer several meaningful opportunities for residents to help shape the decisions that impact our community. Our regular city council meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in city council chambers. SPOOKY SWIM

Lights out, a glowing pool, and ghoulish fun await you! The Spooky Swim is an annual event held around Halloween, where everyone gets to swim in the Pool with no lights on! We play tons of games, and who knows, maybe a ghost will show up!

Float-in to the Covington Aquatic Center for some holiday fun each Friday in December before Christmas! Bring the kids for some classical holiday films, games and activities, and a lot of splash!

All children 6 years of age, or less than 48” in height must be accompanied in the water and directly supervised by an adult (18 and over) at all times.

Friday Night Party Swims are a party at the Covington Aquatic Center! Join us from 7:00pm-9:00pm for our promotional Public Swims! Our prices are a steal!!

I am proud to call Maple Valley my home and to represent this great city as its mayor. The City of Maple Valley was incorporate in 1997 and celebrated its 20th anniversary in August 2017. The City of Maple Valley, founded on a rich regional history, continues to honor its past as it progresses forward towards its future. You may ask, “Why is Maple Valley such a great place to live, work, and visit?”

This year, we completed construction of the new beach house at the Lake Wilderness Swim Beach, created a new safe route for pedestrians and cyclists that improved access to neighborhoods and business centers, began design on multiple new public art installations, and started construction on the long anticipated Summit Park project.

In March 2018, the city invited the public to come and talk about how they can demonstrate their love for Maple Valley at the “For the Love of Maple Valley” community event. The city is currently in the process of facilitating the start of the citizen-initiated projects created at the event. We look forward to seeing the unique and creative ways our residents demonstrate their love for Maple Valley.

Maple Valley boasts many great events throughout the year. Maple Valley Days, the Independence Day Celebration, Music in the Park, Burgers & Blues, Shakespeare in the Park, and the Annual Kids’ Festival are all held during the summer months. The Maple Valley-Black Diamond Chamber of Commerce sponsors and organizes the annual “Hooked on Fishing” Opening Day Trout Derby, which takes place every April at Lake Wilderness Park. Hometown Holidays, in December, is a great way to celebrate our community and help promote local businesses. We are also the home to one of the 10 Best Farmers’ Markets in Washington State, which operates June through September.

We encourage our residents and visitors to utilize the variety of outdoor recreation amenities the city has to offer, which includes Lake Wilderness Park, the Green to Cedar River Trail, the Gaffney’s Grove Disc Golf Course, and the many top-rated mountain bike trails that we have in our area. Our Parks Department offers many activities and programs throughout the year for children, teens, and adults. Don’t forget the

We invite everyone to attend City Council meetings, which are held on the 2nd and 4th Monday’s of the month, along with the Town Hall and Open House meetings. There are many opportunities for volunteers to get involved including positions on City Commissions and with several of our departments. ARE YOU PREPARED? Being prepared can change everything. By planning ahead, you can increase the chances of survival for you and your family, not to mention gain peace of mind knowing you are in control.

Catastrophes can happen at any time. Preparing for three days will help you make it through many of the disasters you’ll face in the Puget Sound region, including major storms and even small earthquakes. However, to make it through a major catastrophe, like Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, you’ll need to be prepared for longer, at least 7 to 10 days.

Catastrophes can happen at any time and are likely to happen here.

Imagine you are at work, on the road, or at home during a catastrophe.

How would you communicate with loved ones? Are you prepared to survive without essential services, such as running water, electricity, or phones for 7 to 10 days?

BUILD A KIT FOR AT LEAST 7 TO 10 DAYS Imagine if resources aren’t available for seven or more days. You might have to take care of minor injuries and access to resources will likely be limited.

Help your family be better prepared by gathering additional supplies and customizing the list to meet your needs. Once you have the basics, think about items you could use to help yourself and others, or simply improve your comfort.

Identify a storage container or key location to place your survival kit, then gather and store supplies. Supplies include water and food as well as items for shelter and warmth, first aid, communication, personal hygiene and sanitation. It’s possible your home could be damaged and you may have to evacuate; be sure to include a backpack or similar bag so you can pack some of these items to go. Many of these supplies you may already have at home.

Below are suggested basic supplies to survive for 7 to 10 days.

■ Water – one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation ■ Food – at least 7 to 10 day supply of non-perishable food per person ■ Cash – ATMs won’t work without electricity ■ Battery-powered radio and extra batteries ■ Flashlight and extra batteries ■ First aid kit ■ Whistle to signal for help ■ Filter mask or cotton t-shirt to help filter the air ■ Moist towelettes for sanitation ■ Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities if needed ■ Manual can opener for food ■ Shelter items like tents, tarps and rope ■ Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation ■ Unique family needs: supplies for infants, pets and elderly, prescriptions, and important family documents For other resources visit: www.makeitthrough.org
