Expert advice for winterizing your home

Fall is approaching, and it is now time to start thinking about preparing for winter.

You’re getting ready to pull out your sweaters and look for your hats and mittens at the bottom of the coat closet.

But what about your house — is it prepared for the cold months ahead?

You’ll be a lot less comfortable in the coming months if you haven’t prepared your home for Old Man Winter.

As temperatures begin to dip, your home will require maintenance to keep it in tip-top shape.

While it’s still a little warm and somewhat dry this is really the best time to start.

Below are six tips to help you prepare your home for winter and eliminate energy waste.

Always remember that you can contact your local PUD if you have any questions.

Contact information can be found at the end of this article.

1. GET YOUR DUCTS IN A ROW

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a home with central heating can lose up to 60 percent of its heated air before that air reaches the vents if ductwork is not well connected and insulated, or if it must travel through unheated spaces.

Making sure exterior windows are well sealed before winter takes hold is an easy to way to save on heating bills.

That’s a huge amount of wasted money, not to mention an uncomfortable house.

2. INSULATE YOUR HOUSE

You need warm clothes to stay warm in the winter and so does your house. The only difference is that the warm clothes for your house is called insulation, and it is the most effective way to stay warm and eliminate energy waste.

If you go into the attic and you can see the ceiling joists you know you don’t have enough insulation, because a ceiling joist is at most 10 or 11 inches high and you should have more insulation than that.

The same goes for your floor insulation.

There should be thick insulating batts in between your floor joists and with a digital camera, it’s easy to check your floor insulation levels.

Just make sure the flash is on, and reach your arm down and take a picture of the underfloor.

Now is the time to take down the window screens and, if you have them, put up storm windows, which provide an extra layer of protection and warmth for the home.

Storm windows are particularly helpful if you have old, single-pane glass windows.

But if you don’t have storm windows and your windows are leaky or drafty, they should to be updated to a more efficient window.

If you don’t have money to upgrade your windows now, there are some other things you can do that are low cost and fairly easy: • Inspect exterior for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes. Seal them.

• Use weatherstripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home, and caulk windows.

• Switch out summer screens with glass replacements from storage. If you have storm windows, install them.

• Install a window insulator kit.

Basically, the kit is plastic sheeting that’s affixed to a window’s interior with double-stick tape.

A hair dryer is then used to shrinkwrap the sheeting onto the window. (It needs to be removed in the spring.)

It’s temporary and it’s not pretty, but it’s inexpensive and effective.

4. WRAP THOSE PIPES

A burst pipe caused by a winter freeze is a nightmare. Prevent it before low temperatures settle in.

Make certain the water to your hose bibs is shut off inside your house (via a turnoff valve) and the lines are drained.

Also, you should install Styrofoam cups with a screw attachment to help insulate spigots.

Next, go looking for other pipes that aren’t insulated or that pass through unheated spaces — pipes that run through crawlspaces, basements or garages.

Wrap them with pre-molded foam rubber sleeves or fiberglass insulation, available at hardware stores.

5. REVERSE THAT FAN

Reversing your ceiling fan is a small tip that people don’t often think of.

By reversing the fan’s direction from the summer operation and slowing it down, the fan will draw air up, helping to mix up the air in your home so it doesn’t stratify with warmer air by the ceiling and cold air by your feet.

You can know if the fan is ready for winter by looking at it while it is spinning; if the blades are turning clockwise, then it’s setup for winter.

6. FINALLY, CHECK THOSE ALARMS

This is a great time to check the operation and change the batteries on your home’s smoke detectors. If not now, always change the battery when we switch daylight savings time.

Detectors should be replaced every 10 years, fire officials say. Also, invest in a carbon-monoxide detector. Every home with some kind of combustion appliance should have at least one, located in the room with the combustion appliance.

Once you’ve completed these energysaving measures, you can use the SmartHub app on your mobile device to track your energy usage from month to month and compare it to the same time last year.

Getting your house in order can be a struggle, especially as we age.

Sorting through decades of belongings is often emotional and stressful, as questions and decisions pile up: Is this jewelry valuable? What should I do with all these tools I no longer use? Will this china set have sentimental value to my children?

But while it can be exhausting, this effort to declutter and simplify can be worthwhile, not only for our homes but also for our health.

DECLUTTERING IS REALLY GOOD FOR YOU

Getting rid of things you no longer need or want may have a positive effect on mental health and also can make for a safer environment.

It’s a sobering fact that every 12 seconds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, someone over age 64 will fall and end up in the emergency room.

Decluttering can help keep paths clear and obstacles to a minimum.

A recent Indiana University study showed that people with clean houses are healthier than people with messy houses.

Regular household chores like vacuuming and washing windows can be great physical activity.

A tidy home also can mean we’re more likely to invite people over — prompting interactions that can help alleviate feelings of depression and isolation that can accompany aging.

NPBA BUILDING, REMODELING AND ENERGY EXPO IN SEQUIM

The North Peninsula Building Association’s Building, Remodeling and Energy Expo will be held at Sequim High School, 601 N. Sequim Ave., on Saturday, Feb. 16, and Sunday, Feb. 17.

As the largest building show on the Peninsula, the expo is one the best ways for building professionals to connect and share their expertise with large numbers of potential clients.

The free expo will offer many exhibitor booths, demonstrations and giveaways in both school gyms and the cafeteria from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Most booths will be set up in the north and south gyms. Demonstrations will take place in the cafeteria.

Clallam County Master Gardeners will present a speaker’s series to provide education and inspiration for gardeners of all levels.

Music, food and a garden wagon raffle will round out the events of this garden gala.

Admission costs $5 per person. Children 12 and younger receive free admission.

The gala is presented by Soroptimist International of Sequim, which is celebrating more than 70 years of service to the community.

The Soroptimist Gala Garden Show has its roots in fundraising for community scholarships, the Live Your Dream Award, a medical loan closet, First Teacher, Sequim Community Aid, Rose House, the Food Bank and the Boys & Girls Club — to name a few.

CLALLAM COUNTY HOME AND LIFESTYLE SHOW IN PORT ANGELES

The free Clallam County Home and Lifestyle Show will be held in the Port Angeles High School gymnasium, 304 E. Park Ave., from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17.

Previous shows have featured more than 150 booths highlighting an array of services and products available from area businesses.

Now in its 37th year, the Clallam County Home and Lifestyle Show is the largest two-day marketing event on the North Olympic Peninsula.

An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 people from across the

region attend the show annually.

The home improvement event is a bazaar of contractors and suppliers, service providers and recreational opportunities.

Until 2015, the gathering was known as the KONP Home Show. Sponsored by KONP 1450 AM and 101.7 FM and Clallam County Public Utility District, the Home and Lifestyle Show is a showplace for businesses on the Peninsula and elsewhere to display their services and for prospective customers to gather information for spring and summer plans.

The show is a perfect opportunity to market a business, educate the community about services offered or speak face-to-face with potential clients, according to show organizers.

Exhibitors are available to help show attendees achieve “quality of life” in their home and lifestyle.

Parking will be available in the student parking lots on the 200 and 300 blocks of East Park Avenue.

A free shuttle will take visitors from parking areas to the gym.

Visitors to the show will receive a free reusable shopping bag for as long as supplies last.

Home improvement businesses will be on hand to offer information on gutters, bathroom fixtures, blinds, windows, roofing, lawn care equipment, landscaping, heating and cooling systems and more.

Lifestyle businesses, such as fitness centers, home health and beauty products, also will be represented.

The show attracts new businesses each year along with dozens of returning exhibitors, so the show offers something new to attendees each year.

The 2019 Clallam County Home and Lifestyle Show will be held Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17, in Port Angeles High School’s gymnasium.

Making the most of your interior spaces

CHOOSING THE RIGHT WALL COLOR Wall colors can really help make the most of your natural light.

Choosing muted tones or soft colors on your window walls will bring the light in and extend the brightness and make your space feel better.

A dark window wall in the fall and winter has very little light with curtains drawn shut or dark skies outside.

Accent walls with richer, deeper tones will help give you the color and spice that keeps the space from being boring.

The key is to use a small wall or otherwise dark wall for accent so that you do not distract from the natural light or darken the room even in good light.

If you are trying a bold wall color for the first time, start small and grow as you see how the color effects the space.

Dark wooden furniture or dark fabrics also confine a space.

Adding the right color accents with throws or pillows adds comfort and softness to almost any room.

Seasonal decorations and colors to match for Thanksgiving and Christmas are easy ways to make the long winter feel a little shorter.

When you are ready to brighten up the inside space with a fresh new color, bring your fabric samples and stain colors with you to the store to look at color swatches. If that is not practical, bring several samples cards home and look at them in the morning, afternoon and night to see how your specific environment changes the color. Your interior lighting choices will influence the look and feeling you get from the colors you choose.

Classic barn door brings charm to this new build

An empty nest led a Sequim couple to sell their family home and really think about what they wanted and needed in a house tailored for just two people.

“This couple lived in their home for 25 years, raised their family and never made any major upgrades,” said Trisa Katsikapes of Trisa & Co. Interior Design.

“Their home was nice for their lifestyle then, but with the kids gone the couple wanted the ease of living closer to town. When an opportunity to sell their home happened, they sold and made the decision to build a new home closer to town.”

The couple wishes to remain unnamed to retain their privacy.

Professionals including Ken Hayes Architecture, Trisa & Co. Interior Design and Shawn Gallacci of Childers & Bukovnic were recruited to assist the couple in the decision to create their dream home.

“The collaboration between all parties created not only their dream home, but wonderful lasting relationships,” Katsikapes said.

An open kitchen where family and friends could comfortably gather was high on the homeowners’ wish list.

A barn door was a logical choice for the pantry area, and the homeowners are thrilled with the results.

When Randy and Laurie Brown purchased a house in Sequim’s Bell Hill area, they knew a few remodeling projects would be required to make it their dream home.

The meticulously maintained Craftsman style-home had great bones, but the house had not been remodeled since it was built in 1991.

A feature that attracted the Browns to the home — a kitchen with an adjacent working fireplace — needed a cosmetic update.

During a previous kitchen remodel, the Browns were willing to stretch their design wings. But with this remodel, the couple felt it was important to complement the integrity of the Craftsman elements of the home.

The couple tapped Tina Lemcke, owner of Fresh Aire Designs and Fieldnotes in downtown Sequim, to guide them through the design and remodeling process.

The Browns originally thought a fun-colored, retro-style Smeg refrigerator

would add a quirky pop of color. They wanted to add some life to the dark and very dated kitchen.

But Lemcke’s suggestion of a purchasing a glass-door stainless steel refrigerator took the inspiration for the room in a fresh new direction.

Soon other appliances were selected, and decisions about paint and tile color and flooring options were made. >> KITCHEN continued on Page 13

Lemcke is the owner and designer of Fresh Aire Designs within Fieldnotes. The downtown Sequim shop recently celebrated its fifth anniversary.

Before Fieldnotes, she was co-owner and founder of Fiddleheads in downtown Port Angeles for nine years.

“It is within the retail marketplace that I’ve been able to hone my skills and help people realize their dreams,” she said. “It is an honor, whether it’s in the shop picking their brains and offering solutions or in the privacy of their homes. I find this work both challenging and rewarding.”

HOW MUCH CAN I AFFORD?

A home affordability calculator can help you get an idea of what you might be able to afford and keep your monthly payments within your budget.

In addition to recurring expenses, such as car payments, student loans, credit cards and disposable income, be sure to consider other monthly expenses related to the new home, including association fees, homeowners’ insurance, utilities and property taxes.

Further, some types of mortgages have firm eligibility cutoffs related to the ratio between a buyer’s total debt amounts and their monthly income.

HOW MUCH DO I NEED FOR A DOWN PAYMENT?

It’s a common misconception that a 20 percent down payment is required to buy a home.

Let’s face it. A 20 percent down payment is a lot of money, and often the largest obstacle for homeownership, especially for first-time buyers.

You can qualify for a conventional mortgage with as little as 3 percent down.

Conventional mortgages originated with a low down payment, which is defined as less than 20 percent, require private mortgage insurance (MI) until approximately 20 percent equity is established through either monthly payments or home price appreciation.

When mortgage insurance cancels, your monthly mortgage bill is reduced.

It is important to know that not all forms of MI are created equal. Private mortgage insurance is temporary and cancelable but the overwhelming majority of mortgages backed by the government’s Federal Housing Administration (FHA) contain insurance that cannot be canceled.

WHAT IS THE INTEREST RATE AND IS IT A FIXED RATE?

Most first-time homebuyers go with a 30-year fixedrate mortgage, which locks you into an interest rate with steady, predictable payments.

Different lenders might offer different rates, so make sure to contact several lenders to ensure you’re getting the best option available in the market.

A rate lock protects you from rising interest rates while the loan is being processed and lasts for a specific amount of time. In addition, make sure you know whether the rate is fixed or “adjustable.”

Adjustable rate mortgages, commonly referred to as “ARMs,” result in periodic adjustments in the interest rate based on the lender’s cost of credit and can be detrimental to homeowners in rising interest rate environments.

Finally, ask if you are paying for “points” to reduce the interest rate. It’s an added upfront cost paid at closing, but it results in a lower rate for the life of the loan.

DOES MY CREDIT SCORE MATTER?

Yes, generally stronger credit scores (FICO 720 and above) come with better interest rates, but there are

mortgage options for those with imperfect scores.

When you apply for a mortgage, your credit record is used to help determine your approval and mortgage terms, but it is not the only thing lenders consider.

A lender also will look at your debt-to-income (DTI) ratio, cash reserves and other factors to help gauge your overall creditworthiness.

SHOULD I GET PRE-APPROVED FOR A MORTGAGE?

The short answer is always yes.

Pre-approval means you receive a conditional commitment from a lender up to a specific loan amount.

In a seller’s market with tight housing supply, being pre-approved demonstrates that you are a serious buyer with access to mortgage financing.

To become pre-approved, you’ll provide your lender with information on your income, assets, debts and credit history to analyze your financial profile and determine your creditworthiness and amount you can borrow to purchase a home.

Fire safety tips for heating your home in the fall

As the leaves begin to change color, the autumn weather brings its cooler temperatures. People start using their heating sources that have sat dormant for the past few months.

A substantial number of structure fires occur in January in February, often caused by heating fires.

Here are some important fire safety tips to remember as you heat your house this fall and winter.

CHIMNEYS, STOVES & FIREPLACES

According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment fires account for about 15 percent of all reported home fires (second behind cooking).

The leading cause of these home heating fires was failure to clean chimneys.

“Make sure your chimney is clean before you start the burn season,” said Mike DeRousie, assistant chief with Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue and owner of the Spa Shop and Pellet Heat Company in Port Angeles.

Chimney fires are primarily caused by the creosote that has built up in your chimney catching on fire.

Chimneys should be cleaned annually.

Creosote sweeping logs can help to reduce early creosote buildup, but only to some extent. They are not a replacement for chimney cleaning.

A common mistake people make is not properly disposing of ash.

“When you clean out the ash, put it in a metal bucket away from the house,” DeRousie said.

“Some people put it in a plastic bin or place the bucket on the porch and it catches on fire.”

wood siding and dry grass or brush.

Also make sure the fire is cool before you clean out the ash.

DeRousie noted that people should only burn seasoned firewood.

“Green wood will cause more creosote buildup in your chimney,” he said.

Don’t overload your fireplace with wood. A large fire generates more smoke, which also can create more creosote.

If you have a wood stove, it should have adequate clearance from combustible surfaces.

When the fire is out, do not close your damper with hot ash in the fireplace. This can cause the fire to heat up again, potentially sending carbon monoxide into the house.

As with any type of fire, never leave a fire unattended and always keep children and pets at a safe distance from the fire.

Carbon monoxide — or CO — can build up through the use of wood stoves and generators. Without proper ventilation, CO can build up indoors.

Your body begins to replace the oxygen in your red blood cells with carbon monoxide, resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning causes headache, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, weakness and confusion. It can eventually cause loss of consciousness and even death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning each year.

OUTSIDE THE HOME

Are you getting firewood ready to heat your home this winter?

Don’t store firewood next to your house. While you might enjoy the convenience of not having to walk very far to get a new piece of firewood, that wood pile could be disastrous during a fire. Wood piles should be located at least 30 feet from the home.

As trees lose their leaves and the debris gathers in your gutters and on your roof, be sure to keep them clean and clear. Gutters filled with leaves and twigs can back up, feeding more fuel to a fire.

Improper generator use might cause carbon monoxide poisoning, electrocution or even fire.

Never use a portable generator in a garage, carport, basement, crawl space or other enclosed or partiallyenclosed area, even with ventilation. This can cause a building up carbon monoxide.

Place the generator away from windows, doors and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors.

Allow your generator to cool down before refueling or storing.

Don’t overload your generator. If you draw more power than it can produce, you might blow a fuse and damage equipment.

ARE THERE ALTERNATIVES TO OVERWINTERING GARDEN ANNUALS IN THE HOUSE?

Some gardeners try to avoid this chilling end by moving their favorite “annuals” indoors before the first frost.

Overwintering plants indoors helps stretch a tight gardening budget; plants successfully overwintered don’t have to be bought again the following spring.

Overwintering also can ensure access to particular plant varieties. Cultivars come and go as nurseries develop (and market) newer and better varieties each season; there’s no guarantee that a favorite cultivar will be available next season unless you save it yourself.

Probably the best reason to overwinter outdoor plants is that they will give you something to care for during the cold, dreary days of winter; tending these plants can help satisfy that gardening urge and tide you over until the growing season begins again.

But the indoor overwintering process is not always successful; the plants often struggle and ultimately die.

And it does take effort on your part.

There are other ways to save annuals over the winter.

(See story “Are there alternatives to overwintering garden annuals in the house” on this page).

If you decide that bringing garden annuals into your living space is the best way to go, consider these tips for increased chances of success.

Be choosy about the plants you bring in. Plants already in pots are much easier to save. You don’t have go to the trouble of digging them up; furthermore, they will not sustain the considerable root damage (and shock) that occurs during digging. >> GARDEN ANNUALS continued on Page 22

Let your tuberous begonia go dormant over winter. Stop watering it in the fall and let it die back. Before the first frost, remove the tuber from the soil and store it in a warm, dry place. Replant it in spring after the danger of frost has past.

Overwintered plants are rarely as beautiful indoors as they were outdoors. At best, they fail to flower, and often get spindly as they reach for the light, turn pale and drop leaves.

Is this something you want to look at all winter?

If not, there are alternatives to bringing favorite annuals indoors.

First, check the hardiness rating of the plant to see if it might survive outdoors.

For a plant to survive in a pot outside, it should be two zones hardier than the climate zone in which you live because the soil in the pot will freeze more quickly than in the ground.

For instance, if you live in USDA Zone 8, then the plant has to be hardy to USDA Zone 6 to survive sitting in a pot outside.

If a potted plant is sufficiently hardy for your climate but not hardy enough to remain on the deck or patio, another option is to move the plant to a protected outdoor location and sink the pot into the soil.

Soil is a great insulator and will protect the plant’s roots. A 3-inch layer of organic mulch on top of the soil will provide further protection for the roots.

Plants that do well in moderate light intensity also are good choices because they will adapt to indoor conditions more easily than plants that need full sun.

Garden plants often recommended for overwintering include fibrous begonias, bougainvillea, coleus, fuchsia, geraniums, impatiens, ornamental sweet potato and selected herbs (including parsley, rosemary, lavender, chives and thyme).

Save only the healthiest plants. Never overwinter plants that have pests or diseases because they are more likely to languish and die. Worse yet, their problems could spread to other plants in your home.

Check plants carefully before bringing them in. Some pests such as aphids and spider mites are difficult to see.

Look for the following signs of diseases and pests: • Curly, misshapen leaves • Shiny, sticky leaves (“honeydew,” which is excreted by aphids) • Discolorations or spots on leaves that are not usual for that variety • Leaves that look water-soaked • Poor growth You can mess with trying to rid a plant of these problems, but the best advice is to toss it out.

Acclimate your outdoor plants to indoor conditions gradually. Before bringing plants permanently inside, move them to a shady spot in your garden, such as under an awning or tree for an increasing number of hours each day. Continue this process for about a week to 10 days.

Cuttings should be about 3 to 4 inches long and include the tip of the stem and two or three sets of leaves. Remove the bottom set of leaves (new roots will often develop from this area) and stick the stem into a container of good-draining potting soil.

Keep the soil slightly moist and place the cuttings in bright, but indirect light. Once the cuttings form roots, they can be placed in direct sunlight for good growth.

Cuttings will need to be repotted before being moved outdoors and slowly exposed to outdoor conditions. But in no time, they will be as big (and beautiful) as the original plant.

Locate the plant in the sunniest spot in your house.

The ideal placement will be in a south-facing window followed by an east-facing window. If you are motivated, supplemental lighting will help.

Water and fertilize judiciously. Plants will grow more slowly indoors than they did in strong outdoor light, and the pots will not dry out as quickly; therefore, the plants will not need as much water or fertilizer as they did on your deck or patio.

Water only when the soil is dry to the touch. Fertilize when the plants show signs of growth, usually when the days start getting longer.

As the weather warms, it is time to think about moving overwintered plants outdoors again. Just as you did when you moved them indoors, expose the plants to the new conditions gradually. Move them first to a protected outdoor spot for a few hours each day. Slowly increase the sun exposure and time outside. Once the threat of frost has passed, place the plants outside permanently.

Be aware that no matter how careful you are, most outdoor plants that are moved indoors will not thrive or flower as they did outside.

But by following these steps, your favorite annuals are more likely to survive the winter and bring joy to you, the gardener, for another season.
